No... I, for myself, don't hate you! I like VH & I like Gary Cherone, BUT together they sucked (IMO). Extreme was a GREAT band. And Van Halen WAS a great band. If this rumor is true, then (pretty much) it's either a break up of a once great band OR who's next??? David Lee Roth again? Yeah right it might happen.

hey all, at 11/10 pm central tonight, MTV will broadcast the Metallica Symphonica concert from MSG. I saw the video for Hero of the Day, and the symphony adds another dimension to the music, without taking anything away. true tonight will be live, but the finished product on the CD is something definately worth looking into. plus Micheal Kamen dircetd the symphony, and he kicks ass.

I was beginning to think I was the only one. IMHO, there are too many similarities between the two stories for it to be a coincidence. I'm betting someone in the band has seen the movie. It's definitely a question I would have for MP.

I can confirm that this was an inspiration to the band - it's in the M2 FAQ as confirmed by MP that it was. They used it as a basis for some of the storyline in M2.

'Cut Scene Theory' (it seems an appropriate title)

    - Nick is woken up by the hypnotherapist (note: 'open your eyes Nicholas' ... same as Edward's speech when he kills Victoria in 1928) - He walks to his car, starts it, drives home - Song music fades to his radio - Car pulls up at house with radio playing... he turns it off and kills then engine. - Nick walks to the house (note the gate of his walk... moderate speed) - He unlocks the front door, then shuts it. - CUT TO MOMENTS BEFORE NICK'S ARRIVAL ... NOW INSIDE THE HOUSE - the TV is on (as Portnoy said, the JFK Jr. death report is used to signify present day [and perhaps a foreshadowing]) ><

You must not've had it on too loud, or else you would've noticed that the TV is on before the door shuts. So either the cut takes place somewhere else, or it's all wrong.

Aye. Dr. Mindbender was the mastermind behind the creation of Serpentor, but there was another guy who came with a hypno-shield. Dr. Mindbender was more of an "evil scientist" type. This other guy was one of the lame creations that were perpetuated around that time. He was like called Dr. Hypno or something. I think he came out at the same time as Raptor, who I thought was really lame as well. But that's right, he had a black moustache and black hair. Dr. Mindbender, I remember came with a nifty brain manipulation device, this other guy just came with the hokey shield. ><

You fucker, now this is gonna be on my mind all night. I know who you're talking about, remember what he looked like, remember what his shield looked like, even had the damn toy...Crystal Ball? Something like that? He was `quite` lame. His shield had that effect where it looked like it was swirling whevn you moved it or something. Ah, the good ol days.

You know? This might not be a bad thing at all. I remember lots of people here getting real torqued when MTV said something like "This is the most original thing any metal band has done in years," (lol) but this could be a HUGE break for any prog bands who might be able to "sell-out" to Metallica's originality. :)

The one thing I know is that alot of Metallica fans tend to have an appallation (not Appalachian, damn homonyms) toward symphonic music. This could lead to bigger and better things. After hearing this and that Metallica has dubbed it goche (which will appeases thousands of sheep), they may start to search for more music incorporating symphonics, i.e. Dream Theater!

Metallica may or may not realize the propensity of this action, but it could be a benefit to all of the professional musicians who have to take day jobs. :) Woo rah. -- KorgX3 needs another blo... er... day job.

First thing: you MUST pick up _The Inner Mounting Flame_. It has the same blistering, take-no-prisoners intensity as BoF multiplied times a 100. Unlike most fusion bands, these guys weren't just a 'chops' band.

_Between Nothingness & Eternity_ is live and less focused than the above two, but it is still incredible. I can't believe the telepathic interplay these guys had. There are several other Mahavishnu CDs, mostly by a different lineup, and you may want to check them out eventually -- but they pale compared to the original lineup. You also might want to check out John McLaughlin's work on several Miles Davis (_In a Silent Way_, _Bitches Brew_, _Tribute to Jack Johnson_ and _Live Evil_) and Tony Williams albums (_Emergency!_), though that stuff tends to be more abstract.

I am kinda surprised someone didn't already mention this movie in connection with SFAM (sorry if someone already did). I watched it a few days after the release (first time I'd seen it in a few years) and noticed several similarities, at least as far as the whole past lives/hypno thing goes. The ending for SFAM is better, though, IMO.

I occurred to me to compare DT and Queensryche's albums and this is=20 what I came up with.

DT: WDaDU - QR: the Warning The First real record. Only fans like it (or own it :). Has great = moments in it, though,=20 but the production could've been better.

