    Hey all...

Since I know some of you are techies at heart... I
was wanting to know why a 'logo.sys' file isn't
working properly when placed in the windows folder??
It's a Dream Theater startup screen and I'm having
trouble getting my system to use it....

    I'm thinking that I haven't killed the right win98
file so that it's recognized or I haven't placed it in
    the right folder.

    any ideas???

Please respond by private email to:
    <appoggiatura@hotmail.com>
Don't wish to clutter the jam any more than I have
    already.

    thanks

Uh, well, here is where our opinions differ a lot. After say five listens=
    , FII
grew rapidly on me, and is now right there beside all the others...Well, =
    maybe
not all the others, SFaM has taken the lead, but then, yep, all of them. =
    Just
the same thing happened to me with WDADU. The first album I heard in a wh=
    ole
(and also the one that the first track was off, PMU) was I&W. It hit me h=
    ard,
immediately. Then I went on to Awake, which took a little longer, since I
wasn't that much into the heavier sound at the time (don't get me wrong, =
    there
are heavy parts in I&W, but the overall sound is heavier in Awake, IMHO).=
     It
was then when I got WDADU, and because of poor production and Charlie's v=
    oice,
it took a longer while, but now I've gotten used to Domi, and since liste=
    ning
to a lot older recordings, sounds are not that bad anymore either.

Wow, that went a lot sideways, so back to what you were writing. NM was a
tricky one, stick was a mystery to me, I didn't know if I liked it or not=
    , but
now, I rank NM (with that stick sound) high up there with PS, LiTS, ToT, =
    JLMB,
HK and TAMP. I guess there are no weak tracks on FII to me, but I guess I=
     could
live without YNM, but not the rest :) (it isn't bad either...)

Actually, it wasn't, you're forgetting that Awake publishing concert (Liv=

the Foundation Forum ???) where JR covered for KM who chose not play in t=
    he
    band after recordings...

Well, of course I wouldn't say that's alot of playing together, but they =
    asked
JR to hop in the band even back then, so I guess they felt the chemistry =
    all
    right.

I've just bought O:M and I absolutely love it.

I have a problem, though. I donno who is who in QR?
I know that Tate is the vocalist, etc, but I dont know who is who on the

And the story is not yet clear.

Any help on either the who's who or on the story would be very cool.

    RE LTE:
If it's any kind of acolade: in almost all the HMVs I've been into, LTE has
its own section in the "rock & pop" bit, with both albums. DT, meanwhile, is
relegated to the metal section :(

    RE "That" boot:
I was having a look a boot site, and the cover to "Skyway of Nightmares"
caught my eye. That's a very cool front cover! Does anyone have a nice
large-ish JPG of it, or any idea where the pic is from?

    >sometimes, I REALLY want to hear Another World, since it's probably >my
    >favorite song from ACOS (why don't they EVER do that one live?)
Yeah, mine too. I suspect that its absencwe from the live shows may have
something to do with it being written largely by Derek, (I seem to remember
    - can someone confirm or deny this?)

    >I could agree on the ACOS production, but totally not for I 1 W. I am not a
    >sound engineer, but sounds really well IMHO.
Well, I am; and I think it sounds great too. I suspect the poster actually
meant WD&DU but got it wrong. That album WAS terribly produced.

    >something? I thought that of all the albums, Myung was easiest to
    >hear in SFaM. He's clearly audible all through Through Her Eyes,
    >he has that funky riff in Home (NP), he's all over the album.
I think the point is that you tend to FEEL the bass rather than hear it. it
is there; I just bought a MUCH better sterio system (plus it's running
through my rack, yay, so I can do some great fine tuning...Oh no...I'm
sorry...No, Al! Put that carving knife down! Please!) and it's a lot
clearer. But by-and-large, it was much easier to hear JM in the mix on FII
than normal. I mean, the guy just ISN'T THERE on OIaL (I mean, half of ACOS
was live too, and the mix there was perfect, what went wrong with the other
live albums? Conspiracy, says I!) - although, if I had a bass tone as bad as
on that album, I'd want it hidden too.

Also, does anyone have a GOOD up-to-date photo of JP and JM's racks? There's
plenty of old JP ones, but none that are remotely UTD, and none of JM.

Finally, for those who have the JP instructional video (can't remember the
name, but there's only the one):
    1) How helpful are the lessons?
    2) what else do you get apart from technique advice?

