    Hey all..
I'm going to keep this short and generic. I'm not going to give details
about the style, grace and depth of the new single by DT.
However, for those of you who haven't heard the new single "Home" on the
radio, DT has really outdone themselves this time. This song fucking rocks!
I cannot wait to get this album.. it is preordered from CDNow. All I have
    to do is wait.
However, if you'd like a small tidbit of a sample of the newest single,
go to www.hardradio.com they have it there! Anxiously awaiting Oct 26!!

    Hey all,
Before I go to bed, I wanted to put something on the auction block. I
have here a copy of Megadeth "Risk" unopened, still in the original CD Now
box. Bidding will start at $9.00 (plus shipping$1 or $2) CD Now
accidentally sent it to me, and I'd rather just sell it to someone and make
back my money and maybe a couple of bucks. Best bid will win. I paid
    $14.95 with shipping for it!
On another Megadeth related note, I work as a referee for the Intramural
Sports program here at Oklahoma State University. I was checking ID's to be
sure that the people playing on the teams were eligible to play.. anyways
upon checking ID's I checked on that said "Mathew Ellefson" I said "oh of
Megadeth right?" just as a joke.. and he said, "No, thats my cousin" Small
world. : ) He says that he keeps in touch with his cousin. I didn't get
to talk anymore because it would look bad if a referee was holding a private
conversation with a player, know what I mean? Just thought that I would
share that with all of you.

Being a HUGE Ray Alder fan, I picked up "Engine" as soon as it was released. I've got some mixed feelings about this disc... First off, the lyrics are painfully generic. My second bitch would have to be the drumming, I find it uninteresting. In the albums defense I have to say that there are some truly good tunes on this disc. Joey Vera lays down a good foundation as well as some interesting grooves. Bernie Versailles is a fairly straight forward, competent, metal guitarist. There is nothing really special or unusual about his playing. IMHO

I'm going to refrain from commenting on Ray Alder's vocals at this time. I need some time for this sink in before I pass judgment. It certainly isn't bad, just different.

What's got me shaking my head is the recording... I first auditioned it in my van. The van has a damn nice sounding system for automotive gear. It sounded terrible! Really cold, harsh, and dirty. That's quite the opposite from the systems signature sound, which leans towards the warm side. Then I played the disc in the living room system, it didn't sound much better.

Out come the big guns! I went downstairs where by big system lurks, stuck in the disc and much to my surprise it took on an erie realism. But there was something bothering me, I couldn't quite figure out what this familiar sound was. Then at the beginning of one of the tunes it became clearly audible... Bernie has a damaged speaker in his cabinet! The voice coil in on of his drivers has been overheated enough to bubble up the enameling on the voice coil windings and distort the form of the coil enough so it could cause mechanical noise by rubbing on the motor structure. I know this sound all too well. I've had to send my Altec drivers in for factory rebuilds more than once because of this. I can't believe they didn't fix this prior to the recording.

What was causing the distortion on the other systems was also revealed. This recording has some serious subsonics. More than it should. The distortion I was hearing on the other systems was the limitations of the speakers becoming painfully obvious as they attempted the impossible. With the woofer cones violently being yanked about, there was so much cone break up they could no longer properly reproduce the sound within their intended range. This only applies to louder volumes, at low volumes all the systems sounded OK, but still a little fuzzy abound the edges.

The big system smiled and proceeded to give local seismologists something to worry about...

FYI: Fortunately, most portable systems have a subsonic filter so they can be played fairly loud without having woofer "pop" when playing demanding material. Engine should behave pretty good on this gear.

Unfortunately, "the frequencies of ambient noise" are also the frequencies of ambient musicians. :) An EQ can not remove noise in a selected frequency group without removing the music residing in the same frequency range. Attempting to remove the noise would probably do more harm than good. I would highly recommend you keep that recording as far from your computer as possible. Even if you were to keep the sound card out of the equation by using a MIDI interface between the computer and the DAT machine, unless the computer gear was designed for that application, the computer environment could open the flood gates for a host of new noises.

    >Keep in mind that this performance space is VERY live and the microphone >is a single stereo boom mic hanging from the ceiling that points directly >at the front of the stage of our recital hall.

Can this be remedied? What kind of access do you have to the building and audio equipment? What is the microphone quality and type? Is the mic designed for that application? Can other mics be used nearfield for your purposes?

    >If anybody knows, it's you audiophiles. I was also wondering if you might >know what kinds of equalization I can give it to get a more >realistic-sounding feel. I could send a portion of the file so that you >could get an idea of what kind of sound it would be, if you like.

Stick your head where the mic is and listen to the performance from the mics perspective. That's the best is CAN be. Microphone placement is the key to a good recording.

I would like to hear what you have to work with. You could send something via an e-mail attachment as long as the file size is reasonable. (under 2 megs) You could also upload it to the net and post the link.

