Does anybody else see at least a similiarity between the child in the
white clothes and the pictures of J.F.K. Jr. on the day of his father's
funeral? You know, when he made that famous salute as his father's
casket went by? The picture I am referring to is on the cover of SFAM
and is immediately left of the nose. I don't think that that is what it
is a picture of but it seems similar anyway. Alrighty then.

In a message dated 99-10-31 06:32:53 EST, you write:

<< Then what is Through Her Eyes? That's not Nick's memory, that's
something he actually did. He actually visited Victoria's grave. It can't be
from his memory. There are several other songs that I feel were not realized
in hypnosis, but things that happened *after* the hypnosis. If I'm correct,
then that would mean that a song like Through Her Eyes happened after
    Finally
Free, which would mean that Nicholas was not killed.

The way I see it is that the album is NOT one long therapy session, but
rather a combination of Nicholas's therapy and real-life experiences. Yes, he
actually visit the grave of Victoria (Through Her Eyes). He also visits the
murder scene (Fatal Tragedy) and either the Miracle or the Sleeper's bedroom
(One Last Time). These real-life experiences help jar his memory and help him
find out what happened. Through Her Eyes (which ties the demo of TAMP for the
most emotional performance from James) happenes BEFORE Finally Free because
had he not visited her grave, he would never have become as determined to
find out the truth as he became after that event, even though the majority of
FF deals with events that happened in 1928. I think I just gave myself a
    headache.

    Hey jammers,

I was reading my local newspaper when I found an article which is a phone
interview with James. It's an Ottawa (Ontario, Canada) newspaper, and they
called him at his home in southern Ontario. Anyway, it's a decent article,
with James explaining some of the storyline from SFAM, more specifically,
    this part here...

    FROM OTTAWA SUN:

He says, "Well, actually... it is about reincarnation
and that how our spirit carries on. The story, in a
simple fashion of storytelling, goes like this:
Nicholas, the character in the songs, comes across
some information through psychotherapy about a
girl named Victoria who was murdered in another
lifetime. And through a weird twist of events he
discovers that he was Victoria in his past life, so he
ends up trying to solve his own murder."
    [....]

He continues, "It basically goes to show that we
are all actually who we are today 'cause of
yesterday. That's basically it in a simple way. I
don't want to give away too much. That basically
                   touches upon it."

Hi. It's that guy who wrote about the Portnoy clinic again.

Ok, since there has been a lot of speculation about the ending and it also
bugged myself, I went straight to the source and asked JP (ok the lyrics
were written by MP, but it's close enough for me). This, of course,
happened at his Helsinki clinic. I don't recall his exact answer, but it
was something to the extent of "Nicholas drives home, encounter with the
hypnotherapist, after that: 'big questionmark'". He also stated that
"maybe the hypnotherapist is Edward, maybe not", perhaps being
reincarnated, not sure about that. (disclaimer: this happened a few days
ago, so I might have forgotten/missed any of the above. not that it was
anything that we really didn't know yet anyway).

But it seems that the band made the ending ambiguous on purpose, maybe
even they don't have a definite answer to what happened? Whatever the
case, it was a smart move, the list has been unbelievably on-topic the
    past days :)

I would have had many more questions about the album and otherwise at the
clinic but being last in the line for signatures and John being in a bit
of a hurry (having a slight cold, and probably also wanting to get home as
soon as possible - since it was the last date on his European clinic
tour), I didn't want to bug him any more than that.

The clinic itself was fun, basically the same as the one reported
earlier. An intresting bit were two guitars shown. One sweet looking
hand painted JP (not sure if there were any changes in the configuration
other than the paint job) and another which they claimed was the first
guitar in the world with piezo pickups in a Floyd Rose bridge. Maybe
some of the rumoured new JPM guitars.. John played on his usual JPMP1 (or
    2?) though.

