When I saw the show last Sat., Buckethead played first, and Incubus
played second, then Primus. I personally think I liked Incubus better at
Ozz Fest a couple years ago (I really do dig the percussion they add to a
    few of their songs).

And you thought Tales From Topographic Oceans was long and overdone!

CAIRO (Reuters) - French rock composer Jean-Michel Jarre will perform a
12-hour long ``electronic experience'' in front of 50,000 people at
Egypt's Giza pyramids to usher in the millennium, organizers
    said Tuesday.

``A crowd of 50,000 people are expected to watch 'The Twelve Dreams of
the Sun', which Jean-Michel Jarre will perform with the help of over a
thousand performers and musicians,'' organizers said in a statement.

I for one will wait for the DVD of it to come out next June.

Well, I respect everyone's opinions on this, but
    I couldn't disagree more. I am a musician, a
percussionist, and the one thing about most of
today's music that bothers me is the lack of
guitar and keyboard soloing. Most of the songs
out there are verse, chorus, verse, chorus. Now,
I know I make it sound like there isn't much
musical content, but there is. I think that there
is something missing, the emotion of the
musicians playing the music. Don't get me wrong,
I think that there is emotion going into the
music, there just isn't an individual voice
(ie:guitar or keyboard solo) going on. It really
bother's me. When a great player plays a heart
felt solo and puts his soul into it, it adds so
much more to the music. At leaste it does to me.
Let's look at Voices for example, without the
guitar solo, that song is VERY emotional. But now
consider the solo, in my opinion, this is one of
JP's most emotional solos. With it in the song,
the rest of the band builds and builds in the
background with the climax of the solo until it
breaks into the bridge (Maybe I'm just Cassandra
fleeting), I think that this serves a great
example of why the solo expression needs to be
    left in the music.
So, for what it is worth, that is my opinion. I
would never sit at home, with my pitiful life,
just to listen to music and edit out some of the
BEST parts of the music. I have better things to
    do.
    FLAME ME AT WILL!!!

    Back into lurk mode,
    Glen

Wow, I'm surprised that you panned the album as much as you did. I also
picked the album up today, and I friggin' love it. I am not a musician and
therefore can't hold a logical argument with you over many of the points you
made, but I've listened to enough music over the years to know what I like
and what I don't. And this, I definitely LOVE. I think that the symphony
really complements the band very well. The older classics sound fresh and
new, and the brand new songs are awesome, IMO. I absolutely love "No Leaf
    Clover"... good stuff!!

Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I couldn't let this
one slip by without pointing out that there is at least one Jammer out there
that thinks this is an outstanding album. But then again, I'm a die-hard fan
(Tallica and DT are my 2 fave bands)... including Load and ReLoad. (Even
though, I think that MoP was their shining moment.) I will agree with you on
this, however... "Bleeding Me" is one of the best songs they've done in
years, actually IMO, one of their best EVER.

I don't want to start a flame war, or a "Metallica sells out" thread or
anything... I just wanted to throw my 2 cents into the mix and leave it at
    that. :-)

I dunno. IMO, it's MUCH harder to convey emotion through shred. I think
that's why alot of SFaM doesn't strike me as much like their older albums.
My favorite JP solos stem from Scarred, Learning to Live, and probably my
most favorite is in Lines in the Sand. Those solos simply BLEED emotion.
Just the mere mention of those solos give me the chills. I can't think of
any of his playing in SFaM that gives me that feeling, except for parts of
Overture 1928. As far as Jordan goes, he's got some killer shit, but he
goes a little over the top on this album himself. (Like the intro to One
    Last Time).

Be all, end all... If it weren't for James and the concept, this album
wouldn't even rank for me. :\ Ah, well.

Hi guyz!!! Friday evening I went to Milan to see DT and it was amazing!!!!!!

TILES, the special guests were AWFUL. I was goin' to throw up!!!! The sound of the guitar was bad, the guy had no presence on the stage (he watched always down) The drummer was quite good, but nothing special.

After this shit, DT!!!! Metropolis's intro started and Portnoy was standing up on his drums and with his sticks in his hands, well, my blood became mad in my veins!!!!! The played the same track lists as other gigs before in Europe, lots of old stuff. 5 songs of SFAM: Overture, Strange Deja, Trough my words (one of the best, IMO), Fatal Tragedy and Home. Jordan Rudess is god!!!! He is more a pianist than a keyboardist and I love this thing! He played a long solo with tons of classical stuffs and all the people were fuckin' crazy!! Mike Portnoy is always the best drummer in the world (this not IMO but it's true) very aggressive and Technical . Petrucci has improved a lot is presence on the stage. The first time I saw DT he stayed motionless and without passion (u know, compare him with Yngwie.....), but now he's a bit better. La Brie is becoming a cask and loosing is hair but he played very well, with a lot of feeling. At the end of the show a Portnoy stick falled on my back and after on the floor!!!! A royal Rumble started but I didn't got it!! FUCK!!!!! Finally , the best DT show I've ever seen (can't wait for Metropolis 2000 Tour, I'll be there!!!!!!) Xer'z, if u have a chance, go to see them!!!!

It's that crazy popular music thing. Everything is a song. We don't know how to process it any other way so we refer to everything as a song. Classical at least has names like sonata and symphony. We have pieces that seem like songs but no one sings!

Oh. That sounds like "cutting the solos doesn't detract from the album" which is what I thought you meant. I guess I'm missing something there.

    > TOT is > the only DT song where it just sounds like they thought "shit, we've got > this song, and we need to get a solo in there somewhere". It's not a slowing > solo, nor an instrumental section, it;s a solo section (does that make > sense?)

    Sure it makes sense.

    >, and I don't like that.

