Now, I did really dig the nunchucks thing he did. I have to admire that.
I'd be hitting myself in the nuts so bad... .
I really dug it when he jammed with Primus, it's just that his solo set
had no band (except a DJ that came out and did some stuff during a song
or two), which was kind of lacking in a live setting. It was also kind
of difficult to tell when he was actually playing (I was a little far
from the stage, so I couldn't see real well), and when it was the tracks
he was playing along with. The mask and bucket were alright, it was just
his overal presentation that I'm not sure I got. The music was actually
pretty decent, though. Some pretty fast (and somewhat tasteful)
    shredding.

Thanks. I thought I was going crazy from all the bashing I've been
hearing that song take in different forums. That's got some sweet DT
    prog moments in there too!

Interesting that you mention Zappa. To my ears, DT constructs many of
their tunes similarly. What I mean is, there'll be a vocal section with
some hooky groove, then BAM, they hit you with an extended improv
section filled with prog and general jamming. What works for me is how
it's all packaged into a song.

Ok, so they're not talking about a getting an ice pick in the forehead
as the drummer polyrhythmically rips over the comedic lyrical content.
    Different beast :)

I'm not sure if you mean that you can't tell John's solos from Derek's or if
you mean cutting the solos doesn't detract from the album. I'm guessing the
latter. To that, I have to completely agree. You can cut all the
instrumentals and all the solo sections and it won't matter! The songs will
still be good songs and the album will still be a good album. Solos are
    always expendable.

I can certainly understand if some people don't like the solos and
instrumentals. I can't relate but I can understand that some wouldn't like
it. As I said, the solo is always expendable. It's not like a symphony or
something. It's just another section of the song. A song, by definition, has
words and tells some sort of story. A solo is just an added bit. But some
folks are saying that they are a waste and that they're boring and they
shouldn't be there and DT needs a producer to tell them when to start
singing again and when to stop jamming. I guess so. I can't disagree that a
producer is a good idea. It's always good to get an outside opinion. But I
love DT's instrumental stuff. I don't have any problems with it. I love
SFaM. I couldn't disagree more that the instrumental parts are a waste and
that the solos are boring. Of course, all of this is subjective anyway.

I feel that the solo parts and instrumental sections and pieces are such a
part of what DT is about that if you don't like them, you're missing out on
a part of the band's music. I guess all I have to say is Fast Forward. If
you hate the instrumentals or solos so much that you want to spend time
cutting them out, go for it.

Okay, here's the reason I think this song is here for what reason. I don't think it's meant to move anyone or anything remotely like that. I think it's for all the musicians out there to have fun trying to get the song to sound just as cool as they did. It's like a little taste of metropolis 1 on the album. I'm not that great of a drummer, but even just faking some of the parts on that song is so much fun! It sounds cool, and it's fun to play. There's really not a whole lot you can ask for!! Just my little idea... TonyC

Hmmm... I'm no keyboard player, but if someone had one physical "keyboard" on stage, couldn't they control a whole rack full of synths? Including a rack-mounted Trinity?

Of course there's probably a reason this might not work that I'm not aware of...like compatibility or playability problems?

I have an INFO ImageReader Ultra scanner I bought about a year ago. A while back, my comp. had a big crash, and some stuff (including the InfoCenter Lite scanner program) got erased.

Anyhow, I went to re-install the Infocenter Lite software....... and lo and behold, when it asks for the serial number (and I enter it CORRECTLY) it tells me it's an invalid number! WTF!? It worked before!? Anyhow, I would call INFO up (and in fact I tried) but I believe they went out of business!!!

Is there anything I can do? Any way I can bypass the damn serial number or something?