DT: IaW - QR: Rage For Order An early masterpiece, many fan's favorite one. Very original, clearly = defined=20 yet versatile style. Keyboards more prominent than on other albums.

DT: Awake - QR: Operation: Mindcrime A more metallic album than it's predecessor, and with a very different = (and better)=20 sound. Very dark in feeling.

DT: FII - QR: Empire Definite departure from the earlier style, far more radio-oriented than = anything=20 else they had done up to this point, and not many fan's favorite. = Features use=20 of outside songwriters or arrangers.

DT: SFaM - QR: Promised Land A combination of all styles they had gone through before, but still very = coherent.=20 A consept album (i think that PM is one) that has a very consistent feel = thoughout,=20 many fans favorite. Was written in studio and took a long time to write = & record.=20 Excellent artwork that has much to do with the consept. Very good sound = (awesome=20 production by the band), and the singer seems to have found a whole new = range=20 of expression.

(ACoS was an old song reworked, so it doesn't fit in there.)

I really, really hope that DT's next one is _nothing_ like Here in The = New Frontier.=20 And I hope QR would get their act together but it sure doesn't seem to = be happening.

Sure, get Inner Mounting Flame!!! :) Although, expect much harder shred and in general more raw power than on BOF!

    > From: Younis Hilal <yhilal@cds.caltech.edu> > > Anyway, I've noticed that BoF and IMF seem to get recommended > more often than other MO CDs.

Of course, these 2 are the trademark MO sound.

    > Somebody once told me that another album (called "Visions of > the Emerald Beyond", or something like that) was also pretty > good, but I've never heard it.

I have it. Funny, I didn't play it looong time, and 2 days ago incidentlly I took it to play it. It was first time I play it on my new stereo and was VERY surprised that I totally freaked out on the album, hearing it on good speakers (for a change)! It's really very good album, .. more sophisticated that IMF, but has moments of raw MO power. And just to finish the circle, the only other worth MO album is APOCLAYPSE, with symphonic orchestra! But better leave it for last one. I think there is 1 more MO album, or 2 maybve, but they suck. That's not IT anymore!

How about a positive comment? I personally loved some of the stuff Extreme did, and I thought VH was actually graced with his vocal presence. I've always like Cherone...kinda wish he'd stuck with Extreme.

Hey... I'm personally glad to hear Gary's gone (is this confirmed, or is it still a rumor). His voice was a little too raspy, although I must admit I liked his inflection on "Year to the Day."

A reunion w/ DLR would rule, but I'd personally like to see what they can do as an instrumental group.

No. Appellation means "The act of calling by a name" Appallation means to be appalled (to dislike, despise).

Although I made up appallation (I >did< check the Webster's dictionary for that, not there), I would tend to believe it is a grammatically correct extended usage of the verb "to appall."

Ain't? hehehe. I rest my case. :D I know Webster recognizes it now, just kidding. hehehe. :) -- KorgX3 scolds the grammar-nazis. :)

I agree with Joe. Even though I've got all of the stuff they did with Dave, I still like Sammy better. 5150 and Balance are classics, imo. The best stuff they ever did, I think.

Well, if Gary would have sung like he did on Extreme's first three albums, I don't think you'd complain. :) I think Gary is a marvelous singer when he wants to be. On VH3 he sounded more like he was trying to be Sammy. And I wasn't too fond of Gary on Waiting for the Punchline either. He must have beefed up his carcinogen intake after III Sides or something. :P -- KorgX3

Pardon my ignorance, but has DT ever toured Hawaii? I've been out of the country and now I am stuck in "paradise" so I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing a live DT show.

    Thanks for any info!

Hey, I just wanted to say that as much as I love the album, one thing bothers me. Why do Julian & Edward fight/die over this girl. Blood is thicker then water. We have no knowledge that the brothers have had a disagreement except for Victoria. I would sure look into the situation before I killed my brother over a women. I wonder if Nick doesn't die in the end. The "scream" at the end seems more out of surprise than out of death. There is nothing at the end that proves that there is a struggle or death. If he is killed, I think there would be a long drawn out scene like all the others on the album. These guys are so cool. Also, why does Nick not thank the hypnotherapist when he originally tells him to open his eyes in Finally Free. He just rises up and leaves. Very strange. That is why I think that the whole song is a dream and that the second time he tells Nick to open his is actually the time Nick does open them and "screams" because he was so overcome with all that he just went through. Although that doesn't explain the record player skipping. Just some more food for thought. See ya, Todd
