What!!!! 50 pages! Is this for real??
I can get Billboard here in the UK, but only this weeks edition (19th
June). Is there anyone stateside who can confirm that this really
happened and can tell me anything of the nature of this spread.
I.E. Was it just advertising or were there real articles? What bands
were covered? Was it mainly the re-formed 'giants of the 80's, or
were many new bands included? Was it mainly slanted towards
US bands or European?
Any info would be gratefully received. Thanks.

I'm almost on the same stage. I have SG's TYRANNY... which is GREAT... and
besides, it features almost 10 seconds of La Brie....Really dunno about
their other discs, there are sooo many things to hear...
Just wanted to quickly comment To anyone that has not heard "Stiletto in

This piece threw me way off...I guess Ive put DT on such a high pedastal
that i didn't "Really" believe another band could harness that fire (from
the I&W/AWAKE days)

How come John Myung is mentioned in the jam so little. I love the way he plays the bass in
all the songs. I think with the spotlight so much on Mike, JP and the keyboard player he is
like a ghost. though I am a guitar player myself but I love the bass. Is it that he is not
innovative enough (with the tunes) or what? It's sad but I loved what he did on Trial of
Tears and Hells Kitchen.
One question tho, with his 6 string, does he have a low B and a High C or just EADGBE like
MP?

I got the Carpe Diem CD and they do not sing the fills like on OIALT
during ACOS.

The ability needed to perform a given piece of music is in no way related to
its relative value. If one plays something extremely difficult (ie.
something I can't play), am I not allow to judge its musical merit? That

the reader is unable to play "chopsticks" on the instrument of his choice,
then said reader is unable to dislike anything as difficult or more difficult

Yup. I'm glad someone exposed this BS argument. This "if you can't do
better then you can't criticize it" attitude is completely illogical and
utterly useless. If we apply this reasoning to other areas of life, it would
mean that those of us without culinary skills could not complain if we
received terrible food at a restaurant. It would mean that I could not
criticize Faulkner since I could not produce greater literary works than he.
I could not say that the new Star Wars disappointed me (since I could not
have created a better film). It also would mean that we could not complain
about governmental issues if we ourselves did not have a "better solution."
But there's no need to extend this line of reasoning to my (somewhat
dubious) analogies: applied only to music, it still falls flat on its face. I
myself am no musician, and cannot play "chopsticks," to use the example cited
above. Does this mean that because I could not create a more compelling song
than *fill in what you consider the worst music you've heard*, or any song at
all for that matter, I cannot dislike any type of music? I don't see how my
musical inability voids my critical appraisal of a certain band or album.
If your implication was simply that we should not condemn (as in, not
merely express dislike, but declare "inherently bad" by some nonexistent
absolute standard of musical merit) anyone else's taste in music, I would
agree to a certain extent. Condemning a person's taste in music is (somewhat)
like criticizing a person's taste in food; my saying that Band-X sucks really
will not affect whether or not you like Band-X any more than my saying that
pizza sucks will affect whether or not you enjoy pizza, and thus is a rather
counterproductive activity (although one which is nonetheless fun and
occupies much space on the Jam :).
But I really doubt from the tone of your post that your point was
that we should not condemn others' music at all, considering that you called
those who do not share your musical tastes "fuckers." And, by the way--just
so people don't misinterpret what I mean by "condemning" others' musical
tastes--I do enjoy hearing opinions (negative and positive) about music. What
I dislike is the back-and-forth criticism of others' opinions ("DT rules!"
"No, DT sucks!" "No, DT rules!") that goes nowhere. The essential point here
is that everyone has a right to like or dislike your music, and that people's
opinions cannot be discounted merely because they could not produce better
music themselves.

I think it can have some merit, though not how it was used. When
someone's a bad ass, talking smack... for instance, if I was to say
"Paradigm Shift is a fucking JOKE. That's a cakewalk!" and Mike said "Oh
yeah? You get up here and do it then." I think it serves to put an ego in
check. But as far as a person's ability to perform what he hears, that
has no bearing on his or her ability to rate and berate music. If you had
to be able to outplay Yngwie to cut him down, then I doubt there's more
than 4 or 5 people on this list who could cut him down, if that. It's not
an argument against someone's opinion... it's an argument against
someone's ego. I hope this isn't going to be a new thread topic.
How about this, though... does anyone (Mike?) know if Jordan just doesn't
like old school analog sounds for leads? Is he going to use the same lead
sound on the new DT? Jordan has a great control over instruments with
faster decay (piano and bells etc) but his choice in lead sounds just
seems really dead next to Derek. Even Kevin's DW8000 had a better lead
sound, IMO. I know it's subjective, so I wonder what Jordan's take is.
You would think that as the DW8000 is available for >$500 and Jordan's
Kurzweils go for <$2000 there would be some kind of competetive sounds on
there. I'm not asking if anyone here is BETTER than Jordan, but does
anyone know if the board he uses can GET a better lead sound? It's a
total song killer for me, hearing that tone! Man, I'm such a prick, but I
can't let it go... it's like Mike choosing to use that triggered snare
sound on the next album... some things are harder to deal with than
others, and no matter how poor the relationship with Derek may have been
or may have become, I would be shocked to hear that the guys didn't think
his tone was happenin'.

Well first things first - I bought Voivin and then sold it.
I love some choral music (particularly 15-16 century stuff
as well earlier), but their stuff doesn't work for me. If you
want to hear a master of voices at work, listen to
Monteverdi, all else pales beside that (IMHO of course).
Anyway, the therion disk is out in Europe and I've seen
others talk about it - so here's what I've gleaned:
Format: Digipack
Contents: 10 songs - including
"A Arab Zaraq Lucid Dreaming" - taken from a compilation
3 newies: "Crowning Of Atlantis ", " Mark Of Cain "
and " From The Dionysian Days ".
3 covers: "Crazy Nights" from Loudness, "Thor"
- Manowar and "Seawinds" - Accept.
3 live songs: "To Mega Therion", "The Wings Of The Hydra"
and "Black Sun"
The new songs are apparently in the same line as 'Voivin',
the remix is a real remix, the live songs have evidently been
touched up in the studio and the covers are performed in
an original manner
Since this is being issued at a cheap price, the opinion of
those I've read (who actually like Therion), is that it is well
worth getting hold of.

Magna Carta is no fucking guarantee! ;)
Seriously though, Ice Age is (IMO, at least) a pretty awesome new band
that basically rides the line between prog-rock and prog-metal. Decent
vocals, good keys, also some nice guitar and drum work IMO. I'd
definitely recommend picking up "The Great Divide"

The other Mike is Michael Romeo, who is SX's guitarist. If you like
HEAVY prog-metal, Symphony X is your kinda band! They have GREAT
vocals, very crunchy guitar rhythms, and some fast neo-classical style
guitar (and key) shred solos. Unless swords-and-sorcery fantasy lyrics
annoy you, you must check out "Divine Wings of Tragedy". "Twilight in
Olympus" is also good, but "Divine Wings..." is the one to get first
IMO.

debut album first... You'll like it, but you'll wonder if 'that band'
doesn't have more potential. Then get the Damnation game and be amazed.
For even more excitement get Twilight next,... and just when you're asking
yourself if those guys can still do better, THEN get your hands on Divine
Wings... This'll be the culmination of all your S-X expieriences...:-)
No, really, I started with Symphony X (the album) and I got the other
albums in that order. I thought they were just getting better and
better... If I got them the other way around, i would've been disappointed
by the time I reached their first album...
