who had it early doing track by track reviews of the CD. If what I know is
true, it sounds like a CD that needs to be listened in it's entirety to be
    enjoyed to it's fullest.
    >

I think you strike a good point there. I don't think there ever was a
_total_ veil of secrecy. Because if there was, there's a few things I don't
    get:
    a) there's a link to cdnow.com right on the frontpage of
www.mikeportnoy.com with no spoiler warning. The warning is on the board
over there, but not on the page where everybody enters. By now it's widely
known the title is on cdnow.com, so this is a break of secrecy by the band
    itself.
    b) I see more and more mailorders have the title exposed, both in print and
on the web... pretty impossible not to see it when you get the new update
from your favorite mailorder in print (Compact Mail in my case, not that I
mind knowing the info about the album)
    c) There are promo's floating around

Man, you really have to stick your head in the ground for six weeks if you
really don't want to know anything. These are all points that could have
been taken care of by the band and especially the label, in case a total
veil of secrecy was intended. So either it's a marketing scheme to make us
all extra hungry or some people have underestimated the power of the
    information age a little :)

SO. It's OK if Mark spoils it for you, and everyone
else who was hoping to know as little as possible,
but not OK for anyone else to do it?

I think the bottom line is this:

YOU know human nature, and YOU KNOW that people will
spoil it. If YOU want to be kept in complete dark
about the album, YOU should have the common sense
to remove yourself from the 'Jam like some have already
done. If you surf the 'Net, and surf near music sites,
or DT-related sites, you run the risk of someone
    spoiling it for you.

Humans were born to break the rules, so it's up to
YOU to take yourself out of the risk areas.

    Hey Jammers,

How about we make everybody take loyalty oaths to uphold the veil of
secrecy, then we will find out who the real DT fans are around here? Isn't
it obvious that an evil conspiracy of fans of the 'Ryche is at hand. The
oath could start out something like, "I solemnly swear to uphold the veil of
secrecy, and if I fail in the afforementioned duty, may my eyes be gouged
out, my entrails removed, and may I be killed in nasty ways". All sarcasm
aside, I just wanted to come out of lurk mode with a bang. In fact I need
to go reserve my copy of the new DT, because prog is somewhat hard to come
across here in New Orleans (unless you look in the used bins). That brings
me to my fond memories of my time so far on the 'Jam. If it wasn't for the
'jam I would have never heard about such cool bands as Crimson Glory (I came
across Transcendence for $4 used last year, great disk), Savatage, Weather
Report, Gordian Knot, Explorer's Club, Echolyn, the Dixie Dregs, Helloween,
Angra, Galactic Cowboys, the Gathering, and Gentle Giant. In other words,
the Ytsejam is the best, and even though we seem to have our arguments over
here, I think we are still one of the most tight knit mailing lists, almost
like a family. That's what is so cool about the 'Jam. So everybody be
cool, and as all of us are I am looking forward to October 26.

On an unrelated note, I am still looking for information about For Absent
Friends and Kindred Spirits. I figured out who Cynic was (I forgot about
checking my info on Gordian Knot). I had downloaded mp3s of these bands,
and am curious who they are. I am guessing For Absent Friends is inspired
by early Genesis (maybe), and I am totally at a loss about Kindred Spirits,
but the singer does not sound American.

    Later
    Kevin

P.S. If DT would ever play N.O. it would be really cool. Maybe they could
even play at Tulane University, I have been trying to get campus programming
to get them here. It is unlikely though, based on the lack of success that
DT has here. Most people either say "Who are they?" or "They suck" when I
    talk about DT.

Come on Al, you can't say that a $1300 tape deck is "bottom of the barrel analog" -- try a $10 walkman if you want to claim bottom of the barrel.

What would be more fair is to do a price to price comparison. Compare a $100 CD player to a $100 tape deck. That will show where digital is better, and that's where most of the people will be shopping. yes at the high end (and I consider your "mid-fi" to be high end, since 99% of people will never spend that kind of money) analog can be better, but most people want practical advice on what to buy, and spending thousands of dollars on stereo equipment is not practical for all but true audiophiles.

Well, in a manner of speaking, yes. Mark has direct contacts to the band. If he posts any official information, I have no problem with it being discussed. All of you people who keep ragging on me because of what I've been saying in the past couple of days are MISSING my original point: That he posted spoiler information (and at that time it WAS spoiler info) without notifying us in the first place.

    > I think the bottom line is this: > > <snip> > > Humans were born to break the rules, so it's up to YOU to take > yourself out of the risk areas.

So I have to work extra hard to make sure that *I* don't get exposed to anything while nobody else has to do their own part? How hard is it, really, to put a (SPOILER) in your subject line? As Lisa Marie said, it's netiquette and it's common courtesy. It's a two-way street here, and it's not like you get off the hook.

Why is it so difficult for you to say at the top of a post or in the subject that there might be spoiler information? You're acting like I want you to jump through hoops or light yourself on fire.

Shouldn't the subject of the above post have included the word "SPOILERS"? Wasn't this what Andrew C. was bitching about for the last few digests? If there are people asking for others to use SPOILERS in their posts about the new CD, shouldn't the band and those associated with it adhere to the same "rules"? I mean, there are people whose whole "DT experience" will be ruined by knowing the title of one of the songs on the CD, ya know.

(The above was written with tongue firmly in cheek. I have already heard the new CD and could care less if there are spoilers pointed out or not. I just find it funny how people on this list bitch and moan about the way list members post things, but contradict themselves when they say it's OK for the band to post the stuff they were bitching about)

    Take care, Adam Perkowsky

*snicker* I still don't understand why people love Kurzweil so much. Must be a pianist thing, since most of the real Kurzy lovers seem to come from classical piano backgorunds. I tried some, and as a synth controller I rate it unplayable. It doesn't have the preferred joystick style pitch/mod (only Roland and Korg actually do) and the big ribbon feels really cheap.

