Saw the Q2K show last night at the (far from sold out) Universal
Amphitheatre. This having been my 5th time seeing them live, I wasn't
sure what to expect without deGarmo. Turns out, the show was better than
I expected. I'd definitely rate it above the HitNF and Promised Land
tours, but a distant third behind Building Empires (complete with the
entire Operation:Livecrime show) as well as the Mindcrime tours. Tate
was sounding better than I've heard him in a while...course this is
beginning of the tour, so who knows how his voice will hold up. DeGarmo
is definitely missed...don't know the new guys name, but he doesn't seem
to fit in quite right, and Wilton's solos seemed weaker than normal. But
anyway, it's definitely worth seeing. The crowd jumped to its feet
during the opening sounds of Revolution Calling, and remained standing
and screaming the whole show. High points (IMO) - lots of Mindcrime
tunes....low point - not doing one of my all time fave songs Take Hold
of the Flame...oddest song choice - Bullet the Blue Sky.
Songlist (to the best of my knowledge)
1. Revolution Calling
2. Speak
3. Falling Down
4. Damage
5. Empire
6. Liquid Sky
7. Spreading the Disease
8. Waiting for 22
9. Right Side of my Mind
10. When the Rain Comes
11. Breaking the Silence
12. I Don't Believe in Love
13. Jet City Woman
14. Reach
15. Walk in the Shadows
16. Sacred Ground
17. Breakdown
18. Bullet the Blue Sky
19. Needle Lies
20. Eyes of a Stranger
21. Silent Lucidity
22. Burning Man
oh, and BTW....opening band doubleDrive was absolutely awful! I heard 2
songs, and like a majority of the crowd there, went to the bar after
that. Their sound sucked, their songs sucked, and the bass player looks
like he belongs in Hanson.
Just my opinon :-)

I suspect Mr Portnoy whanged it in with PRECISELY that question in mind.
>If DT did actually start at #8 in Germany, I think this is the proof of
>what we always knew... THIS IS THE BEST MUSIC!!
I don't want to piss on anyone's bonfire, nor offend our German chums, but
before we get excited about DT being big in Germany...So's David Hasselhoff.
This speaks volumes, methinks.
>I ain't touchin' THAT one with a ten-foot pole. No pun intended.
Since when's Korgie had a ten-foot pole anyway?? ;)
>I was thinking the other day whether or not there is any leftover >material
>from SFAM and if so whether it would be released like Pink >Floyd released
>The Final Cut (the songs that didn't make it onto the >Wall)
I'd love to know where you got that little nugget; my understanding was:
1978-79: Roger Waters writes The Wall. 1981: Pink Floyd break up. 1983:
Roger Waters writes his first solo album "The Final Cut", and since no
session musician will touch him with a ten-foot Korg X3, he ropes in Gilmour
and Mason. Tell me differently, dude!
>"I'm glad that you say that. That means that we won on two fronts: We made
>our dream come true without creating an inaccessible mess."
This from Mr Portnoy. I think he's wrong; SFaM's hardly a mess, by a long
way; but it certainly IS inaccessable. It's dense, demanding, and I doubt
many people liked - nor anyone GOT - it the first listen.
In retrospect, I think it's time we defended "Infinity". Peruvian 7Skies was
iffy, but no more so than UAGM. BMS, JLMB, and HY were great; and then
you've got the big two: Hells Kitchen/LItS (let's face it, does anyone
actually play them as separate songs?) and TOT. Strip away the crap, and
that's a better album (and a longer one) than most of Yes' back catalogue.
And it knocks spots off "2112". I'd far rather listen to FII minus the dodgy
tracks than WDADU (this is the gap between "interesting" and "enjoyable").
And as for Mike's claim that they were forced into working with Desmond
Child...Sorry, I don't buy that. Sure, the record company may have suggested
it, but I think I hear the sound of back-pedalling.
Si
P.S., world's greatest bassist: Guy Pratt. So there.

Ok,
I know I may be unpopular to say this, but I would much rather have
Sammy back then Dave. I love (most) of Vh's stuff with Dave, but he was
always such a show off, it never really seemed about the music with
him. Sammy, on the other hand, is really a musician, and it shows on
5150 (my fav by them), the FUCK album, and even Balance.
Here's the good news, I don't remember where I heard this, but
supposedly, Sammy and VH (mainly Eddie) have buried the hatchet as far
as the past goes. Actually, that supposedly happened a month or so ago.
I can't tell you how happy I was when I heard of Gary's departure.
I was in the car, almost hit a guardrail. He always looked and sounded
like he should be in front of Duran Duran, not VH.
If Sammy comes back, I'll have (another) reason to live. Now, if we
could only get Queensryche straightened out......

Subsequent to the Awake Tour DT played three shows within a festival series
called "Rock Over Germany". Headliners were Rod Steward and Sheryll Crow for
sure, but I don't know if E. John joined for one festival. In fact, these DT
shows were "stadium shows"....

Why thank you. Actually, though, I'm just a sell-out. Korg is one of
the most popular posters here, and since I hadn't had a good 'jam in a
long while, I decided to be like Korg. But, if the fans demand it, I
can continue with the style change. ^_^
My chart ratings were horrid though; I debuted at #50 or so on the MFP
charts, where Al (a nostalgia act if ever I saw one) was number one!
Amazing! What kind of business is posting to the Jam these days? I
remember when it was about the ART, dammit!
Unless you were talking about another Matt, in which case I'll look
rather silly being random to impress DTGirls...

