Is there any signifigance to the music at the end, other than the fact that
it's from one of Mike's favorite movies? I've only seen the movie onece, so I
don't remember, but what scene in ACO do they use that music? Maybe there's a
connection. Actually, I think there is already a small connection: having
your thoughts controlled. Maybe, maybe not.

Kirby actually reads a jam and comes out of lurk mode for a moment....

Sounds like a good idea to me. If you do it, though, I'd prefer two
separate sections. One section with *facts* -- things we know either from
the lyrics or from the band (like Nicholas is Victoria reincarnated) and the
other section with speculation (glass shattering at the end is a breaking
window vs. my personal theory that it might be a mirror from Vic and Julian
doin' lines). Once we get a 70-80% consensus on something, it becomes a
fact unless the band later says something otherwise. Then we toss the idea.

Isn't there some 21-second theory that suggests the segment with the drink
being poured is actually taking place as Nicholas is driving up in the car?
With perhaps the killer/hypno the rapist being the pourer of the drink?

-Nicole/Kirby thinks this is more fun than playing "Who shot J.R.?"

Im sick of reading people posting crap putting down anything or anyone in
this band. We have no room to bash anything DT has done. They are the only
Prog. Band out there that is somewhat big, and that we can go see at shows.
ON WORLD TOURS. See JR is different that DS and He is different Than KM,
Hence Different sounds!!! And different style!!! Woah!! I think that we
should all just listen and enjoy. We should understand that Jp is using a
Minor Harmonic scale because he wants to, and because that is what he thinks
it sounds good! We should not criticize the best artists out there. I love
these guys and we are the closest fans to them! They need us to support not
rip. Just my deal:)

fans on teh search thing, but i never do. My screen name is YtseBen. and
also, when nich is woken at the end, he screams. now that i think about it,
it could easily be him getting killed or startled. they made this story so
complex. that'd be really funny if they released teh info and we were all
so off target, and teh story was actually kinda simple. oh boy i'd be mad.
the first thing i thought when i heard teh creaking at teh end, was someone
hanging fromt eh rafter from a rope, but that makes no sense now. whatever.

Yes, far be it from a person to criticize something they don't like.

Actually, JR is just a bald version of DS. They're both gay. That's why
alot of people didn't bitch when Derek got the boot. All of the gay fans
can still get the poofter show from Jordan. :) Doh!

I bet we can get Derek to do some ripping.

My only bitch about the album is that there aren't any photogs of James'

Me too. I always thought that the cover was a collage of themes from each song - so of course there's a little part of each song on the cover - but I always thought the girl always reminded me of "Surrounded" - don't ask me why.

Plus, she WAS in the video for "Another Day."

>Why should he? As nobody knows what happens for certain after you die, her >soul could have been suspended in limbo for a while before becoming Nicholas >OR Victoria could have had another life in between then and now.

Amen.

>Read "The Miracle" lyrics on Finally free. This takes place AFTER julian >and Victoria are dead. How can Nick know this if he is only seeing things >from Vic's point of view?

Well, personally, I think it is certainly conceiveable that Julian and Victoria live a little longer in that scene (long enough for Julian to pull himself over/onto Victoria for a final embrace?), but more importantly, I don't think Nicholas is seeing that. I think the perspective shifts there (even though it isn't stated in the lyrics) to a narration, and I think the band wrote it there to tell the listener what is happening.

As you can read, Victoria says her bit in "Finally Free", then with NO indication of a change in voice, the lyrics go on to read "THEIR love renewed/THEY'D rendezvous..." Wouldn't Victoria tend to say something to the effect of "OUR love renewed..." unless the voice had shifted to a narration? Anyway, just thought I would point out those instances where some of the lyrics are not told from a character's perspective, but an omniscient.

"Beyond this Life", it could be argued, is not from any character's perspective (at least not indicated in the lyrics).

>>< > but you have to remember one thing about this story: we don't know one >Goddamn thing about reincarnation, much less if it exists. > >Correction: YOU don't know . . . I do. ><

Uh...yeah. Whatever.

Wow. I don't know where I'd stick it, but a sticker with the artwork sounds dead cool.

