Stop the train! Stop the presses! I beat out Korg in the MFP list! I
didn't think that it was a feat possible. WOW! No.. seriously.. I can die
    now.

those that supported me during this particularly difficult time. I want you
all to know that this award goes to all of you, my fans! I'd like to thank
my producer Skadz and oh yeah.. the most important people.. the little
people that helped me along the way. My first grade teacher Ms. Predergast,
thank you for sticking by me.. I knew that I would master my ABC's!"

Now.. what I am truly waiting for is for Korg to write back to this silly
post with something even more witty and more senseless than my post. : )

If nobody wants it by this Friday.. its going on EBay. You can find it

I just visited www.johnpetrucci.com and found him selling his old guitars
he used in i&w and awake tours. Isn't those prices pretty high?
I mean, $5000 for a Ibanez UV or $5000 for a JPM100 (first of 'em!)

    Hello Jammers,

With all of the synth talk out here lately, I thought I'd throw in a little
    question for
all you ytse-keyboard wizards. I'm thinking of buying myself a synth module
to use with my PC. For the moment I'm using a Roland Groovebox which I
originally used as a drumcomputer to practice my guitar playing. I think it's
fine for this purpose, but I don't really like it as a sound module.
Any recommendations for a good, solid module with a good piano and string
    section
    are welcome.

    Thanks

Just got back from London, having seen Spock's Beard there, and in Amsterdam earlier in the week too.

Pure brilliance! The Amsterdam gig was good, despite the lack of any sings of liveliness or responsiveness from the boring audience, but I thought the London show was much, much better. I was genuinely surprised at the attendance; I'd been having visions of only 10 people being there, since this country is notorious for its crap taste in music, but the LA2 seemed to be quite full. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to the actual attendance figure?

Great sound, great light show (especially during The Light, unsurprisingly!), and stunning performances from all five band members. There were moments - during June, Go The Way You Go and The Light in particular - when I truly believed I was in heaven. I have never, ever experienced anything like it. This was musical perfection.

I also had the privilege of meeting up again with fellow ytsejammers Adrian, Chloe, Jeremy and Charlie, and of being introduced to Ashley. I trust you all enjoyed the show as much as I did. :-) Apparently there were a few celebrities there, but even if I'd seen them, I wouldn't have recognised them. Oh well, I won't let that worry me. :-)

By chance, I happened to bump into someone I recognised - Tom, from Edinburgh - who seems to be at every DT gig I go to. Prior to the gig, he'd never even heard of Spock's Beard, but afterwards, he told me he'd been "blown away".

I'm actually on the verge on conceding that this was the best concert I have ever seen (and that does include six Dream Theater concerts). I'll let it settle for a couple of weeks before I finally decide, though. :-)

I have a few thoughts on the digital/analogue debate. Surely analogue recordings *do* have a limited resolution, and therefore cannot perfectly reproduce sounds? Their resolution depends on the number of magnetic particles (on the surface of the tape) which zoom past the recording head in a second, compared to the number of digital samples per second on a CD.

Would anyone like to guess the frequency at which a digital sample would have to be taken in order to compete with the natural physical resolution of analogue tape? Hundreds of kHz? MHz? GHz?

Wow, that guy is even more talented than I thought. I seem to remember on 5YIALT that Derek had two keyboard set ups. I can't wait to hear some new DT live shows. Speaking of which, when are DT playing concert dates? Some time this month obviously, but what are some exact dates? I can't find any on UACM.

According to Jordan's web page: "LIVE- I've been using ONE (1) 2500 only - with no other external modules or effects. For Dream Theater my plan is to use that keyboard PLUS my 2500 Rack. This will enable me to keep one of the instruments in the KB3 mode (which is an awesome Hammond simulation) while the other instrument performs everything else."

Sounds impressive, I'm excited! With the right programming, you can do a lot more on one K2500 than on two or three or four other synthesizers. In Jordan's instructional video, he set up a number of different "zones" (not the technical term) of keys. He showed an example section of an RPM song: He played the bass line with his left hand, and the lead with his right. He held down his left pinky on a note, which repeated a rhythmic pattern over and over. And when he played a certain note in the lead, the keyboard would play some kind of sound effect just in time. Pretty impressive stuff, if you know how to set it all up.

    AZAZELLO - "Wake Me Up" Demo RUSSIA Rating: * * * * 1999 Time: 16 minutes

Azazello are: Alexander Kulak - Guitars, Vocals Idris Faridonoff - Drums Dima Bakay - Bass Vitos Afanasev - Keyboards

Some weeks ago I received a new demo from the Russian prog metal band Azazello. They released a CD in 1998 called "The Black Day". This demo contains only one composition, "Wake Me Up", but instead it's a 16 minutes long epic track. "Wake Me Up" follows the same musical direction as their debut CD.

Azazello's biggest influence is Dream Theater. They're also influenced by bands such as Symphony X, Kansas, Marillion, Queensryche and Gorky Park to name a few. I think that you can hear their influences quite clear in their music. It's quite intricate with many tempo changes and lengthy instrumental passages.

I guess that it can be quite hard to reach outside Russia with their music. It isn't that often you get to hear a Russian band, whatever the genre is. However, Russia is a very big country and if they have their success there, the market must be quite big enough.

The guitarist and vocalist Alexandr Kulak is also working on a solo album, projects name "Kulak", with songs that are simpler than Azazello's.

I have said it before and I'll say it again, Azazello is worth a breakthrough, even outside Russia. Recommended!