Oh. Most songs that I hear have just a "solo section." A time when the vocalist takes a break and the guitarist solos. The solo is usually over the chorus but maybe the verse and the chorus. Just a solo. Take it out and you'd never know any difference.

    > I do like both the solos, but while I wanted > to chop them both, Derek's solo segues into "The Wasteland", so I couldn't.

See, this is where I get confused. You like the solos but you want to take them out. I don't get it. Maybe you're just having fun with your new software?

    > As for TAMP, I just can't help but feeling it's more concise minues the > second (rather superfluous, lets face it) verse.

superfluous = "unnecessary; useless; excessive" I don't feel that way about any of the instrumental sections of any of DTs songs nor any of the instrumental pieces that they include on their albums.

    > There is no WAY you can get "Simon hates all the solos" out of what I said!

Of course there is. I did it. I must have misunderstood you.

    > And there's no WAY that MOST of JP's solos are expendable!

Of course they are. In what way do they really contribute to the song? You're over there cutting out all the solos and making your own disc of DT albums that doesn't have solos or instrumentals. I took that to mean that you don't like those parts. I couldn't figure out why you would do it otherwise. I guess you could be experimenting. I don't know. I just think that the solos and instrumental sections and pieces are awesome. I don't want any piece of the albums taken out.

    > A song, by definition, has words and tells some sort of story. A solo is just an added bit. < I disagree on two different angles. 1) A song doesn't, by definition, have words and tell story. Hell's Kitchen is a great song, but it does neither. It's more textural, like perhaps the difference between the Mona Lisa and some of the impressionist landscape paintings. They're all great paintings, just different styles. Just like Hollow Years and Hell's Kitchen are both great songs, just very different styles.

    2) I don't think that solos should be downplayed so much. I find it fascinating to hear a guitar solo and then a keyboard solo. Petrucci and Rudess have (no surprise) different musical styles, and w/ solos, you can hear their individual styles. It adds so much more to the music, I think. And it's interesting to hear them separaly, then think about how the stuff they play together is influenced by their individual styles.

nicole, pikachu is one character of that Pokémon (pocketmonster) toy movement which is mighty popular with US 6-14 year-olds. pikachu is yellow and his 'move' is to electrocute his opponents. Hope that helps, seb

Saw them yesterday in Luxemburg - of all places. What a difference compared to the Brussels gig !! Everybody enthousiast, smiling faces alover, good sound. That is how it should be. Even thee sound guy read my complaint about the lack of keys in the mix, because they were right there yesterday :) ... However the guys did not read it, because they still play HY, which is not their best material IMVHO.

Furthermore, don't know why all you people are syaing 'Tiles sucks'... I liked them - well, except for the vocalist. Otherwise, funny guitarist - did not know Brad Pitts brother is playing in this band - good drummer (compare this to Ulrich) - enthousiast bassman, some interesting songs. Don't know why most of the people are complaining about them. I will check their records out..

    BaaiBaai and Bang !

Went to see this show....lotsa fun. :)

We were outside the venue during Buckethead's set (early-starting show at Atlanta's Tabernacle) so I didn't get to see it; what I heard from outside sounded good but I heard mixed reviews of the visual part from folks who were inside.

If the show had been just Primus I wouldn't have gone since I had to take time off work, but Incubus was also opening and I've really gotten into Incubus thanks to Bernd from Superior, who recomended them to me (he has a good idea of what I'll like, music-wise :)) From the moment they began their set the crowd was really into them (surprising, really, since they don't get a whit of airplay here) and even the band was visibly surprised at the number of obvious fans in attendance. They were tight and energetic; even my metalhead roommate liked their set a lot.

After their set I wandered out (the main room at the Tabernacle had gotten realllly hot, and there are a number of really cool little side-lounges with TV monitors, etc.) and noticed there was a table set up in the entrance -- "buy an Incubus CD and meet'n'greet the band at a private gathering later" -- and I bought a copy of their new one. (My original copy had wandered with me across the Atlantic to Progpower, as Bernd had requested I bring him a copy and I'd brought him my only one. :)) Cool, saved me the trip to the store on Wednesday....

Then it was time for Primus' set. I was in-and-out of the main room during their set since it was really hot in there, and there were other distractions (like the weird chap wearing a dress who got tossed out the front for creating a disturbance, then took off the dress outside while being cornered by the police, revealing nothing underneath), but they played their usual cool set to an appreciative crowd (they get very minimal airplay here). Total attendance was about 2300-2400, and it was crowded, even tho capacity is 3000.... No "Tommy the Cat," but they did play "Jerry," so no rioting ensued. Someone with the tour remarked it was the first time they'd altered the setlist since it started, but I didn't get the details.

After Primus' set a crowd gathered by the entrance -- the people for Incubus' meet'n'greet -- and we were ushered into a side room to wait for the venue to clear; then we filed out to meet the band and get autographs. 150 people (!) had availed themselves of the opportunity to pick up a CD and meet the band, more than at any other stop on the tour so far, so it took a while, but they were really cool and signed all 3 inserts I brought (I cheated a bit :)). They were fascinated to hear that I've played their stuff over Net radio and thought it was cool that people into prog-metal liked them, too. :)

Then we went outside, only to discover that my car had been locked inside a parking garage, but that's a tale for my webpage, involving bolt-cutters, police cruisers, and a rather resourceful (and daring) street-bum. :)

Both of those albums were a serious departure from her previous sound-- a girl and her piano. They had a little more of a techno sound to some of the songs. My favorite of the two is Choirgirl. I love all the songs on it. When it came out, the rumor du jour was that "Northern Lad" was about Robert Plant, but who can be sure? Anyway, there ya go.
