    <<<<
Is "Steinway To Heaven" any Good...
on a scale of 1 to 10 (one being bert and ernie on keyboard and 10 being
God......God can be replaced with either Rochmoninoff or KevMo)
    >>>>

Well, if you consider KevMo to be God, the JR piece (Chopin's
"Revolutionary" Etude) is the work of God's God. "Steinway to Heaven" is
pretty solid, though I disliked David Bryan's interpretation of Beethoven's
"Moonlight Sonata" and Chris Ingles' sorry excuse for an interpretation of
Brahms' "Variations on Paganini". Ingles pretty much established the theme
of the piece and then played little jazz runs over it (I mean, it's not bad,
but that's not what I was looking for on this disc) - so be prepared...

Overall I'd give it a 7 out of 10 - for the reasons mentioned above and the
fact that Jordan's K2500 piano patch sounds better than the recordings on
    the rest of the album...

    > CS is, in the
    > mainstream, one of the most underrated bands of
    > all time.

I'll have to go ahead and disagree with this statement. I don't think CS is
underrated, I think CS's music is just taken like you would take a Matchbox
20, Days of the New, or Blink 182. People aren't expecting their music to
be meaningful or deep (though WE all know it is), so they listen to it for
two weeks, toss it aside, and never listen to it again (anyone remember Ace
of Base?). Very few people in the mainstream music listening group realize
or care about the depth of music. There are two types of people in this
world: those who listen to music in the background, and those who, when they
are listening to music, do little else. Only people of the second type,
IMHO, can fully realize the depth and meaning of a certain piece of music.

And take this with you: the very best bands go unnoticed for a LONG time
before being discovered by the mainstream populous, if they EVER get
discovered. I would much rather have CS (who sell platinum albums already)
stay further away from the mainstream and retain their musical integrity
than have them sell out. Wouldn't you?

    > Gallery? and which album?

Enchant - Highly recommended by many. More "mellow"
than ST and S-X. Nice keyboards with mood. But songs
tend to be slower and more like ballads. Drumming is
    considered very good.

Tempest - Stay away, unless you like Irish folk rock.

Shadow Gallery - Beware. Highly recommended by many.
Considered way too cheesy by many. Best to listen
    before buying.

Lemur Voice/Insights - Give this one a try. Kinda like
DT mixed with Fates Warning and Queensryche. Very
KevMo style keyboards. Some people have a problem with
the singer's poor pronunciation of english.

Vanden Plas/The God Thing - Another very similar to
    Awake era DT. Get it.

    > Are the other 2 Symphony X cd's as good as "Divine
    Wings of Tragedy".

Very close. Since we know that you like Symph-X,
you'll want to pick up Twilight in Olympus and The
    Damnation Game.

About new Therion, I have this Summer 99 Nuclear Blast catalogue/magazine
which mentions Crowning of Atlantis several times. There's a review of it and
an interview with Christofer Johnsson, but they're both in German. I have no
idea what they say, but I can make some of it out, and it seems to me like
this new CD has some cover songs, some live stuff, and some different
versions of old songs. One line says "eine neue Version von Clavicula Nox."
Also in the interview, it says "Therion Coversongs" and goes on to list bands
Like Manowar, Accept, Primal Fear, and more. And finally, "drei klasse
Livetracks das Album ab." Also, it says "Mini-CD" a lot. So, I'm just going
by `context clues`, its a wild guess, but it seems appropriate seeing as they
just released an album last year and then toured. they wouldnt have time to
make a new one so fast.

    >< SORRY!!!!! Wrong list!!! ><

    well, it's still relevant here.

I know we've got a ton of techie people here and I have a (Dali's?) dilemma.
    I'm the Drafter/Designer/Network Admin/Computer
    Analyst/Pretty-much-underpaid-for-overworking-guy for the small Engineering
firm I work at and I've hit a snag in the last two days:

We run a small 13 client network on Windows NT through TCP/IP. The Boss
wants every computer on the network to have full internet access(!), so I
said "I think we can do that." So I bought a 56k modem, installed it in the
NT server (somehow miraculously on the 1st try), got a copy of WinProxy, and
set the ball rolling. The problem I've come across is that even though I've
gone over all of the settings within WinProxy and all the client machines,
'net sharing works superbly, etc., the overall performance of the network
has decreased phenominally. I'm not schooled in netspeak so I'm not sure
what the problem is exactly, but it seems like a major bandwidth problem,
even though we're running a full duplex 100BaseT network. ICQ seemed to be
the culprit, but the problem still occurs randomly. Perhaps someone here
has had a similar problem? :) Any info would be greatly appreciated.

PRIVATE MAIL ONLY! :) I hate to clutter this place with blah any more than
    I already have.
    Thanks!

Iced Earth is making it bigtime. In the latest Columbia House "Music Mix" newsletter's "Buzz Bin" section ("new" stuff)...

Iced Earth Something Wicked This Way Comes. Iced Earth is the complete metal band - powerful, intense, intelligent and *loud*. Packing enough velocity and ferocity to band your head to dust, their roaring guitars and bone-battering rhythms create the impenetrable "wall of sound" on 'Consequences'; 'My Own Savior'; 'Birth Of The Wicked'; 'Stand Alone' and more. Pretty lame review, but it's better than nothing.

The ability needed to perform a given piece of music is in no way related to its relative value. If one plays something extremely difficult (ie. something I can't play), am I not allow to judge its musical merit? That sounds like bullshit. According to the logic found in the quoted matter, if the reader is unable to play "chopsticks" on the instrument of his choice, then said reader is unable to dislike anything as difficult or more difficult than the aforementioned musical composition. Like I said. Bullshit.

    > Vindaloo is just about the hottest curry dish you can get - > avoid if you have never tried curry!!!

You surprise me! Most Brits - or at least those who have been students, would have gone one step further after too many beers and been brave enough to try a Phal.

The order of 'hotness' in Manchester curry houses, going from the mildest to the hottest used to be

    - korma (only for wimps) - madras (respectably hot) - vindaloo (bloody hot) and - phal (Arrggh I think I'm burning inside)

Various establishments encouraged the student trade, by touting even hotter extremes, such as

    - Charlie's special and - Suicide (aptly named)

These were usually attempted on a Friday evening and if you needed less than the entire weekend to recover from the after-effects then you were deemed to have a superhuman constitution.

Of course, young people today are probably competing over who can eat the hottest chilli .... or whatever

    Charlie
