I think he sounds just like Terrance...more Canadian than English, and
if you listen VERY closely (A good pair of headphones, and the volume
cranked) you can hear in the background a fart, and someone giggling and
saying "Hahaha that was a good one Terrance" It's VERY sublte though so
you have to pay close attention.

    Bernd,

With all your praise of Dream Theater's new album, I hope you haven't
lost sight of one important fact...

You never have to look far to find quality song writing and musicianship.

Look in the mirror my friend.

It sounds *exactly* like an English accent; I've lived in the UK for 22 of my 24 years, so I should know. :-P

What other kind of English accent is there?

Did you ever wonder if that "insane dedication" was the precise REASON for the "Veil of Secrecy?" It seems the logical conclusion to me.

To those who aren't yet convinced that the person who surprises Nick at the end is actually the therapist, listen to his voice. He has a very distinctive voice throughout the album, and it's obviously the same voice at the end that says, "Open your eyes, Nick."

The scratching is the record player which somehow got jarred in all the commotion.

The Spirit Carries On is a major kick-ass song. In a slow way. :)

Here's what I've come to understand about the last 30 seconds of Finally Free.

Apparently, the band members read all of Ytse-Al's speeches about how analog is the best and that you can only achieve the best sound quality by listening to vinyl.

Well, so what did the band do? Yes, they printed some VINYL copies of Scenes From A Memory. And, to get the best sound on the CD version, they just ended up dubbing from vinyl to CD!! How did the scratch and the static get there? Apparently, LaBrie's caribou raided Beartracks Studios because they missed him so much, and during their stampede, one of them bumped into the record player they were using to dub the CD version of SFAM --- right after Nicholas screamed! The record got knocked off its track and you hear the sounds of a record still spinning.

After hearing what the caribou had done, the band decided to just leave that ending in to create this sense of mystery because they realized that the whole Edward/Victoria-become-gay-lovers-in-another-life ending they originally had planned was just too silly!

Like I said, this is only what I've heard. I'm not sure if this is true...

No, the accent is definitely Australian, though not someone still living there. More like an American/Australian, or an Australian living in the states for a long time. A South African accent is somewhat similar.

I've been reading all these ideas on the story, some great idea guys. But I still have some questions. Every time I listen to the cd I change my mind as to reincarnation/spirit visiting theory. The hypnotist definatly said "Now it is time to see how you died." I listened many times to make sure it wasn't "die." That surely points to reincarnation. But the problem is that Victoria talks to Nicholas more then once in the "present". She tells him not to cry at her grave, but to remember her (sorry, I'm at work and don't have the lyrics with me). So how could they be the same person? There was another time when she talks to him but I can't remember now, I'll mention it when I get home tonight. This has been bothering and I just can't seem to work it out. Oh, another thing, he refers to Victoria as a friend not a lover, and he said "We'll meet again my friend someday soon." Did he somehow know he would die soon? I like the scratching sound at the end meaning his death, it makes perfect sence. His "record", as in his body, is thrown off track. Now he can't tell us "living" people his story anymore and there is just noise. A perfect ending. So does anyone have any text pointing to Nicholas' age? If the face on the cover is supposed to be him (which is what I think, and the objects in his face are the Scenes From -his- Meomory) he looks to be in his 30s, and I don't see too many 71 year olds listening to DT, but I'm still looking for that station that Nicholas is listening to in his car =)

If you accept that once you hear the JFK Jr. report you're in the present, AND you believe that Edward IS the hypotherapist, in the same life as the one in which he killed Victoria, then Edward MUST, no ifs ands or buts about it, MUST be an absolute minimum of 101 years old. the U.S. Constitution states that one of the requirements of being a U.S. Senator is meeting or exceeding the minimum age requirement of 30 years old. 1999-1928 = 71+30 = 101. If you believe that we're NOT in the present when we hear the JFK Jr. report, then I'd just have to ask why we're hearing a report on a critical and recognizable event from 1999, instead of something current from whatever timeframe you theorize it to be?

Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. II - Scenes from a Memory A Review

Before I begin: A short flashback of what happened to me before I bought SFaM:

It must have been in early 1996 that a friend of mine showed me this CD by a group I had never heard of. "You'll like them", he said. "The drummer is cool." I listened to "A Change of Seasons" in all its entirety and I was impressed. I as a drummer myself had never ever heard such musical perfection on a drumset before, playing off-beat and not 4/4 most of the time was completely new to me. In a time where I had never liked most "Metal" music (except some Metallica every now and again) and most of my CD-Rack was stuffed with CDs from Roxette and 2 Unlimited -I had, however, always LOVED Queen and thought the Bohemian Rhapsody Part in "The Great Medley" was fucking great (better than anything on 'Dragon - A Tribute to Queen')- , my friend introduced me to the world of Progressive Rock and how "Metallic" Music and melodic tunes can come together in harmony.

It didn't take long until I was completely hooked to Dream Theater. I have every album except OiAL, but instead I bought the 5YiaL video. Images and Words was always my favorite with ACoS close thereafter. In fall 1999 I joined the Ytsejam mailing list, and boy was that cool! I wanted to know things first about this new incredible album on the horizon. Well, we were told not to talk about it, but anyway I made a few new friends, finally got my hands on SubConscious (Hey, Olaf!) and found someone, who will drive me to Cologne, where I will see OFB live, and I laughed a lot! You guys are just great!! Monday, I bought the album, and here is my review:

The album is great. No one and I mean NO ONE can doubt that. The story is amazing -I still haven't figured it out- and there is a new era of musical perfection coming our way. Jordan Ruddess is THE BEST Keyboard Player Dream Theater had since Kevin Moore (I have lost track of them... small joke)! But Still... I have listened to this Album four times now and I will definitely give it a lot more listens in the future, but this IS NOT BETTER THAN I&W - IT JUST ISN'T!!! Let me review the songs in detail.

ACT ONE 1. Regression: This is a really great entry! The hypnotherapist's voice (who spoke him, anyway?) calms you down and then there is this soft guitar part with a GREAT James LaBrie on Vocals. 2. Overture 1928: THIS SONG RULES!!! It is IMO the most DT-ish song on the album! It features a lot of hidden and obvious (the first three chords in the beginning) references to Met.1. It just has the typical DT-Sound (high melodic guitar with great drums and piano in background - as heard on such great songs as Met.1, Learning to Live and The Darkest Of Winters) 3. Strange Deja-Vu: The Song with the best Chorus on the whole album! "I just can't help myself..." makes you want to jump through the room, your body twitching in audiophile orgasms. In the end, it gets a bit heavier (I always liked the less heavier songs better), but that doesn't matter. 4. Through my Words: We're settling down again. There's not really much to say about this intro to 'Fatal Tragedy'. 5. Fatal Tragedy: Now comes the part of the album which I didn't like at first, but have learned to like now. Heavy guitars (you know what I mean by heavy: Like in 'Lie') and an ever repeating riff in 4/4. This gets (somehow) annoying when you are listening to the CD over headphones and really concentrate on the music. Then there is the chorus, which brings the unregular part of DT back (YOU ARE FUCKING AMAZING, MIKE!!!!), the scheme carries on and in the end the song gets a bit messy... but it's still good. 6. Beyond this Life: This Song kicks ass! Great Drums again and the best song on the album concerning atmosphere and change of 'tenor'. Except for the part 'Had a violent struggle(...) losing you', which is just to confusing to follow IMHO, this song is cool and worth every second of its 11:22. (I have always loved the long songs! ACoS, Trial of Tears and Learning to Live are the best!) 7. Through her eyes: Come on, we have heard this song before! It was on the bands last album only that it was called 'Hollow Years'. If you compare rhythm and melody of the first two lines:

She ne ver really had a chance, on that fateful moonlit night She's just the kind of girl, you hear a bout

I mean, it's good and all and it gets better in the end and not as repetitive as Hollow Years, but it is IMHO the weakest song on the album. And then there's the woman's voice in the beginning.... I DON'T GET IT? IF you already get a female solo- ist to sing on the album, why do you give her some 'mmmm' and 'oooh...' on two songs instead of letting her SING VICTORIAS PARTS OF THE LYRICS?! Think about it, wouldn't that have been cool?

