Alright, kudos to whomever it was that posted info about Opeth. I picked up
"My Arms, Your Hearse" with the buy.com $10 off gift certificate, and it
fucking rocks! I was not expecting all the variation - the clean parts,
some actual singing, entire acoustic songs, mixed with the expected kick-ass
black-metal-style stuff. Very, very cool stuff. This one may not leave the
changer for a while! How does this one compare to the previous two?

    Thanks for the info again!

I think it's not so much a case of being brainwashed or easily
influenced by what is popular and perhaps therefore good, it's more a
case of what is available versus what isn't. You just don't hear metal
on the radio here in LA. What you do here is lots of hip hop, rap,
dancey techno stuff, country, latin music on a few stations, and a to a
lesser extent, there is adult contemporary, a few college stations that
like to play eclectic and idie.. you catch my drift. For you LA people,
I pretty much grew up listening to KIIS and Power 106, not because I was
brainwashed and certainly not because I had MTV (I never had cable til
this year) but because old skool rap was widely available, as were acts
like George Michael and Madonna, whom I loved when I was younger.
People look at me like I'm a monster when they find out I don't know
what Iron Maiden, Judas Priest or AC/DC sound like. Sure Ive heard them
while riding along in friends' cars, but its not the same thing. We
just do not have a radio station that plays metal, old or new. If I
happen to catch Tool on the radio, it's a rare occurence. The "hard
rock" stations have become like Columbia House.. you open a catalog and
look under hard rock and what do you see but Neil Young and Lynard
    Skynard.

Well i thinks its more of a death metal with black vocals, but youre right
it does kick a whole lot of ass, very tight musicianship, great variations,
great acoustic passages etc. IMO, you will like Morningrise and Orchid the
same...although both are a bit more "drawn out" in the sense that the songs are
longer, with much more instrumental and acoustic passages, and less vocals
(clean or growled) I would suggest to get morningrise next, and then
orchid...(which i think is the most drawn out of all three) In anycase, if you
enjoyed "my arms.." you cant go wrong with any of the other cds. This is truly a
band with great music that lots of people are dismissing because of the growled
(i hate the term cookie monster) vocals.

Actually, Josh is right, but he forgot the chilling detail:
98% of the badgered experimentees continued even after the "victim"

95% continued until the victim "died". That's fucked up right there.

I believe it was Dave Thomas who wrote
<<This is the sort of radio I grew up listening to (yes, I'm one old useless
bastard). Rock could be followed by jazz which could be followed by a comedy
record back to rock or whatever. The amazing thing was that for the most
part, the musical choices usually fit together. Playing a whole album side
was not an uncommon occurrence. When's the last time you heard something
more than five minutes long on a regular rock station>>

My post is mainly about playing whole album sides.
While I have definitely (and that by the way is the correct way of spelling
definitely) been weaning from listening to the radio, about a year ago, the
local radio station here (94.1, WJJO, Rockford or somewhere close to Madison,
Wisconsin) used to play whole albums to close out the night at around 11 PM.
I remember hearing New Millennium for the first time this way, and how at
first I was like HUH?? Took me a few minutes, but after the vocals came in,
I knew it was Dream Theater. Despite a desperate(<--almost) attempt to stay
up, I didn't even make it through that song (I'm NOT ragging on FII by the
way). Anyway, I don't know if they still do that, but i was just very
reminded of this when I read the original post

Also, if you like the band, you might like to know that they
are releasing a new album (which is completely recorded
now). The title of the album as well as the songs are not yet
decided. How do I know that? I manage their mailing list (if
you want to subscribe, just send an e-mail to the following

            the instructions you'll receive).

Also, a recommended site about the band is members.xoom.com/opeth

            Hope this helps, Roger...

Thank you very much for repeating my words here on the Ytsejam. As an amendment to my previous post, I intended it to be a comment (or should I say a critic) upon people who only listen to music "for their friends" and not for themselves. I know many people who actually listen to some kind of music (and this *DOES* include progressive rock/progressive metal and the subgenres) just to seem "cool" to their friends, which is a sad lack of real personality.

The comment about the Internet is that people will actually save bandwidth and the e-mail relays will have less traffic. It certainly won't make any difference to the speed of the Internet, since the amount of information is negligible, but it was supposed to be a sarcastic remark.

I'm a little late with this, but what the hey?

