Reading the countless posts about this new masterpiece I wonder what the
correct way of abbreviating the album title is? Some write SFAM and some write
    SFaM.

The SFaM is probably because "a" is not a really a word, but on the promo it
says "Scenes From A Memory" (capital A) and on the official release everything
is in caps so there's no way to tell.

There are surely more important SFAM (SFaM) issues to discuss, but this is
    really bugging me.

    Oh man!

Ladies and Gentlemen, THIS is the Dream Theater legacy! Their best work to date and by far the most beautiful! I was so overwhelmed with emotion when I heard "The Spirit Carries On" that I really wept. Especially when JP's solo came in! Man! That pitch harmonic really hit the spot! This is what DT is supposed to sound like! This album seems to carry their very essence! I'm sure glad I took Mike's advice seriously about not checking out those MP3s. This... oh man! I could just go on. In fact, I'm still tearing slightly. heh.

For those who have yet to check it out, don't worry. The wait is damn well worth it!

By the way, anybody know who's face that is on the cover? I dunno if anyone thinks the same, but it sure as hell looks like JP's face to me (before he had that goatie). Especially the mouth. Hmm... but don't quote me. I could be wrong.

    Hey 'jammers,

It's good to be back on the list. :) I'm glad I unsubbed and waited 'till last night to hear SfaM. It was DEFINITELY worth the wait. I haven't made any judgements on it other than it TOTALLY rocks in every way... I'll have to hear it another 20 or so times to really get the full concept. However, Through Her Eyes hit me MUCH harder than I thought it would. Crying and driving on the freeway aren't a good combo. More thoughts later....

Oh yeah, and thanks to all the Houstonians who attended the release party last night. Another total success! :)

I didn't hear this until just now.

At 4:35 in Finally Free, you can hear "The Miracle" say "Open Your Eyes, Victoria." Pretty damn freaky. You have to turn up the volume and listen closely. It is right after the 2 gun shots. He says "Open your eyes, Victoria," and you hear 2 more gun shots. Like I said, really freaky.

Finally Free is a great way to get a good handle on what the entire album is about while Nicholas goes over everything in his head on his way home.

Haven't heard anyone mention this yet (and probably nobody cares), but my favorie song is "Home." Such an infectuous rhythm!

And Home (along with DoE - which I think is just an extension to it) is the song that ties in the most musical and lyrical themese between parts I and II (I'm writing an essay on this - will share when I write it). although I haven't cried from listening to this, I get goosebumps and chills when James sings "Victoria watches and thoughtfully smiles, she's taking me to my home" using the exact melody line (and most of the words) of "Metropolis watches and thoughtfully smiles, she's taking you to your home." Will need further exploration.

Gotta go back an keep working, but SfaM is just haunting me! Thanks to DT for this masterpiece.

    Wow!!!

At the suggestion of someone else on the list... I listened carefully to the very end. You can clearly hear another car drive up with the radio on ("finally free" playing), which is obviously the therapist. My question is: is that a rocking chair like people are suggesting, or is it the therapist slowly opening the door, thus the creaking sound.

A rather lenghty review which is written for my website Surfing Into = Infinity at http://dreamtheater.tsx.org

-------------- So here we are, one of the most anticipated CD's of 1999, and certainly = the most anticipated disc for years on my part. "Dream Theater - = Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory"... Even the title sounds great, = but first things first.

The veil... I can't possibly talk about the SFAM without mentioning the = veil of secrecy. This veil was supposed to keep information about the = new album from reaching the masses (or the fans anyway) and the band put = a lot of effort into this secrecy. There were however some people who = had obtained promotional copies of the new album and made mp3's from it = for the internet. So in one way, the veil failed. I don't think it = failed completely though, because it was still possible to stay away = from the information that emerged because of the mp3's. And the people = who did would be rewarded for it.

