If anyone's interested in a slightly longer review of the book "Rocking the
Classics", take a look at the following:
http://www.stlawu.edu/shor:http/Rush/books/macan.htm
It's not mine, but since i just happened to visit that page the same day
that book wasreferenced on the Jam, i felt a weird need to point it out.....

Not sure about this. What you said above is exactly what I"m talking
about. The "sector size" I was referring to is equal to 2352 byes (people),
which is what I think you were talking about. For the record, I have
several CDs from mp3s sans pops... <shrug>

A lot of that is the conversion to MP3. You can use 256k+ MP3s to minimize
this, but then the file sizes get too big for most modem users. Which is
why I love being able to download the original in WAV format on the good
'ol DSL line. :) There's a huge different between the "real thing" and MP3
- most people don't realize this...

I think a cool DT cover would be VH's "Hot for Teacher"
I know JP doesn't do a whole lot of tapping stuff, but how cool would
that be?
Or how about "Sexual Healing"? :-)

They do cover "Hot For Teacher", well, a little teaser-y bit of it
anyway. They did, at least, at this tour's Philadelphia show.
Another good theme to cover: "Fletch". Did you hear Chevy Chase died in a
boating accident?

Yer I borrowed this book once which was the Billboard Guide to Prog Rock or something.
Basically it was just this guy going through his very extensive collection of Prog and detailed
descriptions of the band and recommending different CDs. However once again theres hardly
anything from after 1980, no prog metal. He also leaves out a few bands like Rush which is
a bit strange. Worth picking up though if you're interested in getting into early Prog Rock.

If it's the conversion to MP3 that makes the difference, then I suggest
Bogie get a different encoder. I made some demos of my recording and it
still sounds much better than Bogie's version (nothing against him, of
course. ;))
You can hear 30 second demos of the files I encoded at:
http://cout.dhs.org/ft.mp3
http://cout.dhs.org/tdoe.mp3
http://cout.dhs.org/finallyfree.mp3
They're all encoded at 192Kbps using AudioCatalyst 2.0.

Well, I've got a book called "The Progressive Rock Files" by Jerry
Lucky. Lots of obscure prog bands are mentioned here. It includes a CD
with two live Pink Floyd tunes, "Interstellar Overdrive" and "Nick's
Boogie," and two interviews. It's a good book - 304 pages with lots of
pictures. I had to pay $27 for it paperback, though.
Hope that helped!

My sister gave me the same book Christmas last year. Rush, while not
exactly a progrock band, wasn't the only one left out of the book. He
didn't make any mention at all of any of the rather popular neoprog bands:
Marillion, IQ, etc. Gentle Giant, whom many consider to be one of the
cornerstones of prog, wasn't in there either, nor were many other bands
much more influential and essential to the progressive rock movement than a
lot of the ones he lists in there.
The book is a good read in that it does have some detailed reviews of
albums, but it shouldn't have been called "The Billboard Guide To
Progressive Rock". Should've been: "My Music Collection: A Detailed
Analysis". Calling it a guide to the genre infers that it's meant to sort
of define it, and give a broad overview of the major players. It don't,
aside from talking a little bit about its origins from psychedelia and its
growth into the tamed-down, more accessible genre of "new age".
It's no surprise that progmetal wasn't listed, though. A lot of oldschool
prog diehards don't consider it a serious genre. Also, the author (forget
his name) looks totally wasted in his "about the author" picture. Just my
two scents.

Metallica Files Copyright Lawsuit
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Heavy metal rock band Metallica
has accused three universities and the makers of a
popular Internet music sharing software of copyright
infringement and racketeering.
The federal lawsuit contends San Mateo, Calif.-based
Napster Inc., the University of Southern California,
Yale University and Indiana University encouraged
users of Napster software to trade copyrighted
material without the band's permission.
"We take our craft - whether it be the music, the
lyrics, or the photos and artwork very seriously, as
do most artists," Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said
in a statement on the Elektra Records Web site. "It is
therefore sickening to know that our art is being
traded like a commodity rather than the art that it
is."
Metallica alleges the universities allowed free trade
of copyrighted songs to flourish by failing to block
access to the Napster sharing program, thereby
violating the federal Racketeering Influenced and
Corrupt Organizations Act.
"We regret that the band's management saw fit to issue
a press release - and to file a lawsuit - without even
attempting to contact Napster," said Eileen
Richardson, the company's chief executive officer.
"But if these people insist on turning it over to
lawyers, we'll defend the case on that turf."
Napster also has been sued by the Recording Industry
Association of America in federal court in San
Francisco. The trade group, which represents major
recording labels, alleged copyright infringement by
Napster and is seeking $100,000 for each song traded
using Napster software.
At least seven universities are known to have blocked
access to Napster because its use by students
downloading audio files have slowed their computer
networks to a crawl.

guitar tablature page with original tabs of songs (done by me) you won't
really find tabbed elsewhere from these bands:
Amorphis
Bolt Thrower
Edge of Sanity
The Gathering
Katatonia
Nightwish
Ophthalamia
Satyricon
Skyclad
Stratovarius
Therion
I update the page all the time, and coming soon are 4 tabs from
Stratovarius (2 from Infinite and 2 from Destiny), another new Nightwish
song, new Therion, and another Skyclad, among others. So come over and
check it out ! I take requests and submissions, so get on your horse and
come see what I have to offer.
Thanks !

What fucking bullshit! BUYING and SELLING music is what makes music a
commodity. This sickening trading Lars is talking about is what will give it
freedom. The only reason to allow music as a commercial industry is so the
artist gets compensation for his work, but we all know that doesn't happen
anyway. *waiting for the flames*
