Yeah, yeah yeah, 3 Minute Warning is an improv jam. My point was not that
these guys "can't improv" because we've rarely been given the opportunity to
hear them try (and fail or succeed.) My point is that most LTE stuff seems
to be prewritten, as are almost all of JP's solos. This doesn't mean
thay're bad... I had a long discussion with Gary from Shadow Gallery about
the merits of composed solos and improvised solos... it all comes down to
what seems most appropriate to the player. JP isn't the kind of guitarist
who can improv like he writes. It's not been a goal of his. When he
improvs in a groove, he seems to have a really immensely good sense of
melody (which makes me dream of the day he releases a completely non DT solo
album of tunes that show this other side of his musicianship.) I do not
think that the guy is able to go nuts over changes. I don't think that's
ever been a focus of his study (and if anyone says "He went to Berklee" I
will destroy them). When I was referring to improv in a prog/fusion sense,
I was referring to say... Allan Holdsworth, who I believe improvs all of his
solos. That's always been his focus... big fan of jazz sax plaers and such.
BTW, I am having a Trial of Tears crisis... anyone here heard Dead of Night
by UK? Comparing the solos and the progressions behind the solos to one
another... anyone think anything's a bit fishy? I was so amped about the
fact that there were significant key changes in that solo... that maybe JP
was going to explore a fusion route... and then I heard this tune from about
20 years before FII... and that Derek covers this tune with Planet X...
ouch. :) Well, When the Water Breaks is enough to make me forgive just
about anything. :)
There's been a pretty positive response to the transcription board idea so
far, so I will probably start work on it pretty soon, in one form or
another. It'll either end up on digitalrodent.com or at Ivorygate... dunno
exactly how this will be best worked.... I have a few ideas, but I would
like to be more innovative than to just post asci tabs. Stay tuned.

Man, I remember watching the video for Jump on MTV as a kid back when
MTV had music videos instead of endless shows about people who don't get
along with each other (like we don't see that every day). Which reminds
me, I was also always a big fan of "Panama" (also from the David Lee Roth
era). I don't have any Van Halen albums, but whenever that song comes on
the radio, it always makes me drive fast(er than usual) :)

I was once like you, man. :) Even when the boat is full of holes you
can sometimes paddle it in to shore. However, you can't do it when you've
had your arms ripped off and your teeth kicked in. Some of what you're
saying is just plain wrong, man. It's noble to want to make this a more
pleasant place for newbies, but this is how newbies learn. Every one of us
has gone through it (if we've ever spoken up). I was a SUPREME newbie back
in the day. I was on this list from an AOL account and everything! :) You
MUST look at the FAQ before you ask an obvious question. That's the way it
is everywhere. There are great lists out there that will KICK YOU OFF if
you don't adhere to this. It's one of the things that a new "surfer" has to
learn to do. It's not unlike learning the more advanced options on a search
engine. If the means are before you by which to solve your own problem,
it's irresponsible to make someone else hand you the answers.
I agree that there's no need to go off on someone when telling them to
read the FAQ, but a person on this list who hasn't read the FAQ just has no
leg to stand on. There's no argument to be made... it's in the first
message you get, and the FAQ is more likely than not AVAILABLE wherever that
person found the subscription information for how to join this list. Since
this list IS a service, and does take some work to maintain, you just don't
get the right to bitch about its rules. It's unmoderated. You can say what
you want... there are a lot of cool people here... and one of the FEW things
asked of subscribers is to adhere to the SIMPLE, CLEARLY STATED rules. It
just isn't fair to the subscribers to make them deal with the same questions
over and over again, and it actually TAKES MORE TIME to get a response back
to your question than it would to GO READ THE FAQ. You just have no
argument here.
> >I think some people here are missing the point of having a FAQ in
> the first place.
> The FAQ was not created as an exercise to keep questions off of
> the Ytsejam.
Actually, you're wrong. It was created by members of this list for that
purpose. It was in existence LONG before there was a regularly updated,
well organized official homepage. This list was at one time the first and
last stop for DT info... tha majority of the even MILDLY well done web pages
on DT were related directly to this list, and this list is where the
majority of even the REALLY LAME ones got their info.
There isn't an argument that can be made to say that people on this
list shouldn't have to deal with "go read the FAQ" responses.
And you can go ahead and say "I wasn't trying to make any such argument,"
but it's gonna take a whole lot more than a bit of side stepping and
circular reasoning to sell that one.
READ THE FAQ if you are new to this list. It's a better source of answers
to the older questions than this list will be, and you're bound to learn
some new and interesting shit anyways.

I hope you're not the old-timer Steve Chew who was a frequent poster, like,

greatest bands out there -- Rush! If not, um... I guess you know now. :)
Speaking of Rush, whatever happened to syrinx.yyz.edu? Seems like it
hasn't been updated in months, and I haven't been able to get the live MP3

Bombay (the word) doesn't mean anything at all. It is actually
a corruption of "Mumbai" which is the actual name of the city.
The British couldn't (for some reason) pronounce it correctly and
it got mutated into Bombay.
The same is true of India, which is another British word. The name
of the country is actually Bharat.
I _can't_ be the only other Indian person on this list...pipe
up Partha! :)
For all 32 (!) of you who e-mailed me requests for Vindaloo recipes,
I'll post one to the jam tomorrow when my boss isn't looking over
my shoulder.
And in the new spirit of looking things up in FAQs, I won't tell
you what Mumbai or Bharat means...look it up! :)

Does anyone who has a son get chills when James sings those lyrics during The

I get chills listening to the song as a collective
unit. James goes from kinda passive to just all out
agressive. I've heard people verbally shit on this
song (songs?) so many times and it kinda pisses me off
b/c this is one of DT's greatest moments, if you ask me.

OK, this is very coincidental that somebody brought this up! I just saw

My first 2 listens have been most anjoyable to say the least and LTE2 is a nice taster for the next DT album. So what is WRONG with Yanni ? The guy has talent and is a great composer/keyboardist IMO.
I can also high recommend the new Anathema 'Judgement' CD, IMO the best album from a British band in the last few years. Also currently enjoying the brilliance of new Amorphis and Children Of Bodom. Can someone who has the new Paradise Lost CD tell me how bad it is please ?

All that post was written from the perspective of the neophyte. It's all in character, of course he knows who Rush is, there's a lot of ironic humor in what he writes. I found the whole post to be rather funny, and accurate.

I got a couple complaints about the drums in this cd. . .I think it was Amanda that I am agreeing with on a past posting but Mike's fills are getting predictable and cheesy almost( no offense Mike) I believe he was doing it to give room to the other members of lte which did awesome and I love the sound all together and Jordan is making me lose a stool in my panties. I just dont like the overall drum sound I guess, one major cheesy part is at 1:44 on song 1. I think Mike could've have been a little more creative. Some parts sound like it might not be what the song called for. Otherwise I love the music!!!!!!!! CHuck

Actualy the album has 3 tracks: "Passion Play" (about 15-20 min.), "The Story Of The Hare Who Has Lost His Spectacles" (the funny fairy tale) and "End", which is the conclusion of "Passion Play". You're probably refering to Thick As A Brick, which indeed was splitted on the vynil version.

we all do it, but i think that at some point people must realise that all these things are merely labels. Generally its better to stay away from labeling things too much, it can just piss you off. I think the Doors had a lot of similar ideas to what prog musicians have, they just didn't call it prog back then. btw. on the Dave Matthews Band. In a Guitar World article Dave quotes one of his main influences as Robert Fripp.