The cover art.... Some saw the resemblance to Fate Warning's "Still = Life" at once they saw the front cover, but the first sightings of the = cover was from CDnow for most people, in a small compressed jpg image, = so it was difficult to judge the cover based on this. I have to admit = that the first thing that went through my head when I first saw it was = "Lemur Voice - Divided", but after comparing the two, I have found that = the two aren't even remotely related. The thing that seemed to excite = most people about the cover, was the Dream Theater logo. Dream Theater = had returned to using the old logo from the IAW, Awake and ACOS days. A = lot of fans had been making request for this, and there it was. Another = thing that caught people's eyes was the full title: "Metropolis Pt. 2: = Scenes From A Memory". Some fans had dared to hope for an inclusion of = Metropolis 2 on the new album, but few had dreamed that the entire album = would actually be Metropolis 2. The main title "Scenes From A Memory" = fits perfectly to the story and it is a great name, even though it is = also the name of one of Mike Bahr's DT Boots. Back to the cover itself. = There is a picture of a man's face, with lots of small pictures = 'morphed' into the picture. We can clearly see the Majesty symbol, as it = is included on all of Dream Theater's official releases. The liners were = a little disappointing to me, as they are in black\white and only = features the texts for the songs plus the general information (produced = by... Thanks to... etc.). I was hoping for some pictures of the band, or = at least some form of colored layout. I guess that's the least important = thing about the album, but I still miss it.

The tracks... The 12 tracks are divided into two acts (Act I and Act II) = and in nine scenes. Only the scenes have track times (like 8:49) and = this was a little annoying to me. It means that there are only three = song without track times on the back of the CD. Not that it really = matters... The total running time of the CD is 77:14, and there is no = need to tell you all that this is a long CD. As a matter of fact, the = average length of the 12 tracks is close to 6:30!

The story... As this is a concept album, there is a story going through = all of the songs, and we get drawn into the CD like if we were watching = a movie. This is probably the main reason that there was a veil of = secrecy, as the story could be ruined for you if you knew the ending = before you listened to the whole album. It still takes a couple of = listens before you understand the whole thing. I have listened through = the whole thing about 7 times during the last week, and I have = discovered new aspects of the story almost each time. There are several = twists to the ending, and there are many ways to interpret it. In my = opinion the story is very good, and I think it would beat most of the = movies I've seen lately. The excitement inside when you figure out more = aspects of the story is incredible, and I thank the band both for = writing such a story, and for 'making' the veil of secrecy. I am certain = that my experience wouldn't have been the same without it.

The lyrics.... The Lyrics are very good, as we've come to expect from = Dream Theater. Portnoy and Petrucci still writes most of the lyrics, but = there are also contributions from both LaBrie and Myung. Rudess has yet = to put his name on a song, but with him being new to the band, that is = really no big surprise to me. Maybe next time. I feel that Dream Theater = has matured in their songwriting, and combined the best from all of = their earlier albums in the writing of the lyrics.

The Music... Ahh... It is absolutely amazing. There is no doubt that = these people have the ability to create great music. They have proved it = time after time, and they have done it again. Whether you call their = music "Progressive Metal" or "Progressive Rock", they still progress. In = this album there are really heavy moments and there are acoustic = guitar-moments. There is both top class shredding, and jazzy sections. = There are parts of songs that sound like geniusly performed = improvisations, and there are parts that feel like well thought through = compositions. A little bit of everything. As a concept album should = have, there are themes returning throughout the album, and also some = stuff from Metropolis Pt. 1 and other songs sneak in. The band sounds = really tight, and still everybody gets to shine and show off a little. - = Without ruining the songs! LaBrie doesn't have the high screams that = turned some people off, and I am sure all these songs will sound better = live than some of really tough vocal parts in for example Voices from = Awake that were hard to pull off live. Portnoy can still drive any = drummer crazy with his playing, but he is not all over the place on this = album. He is exactly where he should be, and he does it better than = anybody. Petrucci delivers top class shredding and is wonderful on the = acoustic guitar, he is truly one of the best in his genre. Myung, who = have often been 'lost' in the mix or hard to hear, is also brought out = of the dark. There are even a couple of bass solos for him here. He = shows why he is in a band like this, and that he knows how to use his = instrument the right way. Myung doesn't have to talk, his instrument = does all the talking for him. Rudess lives up to the expectations that = he himself created by playing like he did on "Liquid Tension = Experiment". He fits the band like a glove. I know I am praising them = all, but if you listen to the album you will know what I am talking = about. I am merely describing how they play... Also, Portnoy and = Petrucci's background vocals sound great, and they have really improved = over what I have heard them do live. Lovely.=20

