I'm not sure how many songs are like this, but on The
Doors' first album, "The Crystal Ship" features a
kinda spooky piano. Also, Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter"
contains a similar spooky piano (seek out live
versions from '73 if possible) interludes, plus a cool
guitar/drum/piano jam. I know this isn't exactly what
you asked for, but you might like it if you haven't
    already heard it.

I agree with your position here, but only because I don't think it's
the artists' fault (for the most part), because it's not about the
music. Let's be honest: if "pop music" was about the music, we
wouldn't be having this conversation, because DT clearly has the
music thing down. What it's *really* about is marketing. The music
is simply the fuel. That fuel gets them on the radio, which gets
them on TV, which sells out tours, which allows the powers-that-be
to sell everything form T-shirts to watches to whatever. They target
these sales at a very vulnerable demographic: teens and pre-teens.
These are the kids that desperately want to be accepted, and
buying all this crap gets them accepted. That's why these pop
stars have such short "lifespans"; once the kids have bought all the
stuff, the only way to make more money is to create/select a new
cool artist to put on the stuff. And thus the cycle continues.

I don't expect this to change; heck, it's been around longer than I
have. I was watching the Behind The Music episode on David
Cassidy today, and the whole scenario I just described happened
to him 25+ years ago. But just because I accept it doesn't mean I
    have to like it.

And knowing that my kid is going to be in that target demographic
in a few years makes me even *less* happy about it.

    Hey everyone,

I just wanted to cover the basses by emailing the Jam as well.

My band, Frontiers, which is a Journey Tribute band, needs a new
drummer. We're based out of New York City and we pretty much intend on
    playing the entire catalog.

If you're at all interested, please email me at fmb@frontierlogic.com

I'm their webmistress, so I got my Power of Omens t-shirt for
free..hehe..but you can e-mail Dave (PwrOfOmens@aol.com) and ask him for
one, I think they cost somewhere around $12 or $15..he'll ship one out to

Of related interest, they have started writing the new cd, and Dave
describes it as "intense"..should be another good one!!

I have been reading with interest everyone's comments on the selling out
thread. I would have to agree that it's very hard to succesfully force DT
upon people. I have converted one friend to DT, out of about 3 or 4
attempts, and I wouldn't say that he didn't already have a head start - he
was into Vai. I was converted to DT by a friend who just gave me some
tapes and left me with them. I discovered them about 6 months later.

I can accept everyone's statements about how and why they still like
mainstream music, but I still find it hard to listen to straight out
mainstream. I do like Dire Straits, and Days of the New. Does anyone else
here share these tastes? I guess it's hard for anything to really stack up
against DT, since I've been listening to them for about 5 or 6 years
    now...

<Ya know, reading this statement, I just realized that
few people realize how good a singer JLB is. I've
never heard anyone ever really talk about it, but he
    really is.>
I would agree with this statement in general. Definitely on the studio
albums his voice is terrific. However, I think that his voice gets a
little weak when it gets a good workout on tour. I'm sure everyone's
noticed him straining a little on OIALT. Also, I didn't like some of his
singing on LATM, as someone mentioned a while ago, the screaming puts me
off. I think that his best live singing is on the live tracks on ACoS... I
often find that JLB's style of vocals is one of the things that my friends
don't like about DT, and I remember questioning his style myself when I
    first heard DT.

Now, on the topic of the world tour that is supposed to happen after the
release of the new albulm. Can anyone please tell me the unlikely good
news that the definition of "world" includes Australia?

    Keep on jammin'

First off... Don't place anything on top of it, or near any of the vents.
I wouldn't recommend fan cooling it either, the electronics may have some
objections to the inevitable dust accumulation. Plus, the dust can act like a
blanket and hinder cooling even more. It sounds to me like the amp can't
deal with the low impedance of two speaker pairs. Try disconnecting one
pair, then crank on it for awhile, see if the problem disappears.

Let me know how that suggestion pans out. If it's impedance related, I
may have some ideas to remedy that condition. I will need more info on
your receiver and speakers before I can be of any real help.

