Hey guys,
This is so fucking wierd....
]From Sigit :-
>just wandering if any of you guitar players have DT/other prog patches for
>the Zoom 505 pedal (just bought one ...)
>so far I can only found the clean parts of PMU
And the subject of my next Jam Mail was to be "JP Sounds using a
Zoom 505". Well there you are - beat me to it. If anyone has any input on
this, drop me a line as well, thanks. I enjoyed the interval stuff that was
floating around, I play guitar and (mainly) drums, but I've never had any
formal music training, I play what sounds good to me, it's fun to put names
to musical structures.
The dream stuff was cool too, the thing I tend to do is lay in bed,
just dropping off to sleep and WHAM that really cool base line that would
fit perfectly with that riff I'm working on will enter my head. Or the
chord structure for that chorus I was searching for. Unfortunately I'm
usually warm and snug by that time and though my brain is screaming GET THE
FUCK UP AND GRAB YOUR GUITAR...YOUR GONNA LOOSE IT, YOU KNOW IT...ITS
SEEPING AWAY, my body is saying things like warm, snug, comfy, fluffy,
bunny...shutdown. I hate that.

This was one of those trips to fill in some gaps in certain collections.
Opting for 2 jazz and 1 rock this time:
1) Yellowjackets - From GRP's Pricesless Jazz Collection, this is a
compilation of songs from these scary maestros, circa late 80's - early
90's. Opening track just blew my dick clean off! Then the drummer comes
along and just parabodiddlyflambees it into a puree :) Doesn't matter
what these guys put out, I buy it...
2) The Rippingtons - Welcome To The St. James Club - more of the good
crossover shiz from the folks at GRP, this one from 1990. Vinnie
Colaiuta makes an appearance on a few songs.
3) Kansas - King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents - a live recording on
Valentine's Day in 1989 at the Tower Theater in Philly, this was when
Steve Morse was with the band. Some cool stuff on this one, highly
recommended for Kansas/Morse fans. It opens with the grandeur of 'Magnum
Opus'.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For those who don't know, the King Biscuit Flower Hour has been part of
the music scene since it debuted in '73. I was 12 then, so it didn't
take much to hook me :) This turned out to be so much more than a hook
though.
It was a place where many unknown bands debuted and known acts could
hype an upcoming tour. It aired on the radio once a week and any style
was fair game (Zappa, Black Sabbath, Rennaisance, America, Gentle Giant,
Motorhead, for examples). The only given was that you knew when you
turned the radio on, it was live gig that you'd be hearing.
The concept was that one could experience a band live in their home. As
close as you could get to being there. Neat idea for its time,
considering all the 'WAAAAAAA! how come such and such never tours in my
town?' (still heard today). For an hour a week, this was the pacifier :)
I always tried to make time for it each week, as I couldn't always
afford to go see a band live. Believe me I saw a buttload (hundreds) of
bands live growing up. This was just another way to get more, More,
MORE!! And this was free.
</memory lane>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DTC: I'll pick up Platypus next paycheck :)

Jon

there was no one

Sorry if you get this twice.. I sent it out early this morning but it never
seems to have arrived.
Well folks, the "metal militia alliance" tour has begun, and it's
first stop was my home here in Houston, Texas. To hear the bands part of it
speak, it's the first true all metal US tour in years.. perhaps they're
right. On to the music:
Destiny's End:
I was completely unfamiliar with this band going in, but they tore the place
up. They're really nothing more than your average power metal band, but they
sounded great live, and the energy of their performance was enough to get
everyone's blood flowin. The highlight of the band for me was their vocalist
(who was obviously heavily Dickinson influenced) who pulled off the high
vocals, while still maintaining the full power of his voice. Quite
refreshing compared to some of the other vocalists out there.
Nevermore:
I had only heard one Nevermore song prior to tonight (actually, last night)
and I wasn't all that impressed... and I'm still not. I hear a lot of talk
about them here on the jam , but they're just not my type of music. As for
their performance, I suppose they play well for what they do. They had a
really muddy mix where the notes tended to get lost amongst eachother, and
(and I know this sounds like sacriledge for a metal concert) they were too
fucking loud. It was almost one of those, "our shit's not that great so
we're just gonna turn it up to high volume and it won't matter" kinda
things. Ah well, they do have a good vocalist, I'll give em that. My friends
swore up and down that the bassist was drunk and missing notes right and
left, but I didn't notice *shrug*.
Iced Earth:
Finally the time came for the main event. Let me say this, whether you're a
fan of Nevermore or even Destiny's End, don't fool yourselves: Iced Earth
are the stars of this tour and in their performance they showed why. They
were definitely the most professional band of the evening: they didn't drink
on stage (as just about all the other bands did) and they were very
meticulous with their mix: which came out perfectly to suit their heavy,
fast, riff based sound. They kicked off with Burning Times off their new cd
"Something Wicked This Way Comes" and (just as on every other song in their
show) the band sounded tighter than Jerry Falwell's ass (as in Jerry Falwell
is a tight ass, not Jerry Falwell has a good looking ass!) and as clean as
any live DT performance I've heard (though granted the music is a bit less
difficult.. but still skillful in its own right). They rolled through their
set playing Melancholy (during which the crowd joined in on vocals, much to
lead vocalist Matt Barlow's surprise (I really don't think the band expected
this tour to attract many fans already familiar with them) and the Wicked
Trilogy (imo their best musical composition ever) from the new album, A
Question of Heaven and I Died For You from the Dark Saga, Angel's Holocaust
from Stormrider, and other assorted tracks including a cover of Black
Sabbath's Electric Funeral. Matt Barlow's vocals were amazing, he hit every
note dead on including the higher end singing from the older stuff. Overall:
Iced Earth played the most varied, professional, musical, and downright
kickass set of the night. If this tour rolls through your town, don't miss
it, they put on a great show.
Interesting side note: While my friends were getting Jon Schaffer to sign
their cd's (lucky bastards... they got the set list too) I asked Jon about a
possible Iced Earth/Blind Guardian US tour. He said they were working on
it... was he just bullshitting me? I guess we'll find out (but damn that
would kick ass).
Forgive me for the poor quality of this review, it's early and I'm still
recovering from the show. METAL IS ALIVE! THIS SHOW WILL MAKE YOU A BELIEVER!

