    Hello again,

A co-worker of mine (who unfortunately isn't into prog because of the
vocals) is a drum-nut (he plays a bit of drums, and REALLY looks for the
drumming in music). I've been telling him about how Portnoy FUCKING
RULES, and how his drum setup is a damn awesome monster-rig.

What I'm looking for is some very good pics of MP's rig, in all it's
unholy glory! I've found some decent pics on UACM, but it would really
kick ass if I could find some that aren't in-concert pics (they're
decent pictures, but are really hard to make out since it's so dark).

If anybody could point me in the proper direction, I would forever be in
your debt. (well, not really...... but it would be awfully nice of
    you!)

OH, and BTW..... Even though I said my coworker hates the "high-pitched
girly progressive singers", I did drag him out to go see Tiles and
Spock's Beard (the dude I was SUPPOSED to go with was sick, so I just
gave the ticket to this kid for free). He did really dig Tiles (mainly
due to Pat DeLeon's ass-kickin' drumming!). He thought Spock's Beard
"has a little too much keys for my taste", but appreciated their talent.
Anyways, he actually liked Tiles enough to want to go to their CD
    release party/concert that's upcoming!

    Thanks,

OK, so I don't post for quite a while, and then first one is off topic. This
is one of the last great bastions of vibrato/tremolo (pick either the
correct one or the one the marketing guys misused.) users on the interent -
at least that I know of - so I thought I'd throw it out here.

I'm looking at getting the newly - released "EVH" Drop-D tuner for a couple
of my Floyd Rose guitars. I know I have to add a stabilizer to use this, so
I was wondering if anyone out there has experience with either the Hipshot
Trem-Setter or the WD Tremolo Stabilizer? Or will I have to resort to
    blocking?

(BTW, you local types could come and see us with Iced Earth and Destiny's
End at Jaxx on June 3rd.)

The song you heard was 'Prime Mover' from the album 'Hold Your Fire' ... some of Rush's excellent 80's writing. If you like their intricate 80's material like this, you should also check out their album 'Power Windows'... after that you should buy all of their other albums and listen to them all of the time. :)

After having listened to PMU on OiaLT about 100 times messing with the sounds... All I can make out is that whatever he says, it sure gets the fans stirred up... You can really hear 'em screaming!!! Now, I may be wrong on this one, but I'm thinking that whatever he says there is in French... One, the fact that it is a French audience, and their reaction is profound... Two, I can hear whatever he says there pretty well, but, I can't make out any words... NOTE: Don't bother trying to hear this on your "cheap immitation Walkman." And three, of the all the band members on DT, LaBrie is the likeliest candidate to speak French... Being from Canada and all... Of course then again, he might not know a single French phrase, hell, I really have no idea...

Ozric Tentacles will be playing July 13th in Atlanta at the Variety Playhouse; tickets should be $15. This information courtesy Steve Harris from the venue (he owns Windstorm Entertainment locally) and is confirmed.

Additional dates for other parts of the country are leaking out on the Ozrics list, and Ticketmaster lists some of the new dates on their site.....right along with the old postponed dates for May. :)

It's almost 5 in the morning, and I've had a lot of fun tonite (nudge, nudge), so please bear with me... I was discussing music and stuff with the singer in my band tonite, and I wanted to get some of y'all's opinions on some of the stuff we talked about. One of the main things is, where are the bands like us? We both really got into music when Metallica's black album came out, and Nirvana's Nevermind, Pearl Jam's Ten, etc. I remember hearing about STP opening for Megadeth back in 8th grade (befoer plush got huge). These kinds of bands are our main influences. We both love all of these albums (altho subsequent albums come into question). Our music draws from all of these places, including bands like DT, Rush, Smashing Pumpkins, AIC, and other, more misc. influences. I have not heard a single other band that has these sorts of influences. The big "rock bands" now like matchbox 20, etc, just suck, and I don't know where they came from. Bands like Korn, Incubus, and the others came from Faith No More and rap, which is a far cry from the stuff my band does (altho FNM rocks nads!). So where aer the bands with the same basic influences as us? Are we supposed to lead the next wave of rock? Have we hit upon a sound that is mostly untouched? I've heard very few bands with the power and crunch yet main-streaminess that we have. Maybe we're just in the wrong place, 'cause austin is a big roots rock/blues town, but still, we should at least find one or two other bands like us, seeing as how mainstream most of our influences are. what do you guys think?

jeez, it's quite a ways after five now, and I think I'm gettimg more incoherent. I hope everyone gets the gist of what I'm trying to say, and I can get some good feedback about this stuff. oh, yeah, if you wanna learn more about my band, go to www.room213.com, altho it's kinda outdated, 'cause I haven't updated it in ahwhile.

ps- about VH1 RockShow - it's kinda weird when you see "One" on VH1 (and Iron Man, and Subdivisions, and Whole Lotta Love...)

I saw two very cool videos by him on MTV, extreme and very rough techno = stuff. One of the songs, "Come to Daddy", sounded kinda like black metal = with breakbeats and no guitars or something. Very avantgarde, I guess, = definitely cool. But when I got the "Richard D. James" album (which was done before these = singles) it was nothing like it. I read an article about him and = apparently his trademark is programming more or less random drum beats = on top of ordinary melodies and that description certainly fits this = very odd album. But the songs I heard earlier were REAL, extreme songs = and I'd love to hear more recent releases by him which are in that vein, = if there are any. Any info would be appreaciated.

BTW: Didn't Aphex Twin do something with the divine Devin Townsend or is = my memory failing me completely? He DID do a remix on NIN's "Further = Down the Spiral"....

It isn't like saying that AT ALL. You're absolutely, totally, inevitably, possibly irrevokably overlooking the fact that we're talking about some mixed products here, such as finished albums. The guitarist adjusts his tone on his rig (you won't find any reverb buttons on your stereo, now will you? or chorusing? maybe flanger? etc), the drummer tells the engineer how he wants the drums to sound, as is the case with the bassist,= flutist, sax player, pianist, etc. Then, the engineer/producer sits there at the console, works his ass off to make all that gem=FCse sound like something he didn't mix up in his toilet. That's where the "don't fiddle with your EQ, the sound engineer did it for you" part comes in.

Imagine sitting in an =E0 la carte restaurant and ordering the most expensive and elitist dish they have. The chief cook himself works like a dog for three hours, does about everything he can to make all those ingredients work together well, he wants them to taste like food, not a bunch of exotic spices, mixed clumsily together. So, he finishes up the job and serves proudly himself, as to see the customer's reaction. So you,= being the customer, politely thank him, say how much you appreciate all the extra miles he went, and subsequently drown the chef d'oeuvre in ketchup.

    Ketchup. EQ. Ketchup. EQ.

Is it a matter of taste? No, there's no such thing. There's only a matter of having taste and not having it. Cut + dry.

And then, there's that thing with getting older and getting to know things. I know I did. Not too long ago.