For me right now the "ultimate genetically superior keyboard" is the Korg Triton 76-key. If I could only have one board, that would be it. Not that I have one yet, but I'm saving ...

    Hey Gang -

Well, now that "Home" has been released to the radio, does anyone know of anywhere on the Web where I can give the song a listen, via RealAudio or MP3? I want to stress that I am NOT looking for any further spoilers here! But, the radio around here SUCKS BALLS (Albany, NY region) when it comes to heavy metal much less prog metal. I highly doubt that I will ever hear it on a local station 'round these parts. So, I was thinking that maybe some internet radio station or something may have it to listen to. I'm listening to HardRadio.COM right now, and I looked around the site, but so far - no reference to it at all. Is there anywhere out there where I can give it a listen on one hand, but on the other hand not be subjected to too many unwanted spoilers?

    Thanks a lot... Matt T.

I love playing a Kurz - and I'm a piano player. Heh. I just think it offers the most realism of any other board I've ever tried, and since I can't afford to have a piano (both cost of a GOOD piano and the space required to keep it), I'd LOVE to own a K2500.

Out of curiosity, what IS a ribbon controller? I've heard it mentioned several times on the jam and haven't seen a picture of one or know what it is. Can somebody explain what it does? And/or point me towards a picture of one?

It used to be crappy, but I saw recent reviews of the latest version and it seemed to have been improved a bit. If you really want quality, get the original Fraunhofer encoder. They invented it, after all... I think mp3producer is one of the programs that is using this encoder. Use at least 160kbps, and if you are encoding live stuff, listen carefully to see if you need an even higher bitrate. Live recordings with all the background noise contain a lot more information, and often need better encoding.

Are there any Neil Schon fans out there? I heard he has a new disc out (Pirahna Blues), has anyone heard it? Is it instrumental like his last couple, or are there vocals (and who does the singing?).

And how about Neil's old boss/bandmate Carlos Santana? Anyone have his new disc? I take it he had a different guest vocalist on every song. I've heard the single "Smooth" and really liked it...

    PLEASE,

Why the fuck do we have to discuss pro wrestling? Lets talk about the new album. Lets get psyched.

There's too many smart people around to be treated like this. Some people are followers who don't wan't to be spoiled. Remember, somebody else is making that judgement for you. Many people are afraid of being kicked off the list. Why have this list if we only have pro-wrestling to talk about? Lets all start talking about the new album.

I dare everybody to divulge the information that they know about the new album.

We know there are some people so influenced by the media. I have some advice for people who don't want to experiment and judge on their own whether they like it or not: GET A BACKBONE! THINK INDEPENDENTLY! YOU ARE HERE BECAUSE YOU LIKE DT! LETS TALK ABOUT THE ALBUM!

Who on the list coined the term "spoiler"? Whoever, you have a loyal following.

I just watched a movie, dunno the title thgouh. It is nice love story, with main actors Warren Bitty (sp?) and Annete Bening (this is the couple the movie is about).

Warren is some kind of big businessman or somehtigm, ... a richj celebrity anyway. Aunt of Warren was the famous Kathrine Hepberne.

They (Warren and Annete) meet on a ship trip. During the trip they drop by the aunt of Warren who lives on a very nice island, in a house up in the hills. They are both engaged but somehow fall on love. So bla, bla ... when they separate on a airport, both ready to meet their fiances, they make a deal that they meet some few months later on the top of the Empire State Building, and in the mean time no contact, no phhone calls, no postcards - nothing! They will meet than and see how things will develop.

What happens lately is that secretly thewy both expect this moment, Warren comes earlier and waits her .. she all thrilled and happy goes into a cab, but there is a rush hour and the cab can't get thru so she walks out and few meters after that she gets hit by a car! She becomes paralized and didn't manage to meet with him (ans she wanted to marry him). Later she don't want to see him before she gets well and star walking. Warren thinks she consciously didn't appear (ot at least he was upset of that option) and she doesn't know how do it now when she's all messed up, in hospital ... Later they DO manage to meet and it's a nice happy end. OK, I'm sure you're bored by now, but I wanted to make sure you get the movie I talk about! :)

The song I look for is:

A scene while they stay in the nice house of the aunt on the island. The aunt is playing the piano! Annete (the main actress) gets emotional and starts silently singing along. This is some of the nicest melodies I ever heard. It's ... divine. I just have to find it, if only I knew how it is called. Slow piano stuff, but VERY interesting chord changes, it just moves to more and more emotional lines ... beautiful!

Please help me out here. :) -- CyberDuke ________________________________________________

so... now that mike has spoken can we drop this?

they simply asked us not to try to start rumors or talk about it, and instead thats all we're doing. how retarded.

((like when someone says DONT THINK ABOUT PINK ELEPHANTS - whats your first thought? LOL)) anyway, lets drop this nonsense, respect their wishes, and wait patiently like friends and not rabid fans - like someone mentioned of the backstreet boys...<sigh> i hope we haven't dropped that low......

I was watching TV and for the millionth time, the preview for Mystery, Alaska came on (BTW, looks REALLY good - I like that kind of movie). The music in the background reminded me of something I'd heard before, and finally realized that it was the suite that was written for The Mighty Ducks! It's called The Mighty Ducks Suite, and it's rather remiscent of the Forrest Gump suite, although I'm pretty sure that it's by a different composer. But anyway, I was wondering if anybody had this soundtrack that could get me an MP3 of it - I just love the theme and really don't want to buy the CD for just that one piece.

Can anybody help me out? Private emails, please.
