Jeff Whittle and Chris Herin (the friendly bassist and guitarist from

5-22-99, at the 7th House in Pontiac.

    Yeah...keep in mind it's got the guitarist from King's X. I bought X's
compilation album which has 2 or 3 songs from each of their albums, and
I felt exactly the same way. I thought they were gonna be all proggy,
but no, they're hard rock, kind of blues-ish almost. But, Ty tabor can
play pretty well, and the songs weren't bad once I adjusted. On the
disc, there's a few live, prev. unreleased tracks, and the last one,
called "Over My Head", is a rockin' tune. I often put it on repeat. I
love that song! But it's the only one, on that disc anyway, that has
that certain kickassedness. If they have any other songs like that one,
    someone please tell me!

Another platypus point: I think that Derek, without the influence of a
whole band that plays prog, left to his own devices to play what he
will, will probably shift back into the hard rock mode that he comes
from. Now he might bring some proggy undertones or whatever with him,
but I just assumed that he would not be playing the LitS type stuff that
he contributed to DT. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    >Can someone say what is that Carpal Tunnel??? Some nus-effect of being
    >computer freak???

It's like arthritis. You get it from using your hands and wrists on a
daily basis. Derek would probably qualify. :)

    >It's like arthritis. You get it from using your hands and wrists on a >daily basis. Derek would probably qualify. :)

It's a little more than arthritis. It can be excruciatingly painful. Some people are more susceptible than others to the adverse affects. Anyone can get it. It's caused by similar repetitive movements with your hands and wrists. Arthritis is generally experienced due to age, but one girl I knew at work had a severe case of CTS (a secretary, go figure) and she was only 22. Typing was a terrible venture for her.

CTS will become more and more popular as the information age wears on unless some sort of "hands-free" input device for computers is unveiled. Mouseclicking and typing all day is terrible work for your wrists. Good preventative tactics are giving your arms and wrist proper support while clicking and typing. A natural keyboard helps a LOT. It gives your hands alot better rest than with common flat keyboards. I was developing a slight case of CTS, so I bought myself one and a nice Intellimouse Pro (the nice raised, curvy one). No more strain. :) It's a serious help for anyone who has been prone to hand cramping and aching wrists. Those are signs of impending CTS. Advanced stages of CTS can only be assauged with therapy and surgery and that still won't keep it from coming back. It's best to stop it before it starts. :)

Basically, what I know of the physical aspects of CTS is that there is a cavity in your wrist between your two wrist bones (shoot me, I can't remember the names, fibia and tibia?, I think those are the leg bones. bah). As more stress is detected in the wrists and hands fluids from God knows where flood that tunnel. When the work is done, the fluid recedes but leaves something of a film behind. Eventually the film builds up into this gunk that is just trapped there until eventually the swelling never goes away and they have to cut into you to clean the shit out. I might be wrong, but that's the way it was explained to me.

Musicians are generally a little more flexible with their movements and aren't as threatened by it as much as computer users, but even so, it's well advised you do warm up exercises with your wrists before playing. And computer users alone aren't the ones at risk. Most of the people I've known who've had it are butchers.

I know I'm not a hell of an expert on this but I've known several people who have had severe stages of it and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Well, except maybe that spandex wearing bitch at work. hehehe.

So remember, exercise that wrist before spanking Mr. Johnson! -- KorgX3 dances the Macarena with his mom.

Sorry to disrupt the 'Jam for private conversation, but...

Adam Pye -- please drop me an E-mail when you get a chance. My last few mails have gotten bounced.

Here's something everybody can feel free to field:

Has anyone out there had any experience with the Denon DRW580 or 585 tapedeck? I'm looking to get one, but would like some 'owner feedback' before doing so.

    Thanks for your time, all.

That's the best example I can come up with to compare SB's "Day for Night" to the Platypus record.

I was looking through the Magna Carta 1998 catalog that I got with my LTE cd, about a year ago, and on the last page, under the entry for "Steinway to Heaven", the one with all the keyboardists, Jordan's name was listed like this: Jordan Rudess (The Dregs, Dream Theater) Now, I know Jordan wasn't in OFB when this was printed, so either its a strange foreshadowing, or someone knew about the Derek/out, Jordan/in switch long before it happened.

If anyone has any comments/insights/speculations I'd love to hear them.

I never tried a Spector bass before. I have a standard Fender Jazz bass and I like it, But my favorite basses are Musicman Stingrays. I would stay away from the peavys though. They are good for beginners and intermediates, but not for professionals. One thing about the Geddy Lee bass is that it does not cost an arm and a leg like most signature instruments. Jordan appeared for 1 live show before the Awake tour: September 9, 1994. Ryan Whitaker has the show and is selling it under the monicker "The Rudess Experiment" on Scarred Records (http://scarred.mit.edu)
