    My 2 cents:

I *MUCH* prefer songs which have been composed in advance. It allows
songs/solos to take unexpected turns here and there which could not
otherwise exist. I personally found 3MW on LTE1 very interesting (in that
it gave me some insight into how these guys interact) but I rarely listen to
it due to its lack to real musical content.

Haven't heard LTE2 yet but I was relieved to hear that "When the Water
    Breaks" was composed in advance.

    Rob.

Yep, me too. And dig this, being the faithful dum-dum that I am (snort)
decide to go ahead and pre-order Planet X through CDNow. To top it off, I
also decide to order Chroma Key through there to get a message that it's

dreams of earning enough "points" to get a CDNow t-shirt (sarcasm).

BTW, I heard a really cool song on 97 Rock (out of Buffalo, NY) the other
night. It was called "Ripple" and sounded like Marillion, but I assume was
Genesis. My question is that I could not tell if it was Peter Gabriel
singing or Phil Collins. Can anybody enlighten me?

At the risk of being redundant again... but anyway, also there's a working
    win-32 port of pvoc here: http://www.panix.com/~jens/stuff/pvoc.exe . It's
free, and despite being a bit inefficient, it doubles the length (without
affecting the pitch, and without chopping-type artifacts) 2 megabytes of
44100/stereo audio in about a minute on a P300.. invoke it, weirdly
    enough, with "pvoc -N2048 -T2.0 -Yinfile.wav -0outfile.wav"

Interestingly, MP3 is already a spectral format so stretching an MP3 file
maybe could be done real time. But not as a winamp plugin I think because
you'd need to access the raw spectral stream and the winamp plugs are hooked
in after it's decoded. I think.

Of course. But this sounds suspiciously like WORK, and technique is the
easy way out, really! For every hour of practice one can put in, every
level of mechanical speed and accuracy one can achieve, I always imagine a
couple of *hundred* 13-year-old students in China that can do the same
thing while standing on their head and flying a kite.

FWIW my advice to any keyboardists would be to sacrifice some finger speed,
at least a LITTLE, and practice using their ears! But that's just me. I've
been known to be spectacularly wrong, occasionally, like many other people. :)

15 is one of those numbers that just screams to be broken in primes. FWIW
one of my favorite examples of 5*3/16 is the middle section of UK's
"Carrying no Cross". (Bozzio on drums.. who else)

Head over to the Perpetual Motion board, where everyone there is pissing themselves over Ice Age. As a rule, if people there are unenthusiastic about somehting, it's either 1) INSANELY GREAT (i.e. they've misse the boat) or 2) is the worst thing every recorded (in which case their lack of enthusiasm is accurate). If they rave about something, stay away. Very far away. Guess you know where I fall on Ice Age.

    Hi there,

    >Mike Portnoys long hair :( >Where is it ??? >Why he cut it??

Well, it worked for Metallica and Queensryche, so he wanted to give it a try. Actually it's just more comfortable, especially while being on tour. I really liked the middle-long cut he got first, he was looking like Animal more than ever back then ;-)

    > I think the Doors had a lot of similar ideas to what prog musicians >have, they just didn't call it prog back then.

After listening to the demos for L.A. Woman the late Paul Rothchild called it "bar music" and refused to produce the album. How's that for a label? Progressive bar music. Maybe he was right, but then Riders On The Storm is the greatest bar music song of all time.

If you call Pink Floyd progressive, then The Doors definitely were, too. Just like Deep Purple and many others.

Well, there may be other versions of the CD out there, but my version of the Passion Play CD has only a single 42 minute track. The original release of the CD had two tracks which preserved the artificial break that the album had in the middle of the Hare story. You're right of course about the "song" really being split into two halves by the "intermission" (ie. the Story of the Hare...). The whole album was presented as a kind of play, with the booklet looking like a playbill, listing the members of the band as actors and so on. It's all tongue-in-cheek. My version of Thick as a Brick still preserves the artificial break in the middle where the first album side ended. I'd like to find a version where there wasn't a gap at that point. Having the whole thing as a single track is a bit of a pain though, if you ever want to find a particular section. I guess it would be nice to have separate tracks which ran together without a gap so the two sides flowed more smoothly.

Is the new Anathema disc out already? Or do you have some kind of advance copy?! Is it as good as Alternative 4 and Eternity (the only two I currently have)?

As for Amorphis' Tuonela, that disc does kick some ass, but I think I like Elegy a little better.

He said he didn't like DT because "There aren't enough words."-? his fav band is Corn Bizkit that type of shit. Anyway, I wasn't aware that his father had passed away a few years ago. kinda like Banzai! except it doesn't mean anything, and like Rahul beat me to saying, that's like, the official name of the city formerly known as bombay these days, and like someone else gamely tried to point out is NOT the capital of India.....gamely because the guy forgot to put the NEW in front of Delhi which would correctly identify the proper Capital City of the great, nuclear-enhanced but with plenty of other flaws too, nation of India....

awright, where to begin?? Aloo means potato in Bengali, too, for what its worth, "vind" kinda gets at "bhindi" which refers to okra, but as has been demonstrated, a vindaloo is neither a potato nor an okra, so I'm talking out my ass at this point....

I've always felt that the most emotion in the song was at the end of Carpe Diem when they go into the odd time with the heavy snare content (~Preparing for her flight~). THat part really shook me up the first time I heard it, and the (well I don't wanna start a flame war here...).. well I was listening to the original and the "Please Don't Go!" right after that part had AMAZING emotion on the part of James, and the way they jumped into Darkest of Winters right after that was INTENSE.

i hate saying this cause i dig petrucci so much (obviously), but i guess what i find lacking in his playing is that he seems to play all his improvisational lines over scale fragments.. he just plays really really fast over a very limited scope of the neck e.g. the solo on OiaLT.. it's just a buncha speed picking.. it's lacks fluidity.. so yes.. i agree with chris.. it's not necessarily a bad thing cause improv doesn't seem to be one of his musical aspirations.. JP is a god of composition but put him in a jam situation and it's not the same guitarist..
