So thjere is this lady singing Indian type of things on the first tracks
.. Some say its Malay, some said Singaporean language ... so what it'll
be? In the liner notes she isn't mentioned, nor in the each song
line-up!
And just WHERE is that Japanese guest guitarist on ASIAN SKY, what is
the part he plays? I can't notice.
Well, Vai certainly continues to explore in his music, and I like it so
far! At least Fire Garden and Ultra Zone kicks Crystal Planet ass all
over the place! :)

Hey cool!! My all time favorite album!!
Did you know Sieges even does not exist anymore? And that the Holzwarth brothers teamed up with Markus Steffen again? They are looking for a singer.
I feel rather confused about this. Since A Sense of Change is my all time favorite, should I be happy of sad???

I was wondering if anybody knows if Jordan will be using a tiered keyboard setup for Dream Theater live shows? As we all know, Kevin used three onstage, and Derek was up to four by the end of the "Touring into Infinity" shows, so I was wondering how Jordan will compensate for the multilayered approach that Kevin and Derek had going. Perhaps someone who saw the Korean festival show can give us a clue? Also, has anybody played/own the Yamaha John Myung signature six-string? I've been trying like hell to find one to try, but no store in my area will stock it. If so, what are your impressions?

well, I thought that my last post was clear, but since at least one person misunderstood it(Haschkeks) I'd like to clarify that 'no spoilers' meant no spoilers. It was rather a dark prophecy of the time beginning two weeks after the release, when the bitching starts. I guess I wasn't too successful at being sarcastic. I have not seen the cover, hell, I don't even know the tracklist, yet. And I don't want to know. Take care, schnipp

Hey fuckers!
Listen, if you have to do this shit, please take it to private email. And 15 Marks = $ 9 is a little too much for a blank CD and postage, in my so very humble opinion.
For the lady who asked how to legally obtain a promo copy of the album, call your local record company office (Elektra, in this case), speak to the people in the promotion dpt and they will hopefully help you out. They usually prioritize the major magazines and papers, but if you get hold of someone nice it'll probably be okay, but whatever you do - don't post about the album here!
Oh yes, Q2K is quite awful. It's really a tragedy... :-(

Hey there

I own a Yamaha RBX6JM since early July. I haven't played many bass guitars before, but I'm very happy with the Myung model. It plays really well, the narrower string spacing (compared to usual 6-strings) is very handy if you switch from 4 to 6 strings. The neck is very long which makes for some pretty long ways for the left hand, but it's not too bad. Btw, it's pretty massive and heavy (about 10lbs) and you'll need a 9V-battery to get some sound from it :) And of course, it looks just great with that infinity symbol on the fretboard.
I paid around $830 for mine which was a really, really good price. If you can get one for a comparably low price (the RBX6JM isn't too expensive to start with), I'd definitely recommend it!
I hope that helps ... I'm not experienced enough to give you much more detailed info ...

