I don't think anyone mentioned the Philly University of the Arts. My old
guitar teacher studied jazz there, and one of his teachers was none other
than Jimmy Bruno ... I'm thinking of going there if I either decide to
major in composition, or if I decide to go the jazz route.

Trey Allen, his friend Brandon and I were the first Ytsejammers every to
meet Bafu, wayyyy back for Ytsecon II. After an amazing roadtrip that
proceeded in stages from Jacksonville and Atlanta up to Charlotte, we
were set to pick up the infamous, wild Bafu Vai at his dad's place in
Chevy Chase, Maryland. (This should have told us something :))
We found the place after getting lost only once and rang the bell. We
were ushered inside to await the presence of the mighty Bafu.
This clean-cut, dark-haired kid comes down the stairs. We're all
thinking (and I think one of us said) "Hi, do us a favor and find your
brother, the one with the long hair and the leather jacket"....but of
course this frightfully normal-looking kid turned out to be THE Bafu.
So, disgusted, we turned and left.
No, wait, that's in the parallel universe without the letter J. :)
We then proceeded the rest of the way up to NY for the infamous Malibu
and Bitch HELL shows -- it's still the most fun I've ever had on a
roadtrip. We NEED another YtseCon. :) I'd volunteer to coordinate
something, but Atlanta is too far off the beaten path for most of us.
Maybe somewhere else?
Oh, count me in as one of those evil Creed-lovers. (And they're touring
with our friends in Crawlspace-- err, Sevendust.) Decent band who made
the colossal mistake of getting signed and pushed by a major label. How
DARE they actually make money and have fans? :)

Has anyone else noticed that at the end of Mystery Train there is someone talking (which sounds like Mike PornToy) and it's being played backwards? Well, he is saying 'I'VE GOT BLISTERS ON MY PENIS!'
I thought it was funny.

Is that from the Robert Heinlein book "The Number of the Beast?" I seem to remember something about one of the universes not having the letter J, but maybe I'm just remembering something else. I never did finish that book; it was just too weird for me.

I just got it as well. Very good stuff - really varied, not one second all that far from interesting, very 70-ish prog sounding WITHOUT sounding dated...
>I never knew Neal morse was that good a piano player!
Sure. And he cuts loose every now and then on Spock's stuff too. Hopefully you own it all and just forgot! :)
>my only complaint is that it >sounds a little too much like >spocks (no complaints here though)
Yeah, Neal is Neal is Neal. If he's singing, you're thinking SB, no question. For that matter, his key playing is very distinctive too - lots of weird chromatic riffs, etc. Good stuff, but it's immediately got his stamp all over it when you hear it. Heck, he's almost suffering from Portnoy psuedo-overexposure. In the last two years, you've had 'Day for Night', his solo album, Transatlantic, and the new Beard is right around the corner - well, late summer probably. Whew! And just look at the overall output from him in the relatively short life (thus far) of the Beard. Whoa.
One last thing. Can Trewavas play down some bass lines, or what? Who'd have thunk?
Mike

SUNY Fredonia's great for music, and I'm not just saying that because I go there. :) Of course, it's super classical-centered, so if you're looking for anything to do with rock guitar stay far away..
DTC: Kevin Moore attended SUNY Fredonia for a semester before dropping out and joining DT. :) I emailed him about it, he said the only time he wasn't miserable was when he was practicing in Mason Hall (the music department building).

So I abandoned my fellow NUS delegates in Blackpool, and forsook a night out with Gillian Byrne and Carolyn Blyth in favour of nipping over to Manchester to see OFB. And to that guy who wrote the big rant on berklee - Thanks! I'm starting there in May, and that post was a big eye-opener (at least subconciously. It's not like I REALLY expected to become a great player just by going to berklee, but in the back of my mind....)

Hi there,
Just wanted to know what you jammers think about the bootleg called CAUGHT IN AMSTERDAM, on 04.14.97, when DT played some unrealesed tracks (for that era) that would make it on the FII albun.
How's the performance?? How's the sound quality?? How's the set list?? Is there any noticeable difference on the new songs??

I don't know if you already got the answer, but I'll tell what I see from the video:
I know that Nightwish was in Finland's finals for European Song Contest, and thou' they won the audinces (phone calls three times more than for the actual winner !) they came second since the freakin' jury there put enough votes for some stupid bitch...*yack*
Anyway, this video seems to be shot at that finals, and the band just seems to give an appearance (as you can see, the phone number for voters) so you can also see who you vote for... That's why they're not playing for real there. And I doubt that Tarja would dress like that to a gig, a real music video of course would be another thing...
I hope I'm talking about the same version as you, so that you don't think I'm talking shit here ;-p

well, i'm going to berklee not so much to learn a whole bunch but to meet people to start a band with. i think it goes without saying that if you don't put in the effort you won't go anywhere. i hope no one expects the college they go to make them good. however, lest you forget, the guys from DT only stayed a semester because the met each other. everything i've heard points to the fact that berklee is about networking, i.e. meeting other people. it is very unlike any other colleges i've seen too. juilliard, eastman, ithaca are all great schools. however, berklee has 2,000-3,000 students all doing contemporary music. name me another school like that. plus, while the focus isn't on rock there are certainly plenty rock musicians there and others who you can jam with. and you can actually take classes in the rock genre. not too many places like that i assure you. btw, if you think by not going to berklee you'll avoid musical snobbery, you're dead wrong. as someone said, it's everywhere. that's fine with me though cause i know DT rules! hahaha.

One of the best thing about DT are the many different people who can connect with the band. While you may love the self-indulgent parts, someone else may not and they have every right to express it here - even if it is "bitching" in your opinion. Personally - it's interesting to compare my opinions with the people on the jam. Everyone loves different aspects of the music and by LISTENING to what they say and taking it into account we can become more openminded - but then again - that's just MY opinion on the situation Sarah

I was surfing the net today and ran unto this short biography of James in the Canadian music encyclopedia:

In it it says that James started singing and playing drums at age 5. That certainly explains why James is a better drummer than Petrucci.
