I'm happy, my Chroma Key single finally got here. Seems like it would
have been quicker if I drove the 5 miles or so to where it was
manufactured. Anyway, it is the perfect thing for me to listen to right
now. It has this odd combination of Tori/jazz/industrial influences. I
can only say that it's very different, and a refreshing change of
pace. As for the Metalli-suck, I mean, MetalliCA debate, I don't care
enough to join in. Sellout, poser, fake, fraud, are all just terms we
slap on people and things to pigeon hole them away. If you can't get
over the fact that someone sold a few records, sit and rotate. I stick
by the bands I have always liked. In the goth community, its almost a
cardinal sin to like Nine Inch Nails, yet i stand by them. IMO, its the
people that desert the bands when they become popular that are the true
    sellouts. Just my piece.

well shit.. i've been so closed minded all these years man.. i=20 wish you woulda come talked to me earlier cause the beasty boys "license=20 to ill" and "ill communication" sound completely different .. i had no=20 idea they were a progressive band.. i mean.. damn.. "Pretty Fly For a=20 White Guy" sounds nothing like "No Self Esteem".. offspring must be a=20 prog band.. Michael Jackson is progressive too!!!! Pearl Jam, Green Day,=20 Aerosmith, Devo all changed their sound!! they must be=20 progressive!!!!!!!!!!! i've seen the light!!!!

basically you're saying that a band is progressive when each album=20 sounds different.. so by your standards When Dream And Day Unite isn't=20 prog because it's DT's first album and there's nothing before then to=20 compare it to..=20

shut up man.. there are two veins of prog..=20 one being concept type albums (A Pleasant Shade of Gray, The Wake of=20 Magellan, Etc)=20 the other being technically progressive (Awake, Ink Complete, The Divine=20 Wings of Tragedy) many times the both veins overlap..=20

prog is about music that's structured.. getting away from standard=20 verse/chorus 3 chord song... expanding musically.. i&w does that..=20 FII regressed.. the band took there music in a direction that=92s=20 conducive to masses..=20 don't get me wrong.. there's are some definite progressive tunes on FII=20 (lines in the sand, peruvian skies, trial of tears) and i like the album=20 a lot.. it just took a turn away from prog. they didn't "PROGRESS" with the album.. they "CHANGED".. big=20 difference.. not necessarily a bad thing, but to argue that prog means a=20 band changes they way they sound is stupid

    1) The Magic Elf Somebody on the Jam several months ago first mentioned them. Can't remember who it was. Their website bills them as "High-intensity instrumental rock." Basically, they live up to the billing.

    2) Elysion Side-project of Lemur Voice drummer Nathan van de Wouw. I guess the best description I can think of to describe them is: think of LTE, a little less speed, much stronger jazz tendencies, more funk-influenced, some chunkier guitar parts. Ummm, it's a little tough to describe beyond that. You really gotta hear 'em for yourself.

    3) Spastic Ink This is a bit more extreme. Truly crazy-ass shit, but it is instrumental:). Full-blown technical wankery. Awesome. You could probably call this "metal". Not sure what kinda metal, exactly:).

    4) Jonas Hellborg Group Specifically, I'm talking about the CD called "e". It's the only Hellborg CD I have. Definitely more of a "funk" CD than any of the other bands I've mentioned. There are some parts that would have fit in well on the LTE CD, though.

MP3s of stuff from all 3 bands can be found at the moshing doctor's ftp site: total.devastation.com Look under the "/incoming" directory. I didn't upload the hellborg mp3s, so I don't know if they're all from e, or not. I do know that the files called hellborg01 and hellborg02 are.

Anybody got any other suggestions? I'm always looking for more shit like this.

your description makes them sound like a typical metal band. just thought i'd clarify. spastic ink is what i'd call insane prog. time sigs like 15/16 and such. my friends dont like listening to it, because they say it's too wild to be musical. not everyone's thing. i found that spastic ink is the OPPOSITE of technical wankery - they're all gods, but they don't just show off and shred. they use their technical ability to play the insanely fast, incredibly technical music they want to play. yes, it's very fast, but very fast != wanking. in this case i definitely feel it doesn't. feel free to disagree. moo.

I bet it's just me that would prefer to think of him as a genius who was a bit eccentrict... that's my story and I'm sticking to it... ::puts fingers in ears and hums rather loudly::

Something funny about his odd tendency to be controlling and a perfectionist, sort of. Around the time the steadicam was being marketed for the first time, Kubrick received a video demonstrating its use. He sent a letter back to the manufacturer, including a little drawing, explaining that they should develop a new video, as "the shadow quite clearly reveals the design and construction of the product." Something like that... Rather humorous, I always thought...

    >Anyway I had thought that Harvery Keitel had exited the project due to the >reshoots problem as well, but upon further research into things in response >to your letter, I learned that, yes, I was wrong.

Rumor has it that Keitel left because his 'loose' style of acting conflicted with (as previously established, and, yes, I'm still humming) Kubrick's eccentric style of directing... I understand that the reason Jack Nicholson became such fast friends with Kubrick was because he could *manage* to do a hundred takes a day -- he put his all every time into every take (which might explain why Nicholson was the one to accept Kubrick's award from, I think, the AFA, was it?)

    >Maybe he's hoping for another Impromptu singin in >the rain (which I am told malcolm macdowell did not add till around the 42nd >take of that scene in Clockwork though again I could be wrong).

I don't remember if it was Leigh or Cruise or Kidman or someone else that complained (hmm... I bet it was Leigh) about the dialogue coaches working with her for hours on some tiny monologue. I think Corona has a large article about how Kubrick put one of the actresses in tears by having her run a fifteen minute monologue over and over again until it was done to his satisfaction.

Read at Hardradio that Fates Warning won't start recording their new album until December 99. I also saw that ARMORED SAINT has reformed and signed a contract. What is the status of Vera?

POISON, RATT, CINDERELLA, and GREAT WHITE or DOKKEN are all hitting the road together starting late May. Should be cool.

After reading a TON of good reviews on the new NEVERMORE album, I had to pick it up. Everyone everywhere likes this album. I am a big fan of SANCTUARY, but I heard the 'Politics of Ecstacy' and wasn't too impressed Dreaming Neon Black has everything necessary to be a good album, seasoned veteran players that can play, a good image and cover, good production, etc. BUT, after about four or five listens, there is nothing on this album that impresses me. There is not one single song or moment that I have gone back to to listen. The songs are just to progressive or something. The 'clicky' base drum chops up their songs so that it doesn't flow. Dane's vocal melodies aren't catchy enough so their songs just don't flow right or something. Am I the only one who hears this. They have the same problem as ICED EARTH, they are both bands that I want to like, but both are lacking something in their songs to put them into the next level.

Anyways, to make all the music dorks jealous, THEY GOT SIGNED AFTER A THREE SONG DEMO without ever playing a show. Just a sign on how popular the melodic Black/Death metal scene is getting.

There first show is on March 19 opening for MORBID ANGEL in Anaheim. I guess there are also a ton of other bands opening. But if you are in the neighborhood, check it out.

As I've said in private replies I never meant this to reflect badly on the abilities of Stanley Kubrick. I'm a big fan. Just making comments.

By far, my favorite Kubrick story is one I read in an article somewhere. When making the deals with the studio for Eyes Wide Shut two producers visited Kubrick at his home. He was seated upstairs in his room (like Uma Thurman in the early scenes of Pulp Fiction) while the producers would stand downstairs and speak to him through a microphone. He announced to them that they had ten minutes to make their pitch and when they began to speak, if any of them became too long winded he would turn off the microphone, making it very clearly that he was doing so. Great stuff.
