First off... When I think of EQs, I think of an independent unit connected via
an external processing loop or tape loop. Most of those are bad enough, but
built in EQs???? Im speechless... I guess if it sounds better to you, that's
great. I can't think of any way to sugar coat this, so I won't.

You can get by for far less than $10,000.00 if you're willing to settle
for mid-fi. Mid-fi is still leaps and bounds above consumer audio.
I just HATE to see people waste $1,000.00 on junk. Even with a modest
budget for gear, WHAT you select at any price level is the key.
For instance: You could spend $1,000.00 on a Pioneer receiver and Cerwin
Vega speakers, Or, you could spend the same $1,000.00 on a Rotel receiver
and a small pair of B&W speakers. The Pioneer/Cerwin setup wouldn't stand
a chance against the Rotel/B&W setup. Now you've entered the mid-fi world
at the same price as some VERY POPULAR consumer grade gear.

I don't see this list as a collective body of "background music" listeners.

Actually, that one took some time... My New Yorker has a nice setup that
took months of hit-and-mis speaker and speaker placement games before
I had it dialed in. Now that I've bought a conversion van, the fun starts all
over again. My bass cabinets will work fine, as will the amps and head units.
(Yes, I said units. My CD drive is a separate Phillips single CD drive that
connects to the head unit via a CDP loop)

The speakers may be the issue in the new environment. I know for sure that
I'll need to modify the dash cover to accommodate my AR drivers and get
the proper angles. I'm going to make cabinets for the rear main speakers.
Fortunately, I know how the cabinets need to be built, placement will be the
tricky part. Sometimes it sucks being this anal... But there is a payoff.

I'm not trying to slam peoples gear, I'd at least like to get them to try
practicing proper listening techniques so they can extract the best possible
sound from the equipment they already have. And if this persuades them
to upgrade to the next plateau, GOOD FOR THEM!

I've done that! I had a pair of Koss electrostatic phones wired directly to the output of a Blaupunkt amp via the ESP headphone interface. What a trip! But WAY too heavy. I'm not a huge fan of headphones, they are no where near as involving as a good pair of speakers in the right room. The sound stage is too narrow and I miss the organ massaging low end... :)

Oh yeah! The Spock's Beard show in Minneapolis was fantastic.

    Speaking of organ massaging...

I'm going with Ptacek on this one.

The Spock's Beard show last Sat. night in Chicago, besides being very well-attended, much to everyone's delight, was

THE END OF MUSICAL LIFE ON EARTH AS WE KNOW IT.

this coming from someone who has seen a fair number of shows (100?) in his humble lifetime.

I'm predicting total global domination by the Beard on or about 12:24 p.m. this Thursday, or in the next five years - I'm usually really unaccurate with these kinds of things...

    Guys,

Believe it or not, I think I heard Rush on the radio. I was quite disappointed about this, because I really liked the song, and I'm not really a Rush fan. Alright, in fact, I really dislike Rush. But anyway, this song was really cool, and I think he said it was Rush. The lyrics included stuff like "Alternating currents...blah blah" and: "From the point of conception to the moment of truth Someone please tell me that this isn't Rush so I can go back to not liking them. Or if it is, what song is it and what album.

Neil wasn't an original member was he? I thought he replaced the original drummer after the 2nd album. Either/or, it's about time they get officially recognized one way or another. That's Prime Mover from the album Hold Your Fire. Hey, I used to not be a great Rush addict until I picked up that album. IMO, one of their best. Pick it up, the whole album is as good as and better than that song (although I >love< the bassline in that song the most).

Jeez, I hear Rush on the radio all the time. As backwater as the place I live is, there's alot of Rush sympathizers over here. :) -- KorgX3 squirts venom at AL. Oops, that's not venom... NP: Iron Maiden - 7th Son...

I was just asking because I know there are several people here in this list that enjoy Tori's music as much as I do. That doesn't mean I didn't asked over there too.

http://www.ambrosiaweb.com/ambrosia/multimed.htm has some samples. Bear in mind most of this stuff is at least 15-20 years old, so don't expect anything like MP3 sound quality. But if you can get past that, you might find some interesting sights/sounds.

"Nice, Nice, Very Nice" (http://ambrosiaweb.com/rafiles/nn.ram) was the first tune of theirs I'd ever heard. You know when a "package 'o sound" hits you for the first time and you're never quite the same? This shit just came out of nowhere. This song hooked me quite easily at the age of 14 and yet I still hear a lot of this kind of theme being constructed in some of the newer so-called trailblazing prog.

Starts out in a happy feely 70's kind of a middle-of-the-road cotton undergarment major chord thing :), cool drums, classic organ type sound. The instrumental breaks that occur in between ain't that bad considering it's older than many jammers on here. I kinda wish the band had taken their sound more in this direction, but they never lost my respect as a fan for what they DID create. Oh yeah, Ambrosia formed in '71 and released this on their first album in '75.

They're mostly "pop" but in this band keyboards can be heard up-front driving the melody, the drummer also plays bassoon, there's multiple linkage to Alan Parsons, the bass player has played with Keneally, and the lyrics to the above song were co-written by Kurt Vonnegut. These may be enough to qualify it for 'prog' status. Progressive pop-rock, yeah that's it. Comments concerning 'pop' are, as usual, always welcome. Simply place your lips against my ass and speak clearly into the 'microphone' :)

When I hear "Time Waits For No One", Spock's Beard comes to mind. They both have some of the same influences, and very similar arranging styles, bouncing back and forth between that accessible groove-driven hook and prog elements. http://www.ambrosiamusic.com/tourdates.htm has them mostly in California but no surprise there as they grew up in SoCal. :) They're playing some shows in other states as well.

Due to my age, I have four (4) tickets for sale to Adrian Belew's show at the New Market Cabaret in Philadelphia, PA on Friday, June 11th. It wasn't until after I'd ordered them that I learned that the show is strictly 21+, and TicketMaster, being a bunch of money-crazed bastards, refused to void the order. I'm looking to sell them at cost, just to make back the dough I dropped on them: $28.50 a piece or $114 for the whole lot.

Adrian Belew, if anyone's not familiar with him, is a longtime member of King Crimson (guitar/vocals). He's also played with many other famous bands/artists, including Frank Zappa and David Bowie. This current solo tour is labled as "acoustic/electric", which I'd assume means one set of him on an acoustic, and a second set of him plugged in with a band. For more information check:

    http://www.murple.com/adrianbelew/

If anyone would be interested in going to what looks to be a kickass show, and, in so doing, helping me out of a jam, please write me ASAP at hender@wam.umd.edu. Mind the 21+ thing though.

    Thanks, Brian

Here's another one that I just remembered. Eric Johnson's "Cliffs of Dover". At the very start of the song when it's just Eric playing the intro, you can tell that guitar cabinet was miked near the drum kit. You can actually hear the snare drum shaking. Pretty cool.