To me, these two statements contradict each other. (no such thing as knowing a 'true' sine wave in nature, what with noise, measurement error, quantum uncertainty.. people's difference in opinion..)
This is not to say I disagree that present digital lacks a certain 'something'. :)
The "right" sort of distortion and noise, perhaps. Not to mention good old analog reliability..
> Analog, at this time, is FAR more capable > of capturing the original event and reproducing it while retaining all of the > artifacts, including the harmonics. Digital "samples" an analog source and > does a fairly good job of reconstructing the original signal.
Ah, shades of the old "18 kHz sawtooth wave" argument. :)
Whenever this pops up, it is instructive to ask two questions:
1. What does an 18 kHz sawtooth wave look like after it's been passed thru the RIAA EQ, engraving amplifier, engraving transducer, engraving needle, matrix, vinyl, mechanical movement of needle, pickup, RIAA EQ, and amplification?
The answer is "not pretty either." :) And that's electrical signal, before any loudspeakers.
2. If we for argument's sake bypass the (EXTREMELY non-linear) "transducer->sound pressure->ear->cochlea->auditory nerve" chain... if you would be able to feed a pure 18kHz sawtooth wave (up to the infinite-th harmonic) into your brain, how different would it be percieved as opposed to the band-limited version? With a 300 MHz band limit instead of the 22 kHz of the CD, would sad music be sadder, bombastic music bombastikcer, complicated music complicateder, and beautiful music beautifuller? Now, to me the extended-bandwidth movement sounds just like another ruse for the industry to repackage and resell back catalog -- once again. :) Call me cynical... just my point of view.. not to say striving for aural perfection is a bad thing. But different people have different standards and limits. And the worst home stereo component is most often the SPEAKERS!! Not the 96 dB/22 kHz CD transmission medium or their collection of CDs.
It's also instructive to imagine all the abuses of stereophile ideals that *most definitely* occur during the recording of a normal rock record. (thank goodness!)
> Cassettes suck. MP3s, at this time, are worse.
.....well, disregarding the sound of them for a moment, MP3's of course are "a little" easier to attach to email.
> I will never upgrade my > cassette deck, I don't take the format seriously. For someone that needs > a convenient, inexpensive method of recording music, cassettes are fine. > A GOOD one demands an investment, but the media is cheap.
I use Minidisc nowadays, and can really recommend that as a very good workhorse replacement for the compact cassette. To make a rough mix of something to a cassette is to me a more complicated procedure than to make it to a CDR..
> The recording industry is really pushing digital because it's much easier > to manipulate things in the digital domain. It's all about time and money.
Yes. And time is money, so it's all about money, really!
The CD gave the industry a well-needed infusion of consumer cash after the compact cassette bloodbath.
For one, CDs enabled the industry to reissue old catalog LPs. Old masters, new revenue. Also, they charged more for CDs than LPs initially because it was percieved as a "high end format", even though CDs quickly became cheaper to make. LPs disappeared, CD quality became mainstream, but the high prices stuck. Go figure!! :)
Artists get paid proportionate to the CD price, so who am I to complain? :) But honestly, CD prices are very high..
[majesty list] I've been reading lots of posts about this policy of disallowing any advance discussion of the new DT record. Things like: people getting unsubscribed if they mention the new record here, or even on IRC.
Does that mean I get booted off if I talk about it on a cell phone? Have you all finally gone completely mad!? Yes? Well, actually maybe that's good! Congratulations and welcome! :)
There are copies here in Europe already. I especially liked the heartfelt sixth-note rendition of "S)Bäkkijärven Polkka" played on dog food can, tuned percussion and alp horn (included as Finnish bonus track, I heard it and it rocks mightily)

Yes, that is pretty much the story...
Although I always seem to miss their shows, I know that they are a cover band playing some classic rock and blues covers. But its not a serious gig. Its basically the band members having a good time. They still play Long Island from time to time and Al Pitrelli is still in the band. Derek is no longer playing with them due to the fact he is on the West Coast and EM is stationed on the East and the rest of the members change every so often.

I only have a couple of Jonas Hellborg CDs, one being 'Octave of the Holy Innocents', with Buckethead and Michal Shrieve...... this is a damn fine album! All on acoustic guitars and acoustic bass (and acoustic drums, hehe)..... the production is a little lack-lustre, just in my opinion, but the playing shines through. Very different groove for Buckethead, but a nice one, nonetheless. Buy! The other Jonas Hellborg CD I have is 'Time Is The Enemy' with Shawn Lane, and a drummer whose name escapes me at this time. This one is also a good listen, a lot more jam-oriented, lotsa big solos, stacks of Shawn soloing (some nice stuff, too!).... I prefer 'Octave......' as this one does tend to meander a little. And there you go.

I know we're not adhering to a mute rule about the new album, but man, some of you should REALLY consider the fact that what you're saying can dramatically color and modify someone's initial reaction to the album and stuff. I know, this seems like "Why would that matter?" but man, I know I would have been pissed off if I had read one of the shorter posts in the last jam before hearing the album.
I have a WHOLE lot to say about this album, but I'm trying to respect others in not sharing my insights. Why? Because I think anyone who gets the album ahead of time has a responsibility; it's not fair for me to say "I think song 3 has a HUGE Hootie and the Blowfish vibe going on... minus some of the fishblowing." because that just might run through your mind when you hear it for the first time.
There are comparisons and comments to be made. Let's make them when EVERYONE has had a chance to crank it up on their players.

Later this week, <A HREF="http://pages.prodigy.net/nightrangr/detritus.html">Detritus</A>, a leading online rock newsweekly, will post an exclusive interview with James. He talks in-depth about Mullmuzzler, and has some interesting things to say about the new DT record and what it was like replacing a keyboardist.
Here's an outtake I thought would be fitting, this being read via e-mail and all:
"I just bought a Packard Bell so I'm going through this whole shit right now, installing Windows 98--crap like that. It's new to me because I had a Mac before this, and I wanted to go PC just 'cause, sooner or later, my kids'll be in school, and everything is pretty well PC these days. Just to alleviate some confusion in some areas for them, I'll go PC now."
Of course, there's *much* more interesting information contained in the interview, so please check it out later this week.
Thanks, Clay