That should have been >profoundly simple to do, if that was the idea. This leads the listener to >think that someone is outside the car waiting.

Hmm...I'm fairly sure that we are hearing it from INSIDE the car, and here's why:

1.) As the audio fidelity of the music changes, we lose some low-end frequency content and some high-end frequency content, which puts emphasis on the midrange, like the cheap, paper-cone, factory speakers in most cars. Great, we've established that it's a car stereo that we're listening to (but we knew that already). I don't think there is NEARLY enough high-frequency content missing from the signal that would make it sound like we were listening to it from outside the car - it would sound muffled and muddy rather than just midrange-y.

2.) I'm sure everyone has noticed that, in addition to losing fidelity, the music gradually fades to the LEFT channel. Here in the US (and most of the world, I think) we drive on the left side of the car. I assume this is supposed to mean that the listener is closer to the speaker on that side, hence the louder signal in that channel.

(Personally, even though the left may seem louder, I find that as I sit in a car, I hear the sounds from the right channel much more clearly than that of the left, probaly due to the angle at which it reaches my right ear, but I digress...)

I believe that there is no road noise because he's just snapping back to reality after his little trip. (Have you ever been driving to a familiar place and you just kind of get on auto-pilot until you pull up in th driveway?) We do hear what I think is the crunch of the tires as he pulls up onto the gravel driveway, though.

> BUT, if that IS the case, why do we hear Finally Free during the >drink pouring?

I think the jury's still out on that one.

>think of for that occurance, plot-wise. In REALITY, I think the band left >some of these things here for us as "Easter Eggs" to make sure we wouldn't >get closure when we focused our 900-Brain-Power YTSEMIND on it. I would >be plainly and simply SHOCKED if we ever get a straight answer on the plot >from one of the guys.

I totally agree. I think figuring out what is happening is MEANT to be fun for us, as well as fun for the band to read all the wild ideas.

>I wonder if LaBrie got in trouble for giving away >that piece of plot in the interview he did in Europe that was posted here.

hehehehehe Yeah, I wonder if they made him stay after band practice and wash the blackboards. :P

>Just to throw some more potential smoke and mirrors into the SFaM >discussion, has anyone noticed that the main headline and the story in the >far left column of the newspaper are about Charles Lindbergh's >Trans-Atlantic flight? A red herring? Significant? hmmm...

Hadn't noticed that. Hmm...

Sheesh. Here we go again. If whomever said this is a musician, I certinly hope I never have the misfortune of hearing his music.

I think that the old logo IS the band. I couldn't bear to see it revised, and when I saw its return last tuesday, I crapped my pants with joy.

that may seem stupid, but for me, the packaging of a product has always been just as important as the product itself. Heck. I only like DT because the cover of Awake is so cool, i was motivated to bend down and pick it up one day.

To further strengthen my argument about the logo(it's not really an argument. I don't really think the band NEEDS the logo. i just really like it, okay?), consider this: All the DT albums you'd make your friend buy first have the old logo. You have Images, Awake, Acos, and this one. I can't be the only one that holds these 4 albums above the other 3(including OiaLT). And those three each have their own typeface.

a related point: there's no band pic in sfam! Because really, there can't be. there's no place for one. I was wondering if there was a way around that, because I like my band pic.

Also, is that beartrack studios on the back? Mike?

I'm done for now.

When the heck did the band say this? Is there an interview I've missed somewhere? All I've ever heard the band confirm is that Nicholas is the reicarnation of Victoria. And, of course, almost everyone thinks that the Hypnotherapist is related to The Miracle in some way, but I don't think the band has confirmed even that.

>At this point, no theories about the Hypno killing Nicholas in the end can be >correct.

Why not?

>So the bands own statements foil any guesses!

Huh? If anything, the band has basically encouraged all of our guesses by barely giving us any info/confirmations.

>It's not a rocking chair, it's the creeking of the door.

I agree. And even that Honky Tonk ragtime part you're talking about may not be as humorous as everyone seems to think. The first time I heard it, I immediately figured it was a reference to one of the time periods of the album, namely1928). As you say, DT are a *very* serious band and this album is a *very* serious album. Not a hair seems out of place and the detail is incredible...so many layers! Since another explanation (namely the one I just mentioned) exists for the Ragtime part, it makes sense that DT did it for a reason and not simply to be goofy or funny. If they wanted to do that, they could have had Jordan rip into the Looney Toons theme or the theme from the Simpsons, not something that actually alluded to the plot.