Hey, for you folks that have seen primus, is Incubus still playing with them? I heard that a leg of the tour was going to be Incubus, Buckethead, and Primus, and I just about creamed. Incubus is one of my favorite bands. For their older stuff, think of 311/korn-style adidas metal with a really badass singer (very reminiscent of Mike Patton) and you have Incubus. They branched out a lot on their newest album, which came out the same day as SFaM. The new music is a lot more chill, and definitely more mature; it's so full of emotion and expression that it is absolutly amazing. it's a shame they don't get more exposure. they are better than any of the other new metal bands I've heard. Bass Player magazine called their bassist one of the ten bassists to look out for in the next ten years (it was like a 10th aniversary issue). Incubus is awesome. I highly recommend checking them out, esp. if you're going to see primus.

hehe, we kinda have a joke about that here in Arizona started by Eckie calling LTE "Liquid PreTension Experiment" :) I for one love LTE (especially the first disc), but I can see where it gets that kind of connotation. Also, I truly do not get it when people say "The Dance of Eternity" is not a valuable song. Heck, TDoE, "Fatal Tradgedy" and "Finally Free" are the biggest selling points of the disc for me. Well, that and the 'punk in 5/4' stuff is damn cool too :)

Ebony fretboards, EMGs, mahogany bodies, and a HUGE cutaway for the left hand on the upper strings. Now I just need $3000 to get one of these beauties.

I just got back from checking out Jazz is Dead at Toad's Place in New Haven, CT. I'm pleased to report that the infamous 'net' separating the drinking area from the main area is now on the other side of the stage, so if you're under 21, you don't have to stand off to the side (man, I was SOOO bitter at last year's christmas show....especially since I don't drink at all in the first place......). I'm not sure that every show is like this, but, Mr Portnoy, if you are reading, PLEASE TRY TO HAVE TOAD'S DO IT THIS WAY NEXT TIME YOU PLAY THERE! thank you. Moving on, Jazz is Dead was absolutely MINDBLOWING. On guitar; Jimmy Herring (Aquarium Rescue Unit), on keys; T Lavitz (Dregs?, Widespread Panic), on bass & stick; Alphonso Johnson (WEATHER FU*$&#N' REPORT!), and on drums, our freind Rod Mortgenstien. And, needless to say, they play only Grateful Dead tunes. They did a REALLY good job transferring the Dead's spaced-out country rock into hard driving funk-fusion. (very progressive, too, I might add). And, unlike most of the jambands, the majority of the fans were there for the MUSIC, not for the drugs. In fact: -There were only a select few who sported cheap do-it-yourself-in-a-day dreadlocks and wispy adolescent beards -I encountered no one wandering around asking "doses....doses...." -(Best of all) I DIDN'T SEE ONE PHISH T-SHIRT!!!! (I also discovered that you CAN dance in 7/8 and 11/8. I felt so cool being the only one who could dance to 'king solomon's marbles'. I guess the Ramones DO suck ;^) Anyway, during setbreak, I spoke with Rod Mortgenstien, and he had this info to offer -Ther WILL be a third band on the Metropolis 2000 tour, but it will not be Spock's Beard. It will most likely be some up-and-coming prog band, or 'the guitar guy from King Crimson'. I'm guessing not Fripp, but I'm not familiar with the currint KC incarnation... -Platypus 2 will be out early next year. I asked if they planned to do any shows once it was released, and he replied with a hesitant 'maybe'. Oh well...... -Met 2000 will mostly be in theaters rather than clubs. -[not really related, but] Aquarium Rescue Unit plans to tour once again in April. I apologize if the majority of this post is WAY off the topic, but I'm still very excited because this was one of the best shows i've seen in a while (and i've seen Ravi Shankar AND Tribal Tech recently!) My honest opinion, they never sounded better. I met them after and Geoff said he (vocally speaking) is feeling the best ever. He held the 18 second long note on Right Side of Mind perfectly. I felt like it was a Q2K show, but also a Mindcrime show, they played the whole Cd except for The Mission and Suite sister Mary. Kelly was rockin even getting close to the fans, putting a leg to the safety rails, and rockin hard with the crowd. I made of with pictures of me and Geoff, Michael, Ed and Scott. Both Ed and scott sung to me back and forth during the show, the first thing they said backsatge was: I remeber you, the hyper guy in the front and Scott-You raelly know your lyrics. I made off with a shirt, the setlist from next to Mike's pedals, the pictures, my Q2K CD completely autographed and one of Scott's drum sticks. Pretty cool night. The new stuff sounds really good live, and it was bad ass to see them head bang and play fast again (Mike was going nuts during the end of Breakdown) Two weeks, Megadeth and Doubledrive, my new favorite band of the week.