Most of them do, but plenty of them really are mind-controlled by MTV, the radio, and popularity. These are the people that will buy a CD and only listen to the 1, 2, or 3 singles from the album, while they skip past the other songs. My brother was flipping through the TV and there was a concert on MTV. I don't remember who was playing, but they were playing one of their singles, and he kept it on. When the song ended, the band went to the next song and my brother said "I never heard this song. It must not be good." and he changed the channel. Somebody asked last jam about bands with dark piano music. My suggestion is to try some Saviour Machine, particularly their album Saviour Machine II, or Live in Deutschland. SM II is more piano based than the other albums, though there is a lot of piano in the others, too. The live album has a decent sample of songs from the first two. Legend and Legend II have a good mix of piano and guitar, though aren't quite as easily accessible as SM and SM II. Anyway, that's my suggestion.

YES! That's what I was getting at. You articulated that a hell of a lot better than I did. It's really sick that someone would do that, but it does happen. A lot of preppy kids at my school do that.

Okay, here comes a tangent. The band Sugar Ray play Metal-Lite, but all of their radio songs are softer songs, geared for the pre-pubescent female fourteen year old in all of us. I wonder if Sugar Ray concert goers are put off by what constitutes (I would think) 90% of the band's catalog of music.

    Hi,

I currently live in Houston but I am originally from Nederland. Finally, someone else who listens to DT from my home area. What other bands are you into?

I've bee listening to DT since '92. I have several friends in the Golden Triangle that share my musical taste.

I agree that DT need to play Houston on the next tour. Last year, DT was going to play at the Aerial Theater but the show was never scheduled due to the Aerial believing it would not sell enough tickets.... what a crock!

My friend and I drove to Ft. Worth and San Antonio to see the shows. We also went to New York in 95 and 96 to see the "Holiday" shows since there was no tour at that time.

I usually come home on the weekends so we could hook up sometime if you'd like.

Hope to hear from you soon, Pete Davis

Why do people actually take some of their time to comment on the the "selling out" threads? It's a thread that appears on music mailing lists in a cyclic fashion, *especially* when some album/video/DVD/whatever is going to get released.

And no matter how much times it appear (Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Dream Theater -- any band), the arguments are almost always the same.

Just stay subscribed for a while in a music mailing list. You'll see the same arguments over and over.

    []s, Roger...

P.S.: The outline is almost always like this: part of the fans will say that the band has "matured", trying to expose evidences for why they think that way, and part of the fans will argue that the band is now more commercially oriented, leaving the "old, true, loyal fans, those who supported the band since their beginnings" nothing but the older albums.

If you like the band, just continue to listen to it, and ignore the other fans opinions... You'll be happier. And the Internet will be faster.

Oooh. I second that wholeheartedly. Another bunch of dark piano type of stuff I like to listen to is fellow jammer (I think he still reads this) Andrew Miller's Subtlerage stuff. Do yourself a favor and go to http://www.subtlerage.com/ and order Vicious Cycle. if you like that, get his First Impressions CD, too. :) Great shit. Mostly instrumental, but a couple of vocal tracks. Actually, the title track to Vicious Cycle is almost 33 minutes long and is a damn great mix of instumental vocal parts. It's almost all keyboard driven, but there are a couple of tracks with guitar on his stuff. :) Love it. Just listened to it today .:)

More dark piano stuff I like is Type O Negative's October Rust album. I wouldn't really call any of Savatage's stuff "dark piano" but they have some really damn good piano driven songs. It seems like almost all of their stuff is written in a major key for that optimistic attitude.

One of these days, I'll get off of my ass and write some solid stuff instead of constantly noodling looking for that perfect song. Basically, no one I know likes to sit and listen to me play. They suggest I go work for a mortuary playing dirges and shit all day. :) Ah, well. I'm damn good at it! :) I can never get enough minor and diminished chords into my stuff. :P It's really sad. Anyway....

I think I'll go noodle a bit. -- KorgX3 showers himself with Carb Cleaner. Ooooh. NP: Schubert - Serenade (on classical guitar)