    Si

Personally, I've found that if I can remember a lot of an album after
listening to it just 2 or 3 times then I tend to get bored with it very
quickly. This (among other reasons) is why I stopped listening to a lot of
80's metal. Now, this doesn't meant that I definitely will like an album if I
don't remember it, but at least i'm probably not going to be bored with it.
So, that much is good. Also, this doesn't mean that you will like the album
after giving it a few more spins. I'm just saying don't give up on it yet.
Personally, I've found that the albums I end up enjoying most are ones where
after 2 or 3 listens I don't remember many particular parts of the songs, but
I do remember that I liked them when I heard them. This generally mean that
the artist has come up with some pretty interesting and original stuff. And
it compels me to listen again. Just my opinion.

wow, i was expecting to get flamed off the face of the earth...:) I'm
impressed, the Jam must've grown up a bit in the last few months...haha
well, I said I listened to it all the way through 3 times, and I've put it
in many others times, but I just couldn't get into it enough to listen. I
had to almost force myself not to eject it those 3 times...hehe. I'm sure
it's an album that will grow on me, but I don't think one thing will ever
change, that I just don't care for Jordan Rudess as a member of DT. But
hey, it's only my opinion, I've read other people's messages who say they
really like him, and I can respect that, hell, I admire that you're able to
appreciate him. There are alot of different types of DT fans, and I'm the
kind that likes the balance that I felt they had with Derek, where they
could rock, be soft, and be "proggy." (I know, dreadful choices of words,
but it's late) I also VERY much miss the organ sounds that Derek used,
yeah, some people hated them, but I loved them, and are so much better IMO
than this percussive stuff Jordan tinkers around with. As for the piano
stuff, well, I found Derek had a good balance of it, but could always have
used more, I love piano. If there is one thing I'll say about Jordan, is
that he is good with using alot of piano, but then, I just don't dig his
style with it...:) I just think of Derek's comping in LitS and it's almost
orgasmic...hehe....oh well, i'm hitting the sack, and may everyone rock on!!!

well, if you knew anything about music history, punk music was started as a
reaction to the over -indulgence of the progressive rock of the 70's. In
other words, it was supposed to be the total opposite of prog. So the guy
was not exactly wrong in saying what he said. However, punk has changed,
the ideas behind the music has changed, and some punk bands such as Thought
Industry and others have taken the music a little further...but hell, it's
all general labels that end up being pointless anyway...:)

    IYHO.

Remember that it's all a matter of... taste!

I think Extinct Instinct was *excellent* stuff, especially if you're
into DT. Psychedelicatessen didn't impress me at all, and their new
one, while being decent, left my player pretty soon.

And I *love* Damian Wilson's "whiny vocals"!

    All IMHO of course ;-)

I agree. I couldn't get the concept at first but I'm starting to get it now (since I don't really listen to much else). I still don't think the story is really clear. I have to read the lyrics and pay attention. But that's cool. The album kicks ass. I love SFaM.

Ok, you can get 'em at Laser's Edge, and there's one other place that I know of... Impulse Music? or Impulse CD? Something like that. Laser's Edge had the best price, probably because they're the label which released the CD. :) As for CYNIC, I'm not sure you can buy this CD anymore. I don't even know what label it was released on, but I'm sure someone could burn you a copy of it, or get it to you on MP3s or something. Of course, I do not condone any of those actions. ;) I'm sure you've heard about Aghora on the list here before, Reinert and Malone are in that as well...

I've heard of Clockwork before. I live just outside of Philly, right by Lansdale, if you know where that is. I work in King of Prussia... I haven't actually heard the music, but now that you mention it, I'll try to find samples. :) How is the singer? I dont' like the singer to Shadow Gallery either... that's what ruins most prog music for me. :)

By the way, how did those guys get Sean to play on the album? I haven't heard of Clockwork from anywhere but this list before, so I didn't know they were that big (or not that big...)

Quick question......does anyone own Shadow Gallery's Tyranny??? I have been debating over whether or not I should purchase it or not. I liked Carved In Stone, especially Cliffhanger.....but I just can't stand the lead singer. I just don't like his singing style....would anyone recommend it? I can deal with the lead singer...I think that they are an incredible band. Steve La Monica

I have Shadow Gallery's Tyranny and I think it is a great CD. Worth adding to your collection. Another CD I find great to add to your collection is Ice Age. For their first CD I find that it is awesome for a debut. BTW DT's new CD I think is awesome too. :) The Wizard

Personally, I've found that if I can remember a lot of an album after listening to it just 2 or 3 times then I tend to get bored with it very quickly. This (among other reasons) is why I stopped listening to a lot of 80's metal. Now, this doesn't meant that I definitely will like an album if I don't remember it, but at least i'm probably not going to be bored with it. So, that much is good. Also, this doesn't mean that you will like the album after giving it a few more spins. I'm just saying don't give up on it yet. Personally, I've found that the albums I end up enjoying most are ones where after 2 or 3 listens I don't remember many particular parts of the songs, but I do remember that I liked them when I heard them. This generally mean that the artist has come up with some pretty interesting and original stuff. And it compels me to listen again. Just my opinion. -Mike