The samples... Dream Theater has 'always' used samples of some kind. = They are not absent in this recording either. All samples that have been = used fit the music really well, and have a meaning for the story. None = of them are very dominant, and they won't ruin the flow in the music for = anybody.

Liquid Dream Theater... Some feared Dream Theater would sound like = Liquid Tension Experiment when Rudess joined the band, and others hoped = for LTE with vocals. None of you should stay away from this album. You = can hear some of the LTE style in their music, but it is certainly not = LTE 3. This is Dream Theater, nothing else. I really don't want to = compare SFAM to DT's earlier work, but if someone held a knife to my = throat I think I would say that this new album is a blend of IAW, Awake = and ACOS, with some of FII and LTE thrown in. You really have to hear = it.

The BIG question: Is it better than their best album? I don't know. In = my opinion, it probably is, but I have had years to digest the other DT = albums, and only one week with SFAM, so it is hard to say. Right now, I = consider "Scenes From A Memory" Dream Theater's best work up to date.

I would give it 9.5 out of 10 points because I hope that they will = return and make something even better in the future. One can always = dream!

I agree about McKean - he is truly one of the most ingenious artists out there today.

Some of his other stuff includes artwork for Toad the Wet Sprocket ("Coil"), as well as Stabbing Westward's "Darkest Days", the entire Cages, Black Orchid, and Sandman series (with Neil Gaiman), artwork for the latest in Stephen King's "Dark Tower" series.......as well as tons and tons of other material as well.....definitely worth checking out!

I think it's Edward going home, hearing the news, pouring himself a drink (notice how on the back of the booklet, there's a newspaper and a glass of something, I know it's dated the same day as the events but hey it's just artwork...besides I'm stretching here so humor me). Anyway so yeah Edward hears the news (which he was of course aware of) and has a drink and puts on a record...then the Open your eyes is the therapist waking Nick up, and now he really wakes up.""

    I respond:

Maybe Nick is startled/scared when he wakes up b/c he realizes that it was him (in a past life, as Edward) that killed Victoria and Julian. I really love this story line.

the site is under alot of construction. You have to click on the front window of the drivers seat in the bus and it will take you to the message board.. you have to register with them also. If you hold the mouse over each window it will tell you what they are for!

So Nicholas/Victoria goes home, closely followed by the therapist/Ed. Nick pours a drink, puts on a record, ponders his findings when the therapist comes in, startles Nick. This is where it gets real.

The therapist/Ed now knows the Nick is Victoria, the girl he still loves obessively. So he follwed Nick home to be re-united with his love. So what if she's in a man's body? The record gets bumped after Ed gives Nick a wet, sloppy kiss; lovers entwined.

and can someone tell me wtf that *screach* sound is at 2:24 of Finally Free?

Actually Mattymo and I touched base on that aspect too, and thought about a Freudian version of the story, and how damn funny it'd be...like Nich and Ed being gay lovers, and Julian being into bestiality (thus the farm) but we figured even though it'd be funny as hell, it's kinda disrespectful to the band.

Also to those who've been discussing this with me...I FINALLY figured out the 1928...god am I stupid...but I still stick with my theory...due to the Kennedy thing...I think Chris P. was the one I was explaining that to. Cheers

With all the creative analysis surrounding this new album, I'll just bet that Mr. Portnoy is kicking his feet and giggling his ass off! Something tells me that a few trinkets have been placed in there just to fuck with us. I just can't see them passing up the opportunity.