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

    ALEXANDR KULAK - Kulak RUSSIA Rating: * * * 1999

This is a demo of the forthcoming solo album from the guitarist and vocalist in the Russian prog metal band Azazello. This solo project's name is "Kulak". The songs on this album are rather simple compared to Azazello's work.

Alexandr is a good guitarist and composer, but his vocals don't reach the same high standard as for example James La Brie (Dream Theater) and Geoff Tate (Queensryche). Maybe that's too much to ask for, but I can imagine what a great combination Azazello's musical skills and Alexandr Kulak's compositions could be with a singer in world-class.

All in all this is a good solo album, even though I consider Azazello's work to be slightly better than Alexandr's solo work. However it's recommended if you're interested to hear some Russian prog metal / rock for a change.

Azazello is also working on a new album and have finished one composition called "Wake Me Up", a 16 minutes long epic masterpiece.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------ FROM THE ARCHIVE: ------------------------------------------------------------------

    AZAZELLO - '98 RUSSIA Rating: * * * February 1998 VOLOS REC.

Azazello is: Alexander Kulak - Guitars, Vocals Idris Faridonoff - Drums Dima Bakay - Bass Vitos Afanasev - Keyboards

This is the first Prog-Metal band I've heard from Russia. It's nice to hear that this kind of music is played in every corner of the world, and not only in Sweden, Germany, Japan and America. I don't know how many Prog-Metal bands there is in Russia, but Azazello have to be one of the premier bands there. They're are all quite good musicians and their music is high quality too.

As with the majority of other Prog Metal bands, Azazello's biggest influence is Dream Theater. They're also influenced by bands such as Symphony X, Kansas, Marillion, Queensryche and Gorky Park to name a few. The main different is that Azazello's album has been recorded in the Russian language. Russia is a very big country so they have chosen to sing in Russian. I guess that it's very hard to reach outside their homeland too, so why bother to sing in English. It doesn't bother me though, because the music stands out for itself.

The recordings are made in a cheap studio, so the sound quality is suffering a bit from that. But all in all, this is a very good album with good musicians, and I think that if they only get a chance, they would surely make it big outside Russia too.

If you're into Prog Metal bands such as Dream Theater, and are brave enough to try out the Russian alternative, I recommend you to give this album a try. Unfortunately I don't have a clue how to get this album, but I guess that a good start would be to send an email to band member Alexander Kulak: a_kulak@hotmail.com

Entrepreneurs on this list, eh? People already selling illegal copies of the album as well as promos (I believe that's illegal too) on E-Bay? Hmm. I wonder if anyone's dumb enough to buy. Anyone who would pay, when they could just put in a little effort and find tracks online (if you want it that bad... but I recommend hearing it all at once!) almost deserves to be scammed. But Maddy informs me that EBay will cancel auctions of illegal materials (bootlegs and cdrs of albums can be cancelled) if anyone puts in the effort. So I guess at the very least, if you don't like the price, you can kill the entire auction. :)

Don't pay for SFaM until you're buying the real thing! (My personal, humble recommendation... not an order, by any means. :)

    Hey all,

I made a CD-R of all the FII outtakes a ways back, but I couldn't get all the songs in a good quality recording.

Here's what I have, let me know if I missed any!

    1) The Way it Used to Be 2) Cover My Eyes 3) Speak to Me 4) Where Are You Now 5) Raise the Knife 6) You Or Me (German version of You Not Me, somewhat different)

Okay, the thing that gets me is that the best of those songs, by far (IMO), are tracks 2, 4, and 5 above. But those are also the songs I only have so-so quality recordings of! (the others are CD quality!)

My 'Cover My Eyes' recording is supposedly a nice 128/44 MP3, but the sound is really noisy with a bad mix, it very well may have been from a boot (they played a recording of that song before and after their set over the PA on the FII tour). Is there a good clean copy of that song (the electric version, NOT the fan club show acoustic version) that is available for download?

My 'Where Are You Now' and 'Raise the Knife' are both bad boots I got off of Real Audio streams. It could be the boot, or it could be the compression of the Real Audio (probably both). Are there studio versions of these songs available on EP or for download?

I don't mean to bypass the band's EPs, as some of the songs above appear on them. But the tracks I'm looking for are not being sold or put on the new album, so they appear to be 'lost tracks'.

Also, does anyone know why those three tracks (2,4,5) didn't make FII? They blow away a lot of the FII stuff!! Cover My Eyes would have been a great radio single.

    Can anyone help me out?

    Thanks!

    Adam Sanford

P.S. I had a burner in my old lab where I worked, but I've left that job so please do not e-mail me for CD-R copies of this (I can't do it anymore!)

First off, Kevin, could you email me about getting together for QR? Steven at UNO says you are the guy on this list, so email me and we'll talk.

Does anyone own Cd's by the band Versital? I got a promo smapler from them, they sound pretty good. I was wondering if anyone owns any of the whole albums?

I couldn't agree more Chris. And you are probably refering to the post by some jackass named "Francesco Amendola" <amendo@tno.it>. I have been trying to avoid those kind of posts, but I was not quick enough to avoid reading it. Yes, I was pissed. I don't think anyone could have said ANYTHING else that would negatively "shade" my first listen of the new DT more than that.

I would have rather seen the entire list of songs, lyrics, tabs, sheet music, cover art and detailed explanation from all of the band members on why they played each note.

A big "thank you" goes out to "Francesco Amendola" <amendo@tno.it> for that quick review.

    my $.02, BH