ACT 2: 8. Home: This song is good and an excellent choice for a single, but the intro is a bit long. It takes you more than two minutes before the song actually starts. It also has the aspect I moaned about in 'Fatal Tragedy'. And the part in the middle with the different sounds on the left and right speaker... it's important for the storyline but it bores you when you listen to it - sorry! In the end the whole soloing gets just so weird my head hurts when hearing that. A clear structure becomes nothing more than a scene from my memory, but still, if you want the best musicians in the world: Listen to DT! In the end, you actually think, Metropolis Part 1 starts, but 9. The Dance of Eternity: a big boom destroys your thoughts! Then you think: Hey, the freaking CD is broken, but then you realize, that it's only DT taking you on a quick tour through Metropolis' past. This song is just great if you look at versatility. That little ragtime piece in between makes you open your mouth, close it again and kiss the cover. How do you actually get those kinds of ideas, thanks Jordan! One of the best songs on the album, if you don't look at it as a whole, which I am clearly not doing at the moment. 10. One last Time: IMO there is nothing special about this song, except that it makes great use of atmosphere and changing between slow and fast just as in 'BTL'. 11. The Spirit Carries On: This Album needed a great ballad and here it is. I was tempted to say that it's a second ' Anna Lee' but it's a thousand times better, especially in the end. When they play it at the concert, I think we should all get out our lighters, wave them and sing: "If we come home tomorrow, we'll be allright, because we believe, that when we are gone, DT will carry on!" 12. Finally Free: THE SONG on the album. A great melody that really makes you think of being finally free. INCREDIBLE drumming in the end (This man is not human) and a great but still confusing outtro that makes you yearn for more! But you can get more, if you just hit 'play' again, hear the album another time and discover more facets of this incredible masterpiece.

There are a few 'this could've been done better' parts in this review and if it sounds too negative, I didn't mean it. SFaM is a G*R*E*A*T Album. I would give it a 9.7 out of 10. But Images and Words is better, it is 10 out of 10. SFaM just doesn't have the melodic genius of a PMU, TTT, Surrounded, Met1 or LTL. That's j ust my opinion. I can't wait to see you rip me apart ;). Until then, keep on jamming. I hope you had fun reading my review

Why didn't they use a female vocalist for Victoria?

Because all we hear of her is through Nicholas's regressions. Therefore, it is Victoria speaking _through_ Nicholas, and hence James' voice is perfect.

I'm finally almost done listening to the entire new cd for the first time, no thanks to cdnow, the headphones that died on me this morning at work, and too many interruptions and phone calls. I really need to listen to this at home. I did hear parts of the cd last night at the signing on LI. That was a really great experience; although I thought I'd recognize more ppl there, some ppl on line just didn't want to talk, and I really couldn't think of what to say to the band and whatever I did end up saying probably was uncomprehensive :) .. I think the band will be on Saturday Night Rocks this wknd, the only music show left on WNEW 102.7 I still hate the fact that they went talk, but that's another story. Glad to see some good discussions going on here. -Rachel

that is a little known V-chip. it serves a purpose, it keeps the musically illeterate from understanding the intensity, casts avote in every presidential election, and is Y2K compliant. no, just kidding, I believe it is a security thing

That's funny! What's really strange watching your nation's President speaking on television ... Expecting to catch a glimpse of the girl under the podium. Ala "Police Academy."

Ok what i believe is that they took the broadcast from any JFK Jr coverage, and used it on the album, but not to represent the JFK Jr tragedy, but the tragedy surrounding the US senator.....and that could be set anytime in the particular modern time.

It would be cool, but it would require a lot of dough to make it look as good as the GNR videos, if not, it would look verrrrry cheesy. Also, in last night's interview, portnoy mentioned that the money theyd spent on "single" videos, theyd rather spend it on long form/live videos, because afterall DT isnt a "single" band.
