I got my copy of "The God Thing" from a friend (thanks Geo) who I think
got it from Laser's Edge. it's hard enough trying to find prog metal
here, but don't expect to be seeing any VP cd's around in the US. For
now, I think we're going to have to settle with online companies.

I remember checking Derek's profile on AOL right after he left, to see
if anything had changed. Before, under occupation, it had said
keyboardist for Dream Theater (or something to that extent) and after,
it said "Being a schmuck ona global lavel". Don't know if it was
significant.. but it seemed indicative of some negative feelings. I
"kinda" met Derek at at King's X show, and he seemed like Mr. Hollywood
to me. I think he belongs in KISS more than DT, while Jordan seems to
fit in really well.

Hey
Here are my comments on a few of the latest topics.
-For those that have e-mailed me personally about my questions-thanks you for
your help. It was exactly what I needed. As for the Doc's answers-WELL?!?!?
-I would consider JP, JM & MP to be the best at their respective instruments.
I think JL is a terrific singer (maybe not the best) but has great range and
excellent feeling in his voice. As a drummer, I do not like many free form
guitar solos but JP's are great. I do enjoy his playing. JM is the fastest
bass player I've ever heard, though I usually listen for the drum parts.
-Since Christian rock is the latest argument, does anyone remember the band
Whitecross from the early 90's? They were pretty good, even though the songs
were a little "poppy." Other "Christian themed" songs that have been put our
by major artists include "Jesus Christ Pose" by Soundgarden, "Quicksand
Jesus" by Skid Row and "Your Savior" & "Wooden Jesus" by Temple of the Dog.
These all have a pretty good message. I think it is very bold of a mainstream
band to record, release and perform songs like this. Until I read the lyrics
I though it said "Jesus on the ceiling, the Devil in my bed." Woops! My bad.
-I think all the albums have their own certain appeal. I&W is outstanding
with a great mix of songs, feelings and emotions. FII is very heavy in most
songs (which I prefer)-very guitar driven, I feel. And Awake is lighter and
more keyboard inspired. I think that is what makes OIALT so awesome. It has
such a great diversity of songs. The first 3 songs on the second cd are
beautiful and sound great back to back. Then, as James says "Enough
sympathy." I can listen to it over and over. I would have liked Derek's solo
to have been longer like the other two guys but it was still great.
-I was in Best Buy today (I don't know it they are nationwide-but they are an
over priced, sell everything electric or music oriented store) and, as
always, checked my DT section. The stupid asses have Dream Theatre on the
card. What a bunch of wanks!
-One final question, how can there be a reply from my letter in the same jam
that my letter was in? What's up with that?

Cliche?! I find the lyrics to be anything but... cliche I suppose is
anything confined to rhyme, Kev's lyrics lack any form of structure and he
has admitted that he often just starts singing random nonsense and that ends
up in the songs. However, I think the lyrics make a lot of sense and are
great. This is something I've been wondering Jammers, everytime someone
posts about an album, they mention cheesy lyrics, and it's ALWAYS a
different style. What does everyone find cheesy and what does everyone find
good? Personally I think the death & desolation lyrics of death and black
metal are cheesy as hell, whereas the contemplating lyrics of Chroma Key,
and the therapeutic lyrics of DT I find great. What does everyone think, cuz
this is something I've been very curious about lately.
I think DT lyrics are great, but I find the lyrics of my fav band TooL to be
most amazing.

You are in grave danger...be quick about this...grab that CD right now and
put a match under it.
That album is nowhere near prog.
But early Genesis (maybe mid Genesis) is definitely prog. Check out some of
their earlier stuff (like Foxtrot). Just remember these albums are pretty
old, and sound a bit like it when compared to modern stuff. But they are,
to me, the biggest prog element in our history (not excluding KC and Yes, of
course). Also, check out Selling England by the Pound (what I consider my
all time favorite prog album).

with yourself, seeing as how the fish era IS the older stuff :)
maybe those olde genesis connections apparent in early Marillion are thre
reason I love the fish-era stuff so much and haven't really been able to get
into the Hogarth stuff yet....
(i would have had an exact quote and correct citation, but somewhere along
the way I cutted and pasted something else after cutting and preparing but
not exactly getting around to pasting said quote)
another quote of interest, the "rectum puckering vocals" bit from Derek's
note, as passed on to the jam.....near ytse hall of fame material, methinks,
regardless of who the quote was directed at.....evil imagery, the sound of
one person's voice making another's bowels shrink.....that happens to me on
occasion when I throw in a Bjork disc......

Hi!
Some good recommendations in your list, Steve. Interesting to see,
though some albums seem to be everyone's darling, it still seems to
be a matter of taste.
So I'm really surprised that no one mentionend King Crimson's Larks'
Tongues In Aspik yet. It's the first album with the core lineup
Fripp/Wetton/Bruford. Very weird stuff, like most Crim albums, but
the two title tracks (pt. 1 and 2) are among the most aggressive and
heavy prog songs of all time. But the most surprising thing is, that
they still sound fresh. They could put them on a 90s Crimson album
and you wouldn't notice.
Don't forget Nursery Crime by Genesis, it doesn't stand out like
Selling England but is still one of their best albums.
Rush is a very special case. I never understood why everybody seems
to love Moving Pictures. I'm trying to get into it for years, and
well, it's ok, has some great stuff on it, but it never became a
personal favorite. What about A Farewell To Kings? C'mon, Xanadu and
Cygnus X-1 alone should be enough reason to put it on a best-of list!
And am I still the only Gentle Giant fan on this list? Get Free Hand,
The Power And The Glory, and Octopus *now*!

On second thoughts cliched isnt the word to describe it. I am starting to get into the lyrics a bit more. I guess that in Dream Theater his lyrics were more poetic and a bit more tense. Also I think James' vocals always brought a lot out of the vocals. Its the lyrics in DA4R like in Colorblind, Undertow and On the Page that bug me.

I love colorblind. I love the message in On the Page but will admit that the execution is a bit trite. On the Page is when he was still TRYING to write songs. Colorblind is more relaxed imo, and I understand it completely... or at least think I do ;)

With all these "King Crimson Talks" ; it makes me wondering why their album "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" never mentioned ? IMHO this is one of their DRASTIC turning point. It also the album that change Bill Brufford style in drumming; b/c the influence of Jamie Muir (percussionist; now a Buddhist monk in Nepal, if I'm not mistaken=85). An= d this Muir also involved in some Avant Garde grup "The Music Improvisation Company"; breaking things=85=3D)

Hi all
just have to wade in here and give you my 2 Euro-cents worth on this topic.
When I was young (honest, I was young once) Genesis used to be referred to as rock theatre, and I think that was a very fitting description. Go look at the cover of the first live album - all members other than Peter Gabriel sitting down, Gabriel center stage all dressed up. And anybody else who, like myself, was lucky enough to see the original tour for "The Lamb" will also tell you that rock theatre is a much better term for what Genesis used to do (before Steve Hackett left and Mr. Collins over-inflated ego took over). Genesis now remind me of some old punch-drunk boxer who doesn't know when to quit - sad, really.