BTW, SFAM debuted 6th on the Finnish chart (edging out such other strong
newcomers as the new Tapani Kansa). Not bad, but I would have expected
even more, since FII 5th on its first week. Any other noteworthy chart
    reportings from around the world?

I, of course, love the new album but have to say that IMHO the bass solo
in TDoE is silly. Sounds sloppy, too.

    Hey all,

Well, although I am from Europe (.hu), I could only get the CD on 28th. I
rang up the CDstores, went to the CDstores on 26 27th, but they said that
they dont't have it, and as far as they knew it hadn't even arrived to the
    Warner's.

    So on 28th I called the Warner's:

    - Warner Music Hungary. - said a blondie.
    - Good mornin'. I'd like to ask you whether the new album of Dream Theater
    - which should be out since two days now- has already arrived to the
    country or not?
    - Just a minute, I'll check it.
    <3 minute keyboard noise, typing...>
    - Ah yes. It's just arrived.
    - Thank you. Bye.

    They can fuck off.
In Finland that guy bought it on Fri, the other guy from .de on Sat. And
these fuckers @Warner cannot be on time...
But I bet you that the newest Back Field Blokes gonna be out the day they
    due to be out.

    Ohhh, shit....

There seems to be a misconception on the jam that it is Julian who is
gambling. It is actually Edward. For one, Mike said it was Edward. I forget
if this was at the LI singing or on the Yahoo chat. For further proof, see
the lyrics in One Last Time:

Heard some of the rumors told
    A taste of one's wealth
    Did Victoria wound his soul?
    Did she bid him farewell?

Insinuating that Victoria left Edward because of his gambling problem - among
other reasons - just as she left Julian because of his drug problem.

Has anyone noticed how the suicide/homicide letter makes no sense? If Julian
killed Victoria, why would Edward have him say in the letter "I'd sooner take
my life away than live with losing you" and later in Finally Free "I'd take
my own life before losing you" Makes it sound like Julian found Victoria dead.

This is what I love about you blokes of the jam (not). I, as a female, send

contradiction from some but mostly ignored. I send something about SEX or

I've thought about this as well, and for Awake and FII I actually agree with
you but... this, while maybe not being as prog as I&W, is a return to a more
progressive style; more progressive than anything they've done in years,
anyway. You must understand that this is a CONCEPT ALBUM. THe emphasis is on
the story, all their normal stuff would just get in the way. For a LOT of
prog bands, the progressive tendencies are toned down on concept albums
(though this is not always true). I think had they just written a new album,
we would have heard some really whacked out stuff, but.. I'm GLAD they did a
concept album, I've always wanted them to do one. Overall, I disagree, I
think DT are a prog band again, and the fact that this is a concept album
    reinforces that. blah.

Actually, if you want to stretch it and go back a looong way in time...

We see that Victoria is "Caught in a Web" between the two brothers.
Although she loves both, but she can't wait "Another Day" for Edward so she
ends up putting on a "Space Dyed Vest" and runs off to meet Julian at
    "6:00". Now.

Edward has "A Vision" on the "Eve" of this occurence, that Julian's demons
are trying to "Pull him Under" and "Burn his soul" in "Hell's Kitchen" and
calls Julian to try and help him but Julian only gives him "A Fortune in
Lies" about how he is being stalked by a rabis "erotomaniac," which is
strange, since Julian was normally a very "Silent Man." It's about this
time that Edward draws a "Line in the Sand" deciding that he wants nothing
to do with Julian, hangs up the phone, goes to bed, and "Waits for Sleep."

In the event, it's "only a matter of time" before Edward hears Julian and
Victoria's "voices" coming up from the alleyway behind his house. Edward
sees Victoria's "Innocence Faded" when she's under his brother in the
    parking lot.

The gunshots are really car backfires. The cover of WDADU is symbolic of
this. It's not mentioned but Edward keeps a portable forge in the trunk of
his car with a "ytesjam" branding iron. That sound is his car backfiring.
He whips out the branding iron and gives it to his brother, leaving him
"scarred" for life, which is rather short at this moment. Victoria screams.
Then Edward pulls out the gun and pops them both on "Anna Lee" Street.

