          Now all you need to do is turn on some pro-wrestling, slouch down on
    the couch, stick your free hand down the front of your pants, take a long
    guzzle of beer, let out a LOUD long belch (that pushes some beer-drool out
    of your mouth and onto your shirt), and tell the wife to get her bitch ass
    back in the kitchen, and make you some pie.
    Then you'll be all set!

    Brian Hansen asked about Pirahna Blues:

    No, it is nothing like his last discs, which is a bummer for me. Anybody
    who wants a truly beautiful guitar instrumental album, check out Beyond The
    Thunder. Superb emotional playing, and really pretty songs and production.

    Anyway, back to Pirahna Blues... It's basically a
    guitar/bass/drums/vocalist blues/rock band, with a very bluesy sounding
    singer, sort of in the older Bad Company vein. It's okay for what it is,
    but nothing special... Neil plays really well, but it's just bluesy songs,
    the kind of stuff you've probably heard a zillion times before. Sorry, I
    don't have the disc handy or I'd tell you the players and track listing. I
    only listened to it a few times, and then set it aside, and haven't listened
    to it in about a month.

    I also have the Santana CD, and it's pretty cool. I'm not a Santana fan by
    any means, (his playing really annoys me for some strange reason, I find it
    very stiff sounding) but I like this CD. It's got a good variety of
    material on it, and I (who am obviously a very harsh critic) can listen to
    it all the way thru without getting bored.

    Hope that helps. Just bear in mind that I really am picky about what I
    listen to. And hopefully I didn't offend anybody here:-). It's just my
    opinion, not right or wrong...

    Paul

    Message-ID: <3.0.5.32.19990929151002.00ac4140@objypop>

    What is a ribbon controller?

    Well, the modern version of them works a lot like the "glidepoint" or
    "trackpad" mouse replacement gizmos that are on a lot of laptops as well as
    add-on devices for desktop PCs. They are touch sensitive, so they transmit
    coordinate information based upon where you are touching the pad. Most
    only transmit one dimension of info, left to right. See the Z1 for more on
    that.

    Here are some keyboards that have them, where they are located, and my
    personal opinions. :)

    Korg Trinity
    Located below the pitchbend/modulation joystick. Feels okay, but the part
    you actually touch is separated form the solid piece below, so you can
    actually feel it depress slightly when you touch it. I'd be afraid that it
    would rip.

    Korg Prophecy
    On the "log" controller, above the pitch and mod wheels. Similar feel to
    the Trinity, but the whole thing can roll up and down. Difficult to
    combine pitch, mod and ribbon at once for cool effects.

    Roland JP-8000
    Located in same place as Trinity. This one has a more solid feel to it,
    much like a laptop trackpad. I own this board. :)

    Yamaha EX series (5 or 7)
    Located under the pitch, mod and mod2 wheels (notice a pattern?) larger
    than the others, but has the "separate layer feel" like the Korg Trinity.

    Korg Z1
    A strange one. This is actually a 2d device. All other ribbons are only
    linear. They just transmit left to right (and sometimes pressure) This is
    a full x/y pad, just like a computer one. Located above the pitch and mod
    wheels. Solid feel, but has bumps to find the center. Neat, but like
    prophecy hard to combine with wheel motion.

    Korg Triton
    Same place as on the Trinity, but a solid feel. I want to own this board.

    Kurzweil
    One small ribbon located under the pitch and mod wheels. Has the separate
    layers feel I don't like, and has a horizontal line down the center as a
    finger guide, I guess. The K2500 (and maybe others?) has a large (about 2
    feet long) ribbon just above the keys. It's hard to miss. Jordan uses
    this a lot for big pitch changes and massive sweeps of sound.

    Anything I miss? I know that there are some old ribbon devices that are
    separate from keyboards so you can run around stage like Keith Emerson with
    fireworks shooting out of it as you play a solo. This is the more vintage
    ribbon controller, and I don't really know a lot about them.

    The current 'state of ytsejam' and all reminded me of a time at a remote
    site, when a project was nearing completion. Deadlines were getting
    tight and tensions were high as you'd expect. People got on each other
    about the most insignificant of things. You know, the usual (substitute
    finals week if yer still in school). It doesn't do the 'project' or
    anyone any good.

    It's funny though how the so-called smartest (self-proclaimed or
    otherwise) people, who have all the answers, have it all figured
    out....can be so fookin' stoopid sometimes! What's more amazing is how
    we ALL, at one time or another, fall into that role :)

    Enter: a guy who had his head on straight the whole time. One day, one
    of the fellow workers who worked at this remote site - not necessarily
    too high in rank or even all that critical to the project - handed me
    the following. I have never forgotten that day nor the impact it made on
    my ability to cope with the deadlines. I have it hanging in my office.

    Substituting various words (like 'project') for the appropriate
    term/phrase/whatever in the ytsecontext, maybe you find it works here,
    too. For me, it's scary how close some of these parallel (for example,
    taking turns to give advice on which CDs from a particular group to
    start with based on who happens to be familiar with said group).

    Here in Ytseland as some wait for that new thing, some are waiting for
    the new disc while other already have it and are waiting for the live
    tour (clinic) to hopefully come to their area. It's always something,
    even if it's something different for someone other than you. In any
    event, I figure this might help to keep the boat afloat. If not, get the
    12-gauge out and take the whole flock out :)

    Don't try to analyze it too hard or find a flaw in it. That's part of
    the problem. The beauty is in just sitting back and enjoying it for what
    IT is. Whatever you do, for Ged sakes, PLEASE don't get together with
    friends, drop large quantities of LSD, and actually attempt to fly to
    prove or disprove the statements :)

    So, without further leakage on my part, I offer:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    "LESSONS FROM GEESE"
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an "uplift" for the bird
    following. By flying in a V formation, the whole flock adds 71% flying
    range than if each bird flew alone.

