True, very true! But later I wrote about the range OUR EARS picks, and that actually this is what we care about. I don't care if a dog notice slight deviation from the REAL original quality in my 256 kbps MP3! :) I really don't! Same as I don't care SEEING the horn sound wave or HEARING the sound of the light, except that it would be incredibly cool and put me in mental hospital (frequency overdose) after 20 minutes! ;)

But anyway, I still don't claim anything too strong until I hear my 256 kbps MP3s on my stereo! It is said that you Al have good equipment, why don't you try it and tell us? -- CyberDuke ________________________________________________

I can speak for Tempest. They are an oddball on Magna Carta in that they are a Celtic rock band. Pretty good actually, but I wouldn't expect too much prog.

Caliban is a project of Leif Sorbye, the main man in Tempest. I haven't heard it, so I can't comment on it.

Mine was just fine, actually... though for a split second after I had put the disc in my stereo I thought that something was wrong with my CD player, until I remembered the track title from their webpage. :)

Yeah, I don't know how useful extending the frequency response would be. The article I read indicated that the loss of frequencies outside that range are what causes digital music to sound "unnatural". I'm sure we're all familiar with digital audio (like answering machines and cell phones) where the frequency response has been limited to a narrow range around the human voice frequency (to save storage and bandwidth). They really suck. But value beyond 20hz-20khz is questionable.

As far as loosing your hearing, the ironic thing is that loud music and guitar tend to be close to the same frequency as the human voice. The first hearing problem most of us will (or already do) notice is the inability to distinguich human voices in a noisy environment. We actually "carve out" a deaf spot right in the middle of our hearing range (voice), and any noise in other frequencies gets picked up "easier", drowning out people talking. Kinda sucks.

I've actually had my hearing graphed, I have an inverted bell curve right there in the middle (thanks to my guitar, most likely).

Wear earplugs and don't turn it up too loud kids...

Well, actually, the second disc is a live disc from the Plugged '98 tour (with her band). I haven't even listened to this second disc yet because the new material on the first disc KICKS SO MUCH ASS. I think the new material is her best since "Little Earthquakes", and may even top it after a couple more listens. It is very atmospheric (almost reminded me of The Gathering's latest disc at times), and perfectly suited the mood I was in on Tuesday.

I saw Tori at America West Arena in Phoenix last night - amazing show. The mix was incredible - probably the best mix I've ever heard, especially for such a large venue. I was very impressed by her drummer, Matt Chamberlain, and her bassist, Jon Evans. Between the two of them, they had quite an amazing groove. Anyway, she played most of the songs I don't really care for, plus a couple that I do, but my girlfriend (DIE-HARD Tori fan) loved every second of it. Tori played with Alanis Morissette, but, IMHO, Alanis' new stuff blows, so we left after Tori... :)

Joseph Bissonnette asked about a few cd's that I know nothing about, except for the Moon Revisited. I have this CD, and don't really like it. Bear in mind that I have all the other "tribute" cd's Magna Carta has put out, and really dig them, especially the Rush and ELP ones. And I am a big Pink Floyd fan, but this CD is just kind of "flat" and lifeless to me. I think maybe I'm just so used to hearing the original that the tribute sounds wrong to me... Maybe... But I'm also a huge Rush fan, and I totally dig the Working Man cd... It an energy and freshness to it that the Moon Revisited doesn't. I don't know. This probably doesn't help you at all!!! :-) But if you're chalking up yays or nays, I say thee nay!

I recently bought a Philips CD-RW 400 series, and after 3 torturous days of opening my computer over and over again, i finally got it installed. now that its working and i have installed the software, i dont know how to record. i managed to record 2 audio tracks from 2 separate CDs, but i dont know how. everything ive tried since then doesnt work. i recorded like 6 tracks from 3 separate sources, and it said it was recording and everything was good. then it said recording was done, so i took it out and put it in the d drive, opened the computer's cd player and the display said "no data" or something like that.

Did you make sure that you said "close disc" on the record properties? That's what it sounds like to me. If you don't close the disc, it won't write the Table Of Contents to tell the CD player where to look for the info to play it. I don't know what program you're using, but in Easy Cd Creator, it's just a tab on the record options thingy menu :) Hope that helps!

Interesting point, and thanks for not calling me a retard =). As a guitarist I've tried different cables and found that there is a very noticeable difference. As a home theater aficionado I've tried different cables and found little to no difference (at least once you get beyond the cheap ass throw-in cables). And in the home theater area I've read some quite detailed tests of wire quality stating that it really doesn't make a difference, including the infamous coat-hanger-wire test (which is what led to my sarcastic wire thickness comment). Al, care to shed any light on the great mystery of speaker cables?

Yes, it does take out some information. I believe it clips some frequencies too high and low to be heard by your average human ear. It also cuts out some other information. At risk of completely mangling what the algorithm does I'll try to explain to the best of my understanding. At any given frequency there can be any number of sounds going on, but the human ear only grabs the loudest and most noticeable one. While a wav file records all of those sounds, including the ones that a person wouldn't hear, an mp3 throws out the excess. In fact there may be some interaction between the different sounds that is lost on an mp3, but I think that's a matter of some dispute. In any case this vaguely remembered from a FAQ I read some time ago, so don't treat it as gospel, but hopefully that'll give you some idea of how mp3's work.

Amanda: About that TON plastic breakage....what label are they on? Not that it matters, I don't think. I've had that happen to me on a number of albums (a Vanden Plas disc from Japan, a Porcupine Tree disc, a Bruce Dickinson disc from BMG)....thought I was cursed or something

No prob. Get a Revox B710 mkII. With the appropriate tape correctly biased, and the record level just below the tape's saturation threshold, you would easily have a signal-to-noise ratio better than an MP3. The frequency response would be fairly flat from 20 Hz to 16 KHz without all of the little sonic holes MP3's introduce.

Tandberg also had one cassette deck in the same class as the Revox. I forget the model. Another great little recorder is the Tascam 122 MK III. The Tascam is not quite as refined as the offerings from Revox or Tandberg, but at $1,350.00 (a grand less than the others) it's unparalleled in it's price range. The big drawback of the Tascam is the lack of on-board calibration tones for tape biasing. This is a deck you have to play hit-and-miss games until you find the right tape and bias combination. Revox, and tandberg have taken the guess work out by supplying the on-board electronics necessary to properly calibrate the machine to the selected media.

Care to put your best digital formats against my O L D analog Revox A77 mk IV (30 ips) reel-to-reel recorder? You'll loose. It's really a shame that machine only has power applied to it once a month or so.. CD's are just too damn convenient.

Oh, c'mon - "Bloddy Kisses" and "October Rust" sounded NOTHING alike. Type O, IMHO, perfectly melded the two styles on this new disc. There are more organ sounds, double bass, gang-screams, and death-themed lyrics (BK), combined with more major keys, cool fuzzy bass tone, and better songwriting (OR). I think this latest incarnation is the one TON really wants to portray as its image to the public - they have reached what they have always been trying to achieve. Not too commercial, yet not too esoteric. Just my <insert calculated exchange rate equivalent to 2 cents> <insert new unit of currency>s.

Now if we could only get a show in the second leg of tour. Does anyone know which agency organises DT tourdates in Europe? Gotta find out how much money are they asking for the show and other conditions.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind traveling all around europe to catch their shows, but it would be a real treat to get them in Slovenia!

On the contrary, lossy compression is usually much more complex. It's used simply because you can compress your data to a much smaller size, if you don't mind it being slightly different when you decompress it again.