Eventually, Edward is "learning to live" with the idea that he killed his
brother and lover. He was taught to "light fuse and get away" so he flees
the country to hide under "Peruvian Skies" where he "takes the time" to get
his life back in order. Soon he returns and becomes a "status seeker" going
off to become a mayor of a large "metropolis" and then a Senator.

Now, the story drifts forward in time through several "changes of seasons"
to just before the start of the "new millenium." Nicholas starts to dream
about looking in "the mirror" and Victoria comes to him to reveal the "lie"
of her murder years before. He ends up dreaming of an older man who he
tries to pry for answers and says, "All about 'you not me' this is. Riddle
with questions me no more. Inside yourself must you look. There the
    answers will you find."

So, Nicholas goes to this hypnotherapist to "take away his pain" who says,
"You will find yourself 'surrounded' by a bright light." Nicholas looks up
to see he is now standing "under a glass moon." He then realizes he is in
the world of his dreams. He recounts the whole story, the event "lifting
    shadows off a dream."

Upon awakening, Nicholas drives to where Victoria is buried and mourns over
all of the "Hollow Years" he had spent not knowing what had become of her.
He realizes that there is no "afterlife" but everyone must be reincarnated
after their death. "'Just let me breathe!'", he screams loudly. "Must this
'trial of tears' flow on for eternity? Are we all damned 'to live
    forever?'"

He gets back in his car and drives home and heads into his house unaware
that the hypnotherapist, now revealed to be none other than Donatello, the
rabid Ninja Turtle from hell, is waiting there to beat him to death with his
Bo Stick. There lies the end of the story. Donatello is "The Killing
Hand." Later, though, he gets tired of his job, and sends his resume to
"the ones who help to set the Sun."

Other than that, I think too many of you are reading too into the story.
Lay back a bit. It's less complicated than it seems. :)

I believe that it is going to be extremely hard to figure out this whole album without some video assistance with more clues (maybe an O:M kind of thing during the tour? Would make sense that they won't play as long as usual with the dregs and another band...so maybe just play the album and be done?).

    Anyways...a few questions:

    1. Is this whole album kind of an homage? We have had several band references thrown up in these discussions... QR, Queen, Radiohead, Zappa...and I think the beginning of Home reminds me a little of "the end" by the Doors...plus I swear I heard a little Hocus Focus in TDoE, plus numerous others that have been brought up.

    2. This may have been covered earlier, but, if someone was a senator, or especially if a witness was a brother of the victim, wouldn't this be included in the article? (obviously the senatorial seat could have come later, but brother left out?).

    3. I agree that someone was in the house at the end (tv on)...also, I find it hard to believe that it was someone sneaking up, as the thumps/footsteps right after the squeaks are pretty loud for someone 'sneaking'.

    4. What about the reference to Nick's son and wife, and the loss before? This doesn't fit right...why bring up the son and wife if there wasn't really a connection...maybe just a red herring?

    5. I noticed someone brought up Romulus/Remus and that this was through all time...we could also toss in Cain and Abel...I know that there have to be more than this though.

There are several other little things that bother me...but I guess this is plenty for now. I think a major piece of the puzzle would be whatever in the house in One last time shows him the truth...."and as I'm standing here right now I'm finally shown what I have always known". What could you see to show him the truth right then? A picture? Or is the 'shown' just a final memory falling into place?

    Any help on these?

Nope, you won't find me holding the match that burns you at the stake - they'll probably be burning me right next to you.

    >Lets be strait here: SFaM is VERY VERY good, and the more you >listen, the better it gets. Just don't fall into the trap of thinking that >it's a DT album, and therefore by definition the best album of the >year/decade/millenium.

Too late. It's already been passed hand over eager hand up to the peak of Olympus.