    LESSON:

    People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where
    they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the
    thrust of one another. (Sometime we get so focused on our own role that
    we forget the common purpose - services, development, environment).
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Whenever a goose fall out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and
    resistance of trying to fly alone, and quickly gets back into formation
    to take advantage of the "Lifting Power" of the bird immediately in
    front.
    LESSON:
    If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with
    those who are headed where we want to go.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and
    another goose flies at the point position.

    LESSON:

    It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership - with
    people, as with geese, interdependent with each other. Again, all in it
    together.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to
    keep up their speed.
    LESSON:
    We need to make sure our honking from behind is encouraging - not
    something less than helpful.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of
    formation and follow it down to help and protect him. They stay with
    the goose until it is either able to fly again or dies. They they
    launch out on their own with another formation or catch up with the
    flock.

    LESSON:

    If we have as much sense as geese, we'll stand by each other just like
    that.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      Actually, there are a couple of reasons why I decided to
      remove the #ytsejam IRC section from the official website.
      The most important reason right now is the amount of "inside
      information" that is leaking out through the IRC channel...
      It seems inappropriate to have this available on the official
      website.
      Also, UACM takes up a lot more time than it used to. The IRC
      page was created when UACM was just a personal fan site. Now
      that UACM is offical, I just don't have the time to keep up
      with the #Ytsejam updates anymore.
      The #Ytsejam IRC pages will be much better in the hands of
      Irene, who will be able to devote the time that it deserves.
    gonna release info, he said that himself. Weather this is in the form of a tracklist or a sound sample, the album HAS to be promoted some way, after all, not all DT fans are hardcore jammers, plus theres also the prospect of gaining new fans. People are taking
    Portnoy's secrecy policy and bringing it to such extremes that they
    will refuse to hear any info, even when released by the band or label
    themselves. All Im saying is - calm the fuck down people, its not
    going to spoil the album, but more than likely add fuel to the
    excitement of a new DT album! Hey, as soon as CDnow puts sound bites
    of the 1st 5 songs on their site, you can bet your ass I'll be
    listening. Does this make me any less of a hardcore fan? No, because
    Im still gonna buy the album, and Im still gonna think it kicks
    serious ass, and Im still gonna buy tix to as many DT shows as I can
    see.
    One more thing...don't try to tell me that you'd be like this if
    Portnoy didnt have the "veil of secrecy." If his choice was to
    disclose as much info as possible before the release date (like with
    FII) you'd be all over the tiniest speck of information that you
    could get your hands on. Being a hardcore fan doesnt mean obeying
    every word a band member says and then multiplying it by 100...
    I had a recital performance today that was SO good that I actually WANT to
    get a copy for myself. But as is the problem with live-recorded audio, it
    just won't be that great quality-wise. Even though it's recorded on DAT,
    I'm sure there's going to be some noise, and that's where my question
    arises.
    If I were to transfer this to my computer to work on it, is there a way I
    can isolate the frequencies of ambient noise to remove it using an EQ?
    Keep in mind that this performance space is VERY live and the microphone
    is a single stereo boom mic hanging from the ceiling that points directly
    at the front of the stage of our recital hall.
    If anybody knows, it's you audiophiles. I was also wondering if you might
    know what kinds of equalization I can give it to get a more
    realistic-sounding feel. I could send a portion of the file so that you
    could get an idea of what kind of sound it would be, if you like.
    Hey,
    I just got the new Creed CD "Human Clay." It is awesome. Very good song
    writing. They sound even better on this album then the first. They have an
    excellent song about the birth of a child that is very emotional. Also,
    there are more then a few God/religious references in their songs. Again,
    very bold for a metal artist to do this-especially on their sophomore album.
    All in all, it is outstanding. Also, I am going to the Creed show on October
    13 in Chicago. If anyone else is going please e-mail me. The show is at the
    Aragon "Brawl" Room. If anyone has seen a concert here before can you e-mail
    me and let me know what it is like. Thanks in advance. I would love to see
    these guys open for DT. They would complement each other very well. (There's
    my DT component) Can't wait til the 26th.
    See ya,
    Todd
    I know Ken's in the process of updating the Lasers Edge site to now
    include a shopping cart feature. This could be the start of that
    process.
    <SNIP> I think you should cozy up to some rich old hag. You could talk her into buying you the ultimate audiophile system so we can talk about something other than being practical. :) :)
    The conversation would go something like this:
    Chris: Al, can you hear that faint swishing sound?
    Al: Yup.
    Chris: What is it?
    Al: That's the sound of Portnoy's snare bouncing of Petrucci's testicles and being picked up by a leaky cable on Myung's rig.
    Chris: That's almost as annoying as that booger whistling in LaBrie's nose. <SNIP>
    hey, i am a long time Dream Theater fan, and i was just wondering if there was anyone else out there who has ever questioned Dereks Sherenian's sexuality.....because i have numerous gay and or bi-sexual aquaintances who are under the impression that he is either bi or gay. i myself have often dabled in the art of sex with men, and i from a personal standpoint believe that he might have some homosexual tendancies, and if he does then we certainly need to meet. and might his sexual preferance for men be a possible reason for being ousted from Dream Theater. just a thought??     I don't know for sure, but I know that LE was planning on setting up a new site complete with secure on-line ordering. They might be in the process of putting this on-line.
