Ditto, ditto, ditto, and ditto. I'm glad I'm not the only one around here
talking this up. This is an incredible progmetal release. You want to talk
about a diverse album? This is it. Compositionally, I think these guys are
brilliants, their chops are waaaay above par, they make smart choices and
give each other a lot of elbow room (i.e. you don't feel like you're
listening to a wall of sound for 50 minutes). Just great, great stuff.
Aside from DT, this is my favorite release of the past year - hands down.

    Hi all

I was at a party on Saturday evening with some of the
people from the scuba-diving club that I run. One of
the guys who was there is a long-time Dream Theater
fan and usually goes with me if they play over here. We
got talking about the new album, and his main comment
is, I think, worthy of being reproduced here. "Since
I first heard 'Scenes From A Memory' it's almost like
'Falling Into Infinity' never happened". I think I
have to agree with him - anybody else?

And now for something completely different: what on
earth inspired Genesis to re-do "Carpet Crawlers"?
The original version is one of my favourite songs on
one of my favourite albums ever. The new version is
complete and utter crap - all that's missing are rap
vocals, some guy scratching with a turntable, a techno
drum computer at 240 bpm and the members of the band
wearing ill-fitting Adidas sportswear. This album is
pure commercialism and selling out in it's purest
    form.

    stay safe and happy listening

OK, I'd love to see them get back w/Sammy (my favorite VH period), or do
a cool Dave/Sammy thing...... but don't Sammy and Dave both hate
Eddie? I've seen both of them (on Stern, I thin) slamming Eddie, and
saying what a liar he is. Sammy claims that he was actually fired, and
that the official statement of him leaving is pure bullshit. And Dave
claims that the band lied to him, and led him to believe he was back in
the band (when they did that brief little reunion thing).

My favorite books are the Dune chronicles by Frank Herbert.
They're massive in scope and complexity, spanning about 5000 years in the
distant future. The books are so rich in content and complexity, all six
need at least two reads to comprehend more than just the basic plot. I've
read the first book, Dune, three times in six years, and gotten lots of new
    information each time.
I also like what I've read of William Gibson. 15 years ago, with
his first book, Neuromancer, he coined the term Cyberspace and hinted at
how big the internet would/could become. His books tend to be very
cyberpunk/hacker stories, stuff I think would translate to anime very well.
I actually think Johnny Mneumonic(sp?) (w/ Keanu Reeves) was one of his
stories. If not, someone ripped Gibson off bigtime.
As far as classic authors go, I really enjoy F. Scott Fitzgerald.
I've only read The Great Gatsby and This Side of Paradise, but I absolutely
love TSoP. I like the post-WWI, Jazz Age aesthetic to his writing and
    storytelling.
well, I've got class in an hour, so time to go get ready. Ciao!

Yeah... Just Sammy said he'd only be willing to burn that bridge as long as Dave came aboard for the ride. I could see it happening... I mean, the Eagles did it. hehehe. But the Eagles had about 15 years to grow up, too. hehehe. Maybe we might need to wait 15 years for VH to get their shit together. Shit, they've already had 15 years away from Dave, anyway.

A friend of mine gave me a Magna Carta compilation (Prog Pest Tree) with really excellent prog music. I mostly like Bozzio Levin Stevens (Dark Corners - Black Light Syndrome - BLS does BLS..), Shadow Gallery (Out Of Nowhere from Tyranny), Explorers Club (Impact 3 from Age of Impact), Scapula (Attention Deficit from Attention Deficit), Dali's Dilemma (Ashen Days from Manifesto for Futurism) , Tempest (Jacobites by Name from 10Th anniversary compilation)...

I wonder if these songs are representative for the whole album... If I like these songs, can I buy the whole CD ? Seems like a lot of very interesting music to me !

    Thanks for any answer !

I would imagine it depends on which song as to the choice of 6 or 7 string guitars.

It's like playing a bass with more than 4 strings, if it isn't something you do all the time you have to think on your feet as to where the bottom end notes are. When JP is playing something extremely technical or something he is very used to playing on 6 string, he probably gives the 7 stringer a miss!

Just found this from the HM-mag's website, looks like Tourni will release their "SFAM" after their "FII" :) At least to me, this seems like *the* Tourniquet album I've wanted to hear ever since 1992 (or when was Pathogenic released?)