You know... I really can't stand Sammy's solo stuff, but I've always thought he was great with VH. I haven't heard any of the stuff with Cherone.. but it would seem to be a weird opposite. Everyone seems to like Cherone's other stuff (Extreme etc) but noone seems to like him with VH. Just food for thought.

Hi all,
Just got back from the firt show of the Metropolis 2000 tour here in Hamburg. It kicked major ass! I don't have the full set list in my head in the proper order but let me see what I can remember:
Metro I Strange Deja Vu Lifting Shadows Off a Dream Hollow Years Erotomania Through my words Home LTE medley DT old song medley Pull me Under A Fortune in Lies Only a matter of time Take the time Another day Just let me breathe Peruvian Skies
Hmmm...there must have been more but I can't think of any right now. The show clocked in at just under 1 hour and 45 minutes. And Mike gave a drum stick to this cute chick beside me and NOT TO ME *boo hoo*, I guess I have to wink at him next time *chuckle*.
Off to Hannover tomorrow night. See you all later.
Jason
P.S. The DT wool cap kicks ass, nice for the cold Northern German weather right now. :-)

hi all, after Monday's show in Hamburg.
>Elton John, Rod Stewart, and Sheryl Crow
they tourd with them I think it was 1995 in Germany open-air. It was, if I remember correctly some two weekends in Juli on two different air-ports in Germany. Something like that.
As for today's concert, I posted the setlist and a short review on Bogie's site (who took my log-in anyway????) and will add more after tomorrow's show. Talked to JJJ+M a little bit.everybody very pleasent. I go when's the best time to bother you for a signature?mike:"how many? one only takes a second" translated bad Hamburger Morgenpost review to Mike and James to which James answers"yeah, whatever"("LaBrie just doesn't have the abuílities to convey the emotional part of the music like Goeff Tate has")
Mike hears a sound(this is during rehearsal)"what's this" Hal(who's back, drumtech)"that's the cyberlight" mike:"jordan, what's this note" mike sings it,jordan"around d" mike checks with his cymbal bells" man, you're fucking scaring me"jordan was right"
john:"did something just fall on my head?something fell on my head" mike"yeah, that's some leftover debris from the ceiling from the alex van halen incident"
anyway cool show.
have to add this: two nights ago I sleot really bad and had a dream. I was late for a DT show which is kinda'no way' to begin with. Then, there were only ten people plus band. No stage set up, the guys in the middle of the room which turns out to be my living room. John P. is actually balancing on one of those new three wheeled skatechopper with a ball for a steering wheel(whatever they are called). They played two songs and then the crew started to take the stuff down. The weird part? James was wearing green kneehigh boots with stiletto heels....
By the way, check this out: when the guys performed PS tonight and I was speaking the lyrics... Vanessa is Victoria's mother. It's all so simple;)) later, seb

Hey guys... Just wanted to know if the guy who had mentioned this band could post the member's names. Back in my high school dayz there was a band that did DT and Fates covers as well as their own originals... they were called Clockwork... some of the band members' names were, John Powers, Matt Windt (rated CT's most "up and coming" bassist, he went to school in New Haven, but from NH) and a drummer named Jason (shit, I forgot)... anyways.. was wondering if one or all of them spawned a new band with the old name. I think that's true in most of the fans' minds, and it's a damn shame. People can hate it as much as they want, but they're fooling themselves if they think that the band feels the need to "take back" that record with the new one. Like any Dream Theater album, it has its high points and low points. FII may very well have some of DT's lowest points, but it also has some of their finest.

Personally I would love to see Dave back in the band. The "Best Of" CD the band put out a few years ago with Dave on two of the songs really showed the raw sound the band had lost during the Sammy era. I thing the songs the band put out with Dave have stood the test of time. (And I do like Sammy). But Eddie will never allow Dave back in the band due to the way Dave acted on the MTV music awards and the blow up the VH brothers had with Dave that night. Also read Dave's biography "Crazy From The Heat" for more behind the scenes stories. Now Sammy does have a shot with Eddie, but Sammys solo career is HOT, would Sammy want to get back under Eddies thumb again. That's one thing that Sammy commented on after the break up was that Eddie didn't like the VH band members to get into side projects. I did hear today that Sabastion Bach was rumored to be interested in the front man job. Any body else hear that????

Johnny Mnemonic WAS taken from one of William Gibson's short stories (with the very same title). But the term "cyberpunk" was not from Gibson, it was coined by Bruce Sterling, another author from the so-called "Movement". Gibson was part the founders/declarators of the movement, though.
Andy Putman remarked that he couldn't get into Gibson's SF. Well that's probably because Gibson openly admitted that when it comes to the technical parts, he often doesn't have a clue of what he's talking about. Some people say he's not really writing SF, he's merely using science imagery as a writing device. I agree with Andy that the idea is more exciting than the gadgets. For works in this vein, check out books such as Arthur Clarke's "Childhood's End".

I think he was right. This album is definately for the fans. For a start, a lot of it relies on you having heard Images and Words already, so its not really the first album a new fan would buy.

Neil, I completely disagree. I think the new version of Carpet Crawlers is the bst thing Genesis has done since ... Phil left the band. I didn't like it at first, but to hear PC and PG sing together on CarpetCrawlers sent chills up my spine. At 08:53 AM 11/8/99 , you wrote:

I can't speak for anyone else on this mailing list, but I'm happier than a pig in shit that DT are playing an LTE medley. This could be the most interesting tour DT's ever undertaken.
