I just happened to be watching the 5Y video, and noticed something in MP's
video stuff of the Awake session that surprised me: Who in DT smokes?
Marlboro Lights, to be exact. I just have trouble believing that somebody
could smoke and be THAT physical in what they do - if I were that type of
musician, it would make me so short of breath.

And I DID (still do, sometimes) smoke. I like it, too bad it's gonna kill
me someday. I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if I weren't a singer.

    Hello fellow Jammers

My name is Eric. I've been lurking on the 'jam for well over a year now, but
this is my first post. I've gained a wealth of info from you guys. Some of
the groups I'm really into because of you guys are Fates Warning , Spock's
Beard and just about everyone signed on Magna Carta.

Anyway, what I'm hoping you can help me with is my search for information on
Crimson Glory. CR reached there height in the late 80's with the release of
'Transcendence'. I still feel it's one of the best prog metal albums ever.
The vocalist, Midnight, can only be touched by JLB and Geoff Tate(IMO!). He
    had such power and range!

CR's final release was 'Strange & Beautiful' in 1991. It had some really
good tracks, but overall was a big disappointment. I heard it was only
recorded to fulfill their record contract obligations. After that the band
    broke up.

The rumors I've heard recently is that they have reformed and there are
plans for a new release later this year. The new reformation, however, does
not include Midnight. The story on Midnight was that he quit music after
their last release and that there were some very hard feeling between him
and some of the other band members. I also read that he was found dead last
year in a Tampa Bay motel. I've never been able to confirm this or find any
    more info.

So, does anyone know anything new about CR and what ever happened to one of
    metal's best vocalists?

Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Eric

    1) Regency. This is a not-well-known band out of the heart of the
Champagne region of France. They play in the best of prog-metal style for
my tastes !! They have two self-titled mini-CDs available but each has
         over
30 minutes of music (the first CD has 4 songs, the second one 3). It may
not be easy to grab in the US, but for any Euro-jammers (esp the French
ones), this is ABSOLUTE MUST BUY. I think that each one is 70 francs.
Rating for the first one is 15/18 and the second (newer) one is 16/18.
Really worth the extra effort to get !!If DT put this material out, you
         would not be disappointed.

By s-mail, you can reach them at:

         Regency
         c/o Charles Monzat

         5110 Reims
         France

         By fax:

By e-mail, you can try the following (no guarantees):

         KEspich@aol.com

    I confirm they're really excellent !
They performed a gig 2 months ago with lots of new tracks and they were really
impressive. Definitely one of the best progressive metal I've heard.
When Mark Metzger says it's an ABSOLUTE MUST BUY, I totally agree.
They opened for Superior in France 2 years ago if I'm not mistaken.
By the way, they are currently looking for a bass player, so if any french people
from the list read that, you may spread the word.

    Hi, folks:

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety
at <http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm>. But here are some excerpts of
    special interest to Ytsejammers!

Coming at various times from Magna Carta <http://www.artist-shop.com/magna>
are Liquid Tension Experiment 2, Tiles/Presents of Mind, Dali's
Dilemma/Manifesto for Futurism and Ice Age/The Great Divide.

Well, let's just cut right to the chase! I know you're all wondering about
LTE 2. Did they continue to live up to their potential? Or did they hit
the dreaded sophomore slump? Well, I've listened to LTE 2 several times
already and I can tell you quite honestly that Mike Portnoy, John Petrucci,
Tony Levin and Jordan Rudess definitely did not hit a slump! In fact, IMHO,
I think the second album is much better than the first! It shows that these
musicians all know each other much better this time around and that much
more forethought and planning went into this album to make it a deeper and
more diverse work. Of course, I don't want to give you the impression that
the boys don't just cut loose with some great jams! There's plenty of that
to satisfy any LTE fan! If this is a preview as to what the next Dream
Theater album will be like, you can bet I'll be the first in line at the
store (what am I saying? I am the store!).

And when you get a chance, be sure to also check out the other three
relatively new progressive metals groups that are making their Magna Carta
debut. Of these three, I have to give a personal nod to Tiles as the leader
    of this pack.

We have a lot of new members to welcome to The Artist Shop and one of those
is The Laser=92s Edge <http://www.artist-shop.com/laser>. This label began=
     in
1990 for the purpose of reissuing rare progressive and psychedelic
recordings of the 70=92s. They immediately acheived recognition for their
faithful releases of classics like The Plastic Cloud, SFF, and Faithful
Breath. Although they still consider their reissue series important, the
primary focus of the label has now shifted to working with new progressive
artists. White Willow, Somnambulist, Volare, A Triggering Myth, and The Hand
Farm are some of the bands they currently feature. Their mission is simple =
    =96
to record and promote the best progressive music available.

Sensory was established in 1997 as a subsidiary label of The Laser=92s Edge.
Its purpose is to spotlight artists who approach the metal genre with an
exploratory and progressive attitude. Complexity and intelligence combined
with extreme power and heaviness are characteristic qualities of the music
these bands create. The Sensory roster of artists presents a broad spectrum
of forward thinking progressive metal. All releases from The Laser=92s Edge
and Sensory feature audiophile mastering from reknowned recording engineer,
    Bob Katz.

