Well, been a long time away from the 'Jam, but finally starting to
read again... Anyway, the posts about max CD-R lengths are sorta far
off... There are several manufacturers selling 80 min CD-Rs. I was
able to buy some at MicroCenter, and they have started to appear at
CompUSA and Best Buy as well... And the prices are fairly
reasonable... I bought a bunch for under $2 a piece... As far as
software goes, according to Adaptec's Easy CD Creator FAQ, they do
support 80 min CDs (from ver 3.5 on) so I would imagine that the newly
released 4.0 version does as well... (see
    http://www.adaptec.com/tools/compatibility/cdrec.html for more info).

For the uninformed (me), what are the possibilities of singles being released for the new album? If there were any, would they be released before or after the album came out? I've been a fan for a few months after FII came out, so I'm not sure what schedule the band is running on.

BOOK OF HOURS - We find your lack of faith disturbing SWEDEN Rating: * * * =BD 1998 PRIVATE CACMC 002

Book of Hours are: Mattias Reinholdsson - bass & vocals Per Broddesson - guitar & keyboards Mikael Zell - keyboards & guitar Henrik Johansson - drums & keyboards

Guest musician: Stefan Zell - vocals

Tracks: 1. Theme from "Tuntien Kirja" 2. Infinite 3. Demolition in progress 4. Den trettonde m=E5naden

The Swedish progressive symphonic metal / hard rock band Book of Hours were put together in 1996. This is a four-track demo tape, and it's their second, showing a band on the verge to a break-through.

Book of Hours influences are as diverse as Blue =D6yster Cult, Judas Priest, Helloween, Dream Theater, Pet Shop Boys, Spin Doctors, Tori Amos, Meshuggah, Van Der Graaf Generator, Gentle Giant, Bj=F6rk and Radiohead. They seem to be big Iron Maiden fans as two of their favourite albums are Bruce Dickinson's "Skunkworks" and Iron Maiden's "Piece of mind".

Their music is reminiscent to Anekdoten, and just like Anekdoten they are frequently using distorted bass. My favourite track are the final "Den trettonde m=E5naden", which got lyrics in Swedish.

I recommend this CD, especially if you're into Anekdoten.

BOOK OF HOURS - Art to the blind SWEDEN Rating: * * * * * May 1999 RECORD HEAVEN RHCD 16 Running time: 52:14

Book of Hours are: Mattias Reinholdsson - bass & vocals Per Broddesson - guitar & keyboards Henrik Johansson - drums & keyboards Mikael Zell - keyboards & guitar

Guest musician: Stefan Zell - vocals

    Tracks: 1. =C5ngloks=E5ngest (4:27) 2. Fifth dimension (7:57) 3. Infinite (5:27) 4. Endearment (6:27) 5. Infertile ground (7:46) 6. Tender contempt (5:41) 7. Fading from grey (4:47) 8. Den trettonde m=E5naden (8:45)

The Swedish progressive symphonic metal / hard rock band Book of Hours was formed in 1996. With two demo tapes behind them, Record Heaven contacted them in 1999 to release Book of Hours debut CD.

Anekdoten influences the band, and you can hear a lot of it in their music. There's also reminiscences to Dream Theater and Landberk. The distorted bass and the heavy guitars together with the strong melodies forms a high-class progressive rock. My favourite tracks are "Fifth dimension", "Infertile Ground", "Tender contempt" and the final track "Den trettonde m=E5naden", which got lyrics in Swedish.

The band did the nice cover by themselves.

This is one of the best releases so far in 1999. Strongly recommended!

Well, over this past week I have gotten quite a few shipments of CDs from CD Now. I figured that I would get some new music to listen to. I guess I'll start with: SEVENDUST "Home": The second release from a kickass band out of Atlanta. Just as dark and heavy as the previous album with more attention to details and VOCALS. Lejon (the vocalist) really opens up and does a lot less growling on this album than he did in the past. I highly recommend this album if you are into really dark, bass-heavy grit you teeth metal. Morgan Rose is a great drummer and seems to have expanded his ability 2 fold since the last album. I guess touring and practice will do that. COAL CHAMBER "Chamber Music": Well, unfortunately I cannot give this the same review as I gave Sevendust. This follow up album to the self titled is a disappointment. In fact, it reminds me a lot of the disappointment that I had with Korn's "Life is Peachy" album. Terrible. It has its good moments and has some songs that show some promise if re-written. Coal Chamber has a Korn type following and this album will be a disappointment to even the most endearing Coal Chamber fan. It is unfortunate because this album was highly anticipated by me. They always say that the "sophomore slump" is always found with bands that have hit debut album. This couldn't be more true for "Chamber Music" A good point on this album is Coal Chambers guest vocalist, OZZY. CC does a cover with Ozzy of "Shock the Monkey" which is fun, but a terrible cover. Its not amazing that they got Ozzy to perform on the album because Ozzy's wife Sharon is CC's manager. I bought more albums from CD Now, but they aren't new. I got Ozzy's "Ozzmosis" album which I have greatly enjoyed. I've heard it many times, but I finally decided to buy it. Also, if you are into good hard rock, I highly suggest picking up Zakk Wylde's BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. Well worth the money. Metal Edge online reports that Zakk is meeting with fellow Ozzy alumni Mike Inez to re-record a version of No More Tears called No More Tears 2000, and will be featured on a re-release of the current BLS album. Thats it for now. Later, J Jeremy Kube Oklahoma State University Fire Protection and Safety Engineering Technology Major inflammabl@aol.com kube@fullnet.net "Sex is Death, Death is Sex. Jon, I agree that Tiles kicks ass, and you're right that you need their other discs (especially "Fence the Clear"). However, I don't see where you're seeing any comparisons to Superior and Pain of Salvation! I'm not dogging you on this, I'm just curious if you can expand on your thoughts.