Thanks. Ahem.... well it is a digital transfer. Rip, burn, re-rip and do a bitcompare. At worst you'll find they're offset as some recording programs automatically add space at the beginning of tracks. As per the original questions: No, there is no data lost, No, you will not suffer from making multiple generation copies (particularly as long as you rip before burning instead of doing direct copies), No, there is no loss in ripping to a wav. There. I think I've rebutted your thoughtful and intelligent argument. As to the other part, specifically whether they sound different, here's what Al says:

    >The SPDIF format (Sony-Phillips-Digital-lnter-Face) is the standard by which >all data is transmitted from one component to another. Encoded in a single >stream of data are many separate pieces of information including music, timing .. A whole lot of shit I don't really understand .. >creates JITTER, the most unfriendly phenomenon in digital audio equipment. >Sound will be harsh and Stone Cold. The sound stage is narrow, and uninteresting. >Music becomes what is known as: DIGITAL!

So I've heard that before, but here he's pretty much talking about consumer grade cd players in general. In fact it's in response to a question about two pressed cd's getting out of sync. I've yet to see convincing evidence that CD-R's exacerbate this condition, although I suppose it might depend on your cd-r drive.

Furthermore, a question for the electronics junkies (Al): don't they use buffers!?!?! How fucking stupid are these people that they can't make a $300 (admittedly consumer grade) cd player do what a $20 cd-rom drive does: buffer the data and send it out on an as-needed basis. There would still be jitter in terms of the clock that calls data out of the buffer, but there would be no jitter introduced by the disc itself. I find it hard to believe that this isn't being done, but then I don't really know anything about the inner working of stereo equipment, so I'll bow to your knowledge.

    >From: Brian Hansen <bhansen10@yahoo.com> > >And how about Neil's old boss/bandmate Carlos Santana? >Anyone have his new disc? I take it he had a different >guest vocalist on every song. I've heard the single >"Smooth" and really liked it... >

Smooth is a killer song, as are a few others on the disc. It it full of guest stars, and unfortunately many of the songs sound more like the guest than Santana. I say unfortunately because most of the guests suck ass. Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews and Rob Thomas are notable exceptions. It's a decent disc, but not nearly as good as I had hoped for. It's unfortunate that Santana didn't just get together with Thomas for the whole album. That's probably the coolest song either one of them have ever done.

I just found a place to get some Jens Johansson cds for less than Laser's Edge, More Metal or CDNow. The place is at http://www.netbeat.com and they have Ten Seasons for $12.72 and The Last Viking for 16.94 plus about $5 shipping.

I'm also looking for The Johansson Brothers-s/t and Johansson-Sonic Winter. Any help?

I just wondered if anyone knew the birthdates of Jordan and Derek? I've been trying to look for them, but there's no info to be found. I also want to repeat my wish. If anyone has a copy of the rudess experiment for sale, please e-mail me! I'm sorry to repeat myself, but I'm getting pretty desperate here...

Try this.... RIGHT-CLICK on that link and try the "Save As" feature.... that should download the file to your desktop, or wherever you specify it save to... then run it on your system locally without the delay from the web.

If that doesn't work, try it a few more times the normal left-click way... the traffic might have been heavy when you originally tried to hear it..

    Hi!

The complete album title was in the Swedish music industry magazine, MI, a couple of weeks ago, as well. I deserve some cred for not letting y'all know, right?

For my money this whole veil-scheme could probably be a tribute from Mike to the late great Stanley Kubrick, I just have that feeling.

Swedish jammers, listen to PROG-O-RAMA, this coming Sunday night 0100 AM (95,3 MHz), for details on the listening party, planned for Stockholm around the 20th of October.

Last night I got to see Ravi Shankar, and it was easily the most amazing show i've ever been to (sorry, DT). Anyway, his daughter, Anoushka, played the first few ragas, and I noticed that in the raga "Kiriwani" she kept returning to a "catch phrase" that's eerily similar to the main melidic line of "ytsejam". I got home and listened to her CD, and it was there too. But another version of Kiriwani (from Ravi's "Portrait of Genius" CD) didn't have that phrase in it. I'm not an expert on indian music, so I'm not sure if that prase is a built in part of "Kiriwani" or just a phrase that Anoushka likes to use when she plays it, but if it is part of the traditional raga, i'd be interested to know if DT consciously used it, or if it's just a coincidence...(it's funny, I always thought "ytsejam" would sound great on sitar =^) -Banjoman

What's a Dream Theater and why are you posting about it on the gay sex bulletin board?

As for Derek, I had sex with him myself. It was by accident, but with all the bodies and whipped cream, it was hard to tell one butt from the next.

I'm sure he would be more than happy to get together with you. Here's his home phone number: 407-599-5253. Give him a call and set-up a meeting...