One of the latest releases from The Laser's Edge and Sensory is Gordian
Knot. Gordian Knot was conceived as a project to demonstrate Sean Malone's
abilities as both composer and performer. Malone's ground-breaking
performance on Cynic's 1994 release "Focus" brought him worldwide acclaim
for his bass work and his mastery of the 12-string Chapman Stick. On
Gordian Knot he pushes the instrument to its limits - whether he is playing
percussive bass lines, flowing glissandos, or pure shredding leads that
would wither most guitarists. Only musicians of the highest caliber could
perform music of such complexity. Drawing from the genres of progressive
rock and metal, Malone invited an all-star lineup to participate: Trey Gunn
(Warr Guitar) of King Crimson, who co-produced and mixed Gordian Knot with
Sean Malone; Sean Reinert (Drums), Malone's former bandmate from Cynic; Ron
Jarzombek (Guitar) from the bands Watchtower and Spastic Ink; Glenn Snelwar
(Guitar); John Myung (Chapman Stick) of Dream Theater appears as special
    guest on two tracks.

Just released!!! Progression magazine issue No. 30 is now available
    <http://www.artist-shop.com/progress.htm> -- another big issue, with 156
    pages! Contents include the following:

    * Feature interview with keyboardist Jordan Rudess

And lots of other great interviews and reviews!

    On our import pre-order page
    <http://www.artist-shop.com/catalog/imports/preorder.htm> you'll find the
    following forthcoming release:

    PLATYPUS-WHEN PUS COMES TO SHOVE
Japanese edition of 1998 album by prog metal supergroup featuring Ty Tabor
of King's X with Dream Theater members John Myung & Derek Sherinian, and Rod
Morgenstein of Dixie Dregs & Winger. Scheduled to include undisclosed bonus
    tracks.=20

I'm looking for info on great-sounding and performing guitar effects
processors. Key aspects include variety of effects and quality, of course.
    I'm looking to spend $500 to $700. I have a mediocre solid-state amplifier,
and am choosing to gain an array of effects before beefing up the amp setup
    with a half-stack.

I've heard that the Rocktron VoodooValve is a cool unit. Any other
recommedations would be welcome. FYI I love Petrucci's tone, and am very
partial to the standard Ibanez shredder tone.

Feel free to email me privately or perhaps copy the jam considering the
number of guitarists on the list..

    thanks,
    -Neil.

BTW, I played a small covers gig yesterday. Nothing special but it was = great fun, and I blew the bass amp (Fender Bassman 100). I'll upload = some of the stuff when I get home, setlist included Edge Of Darkness, No = Love Lost & Keep On Rotting (Carcass) and the ultra cool song by little = known Jewish hard rock band Jericho (Ethiopia) who did two or maybe = three great albums in the early 70's. CLOCKWORK -- SURFACE TENSION

I went out on a limb and bought this from The Laser's Edge without really knowing anything about this band, other than the sound clip of "If These Walls Could Talk." I was decently impressed by the vocals and the melodic strength of the tune, so I bought the album.

Surface Tension is Clockwork's first full length album, clocking in at just over 54 minutes. They recorded a 25-minute EP a few years ago entitled Search, which I will be searching for soon (pardon the pun!). After a few listens, I can feel pretty safe in saying that this disc will not be leaving my changer for a while. Which is a shame, because in the same order I purchased two other discs, Power of Omens - The Eyes of the Oracle and Rhapsody -- Symphony of Enchanted Lands. It is simply that Clockwork has a genuine creativity that so many other bands lack. Track 6, The Convolution Box, is a perfect example; an 8 minute instrumental weaving its way through a furious opening barrage of crunchy guitars and crashing cymbals before settling down to a relatively peaceful acoustic guitar section. Trying to explain this track, hell, this band, would be very difficult...

But I can try. These guys go for song structure and melody over anything else. This is not to say that they aren't good technicians, cuz they are. One of the guitarists (there are two) gives a nod, concious or not, to Petrucci and does the DT deity's lightning fast ParadigmShiftOpening-like riff. The bassist plays some great accompaniments, and even takes over in the opening section of track number 3, The Guardin' of Eden, a great example of their funky riffs and layered lyrics.

Which brings me to the singer, Douglas Joseph Matthew Gillin. The best I can do is compare him to a more ballsy Ted Leonard of Enchant. This band is nothing like Enchant, don't take that from this review -- just wanted to make the closest comparison to the timbre of Gillin's voice. But he changes too...One part of this disc has Gillin sounding like Charlie Dominici!!! At first I didn't like Gillin that much, but he is QUICKLY growing on me, because he has a definite attitude, and he KNOWS how to sing lyrics according to the meaning of the songs. Great keys too, and the drummer, Anthony Sciamanna, has chops from here to there, but he also knows how to use them. Very tasteful player.

I keep thinking that Clockwork reminds me of Spock's Beard only in that they have the same flair for variety...Going from funky to dramatic to thoughtful at the drop of a hat. The thing is though, that these guys make it work, where so many other bands fail. That is where the similarity to SB ends, because Clockwork has heavy spots, sometimes bringing to mind Superior...These guys can seriously rip through heavy prog sections like DT or Fates. These guys are NOT neo-classical -- Try Symphony X or Rhapsody for that...

If you are looking for an awesome symbiosis of prog metal and prog rock, you might want to give these guys a try. There are some great songs on this disc, not just great playing. I can't wait to hear Clockwork's next contribution.

A question: if you a radio program devoted to playing progressive metal, what would you name it? Right now it's a toss up between "Progressive Measures" and "Progressive Edge", "Brainstorm", yet I'm entirely happy with either.

Names that I do like, but are already taken by either band or another program are 'Braindance', and Gary Carson's Melbourne program, 'Screaming Symphony'.

I've been running through a bunch of words like Cerebral, Rhapsody, Opus, Dimension, Eternity, blah, blah, and other cliched terms, but nothing really seems to gel.

If anyone has any suggestions they could foward me, it would be muchly appreciated.

    Cheerin'

    Luke.

PS. Could Paul Dyer please email me, I don't have your new Uni email address. :)