Yah, the Bulgarian / Russian pirate serie of SFAM arrived in Macedonia! :) Nah, I didn't buy it, I wait my original CD any day now by mail, but a friend bought it! E-mail me privately if anyone wants to stab him, ya legal whiners!

Won't say much, just that there's 3,4 pure Pink Floyd rips off on SFAM! :) Piano line in the back and James singing - WHENEVER I HEAR IT ROGER WATERS COMES TO MIND! I wonder why? :) No bash, but the influence is right there! Too visible to be unnoticed. Pink FLoyd rules loosers! ;o)

Also there is one part where LaBrie wails a-la U2 / Bono Vox!

I hardly think SFaM can be called a sequel to Met. 1. I have listened to it many times and have found no reference to the SECOND dancing turtle.

I like the fact that he only uses on keyboard. It shows that he is confident and doesn't need a whole rack to be showy. At Yes, Igor had at least 10, which I thought was about 7 too many. IMO, Trevor

Ok, here's the deal. I went to Sam Ash yesterday, and bought the Allan Holdsworth video on a whim. I saw it and had to grab it. :) I wouldn't call it an instructional video, but at least it has SOME instruction on it. I was wondering, with those 10 scales... out of all 10 of them, one has fingerings that I know, but the rest seem all sorts of crazy. Anyone else with this video... what kind of tricks did you use to memorize the scale patterns? or did you go about just memorizing them string by string or something?

It's definately cool to see Holdsworth run around the fretboard like he does... I thought he did more fret-board tapping. Anyway, I think any Holdsworth fan would love the video, even if they don't play guitar. There are some great songs on there, and the drummer (minus the hair) is really good! :) Chad Wackerman(n) :)

    Thanks...

    Jeff

ages ago, one of us maintained a list of various prog pages, with some minor commentary. DT had the most pages, but this was mainly due to a desire for completeness. Lots of worthless pages then too.

The Gateway to Erpland has been down for years now, and to get it back into working order would take more time than D has to give it. It was attempted earlier this year; with web pages moving sites, students losing school accounts, and so forth, just checking the list and pinning down new locations would take months. Then there is tracking down new sites, making sure links are spelled correctly... you can see what kind of headache this entails.

Believe it or not, progressive rock has proliferated on the web. D accumulated nearly 900 bands and better than 1000 links before deciding tothrow in the towel. He currently recommends Ghostland and progrock.com

This relates to the guys saying avout JR using 1 board vs Derek/KevMo using 3: Which it may be the case that JR can get all the sounds out of the 1 keyboard, he can't get them all at once. For example, I'd love to know how he proposes to play the intro of FF live - he uses strings, and then - with NO break - it's striaght into piano. You CAN'T do that smoothly on one board. Furthermore, you can forget using more than one - maybe two if he's clever - voices at once live. Even if the Kurzweill is the board of the gods

hmm maybe the same way he did 98% of RMP live - he splits his board. has a little magic pedal that he taps with his foot and it completely rearranges the configuration as needed. moo.

    >From what I hear of Jordan's prodigal playing, he splits the keyboard in half and plays say, the strings, with his left hand and the piano with his right. Considering his current board's 64 note (or is it 128 now?) polyphony, I don't see how this could be a problem. :) I wouldn't Look Past Him to use foot controllers to pedal any bass notes he needs (like an organ).