I said it, and I am a musician, and my point was in my debate with another person: yes, music displays mood, emotion, and so many other great things, but not *every* instrumental piece has to "go somewhere." havent you ever played simply because you love to play and not because you have to convey your emotions to your audience?

I don't want to make anyone's head explode, but maybe Nicholas IS the old man. Assuming he's killed(by the doctor, in the parlour, with the dagger) at the end, maybe he reincarnates again, but this time he goes backwards in time! I know it's out there. But I thought it was cool.

I was thinking of two things when I thought of this inane idea. 1) met. 1(nick's dream?) seems to involve a higher being: "you both shall be confined to this mind". such a being could maybe control time. Also, I have come to see "metropolis" as a portal of sorts, a space/time type deal where you go between lives and that exists outside of "time". just a thought.

And 2) the most trustworthy person in the world is yourself.

that Clue reference was only part joke, btw. as with you all, it seems apparent to me that nicholas is killed at the end in his home by the doc, and with a silent weapon. maybe he chokes him but I doubt it, nicholas is not that old. there are two daggers in the liner notes. coinkydink? all of this is summed up better in the met. 2 faq, btw.

but the time-travel idea is all me. You have to be damn stupid to come up with shit like this.

I have noticed that a number of .WAV files compressed into VQF's as opposed to MP3's (did my own 'show-me' studies) show less distortion on cymbals and so on...

Anyway, that's really neither here-nor-there, since they still don't replicate the 'original' sound...

Hi all

1: was Victoria a nymphomaniac? Yes. How do I know? Rearranging the letters in "Nicholas/Vicoria" gives "can oh via clitoris".

2: who shot Nicholas? His car. How do I know? The procedure mentioned above also gives "car shoot civilian".

It's 8.40 in the morning and I'm already bored...

I agree the Hyp is at the house waiting for Nic, listen to the sequence

A car pulls up Nic gets out and walks up the gravel path to his door and the goes inside slamming the door behind him.

Then you hear the Hyp walking up the same path on the GRAVEL ,who the then proceeds to watch Nic through a window as Nic watches a news report then following him to the kitchen window as Nic pours a drink .

Nic then goes to relax in another room , then we hear the Hyp walk to the front door again , the door creaks open and the Hyp quickly walks toward Nic who has his eyes shut as he relaxes...... "Open your eyes Nicholas" he says giving Nic a fright.

The Hyp is Julian( reincarnated) who has been waiting for Victoria to emerge in one of his patients ( the Hyp lives at the house where Ed and Julian lived as children and knew that whoever Victoria had become would show up eventually )

Mike Portnoy has said that there is a second reincarnation going on at the end of the cd.

I just spoke with a salesmen in one of the biggest music stores in Ljubljana (Slovenia) and he told me that SFAM is selling incredibly well, it's definately in top 5 most sold albums. Another huge store ranked SFAM as their pick of the month, which is incredible, because this store sells mainly eMpTyV crap...

It's gonna be great to get some sales figures :) Looks like our boys hit the jackpot with this one :) Damn this makes me happy :)

Hi everyone,

I've seen people write to the jam saying that we won't actually know the real answer to the story of Met II until the band tells it. That's bull- there is no real answer, and there can't be. We can't take the story and extrapolate the whole, absolute meaning and neither can the band; just because they wrote the thing doesn't mean that they can tell us- the listeners-what it really means! The meaning of a story lies in the readers (or listeners) -us- and is not a fixed equation actually contained within the story. The band may have their version-but that's all it is: one possible version amongst countless others. All theories developed by the jammers (and others) have the potential to be true just because the creators of these theories believe them to be true.....that's what art is all about!

See ya, Phil

"Does humour belong in music?"

Zappa says "HELL YEAH!" :) prog MUST be serious? Get outta here. There isn't MUST in art. Music is supposed to be fun too. -- CyberDuke ________________________________________________