    Hey All ...

So, we moved :) I mentioned it a couple of times in the past and then went to Europe and moved and did all kinds of fun stuff like that and then the guys over at AX informed me that they were taking the server down immediately, so the move was not as smooth as I had hoped. I did make sure to get personal mails out to everyone on the list as of the day before the server went 100% down, so everyone should have the info.

As of Sunday evening, we have 698 subscribers. We had almost 1600 before the system moved (and over 200 of my mails bounced, GRRRR), so I would say we will continue growing for a few weeks before we are back at full capacity from the previous list.

Some of you have probably also noticed that the jam is longer now. I purposely did this, so it would cut down on the number of jams a day. The list is now set to send out a jam every 900 lines or 24 hours, which ever comes first (used to be 600). Hopefully we will get back in to the days of a jam a day this way.

I also updated the info file before the move, so if you didn't read it when yout got it, you should. I included alot of information on how you get yourself kicked off the list in their :)

A couple of "how to kicked off the list" reminders. Please DO NOT send MIME encoded messages to this list. This includes HTMLmessages. They mess up some people's mailers and take up too much room. Also, when replying to posts, DO NOT include the full text of the original person's mail in your reply. Just include the relevant lines. (I DO NOT understanf WHY this is so hard to get through people's heads).

The next mail from me is VERY VERY VERY important, so MAKE SURE to read it and read it carefully.

    Thanks!

    Hi All ...

Please read this carefully. If you have any questions about it, feel free to email me.

There is a new Dream Theater album coming out October 26th. Everyone knows this. The band want to keep the information about this album quiet UNTIL October 26th. Anyone on this list who has any information about the album is asked NOT to post it here. Let me actually one up that a bit. Anyone posting information regarding the new album (real, fake, rumor, joke, or otherwise) will be IMMEDIATELY removed from this list. This is NOT a joke. The album is purposely being kept quiet and starting rumors here (or even telling real information that you know) is STRICTLY forbidden. I don't think I could say that any other way, so please keep the bands wishes in mind and BE QUIET about the new CD. Its only 6 weeks, you can make it.

You probably need to adjust the truss rod. The truss rod is the metal rod inside the guitars neck, in case you don't know. It's supposed to work against the string drag and keep the neck stable. The neck should have a slight bow (concave) and not a bulk (convex). To check this: press down the strings at the 1st fret and the highest fret. When correctly adjusted it should be just a little space (a few sheets of paper) between the 8th fret (approx. the midpoint on the neck) and the string. If the space is too large, tighten (clockwise) the truss rod, if it's no space at all you will have buzz all over the neck if not the action is very high. Then loosen (counter clockwise) the truss rod. If the truss rod is adjusted correctly, you're allowed low action with no buzz.

If you're not familiar with these adjustments: get a professional to do it, and see how he does it.

Anyway, Ibanez necks are not known to be the most stable in the business. The headstock is glued on at appr. the 3rd fret or so, and the stock Ibanez necks tend to bend a little backwards at that point (sight along the neck).

Why is he singing it in French? I don't have anything against the French but for cryin' out loud! Let's relagate the album sales to as little as possible. This is guarenteed to hurt the bands image. FII wasn't bad enough? I bought it 7 months ago and still can't sit and listen to the whole album. Experiment , try new stuff sure but sing in a language that probably "most" fans don't understand, Jesus Crimony e-damn-nuff. Sounds like LTE should DT2.

Anyways, i dont know if youre serious , but, couldnt you tell this was a joke? I cant imagine someone so dense to not get the humor in Korg's post..and IMO Fii is great...and i really wish some of that feel does creep in on the new disc..

I heard from somewhere that DT has recorded an album called "when dream and today unite" (not completely sure about the title) which is basically their first album with vocals done by James. Can anyone confirm this and tell me where I could get it?

I wouldn't recommend raising you action that high for a buzz problem. If = a slight change in action takes care of a buzz you're lucky, and you have a=

quick fix. In most cases a buzz is caused by a particular fret. Check to see if the = fret has come slightly out of the channel. If not, then "dressing" the fret ma= y be in order. I would recommend having a pro do this, as sanding the frets is not for t= he in-experienced. Also, regarding an earlier post about changing strings from 9's to 10's. = You might also check with a pro on this, on some guitars the additional tensi= on from the heavier strings can bow the neck, which can be corrected by adju= sting the truss rod. In a nut shell, take the guitar to a local pro-shop and have them do a complete set-up for you, then you shouldn't need any major adjustments fo= r quite some time. Also, this might be a good oppertunity to learn some abo= ut taking care of your guitar. Ask the resident tech if you can watch while = he sets up your guitar, you won't regret the time spent...

It's actually a bootleg compilation of live shows where James actually sang those songs. Some of them are pretty good quality live recordings and some of them really suck. :) The band has basically said that there are no plans to re-record those old songs with James as they really don't care to cover old ground and would rather keep moving forward. -- KorgX3 NP: Legends of the Fall.mp3
