Perhaps my point in using Chris's example is not clear, so, how about I just
let him tell you where he's coming from and let you make the decision
yourself. I've spoken with him on the past on this subject and with this
turning into the discussion it has, I forwarded him some of it. You be the
    judge.

I might just say tho, before you get pissed off at his opinions (as I'm sure
some of you might be offended - which is NOT why I'm quoting this) look at
his reason for "controlling" the trade as he puts it and *why* he stopped
bothering to do the Moose/Caribou label - it had nothing to do with making
money (I've marked said area with 3 colons). Here's what he said (I've
editted out stuff that's irrelevant to this discussion):

:My problems with the scenario are numerous. For one thing,
:I have no control over the quality of copies of my original
:releases, but if someone gets a bad one, guess who's going
:to get blamed for it... I mean, I was not perfect; I did
:make a couple of mistakes (the "aliasing" noise on the first
:pressing of "Seattle Supersonic", and the mastering fault on
:the first disc of "Capitol Punishment"). I subsequently
:corrected both -- I never really got around to doing the
:warranty work for the Seattle show, but everyone who bought
:the DC show got a new set of discs free of charge, and I
:lost my shirt on that. I asked for the original discs
:back, in order to keep them from getting circulated, but
:only a couple of guys sent the originals back. Again, I
:have no control over that -- but at least I told Dave
:Weller abouyt the problem, and he has it posted on his
:web site, so at least the knowledge of the defective one
:is out there. I would gladly replace for free any of the
:original "Seattle Supersonic" sets, but I doubt that any
:of those guys are ever going to get back in touch with me
    :now.
    :
:And it never fails that the guys who make the most noise
:about the free circulation of recordings are the biggest
:parasites in the bunch -- you think that **** has
:ever taped a show in his life? Or ****? Or ******?
:No, the vast bunch of these guys see "the
:free circulation of recordings" as an excuse to stick
:their hands into whichever collection they want, and they
:never have anything to give back and return. You know,
:"I want it! But I have nothing to give back to you in
:trade for it. But you're an asshole if you don't make
:me a free copy!" And then they whine like a bunch of
:::crybabies if it isn't a DAT soundboard. And then they
:::whine like a bunch of crybabies even more when the end
:::result of all of this is that recordings get hoarded,
:::and the real dedicated collectors and historians never
:::get to hear a particular "Hemispheres" soundboard or a
:::full tape from the CoS tour. Lists of shows on web
:::sites have only exacerbated this problem. And what we
:::have now is exactly what you'd expect -- the same shows
:::circulated over and over and over and over again, ad
:::nauseum, and nothing new or previously hidden ever
    :::surfaces.
    :
:::Look at what happened when that Rockford 11/15/75 tape
    :::leaked out.
    <snip>
:::Imagine what could have been pried out of collector's
:::hands had that recording been properly controlled and
:::handled. But NOOO, a few inexperienced dorks get their
:::hands on it, and post to a.m.r. that they'll give away
:::free copies to everyone, and fuck all of those assholes
:::who sell CDs... and in a matter of weeks, the show is
:::as worthless trade-wise as St. Louis '80. And the
:::guys who are sitting on significant recordings just
:::sit back and laugh, because they get their copy of
:::Rockford eventually, and never have to give anything
:::up for it. That one was the last straw for me. I
:::simply am not trading or circulating anything any
:::longer, because I have nothing to gain from it... no
:::one has anything to offer in return, and if I try to
:::cover my time and trouble by asking for a token fee
:::for the discs, I'm an "asshole bootleg seller". So
:fuck them all -- they can all listen to their "Fly
:By Cleveland" CDs for the rest of their lives. When
:I-Vent runs out of garbage quality tapes to transfer,
:unimproved, to CD-R, he'll drop out also, and there
:will be no one left after that, apart from the rare
:Gypsy Eye CD that gets put out (usually of a show
:that everyone has already had for years anyway).
    <snip>
:All that I was trying to do with Moose/Caribou was
:two things: (1) get some of the significant older
:shows archived to CD while they were still fresh,
:since at the time the "silver" producers were largely
:ignoring them in favour of '80s and '90s stuff; and
:(2) make it affordable for guys who were either just
:starting out in collecting or didn't have the time
:and/or interest in trading to hear certain shows.

Like I said, don't get pissed at me for writing this, as it's a quote. My
only intention for having it hear was to share his viewpoint as well as to
show another view of why the "free all boots" mentality might not always be
for the best of everyone. BTW, when he mentions he "has nothing to gain"
from trading anymore he's speaking about finding new and lesser gens of
shows; not only that, but in a message he sent me some time ago, he had also
said he stopped trading because of all this bickering taking away his
enjoyment of trading (this had absolutely *nothing* to do with money). As it
is, if you wanna continue to discuss what he said, fine, but I probably
won't be adding much (if anything).

    > And I'm sure you didn't pay BootScalpers (tm) like Kiss the Stone for "Lords
    > of Sound" or "Lost in the Sky," so why should we be forced to buy from
    > Scarred?

Actually, I paid for numerous bootlegs - in fact, lemme count them for
ya....26 DT boots (including KTS stuff and 3 that were on cassette), 26 Rush
boots and 8 QR boots. Wanna list? I'll send it to ya if you think I'm full
of it (or would photos be better to prove I have them?) So do I have right
to say something about this topic? Yes I do! And do I sell copies of these
CDs to anyone? No! Do I offer them for trading? Yes (unless they are from
Scarred Records and in-print). So am I a hypocrit? No.