GIANT ELECTRIC PEA

SPV 085-31362 CD
Running time: 58:38
THRESHOLD line-up:
Karl Groom (guitar, backing vocals) - Richard West (keyboards,
orchestration and backing vocals) - Jon Jeary (bass and backing
vocals) - Nick Midson (guitar) - Andrew McDermott (vocals) - Mark
Heaney (drums)
Songs:
"Freaks" (5.22) - "Angels" (6.42) - "The Latent Gene" (8.00) -
"Lovelorn" (5.42) - "Change" (4.33) - "Life's Too Good" (5.27) -
"Goodbye Mother Earth" (7.57) - "Voyager II" (9.04) - "Sunrise On
Mars" (5.50)
Wow! Right from the very first song "Freaks" it's obvious that
this album is something special. The opening track as well as the
whole CD deals with the subject of cloning. The lyrics are saying;
"Yes we will create some freaks!". And I think they are right.
It's better to let the nature have it's own ways. The heavy guitar
riffs are better then ever, and the new singer Andrew McDermott is
better than both their previous singers Damian Wilson and Glynn
Morgan are. They were great singers too, but Andrew's voice is
very powerful and he's a perfect replacement! I just hope that he
will stay in the band forever.
It's hard to tell which album is the best, their debut album
"Wounded Land" (1993) or "Clone". Maybe you shouldn't compare them
to each other, as they are very different in style. "Wounded Land"
was very pompous and closer to progressive rock where "Clone" is
more heavy Prog Metal. The production though is much better on
"Clone". The album has got a very clear and crisp sound, which I
think is necessary, especially when it comes to Prog Metal. Prog
Metal has to be very powerful, and a good production is therefor a
need. As always, Threshold are not forgetting the strong melodies
and great arrangements that sets them apart from many other
over-technical progressive metal bands.
The music on this CD is somewhere between Black Sabbath, Deep
Purple, Dream Theater, Genesis, Metallica, Pink Floyd,
Queensryche, Shadow Gallery, Spock's Beard and Yes. The musicians
are as always very talented. This is one of those CD's that you
can't name any favourites on, as the whole album is just
excellent! "Goodbye Mother Earth" and "Voyager II" though are
really excellent tracks.
I can't say anything else but: Buy this CD if you're into
Symphonic Progressive Metal, and I assure you that you will enjoy
it. Threshold is Prog Metal at its best, and with this release I
think they deserves the same attention as Dream Theater. This is
one of the best Prog Metal releases for 1998. Highly recommended!

Hi all,
I recently got Spock's Beard's Day for night, and yes it *does* kick ass, but for the first few minutes of the first song, I get these very irritating clicking noises, about 1/4 of a second apart -- kind of what you get when you rip audio off a CD using a CD-ROM drive that can't rip very well. You know what I mean. I hope.
This only happens on my stereo, but not on my discman. So the question is: Is the disc faulty, but my discman doesn't pick up the errors? Or is my Sony CD player just absolute crap? Has anybody else had this problem, with this or other CDs?
Cheers,
--David.
