I picked up Spock's Beard's 'Day For Night' CD
yesterday. It came down to a choice between SB and
Incubus' 'SCIENCE' album. I flipped a coin and
    Spock's Beard won the day.

And I'm sorry it did. This could be the worst CD I've
ever heard in my entire life. Seriously, I was
listening to it and all the vocal harmony and stuff
make it sound like a Christian music CD. Bleh.

To anyone who might have been considering picking this
CD up, I say pass on it. I may develop a taste for
this CD later on, but I don't see it happening. The
cheesy lyrics alone will probably keep me out.

    >anyone know if the board he uses can GET a better lead sound? It's a
    >total song killer for me, hearing that tone! Man, I'm such a prick, but

heheh. I dunno. I've played a couple of Kurzweil's, good ones, too, and
can't ever remember finding a lead sound that even resembled "Chewbacca on
Crack and Steroids." I totally agree wtih Chris, Derek's lead sounds rocked
the boat, and I think Derek's solos and odd sounds are my favorite things in
FII. Now, I love hearing Jordan do those sweet intricate piano runs and
I'll even admit I thought the accordian solo was a nice touch, but those
cheap plastic kazoo/non-decaying-violin sounding analog solos are dated,
imo. Unfortunately, that's all I can use for now on the X3, as that's all
    it came with.

What we need to do mostly, though, is introduce the Rude-man to a Korg
Trinity with a ribbon controller. Holy shit, those things are nuts. :)
It's amazing what they can do to a simple sound just tapping on them or
running your finger back and forth across them while playing. If Jordan had
one of these he would be unstoppable, I think. :)

If we apply this reasoning to other areas of life, it would >mean that those of us without culinary skills could not complain if we >received terrible food at a restaurant.

No, it means that you cant tell the cook how to do it better unless you know how.. Whether you like the taste of the meal (which is what you mean when you say "it was terrible") is a subjective thing. You are right in claiming that that is your proviledge. What you cannot say for example is "it needs more butter" unless you are experienced in cooking. People make the mistake of thinking those are the same things. When you appreciate something as a listener it is different than when you critic things as a musician. They are NOT EQUAL. One is a subjective judgement based upon your preferences. The other is a comparison based upon your experience. One is an inate priveledge, the other has to be earned. I bet you wouldnt appreciate people coming up to you an criticising the way you do your job unless they had the experience to do so. Thats an imperfect analogy but it tries to illustrate the point.

Its not that yo have to be "better" in order to criticise someones methods, but you at least have to be knowledgable.

If you like the LITS intro, then Planet X will be your album. It is closer to the LITS intro than Platypus, but it goes WAY BEYOND the LITS intro. Perhaps Portnoy has heard it and would like to share his thoughts. Planet X is Derek being Derek. Self-indulgent? hell yeah.

Hi. I am a bass player and after Geddy Lee , John Myung is my greatest influence; and I must confirm that he is really a very important part of DT. The bas lines in most of the songs are like the structure of it; and he doesn't allways makes it complex; he is the only one, - maybe sometimes after KevMo - that combines perfectly complexity and musicality, just hear those harmonics...

Anyway, think about it, what can be more diffcult than preventing that Mike and JohnP just sound like some noises apart...

It's really difficult to say who's the best in DT, because they are all the bests in what they play...

    Saludos...

Hey everyone. I just saw "Saving Private Ryan." Great movie. Anyway-my question-even though it doesn't relate to DT, I figure someone has to know this. There was a song about the five Sullivan boys that are mentioned in the movie. It came out about 3 or 4 years. Can anyone tell me what the title is and who the artist is please. It was a real cool song. Plus, it's driving me crazy trying to sing it in my head. Thanks a bunch TW "I sit down with my son, set to see the Crimson Sunset"

Has anyone been to the circus lately? I just recently went to the circus (3 hours ago) and I noticed the background band. It was actually quite good stuff the drummer had somewhat of a dbl bass thing going and the guitarist reminded me that of Joe Satriani. There was also a trumpet player and some other certain instruments in there, but man it was almost pure prog. Anyway Im loving the accordian solo on Another Dimension, its definitely cool! CHuck

If you drummers out there havent heard Virgil Donati will be on this album and if you read the recent Modern Drummer with him in it you would know he practices up to ten houurs a day no exceptions!!!!!!!! He has even stayed away from any type of realtionship such as marriage or children because of his practicing! What an animal! CHuck

    Hi jammers,

I actually (for once!) have some for real and for true DTC! :) And this might start a nice discussion, so here goes.

I was listening to Trial of Tears from Disc 2 of Once in a Livetime. I'm groovin' along to the "free form" intro, and something around 1:30 strikes me as not quite right, so I backed it up. It was that section of temple blocks that's like "The Trees." It just bugged me really bad. So after some listening to a Rush CD and back to OIAL, I realized that the temple blocks seemed rushed for the first 3 sets, and then it seemed to space out properly.

That made me think of 2 things. First, it bothers me to have something so rushed on an actual release. I mean, if this had been the fan club CD, I could live with it. But this is something made for public consumption. So wouldn't they have chosen a different version of this (like from another night of the tour)?

Second, Mike's a great musician, and I have all the respect in the world for him. So why would he do this? Was it simply messing up (as we are all apt to do), or was he just going along with the "free form" theme that they were all playing?

Either way, the CD is released, so there's nothing that can be done about it. It just bugged me, so I thought I'd share. Any other assholes, er, opinions, on the free form issue? ;) Thoughtful discussion only. Flames will politely be ignored. With liberty and justice for all, amen. :)

I can't tell the difference between analog and digital sounds (Aren't they all digital now? At least digital representations of old analog sounds?), but some of Jordan's leads sound a lot like the old sounds that Jan Hammer used to use. I think I read somewhere that Jordan was a fan of Jan Hammer. Personally, I was never really fond of Jan Hammer's lead sound. I always thought of it as a "old" synth sound... I don't know if that's the tone that hurts your ear or not.
