Former singer for alternative rock band Blind Melon, best known for the
"bee girl song" cus no one remembers the actual name.. talked crap about
Dream Theater and overdosed on heroin shortly after. Some jammers
thought he got what was coming. Funny, when he died, I was an
alternative listener, had never even heard of DT. Hell, I don't think I
had even heard of Rush, Yes, or Van Halen. (I was locked in a closet
    until age 16.)

let's not forget the fact that he hasn't done speed since the Justice days!
but seriously, I think he kicked ass on ...And Justice for All. He was
solid, but boring, on the black album, and just plain sucked on L/RL.

Are you kidding??? I'd be willing to bet, that if the draino that I put in his smack didn't do the job....then the other jammers that altered his shit were successful. Fuck the little bitch.

Yes i can tell the difference between Vai and Yngwie. I can tell who is playing by hearing just 2 or 3 notes. (based on setup and rig sound and style) But, this was several years ago before Malmstein went solo with his neo-classical baroque style....and before he broke his hand--before he could play as fast as he can now! I couldn't tell who was in the back ground cause of Vai's enourmous presence. And since he takes all the solos on the album i couldn't ever really hear the backup guitarist. That's why i asked. I knew Yngwie was on No Parole From Rock n' Roll, but wasn't sure if he was on this one cause i lost the case for it.

Well that's my rebuttle indii "you call him Dr. Jones, lady!"

Indeed 4/4 is a sort of 'genetic', that's why it's so easy for people to dig that stuff!!! But again, it has to do with western people, I don't know, probaby it has some historic background, but you can just listen to any non-Western music, like Indian stuff, or African drumming or whatever, and I bet that 4/4 is not common for that music in any way!!! I once played with an Indian percussionist and even though the song was in 4/4 the stuff he played was in 3/4 and he said that it sounded more natural for him. And you'll catch yourself on the thing that if you listen to alot of Indian music in a row you'll start digging those complex rhythms and they'll feel much more natural!!!

He didn't quit Type O to join Life Of Agony, because he was in Life Of Agony all along. As much as I know, he was pushed out of Type O because he was a miserable and depressive dude who couldn't get along with anybody. That was the reason why he got the boot from Life Of Agony two years later as well.

first of all thanx to all of you for making this hoon-stuff clear to me. I know of the story with bling melon and I somehow guessed it was him, yet I wasn't sure.

To this 4/4 time sig. thing: >Most of it's in 4/4 time, a time sig >that's fairly beat into people in the "Western" world and thus is quite easy >to play in, and the beats used in rock are usually simple. duh duh DUH duh

Just that it's in a 4/4 time sig. doesn't mean it has to be simple. Just have a look at some of the DT songs. Even in 4/4 time sig. parts they are more complex than all these shredder bands together. For example: the guitar solo in UAGM is completely in 4/4. Just listen to what MP and JM play there.

WRONG! Unless I'm completely mistaken, I believe the solo to UAGM starts in 11/4, then the big build up thing is in 7/4, *then* goes back to 4/4 *when* the chorus comes back in again... not trying to bitch, just clarifying... ;)

What the hell's a "serious mistake"? Could you be specific? Because if you're going to say "playing any notes that weren't on the record" (which is what the tone of your post implies), I'd suggest you listen to KevMo's "serious mistakesstlg on L@TM, like when he plays those kick-arse extra bits at the start of PMU. >As far as I perceive it DT hardly ever makes mistakes live (except Bullshit! Of course they make mistakes, everyone does. What makes them good is the fact that they don't get thorwn by it. So provide some specific examples about how DS stuffed it up or SHUT UP.

    >Name a drummer in rock music who has had a bigger influence. >Ringo was no technical god, but he was on par with guys like Bonham You just did, fool! John Bonham, RIP. Ringo did diddly-squat compared to JB. And it's interesting, I find: okay, so the Beatles were greater sonic pioneers than Zeppelin, and yet if you put on ANY Zeppelin album, it's aged far better than ANY Beatles album. If someone put "When I'm 64" on the radio, you'd PISS YOURSELF LAUGHING. But if someone put on "Heartbreaker" or "The Rover", or "In the Evening", or....You get the point.

Right, main point. Since I can FINALLY play MP3s on this set-up, I've been running around getting SHITLOADS of DT stuff. I'd forgotten how much I like this band! The Way It Used To Be sounds closer to U2-meets-The Stone Roses than Images and Words - and it's fuckin' ACE! John Squire would be proud of that altro solo. How could that get missed off the record in favour of New Millenium? Same with Raise The Knife? And yet the doesn't-sound-at-all-like-Queen Anna Lee made it. Hmmm...Gawd, Dream Theater's *offcuts* wipe the floor with any other band's albums! Does anyone know who wrote the lyrics to TWIUTB, and have a copy they can send me? And does anyone have a list of places where I can get hold of MORE MP3s? I MUST FEED MY HABIT. It's filling in in the absence of DT / PF '99.

I love episode and visions and have also live in europe, but this one seems filled with old riffs, bad lyrics and awful melodies. (sorry jens). SoS is at least funny, but apart from that... The divine wings is my 2nd s x disc and I like it even better than twilight in olympus. the hooklines are so well done. I was hanging out one summer with someone who was very interested in different types of ethnic music (he was also an awesome guitar player, btw. huge zappa fan). Anyway, he told me that in the west, musicians have deeply explored harmony. In other cultures, however, they have done the same thing with rhythm. Just look at most western classical music -- there is usually only one type of rhythm at a time -- occasionally you'll have a brief 2 against 3 or something, but that is not terribly common. Now look at African (or your other favorite non-western region) music. You'll find that they almost always play incrediably complicated patterns -- 2 against 3 against 5 against 7, and the like. I'm not an expert, but listening I can hear it. The harmonies, however, are usually relatively simple if they are there at all. Just food for thought. -Andy

    I need some recommendations...

I'm looking to build a small mini-studio out of my windoze box. Here's what I currently have:

Windows 98 4-5 gigs hd space SB 16

I'm looking to upgrade the sound card and get some software to do the trick. Any suggestions??? I want to be able to use samples to get my drum beats...as well as have the ability to record using a microphone or line in. Maybe in the future, I'll be looking to include a keyboard controller, but I don't have plans to right now. What kind of sound card is best suited for this. I'm hearing all sorts of wonderful things about the SBLive...is that the one to get??? As for software, I'm lost. I could simply d/l cakewalk express and start playing with that...but is that any good?? Suggestions here???