And it's not getting better for me, which PISSES me off, given that I've pretty much loved everything they've ever done. There are sections I like (a lot), but as a whole it's still sounding uninspired. I don't think those two LTE albums (AND Platypus AND Mullmuzzler AND Petrucci's appearance on Explorer's Club - all of which RULE, BTW) left this band with much of a head of steam going into this album. You can only have so many creative outlets before your creativity is outlet.

When everyone around here was slagging the production of FII, I was defending it. I still would - I've never had a problem with DT's production/mixing. Until now. Unless muddy/grungy mixes are your thing, the production on SFaM...well, is muddy/grungy. John Myung proved that he actually plays bass finally on FII. I'm still not sure he plays on SFaM after about the fourth tune. The rest just kind of blends together and there's no bottom end to speak of. Bands with a lot less of a budget are doing a lot more with it.

Yes, cos it has happenned to me before. Shouting out in fear from a twitch is like talking in your sleep. Nick had just gone over the whole thing in his mind again ala "Finally Free". So the shock of him remembering the gunshots may just cause him to shout. And by the way, the gambling sound in the track is not dice. That's the sound of a Roulette Turntable turning in a casino.

Y'know another great thing about SFaM?

This is the first time I've ever been able to hear nice things being said about DT on the 'net (outside of the 'Jam). I've only been a "'net regular" if you will for about three years or so, and I only started checking out prog and metal sites/lists about two years ago (just about the time that FII came out). So 90% of the time when I heard a mention of DT (my fave band, BTW) they were getting reamed for being a sell-out or something (kinda the same treatment Metallica gets around here).

NOW for the first time I get to hear stuff like "DT are back with a vengeance" from people I always had to hear crap from. Anyhow, it's just nice to hear all the doubters take back all the "DT sucks" garbage they've been spewing for the last couple of years!

Ok, it seems like a few other people are starting to notice this, so I thought I'd make a post about it. It seems as if A LOT of DT's other songs are meaningfully connected to SFAM. I asked Mike P. himself this question during the simul-listen chat the other night and his rather evasive <grin> answer was (and I quote): "Let's leave that Question up in the air for awhile". Seems pretty suspicious if you ask me :-) Especially since someone earlier had asked if their was any relation between ACOS and SFAM and Mike promptly answered: "Nope, no SFAM on ACOS". In any case, check out the lyrics on Awake and I&W...especially Awake...and there are a TON of connections between the lyrics on most of the songs on those albums and SFAM. Besides the obvious Met 1 of course, the lyrics on Caught in a Web, Innocence Faded, The Mirror, Lie, Lifting Shadows..., Scarred, Under a Glass Moon, Wait for Sleep and Surrounded (and maybe more) all seem to have a possible (and at times, clear-cut) relationship to SFAM. Now if only we had those cool font changes and character headings so we knew who was saying what and at what time in those tunes :-) Seriously though, all of those tunes could seemingly be sung by one or more of the characters in SFAM if you think about it. Of course, some of these could be coincidences but there just seems to be too many for them ALL to be coincidences. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've seen a few posts from others hinting at this and was wondering what everyone thought. Especially considering Mike's unspoken confirmation that perhaps there is another "veil of secrecy" on this matter too? :-) Anyhow, Mike, if you're reading this and all these songs are connected in some way (and I'm not just reading waaaay too much into things), Dream Theater is an even more incredible group of artists and musicians than I thought you guys were, and believe me, that is saying a HELL of a lot considering my high (very, VERY high) opinion of you guys already!!

I initially shared this opinion.... but after a few listens, i realised that the music was not less complex, just less obviously complex... Yes there are stretches of similar riffs, the intro to "Home" being a prime example in my eyes... but a lot of the time changes and what-not that seem to be the yardstick of "progressiveness" are still there, just written and executed so seamlessly that they're harder to notice....

    That's what i think anyway :)