    > It looks like the vast majority of people on the list agree
    > with me here, and it's good to see that.

Actually, you might be surprised to see how many people emailed me privately
in agreement with my stance. It's just that they didn't want to prolong this
argument nor catch all the hell I am for speaking up publicly.

Just to set the record straight on this: I'm not Scotch the guy who did all
the Prism covers, tho I wouldn't mind claiming to have done them! :)
However, I hope the effort I have put into the artwork on this thing will
make Scotch proud. Those of you who buy it can be the judge.... :)

Ok, that was longer than I wanted, but I wanted to cover everything. If you

BTW, to those of you that haven't heard the band yet, I *strongly*
recommend them. Sort of old-Genesis-ish, with stronger vocals (and I
like PG), and lyrics about hanging out in the town that all my D&D

For what it's worth, with the new Crimson on the way in a month, I think it might be a good thing that Bruford and Levin are out. Well, not that THEY'RE out specifically, but just that I thought the double trio idea might have been a bit *too* prodigious. (Never thought I'd say that about Crimson!) I thought the peak of Crimson work was in the 3 albums from the early 80s; the music was the most focused, I think. Of course, maybe more work with the double trio would've helped, but the logistical problems with that were illuminated in the splintering into the ProjeKCts.

Also, rumor has it that this might be Belew's last album with the band. Which, of course, would be an enormous loss, but the way Crimson works, I have trouble believing anything final about any of them, short of death, I guess.

Lastly, picked up the new Levin album, Waters of Eden, along with the new live California Guitar Trio album and the BLUE Nights live double album. All great in their own way. The Levin album is very new age-y, so be warned, if that's not your thing. The BLUE Nights album is, as you'd expect, very improvisational, offering extended versions of most of the stuff from the BLUE album (which is freaking brilliant, for what it's worth). The CGT album is great, offering a fair representation of their live show. In fact, I think it's probably the best representation of them, PERIOD, if anyone is looking for something to pick up by them.

This is apples and oranges, bro. No one is throwing out bootlegs. It's not found material. It's bootleg music, which has its own bag of legal and moral and ethical questions with it. That doesn't come when you find a chair in an alley and decide to take it home and make it pretty. If a "provider" had the rights to a show, I.E. a band said "Go ahead and tape, and get as many copies out to people as you can by whatever means you choose" or whatever, then I would be with you. But since this is a gray area, and because of how boots are SUPPOSED to be traded, in optimal conditions, I disagree, as I think one must.

But now, before we continue some big Scott bash or something, I would like everyone to know that Scott is straighter than an arrow (except that I have never seen him with a girl of his own... I wonder... NAH!) and he's RIDICULOUSLY nice. He is the equal of anyone on this list in terms of how loyal a DT fan he is (if not way beyond a lot of us). If this thread is going to continue, let's keep it civil. :)

Has anyone of you guys listened to the new Nightwish samples on their homepage www.nightwish.com yet? There are four (1-2 min) MP3s (heh) taken from their up-coming album "Wishmaster". The music and of course Tarja's vox sent chills down my spine. You can also see the beautiful cover art for the new cd on the website. Hey, Wow, I think it's been a year since I last posted to the jam. Not bad for a previous MFP champ :) Anyway, I'm in the market for a high-end effects processor for my guitar rig, and I want to know anyone's suggestions on what to buy. What I'm looking for more than anything? Rich reverb & chorus effects, and A GOOD PITCH SHIFTER/HARMONIZER!! Now, I know the standard answer would be Eventide, but my price range caps out @ about $1400. I've looked into the G-Force from TC, and the Lex MPX 1 and MPX G2. The TC unit seems the best (especially since I saw & heard Vai using it a few months back and he sounded pristine), but most reviews of it kill and bury it's pitch shifter. If you own it, what do you think? Is there a better unit for the money? I really dug the effects of the Lex MPX 1, but have yet to try the pitch shifter, and the MPX G2 looks like the MPX 1 with a preamp in it...which I don't need. Is there anything better out there? Which of these is the better box overall? How about for harmonizing? For reference, I'm running a slew of Ibanez guitars (everything from an old EX to a Sabre to a Prestige 7) through a Rocktron Chameleon (don't rip this unit, the factory presets suck, but once you get to tweaking it, the possibilities are endless and the TONE is to die for), through a BBE, Mesa 50/50, and a Mesa Recto 4x12. It's a great, versatile rig and I'm just looking for a great processor to complete the rig. On a side note, Does Petrucci use the Eventide on tour? I didn't get a good look in his rack when they came through town a few months ago, and was wondering if he was using that or a Lexicon unit for his harmonized parts. Anyone know? I realize he doesn't do too many Michael Romeo-type leads with the shifter full on, but I'm sure he uses it for a few things at least in the live show (i.e. Final Tradgedy).

Thanks for any and all help!

Peace and love, and good happiness stuff,

    - Well Lloyd, My guitar player, always brings up that fact that he likes the way the songs and vocal arrangements were written when Trev came in.

    - I'll play something off "Open Your Eyes" which has the original lineup and Lloyd'll say, "Those Harmonies came about because of Trevor Rabin"

    - Don't get me wrong, I like most everything YES has done, even some of Jon Andersons New Age stuff, but I really like music by the early original lineup.