    >or not your head has been in the sand for a number of years, good music >doesn't get a fair chance. I don't care whether you think MTV is >playing good music, but to say that MTV isn't biased and people are

This is true. But the comment that people are sheep and only buy what they are handed is complete BS. Remember my bread example a long time ago? Jeez, I'm too lazy to come up with new analogies so here goes:

A customer goes into the supermarket and picks up a pack of WonderBread. Mmm. Most popular kind of bread bought in any American household. Whilst this whole time the poor local bakery is suffering for business. Most of the local markets won't carry their bread for fear it won't sell as well as the much coveted WonderBread. I mean, why should Mr. Albertson purchase or even sponsor the local bakery over his star product, not to mention he's got his own bakeries cranking out bread, rolls, and pasties, hmmm? Same goes with the music industry. If it ain't broke, it don't need fixin'. Music companies are in it for the money; they don't like to take risks. A risk might mean missing a Billboard hit for a week or their quarterly gross earnings not going up their anticipated 1.7% over the last quarter. I hate to say it, but as long as we live in a capitalist society, I'm afraid the underground prog movement will have to remain just that. Underground.

Have you ever considered as well that perhaps the reason that people say they don't like listening to Dream Theater and other types of prog/jazz/what have you is because they >actually don't like it?< God forbid, I hate to think that, too, but generally people don't say they hate things when they really do like it. Previously, I'd subtly thrown in some Spock's Beard into some mixer Cd's for my friend and he really dug the tunes. June especially. So I thought I'd take a chance yesterday and play him "Strange World," my favorite track off of TKoS. Well, everything went alright until the solo when he started griping about the guitar tone. Then slowly my other friends began to chime in, "The singer has a whiny voice," "It's too loud," etc., etc....

I've come to the conclusion that when my friends say they don't like something, it might just actually mean they don't like it. Hmmm... Could be? :)

I just posted about this a couple of days ago. From what I can tell, song for Eric is an a capella (voice only) song written by Tori and released as an a capella piece. From what I have heard, Tori was not pleased to say the least when she'd heard Kevin's "butchery" of her song and almost filed a lawsuit against him. I mean, it takes a LOT to get an a capella piece perfect. Singing without accompaniment is a bitch and what Kevin did could be construed as an insult. Given KevMo's professed passion for Tori we know it wasn't that, but I don't think she knew that. :)

Perhaps Itchy could clarify it as it sounds as though he has a direct link to Kevin, although I doubt it would be a less than delicate topic to bounce off of KevMo at any given time. :)

Anywho... -- KorgX3 goes back to his AutoCAD console.

Leave it to me to take a topic like this and use it to plug a movie, but if any of you want a great illustration of how MTV, Record Companies, and the entertainment business in general work, watch the movie Network. Yes at times it is absurd, it's satire after all, but it also at times a hard hitting accurate portrayal of an America poisoned by capitalism and bad television. It's a great movie, check it out.

Hm, interesting point. I do think that it's interesting that Dream Theater are huge hits in Japan. HUGE. Bigger than big. Ditto for R.E.M. Are they more open minded than Americans when it comes to music? I honestly think so. Society demands an image of some sort for every band to have, but America demands it even more. That's my personal theory why BSB and N'Suck can have such huge followings amongst pre-pubescent young girls. That is to say they have THE image; that pretty boy with sunglasses, short cut hair and five o'clock shadow beard image. The quality of the music ceases to matter real quick when sex becomes a factor. But I think I'll get off my soapbox and attempt to send fewer messages to the 'jam now. :o) === *Trent

Popularity is all about WHO you know. Folks---that is the framework of the entire music industry. I have heard countless band that have made me go apeshit, but because they have poor or sometimes no connections with people in the biz, they usually keep playin in shitty places the rest of their careers (or you could get a scholarship to Berklee) But then again, maybe in the long run, bands with the greatest artisitc content will cast a shadow over all the trendy artists (if they even deserve to be called that)...which means we should all be patient cause one day, OFB will live on to be the Van Gough of Modern Music.

i went to the opening date, and he played with them. the first time he came out, he came out and did a solo, and i think that was it. then, les started playing this riff, and he came out, and acted like a robot, then got some nunchucks and played with them, to the beat of the riff. it was cool. then he played a song with them, but i am not sure what it's called. they did a new song, called "antipop".
