i don't believe i've seen em mentioned, so i'll throw in a name: Strunz &
Farah. Ok, two names. these dudes kick ass at flamenco guitar. Jorge
Strunz and Ardeshir Farah - one is (i believe) american and the other is
from (don't kill me for this generalization) the middle east, i'm not sure
what country (guess which is which :). sorry, i'm just not up on my strunz
& farah trivia :) anyways, back when i was basically strictly a metalhead
and listened to joe satriani and steve vai simply to go "listen to that!
that's fast!", my friend gave me a copy of Primal Magic (that he stole
from his mom, hehe) saying check these guys out, they can shred as fast as
the dudes you listen to on an ACOUSTIc. so i checked it out and fell down,
and then once i got into the musical part of music and not just the
technical, i realized their songs are good too. check them out. moo.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a website with the old style Dream Theater font going up and down, rather than left to right....I want a jpg, gif, or bmp of the old style font going up/down so I can make some cassette covers...my program won't let me rotate it....Any help would be greatly appreciated ! that's cause mclaughlin and dimeola don't have a flamenco vibe :).. they're the biggest, baddest jazz monsters ever!! paco definately gives the trio a latin feel, but it's not exactly flaminco.. but that's besides the point because Friday Night in SF kicks ass!! also their newest release "the guitar trio" i like almost as much..

This is pretty funny. Strunz and Farah were originally scheduled to play at the TLA in Philly on the night that LTE ended up playing. There were a few people in line before the show who had not gotten the word, so we had to give them the bad news, though there were two guys who had heard of Dream Theater, and so we told them if they liked guitar, they might want to stick around. They ended up staying for the whole show, had a kickass time, and even hung around out front waiting for the guys after. Only catch was, they paid $32 to see the same show that I saw for $17. I think they still got their money's worth. :)

I'll have to agree with Steffan, a DT tribute is just fucking lame... half those bands are DT clones... so hearing them try to do DT songs as perfectly as possible is not that interesting... now if you had bands like Corrossion of Conformity, Sevendust, Fear Factory, Slayer or something doing DT covers, THAT might be interesting... or even bands like Spock's Beard, King Crimson (hahahah, DT should be doing KC covers)...

Remember them, I burned more than a few tanks of gas looking for it the day it came out! I have been a Chris Poland fan since the first time I saw Megadeth in Trenton N.J. and passed out during the opening band. And the second time I saw them in Brooklyn, NY at LaMore(sp?) when his stack caught fire. Not real good reasons to like a musician, but I certainly will never forget each experience! I will also never forget seeing DTM open up for Voi Vod in Philly. There were about 25 people in the Trocodaro. Three of us in front of the stage. It was kind of a shame because no one was into them. But it was also kinda cool. Anyway, yes that CD does rule! As does his solo CD before DTM. It was called Return to Metopolis. A MUST HAVE ! ! ! A friend sent me some info about a new band Chris is in. It called OHM. You can get more info at www.thuntek.net/~rich/ohm/index.html There is some RealAudio clips on that page, and they sound very cool.

Also, my first DT show was the Philly show just after x-mas last year. I stood next to a couple that had been into DT for several years. One of the bands we talked about was DTM. The guy said that he had a promo CD from DTM which had some unreleased stuff on it. If any one has this and is in a position to make a CD-R or wants to trade, PLEASE email me.

Which one? Mosh or Itchy? :)

BTW, I >think< I have a very legitimate DT-related question to ask. Yes, the perveyor of all ytse-knowledge is lacking on current events, so rape me with a garden weasel...

Question: Who is producing the new album?

I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere. :P I just read somewhere they were recording at Bear Tracks... Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that where they recorded I&W? Back to basics? :) As long as they aren't working with Prater again.... :P Those drums... those DRUMS! They drive me MAD!!!!

Anyway. Just thought I'd ask, so if anyone would care to enlighten me, please feel free. Light Bulb enemas are, as always, optional. -- KorgX3 thinks the new album should be called, "Cauliflower Testicles." NP: Windows NT 4.0 Installer

Never knew he ever was in Megadeth (I'm not much of a fan of them), but I definetely heard of Chris Poland. He's the head of the recording company, called EclipseRecords now (www.eclipserecords.com) - they do thrash-death-doom kinda stuff, I own a CD by a band called Cipher that was released in Eclipse -nothing really outstanding, but overall it's a really nice CD, slight resemblance to Bruce Dickinson...

We will begin work on the new Dream Theater CD this coming week.... We will begin writing and recording on Monday, Feb. 8th 1999 at Bear Tracks Studios in Suffern, NY with engineer Doug Oberkirker. (same studio and engineer as I&W, Live at the Marquee and ACOS....)

We will self-produce (with a mixer TBA) and spontaniously write & record (ala LTE). (The big difference will be that we will have 2-3 months to do it, instead of 1-2 weeks.)

Recording will probably last through to May, as we will take March off for the birth of my son......

We are very excited to begin the latest chapter of DT history and begin "the Jordan era".....

The music will be all new and freshly written material...

For everybody inquiring about Metropolis Pt. 2: the only comment I will give is that we hope to be able to incorporate it, but if we do, it will definately be different from the version we wrote with Derek as we want to have a fresh start with Jordan....

This is all I will comment on it for quite a while, so spread the word.......

    Howdy!

It took me over two hours to get caught up on the jams.. Whew! I've been busy building another kick ass pair of speakers. I have all the components and am 70% finished constructing the cabinets. The thinnest wood I'm using is 1"! Fucking heavy though. The main cabinets are going to be about 135 lb. each, empty! The satellite cabinets will weigh about 40 lb. each loaded and finished.

I'm using a digital camera to illustrate this project and I plan on placing the plans & photographs on my web page shortly after I have them finished and tested.

The material costs are going to be about $1735.00 This includes the cost of having a cabinet shop do all the critical cutting. This does not include the exterior finishing. (You could just paint them) I'm going to veneer mine in a dark cherry wood and finish them with a high gloss. I also am going to have a slate top on the main cabinets. The slate will be recessed into the top and be resting on a gel mat. The satellite cabinets will be using an MTM (D'Appolito) dual midrange configuration, with the tweeter sandwiched between the midrange drivers. Killer imaging! The reason for the slate-over-gel top is to isolate the satellite cabinets from vibration, they will be placed on top of the mains. The slate-over-gel is optional. I've been quoted $500.00 for the cut-to-order slate tops. The gel pads are cheap. This in NOT included in the $1700.00 minimum cost.

I know $1700.00 sounds like a ton to spend on a DIY project, however, to purchase a similar commercially manufactured speaker system it would set you back at least $6500.00. I warn you though, it will take over 100 hours to build these. Isn't that half the fun? The rewards are priceless...

    Anyway... On to the Jam.

    Where do I start?

1st Fates Warning: Get EVERYTHING from "No Exit" on... You could skip Chasing Time... I have a sneaking suspicion you will eventually own everything from the post Arch era Fates. With that in mind... save some gas money and make one trip for all! I started with APSoG & Parallels. I now have everything (post Arch) including Chasing Time. They all get regular rotation, but APSoG and No Exit get VERY regular play. "The Ivory Gate of Dreams" (No Exit) RoCkS mY wOrLd!

On the topic of DT playing at that Jammer's wedding... I'm there dude!
