I had a really sick thought... Cue up APSoG on part V (track 5).
Now advance and pause at 4 minutes. Now play that part and imagine
Elmer Fudd on vocals.

"Chuck Schuldiner's Control Denied

Chuck Schuldiner's CONTROL DENIED has wrapped up the recording process with new and improved bass tracks courtesy of Steve DiGiorgio. The lineup is completed by Death's Richard Christy and Shannon Hamm as well as newcomer Tim Aymar on vocals with production duties ala Jim Morris. The debut full length, The Fragile Art of Existence, should the light of day in October through Nuclear Blast."

I heard that this Tim Aymar guy has Bruce Dickinson type-of-vocals... this is going to rock big time! "The Sound Of Perseverance" was a masterpiece! .. errr, remember Steve DiGiorgio? *evil grin* :-)))) Richard Christy? Shannon Hamm? Maybe Hamm is related to Stuart Hamm... j/k :-)))

"Yngwie J. Malmsteen

It is confirmed that Mark Boals will be singing on the new YNGWIE MALMSTEEN album. Producer Chris Tsangarides is presently in Miami finishing up some of the material right now. According to sources close to the project, Yngiwe is getting back to a Rising Force/Marching Out style!!"

"QUEENSRYCHE's ninth album, Q2K, will be out on September 14th. The album was produced by Kelly Gray, who has been officially added as the band's new guitarist, replacing Chris DeGarmo. A tour is planned for early to mid-October."

Many ask for a bad pink floyd song but these things do exist. The most striking example being the song "Seamus" on Meddle. You have this great collection of really deep and well constructed songs only to then be transported into the backwoods with some wailing dog as the song's primary theme. Really...have some respect and don't destroy the integrety of the albumn. I always have to skip that song....dogs of war really isn't that great and "coperal kleg" (sp?) on saucerful is questionable but still good. Other than that you can't really fault them for they didn't seem to rush the production of these songs.

I think I have to agree with Nick on this one. While I wouldn't say I "hate" Pink Floyd (I do like a few of their songs), as a whole I find their stuff monotonous/boring. Like several other bands whose virtues are extolled on this list and others, I guess I just don't "get it".

Good idea, but I would substitute with Guillory, Hellborg, Castronovo, and Thordendahl. Tell them each (separately) that they are completely in charge and to write 50 minutes of music (each). Then shut them into a 110 degree C sauna until they decided on how to prune the 200 minutes into about 55. "Sweaty Sauna Expedient".

Metrically, it's more or less pretty direct, yes. But not boring!

[Fibraio on synth sounds, following what looks like a long thread] > I have played with the k2500 and it just leaves me flat.

Good instrument. But it left me cold.

I only last year (three years of admittedly pretty lax research) managed to evolve a somewhat acceptable live lead sound out of my old Roland 1080. These digital boxes are a pain in the ass...

[ShadowBor@aol.com] > is not just because they want more sounds and > don't know how to program them (necesarily), it's because of the sound > changing thing. That really is the Trinity's biggest weakness (IMO).

1080's (and presumably 2080's?) do this as well in performance mode. A slight improvement is to make sure the two patches have the same effect structure. But the notes are still cut..

> Besides, if you were endorsing Korg or someone and were offered extra > keyboards for free or whatever, wouldn't you take them?

That's the problem with having endorsements. Life is actually simpler when you just buy what you like and what works for you.

OK, then, On 22:17 1999/06/15 -0700, someone wrote something about something or other not being "progressive". Probably another ten month thread!! :) I have useful but tedious work to do and typing keeps me from it for a while, so here goes.

I have no idea what "progressive" means, but music probably should "progress" from tertial harmony, the twelve-tone equal tempered scale, and 4/4 to be called truly progressive.

A case in point. I just spent a few days on the bus listening to Meshuggah's album "Chaosphere" and I was pretty much _completely_ fucking blown away by this CD. I'd recommend this to anyone that feels overdue for a mind-blowing aural enema that hopefully will clean out any unneccesary debris -- perhaps a few brain cells desiccated and atrophied by the piddling rehash of old ideas, and mechanistic posing, that passes for "prog" these days.