Tourniquet finished recording their new album for Metal Blade Records on September 5. Bill Metoyer produced the 11-song album, which includes an instrumental. =93The recording process was quite involved,=94 reports drummer Ted Kirkpatrick, =93but very enjoyable. Without a doubt, the vocal, drum and guitar tracks contain some of the most hectic and difficult parts of any Tourniquet album. There are numerous guitar leads, tempo extremes, vocal variations, drum solo, cello, classically influenced riffs, a =91Skeezix Part II=92 (as promised), lots of distortion; and, thanks to Bill Metoyer and great studios, the sounds are, well, pretty amazing. No album title is being announced yet.=94 An early 2000 release is expected. Ted has recently signed an endorsement with PowerBar. =93I have been using PowerBars for years to give me energy and stamina for shows and recording. It=92s an honor to endorse such a great product.=94=20

so, I decided to check out the official Tourniquet homesite, and much to my surprise it's updated, even had the new album title there (drumroll): "Microscopic View of a Telescopic Realm"... seems like the guys are totally back to Pathogenic style. Hooray!

Also.... there are rumors that Marty Friedman plays guitar on the 2 "new" tracks that were on the Collected Works album, I found an interview where the guys comment it like this:

    >>>>>>>>

Patrick: Oh - on to the Collected Works CD. The 2 new songs on it are fantastic! In Germany, they are favorite of many people. Those solos, they sound like the guitarist in Megadeth, Marty Freidman. He has the special style. I listen to all his music and Cacophony to. Is it him, because I read in HM you are friends and see him in a picture with Ted and Aaron..

    Ted: Next question, please.

Luke: It was Nigel Tufnle? from Spinaltap. (laughs)

    Patrick: What?

Luke: Oh Spinaltap - its a funny movie about a rock band.

Ted: When you visit America, we will watch it with you.

I also recommend that everyone give Clockwork a listen - I bought their album without knowing much more than their name and a few recommendations, and it didn't leave my car's player for about a month or two. Really diverse album. Not as heavy as DT, more toward the prog rock angle. Like a more proggy Spocks kinda...

Just check them out - I doubt anyone on this list would be disappointed.

To the guy who SFAM was made for us, aka the ytsejam, I think your insane. The band firstly make music for themselves and to say that they made SFAM for just 1400 or so ppl on this list is quite absurd. DT averages about 500K sales ww per album, that's less than 1% or so, so you figure out the rest.

PS I am off to Europe to see DT and PowerProg, stand by for reviews and perhaps some mp3's when I get back :)

Hm, here's what is written in "The Real Frank Zappa Book":

    {start excerpt}

The other fantasy is that I once "took a shit on stage". This has been propounded with many variations, including (but not limited to): [1] I ate shit on stage. [2] I had a "gross-out contest" (what the fuck is a "gross-out contest"?) with Captain Beefheart and we BOTH ate shit on stage. [3] I had a "gross-out contest" with Alice Cooper and he stepped on baby chickens and then I ate shit on stage, etc.

I was in a London club called the Speak Easy in 1967 or '68. A member of a group called the Flock, recording for Columbia at the time, came over to me and said:

"You're fantastic. When I heard about you eating that shit on stage, I thought, 'That guy is WAY, WAY OUT THERE.' "

I said, "I never ate shit on stage." He looked really depressed - like I had just broken his heart. For the records, folks: I never took a shit on stage, and the closest I ever came to eating shit anywhere was at a Holyday Inn buffet in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1973. <picture with the map of Fayetteville>

    {end excerpt}

Well, I think this explains it all. :-))

    Peace,

    victor

If not, someone ripped Gibson off bigtime. I tried to read Neuromancer a few years ago, and I couldn't get into it at all. It just seemed to be all this goofy sci-fi pretension. Oh well, I never understood the attraction of science fiction anyway. Neat toys just don't interest me -- I'd much rather hear great ideas. BTW, Johnny Mneumonic was quite possibly (next to Anaconda) the worst movie I have ever seen...I couldn't write something worse even if I tried.

They are some of the most beautiful works of art ever created.

I can't remember who said this, so apologies if I've got the wrong person. A couple of posts, someone ripped me for being sexist, because I made a remark about the 25" dildo thing; and how she always got ignored until she said something sexual. I'd like to point out, that whilst I sympathise with the point, you picked the wrong example. The post you ripped was about 50 lines, of which 2 were concerned with the dildo thing. Fair dos, 'K?

If DT ever do another live album and video, I think JR should get worried - it always seems to be a portent for the keys player getting sacked or leaving. Well, at least in one respect DT are emulating Yes.