This is music built on a simple idea as a solid conceptual foundation and consistently and forcefully implemented, without _any_ compromises whatsoever, by people that probably could give a flying fuck about becoming rock stars; doing away with unneccesary little details like harmony and melody in the process. Extremely refreshing!! But the other good thing about it is that I suspect it works on many levels (some of which I perhaps can't hear, or hear yet) -- it is extremely aggressive-sounding metal music, for a start. My friends in Stratovarius probably wondered if I had a blow to my head, or too much Koskenkorva, or something, but our German crew guys, straight-edge teetotalers with fearsome tattoos, gave me appreciative nods. On that level it sounds like Pantera on angel dust. I mean, SCARY sounding -- projecting into me that proud and scared feeling of what a terrible and awesome animal Homo Sapiens is, with devious neutron bombs, complex political organization, space shuttles, what not.

Then again it's also very crisply executed, and there are enough complex mathematical rhytmical structures hidden that I found new things even after four or five listens. It's an integer-math shred-fest (but not in the widdly-widdly sense, the solos are very unique-sounding -- like Holdsworth meets, maybe, a very musical Robert Fripp). Not "listen to what my fingers can play", rather, "listen to what my mind can think up."

Meshuggah, they're from the far North of Sweden by the way. PROGRESSIVE! RECOMMENDED!

This morning, Howard had on Martin Scorcesi's (sp?) nephew Chris, who was plugging his band, Alchemy X. As Chris is describing the band, he mentions that it's in the vein of bands like DREAM THEATER... "progressive rock" (though it was more metal to my ears, hey, it's only labels). But he DID mention our boys, so that's a big plus.

Then Howard plays a minute or two of one of their songs, and honestly, it sounded really good. Anyone know anything about Alchemy X? The album, apparently, is called "A Delicate Balance."

A few listeners called in to respond. Three of them really loved it, and three didn't. Of the ones that didn't, one compared it scornfully to Winger (which was off-base)... another, though, compared it scornfully to Queensryche. A better comparison, but it was nice to see Chris Scorcesi get pissed about this guy disparaging QR.

Well, hey, here's to spreading the word, if only just a bit....

DEATH/ CONTROL DENIED'S CHUCK SCHULDINER SPEAKS OUT

Greetings to all press and metal people of the world. Usually I wait until the launch of a new record to initiate media contact but for several reasons I'm contacting the world to properly inform everyone as to what is going on with the now completed CONTROL DENIED debut release, "The Fragile Art Of Existence".

The album turned out crushing and I promise will be worth the wait and anticipation that has surrounded the birth of this extension of my musical career. Alongside Jim Morris (producer of Death's two previous releases) who has engineered and produced this album , I was thrilled to be joined once again by Richard Christy(drums) and Shannon Hamm (guitar) who both appeared on "The Sound of Perseverance", one of my best friends and favorite bass players, Steve DiGiorgio as well as the killer addition of Tim Aymar of Primal Scream (vocals)!! We are all very excited about what we have accomplished with this record which contains the same attitude and sincerity that people have come to expect from my passion for trend-free metal!

Typically after recording a new record we all go out and celebrate. This time things were different. Toward the end of our time in the studio, I started experiencing some pain in my upper neck which I initially thought was a pinched nerve or strained muscle. Having completed the recording I consulted with a chiropractor followed by a massage therapist and acupuncturist who recommended I go for an MRI which is a special type of x-ray used to get a detailed picture of the nerve and brain tissue. Well, I was right about the pinched nerve but unfortunately it was being caused by a brain stem tumor.

At the time of this press release, I am in my fourth week of radiation therapy with some of the most sought-after physicians in the field. I am also blessed with the immense love and support from my family and friends

which is such a big part of getting through something like this.

To try to put this into simple terms is obviously difficult but let me say this: it is a mind, body and soul expanding experience. The treatment has

been going well and with this type of aggressive radiation the prognosis is very good. Patience is something I have learned to embrace in my fourteen

years of living music and now it is time to further master the art of patience on my road to recovery.

I've always felt a personal connection between the music and the fans/friends who support it. It is that support, that goes beyond the music itself, which I appreciate with all my heart and soul.

Let the metal flow... Sincerely,

Chuck Schuldiner

The part where I think portnoy sounds like zonder is that very progressive riff that jordan refers to as having written it with DT in mind. It starts at 0:46 and ends around 1:02. It is then repeated around the end of the song (didn't check the time for that part). And, like somebody else also commented, it does sound like something off of APSOG, I think it's part 3 or 4 (the first very progressive one). _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I guess people with Scorsese blood in them just kick ass ;) Even if Marty did direct Michael Jackson's "Bad" mini-movie. Anyway, I'm surprised that one of the Scorseses is playing music, but I'm not surprised he's doing it in a non-pop medium.
