I've got an mp3 of DT (or maybe just Petrucci) doing an extremely
cool
instrumental version of Prince's "Purple Rain" (please don't flame
me if
Purple Rain was originally an instrumental - I've never heard it).
Does
anyone know from whence this came? If I remember correctly, it's
about 9
1/2 minutes long. It sounds like it's recorded live, but there's no
crowd
noise at all. The recording quality is better than some bootlegs
I've
heard, but worse than others. Any ideas?

Ok, I don't mean for this to be a flammatory email, but some of the comments
presented struck somewhat of a final nerve with me over some of this
DT-bashing-on-the-DT-fanlist stuff. I feel like I read more bitching about
DT than anything else. For the record, DT is my favorite band (although I
don't claim to be as musically well-rounded and exposed as many of you) and
probably will be for as long as I can see.
A lot of this is about all the "immaturity" and disdain for "notes for the
sake of notes" etc... or "every new keyboardist will inevitably suck" etc.
etc.. IMO, while Derek may have "held the band back" in some ways, the
results of this are rather intriguing.. I know FII is widely viewed as the
worst DT album but I do honestly like most of FII, especially the most
excellent ToT, LitS, Hell's Kitchen etc. .. these songs would probably not
have been created with Kevin or Jordan. I don't dislike any of these guys,
although I must say I like Jordan the best because... hopefully there are
some of you out there that agree...
I love every moment of DT's SELF-INDULGENCE.
all of this is strictly opinion, as are all judgments on musicality, so I
can't place this viewpoint over anyone that disagrees... but I'm not going
to go around saying this-or-that-section was just "too much".."immature"..
"masturbatory" .. .whatever. I mean, you'd think this list would be full of
people who aren't always BITCHING about how horrible DT is for being like
that. A lot of that *is exactly* what sets DT apart... yeah it's about
songwriting all that ETC... but I find a lot simpler tunes enjoyable too,
but it's the *complexity* that doesn't sacrifice [emotion] that makes DT the
best, and with that, I whole heartedly agree. I love complex and difficult
music.. e.g. Chopin .. so perhaps that is why I'm not so down on Jordan. I
do a lot of piano improvisation that might be considered somewhat
Jordan-esque. Every musician has his/her own style and I don't think it's
right to tell them to be someone else. The reason for doing music starts
with self-gratification, and I would have no problem with DT (or anyone) if
they never go beyond that. It's the commonality in musical interests that
keeps the fans (and the band's members) connected to each other (musically).
So I guess my point is.. live and let live.. it's not really worth fussing
about because it's all about their fun and fortunately for them, it's our
fun too. (Or at least for me, personally.) Long live DT's
self-indulgence...

Not only do I remember this clearly, but it brings back a similar moment:
Went all the way up to Birch Hell for the pre-FII "Home for the Holidays"
show, with about a quarter-million others. :) Not only did I run into Kevin
"Go Wings" Madden in line, but during the press to leave the club - in other
words, just before I slipped into the dance club to avoid the press (and
ogle the women) - I hear a forlorn wail above the crowd:
"Baaaffffuuuuu!"
I started laughing so hard I thought I was going to pass out, and our old
bassist Alex - a non-jammer - looked at me like I was nuts. (Well, I was/am,
but that's beside the point...)
Maybe that should be the Official Ytsejam Attention Call. (tm)

Columbia College in Chicago or Northwestern Illinois University both have
very developed music programs. The drawbacks from Northwestern (maybe not
for you, though) are that it's really expensive if you don't get scholarship
and academics are very important (ie: it's really hard to get in). If you
can though, it's an amazing school.

Another good one to look at in this area is Ithaca. Being a private
school, it is rather expensive and kind of difficult to get into, but it
has an extraordinary music department (so I've heard). I know several
people that have attended (including music teachers that top the charts
when I grew up). It's a very good undergrad music school.

Now that the "BINFG" has been stated by several people, let's discuss
just for one moment why people have come to say this. Mike Portnoy, John
Myung, and John Petrucci were well on their way to becoming the players they
wanted to be BEFORE Berklee. Berklee didn't offer any classes on "Creating
an Innovative Prog Band" nor do they have any "Chops 101" type classes.
These guys got good because they practiced what they were listening to on
their own time. The knowledge that they got from Berklee (How long were
they there... like a fuckin' semester?) that they actually USE in their
writing could be gotten in the same semester at a local community college.
Berklee is not a rock school. Its reputation is as a jazz school, and it's
not at ALL what it used to be, though I still think it's a realistic and
viable option for many, if only because you'll be near so many like-minded
music students.
I have several friends who went there (I opted to go somewhere local,
because I didn't want to study jazz at the time--even though I have since
spent a lot of time and energy doing just that--but I am SURE that I have
found a better teacher here at NIU than I would have at Berklee) and NONE
have EVER come back with the story that "It's a VERY nice place" or a very
nice area. One friend who spent 3 years there was mugged at least twice...
and this dude's not small.
Berklee's current student attitude needs some adjustment, according to
my friends' stories. There's the "I wanna play rock" crowd who may feign
interest in jazz and classical because they "know they're supposed to," if
they bother to even put that effort in. Then there's the other side of the
coin, with the wannabe bebop guys who mock all things that aren't jazz.
There are definite exceptions, and I'm sure there's hundreds of cool people
there, but you will run into this there. You take similar shit at any music
school I've heard of though, so really there's no escape from your peers'
myopia. It's up to YOU to be serious at Berklee, just like many other
schools. Unlike most universities, it's a bit difficult to get booted for
not doing your work... you get into Miami or Texas and fuck around and
you'll be informed of the lattitude and longitude of "the door."
No real college or university is going to help you learn to shred.
That's for a school like AIM, Music Tech, or MI (GIT, etc). These places
offer quality programs, but it's not really applicable in terms of "Oh, I
think maybe I'll go on and get my Masters and teach at a university." Ask
yourself "What do I want from a music school?" If you need someone to hold
your hand, you need to find a teacher, and not a school. If you want to
learn jazz or classical (the typically "academically accepted" musical
forms) you should be able to find something within your state. If you
really want to get the best program for YOU, then you have to be prepared to
go somewhere you don't want to... you may find Indiana Bloomington to be the
best blend for you. If you're interested in a full on intense melt your
brain guitar assault (not in terms of shred, though technical proficiency is
a requirement) consider NIU for the sake of Fareed Haque alone. If you want
to slack off, you need to choose a place that's more lenient than these
types of places. If cost is an issue, get on the FAFSA forms and start
looking for some scholarship audition material if you want to go to Texas,
Miami or Berklee (these places are expensive!)
I think you'll regret not considering all your options (limiting
yourself to one corner of the country) at some point if you really want to
find the best school for you. I think you'll regret going to school for
music if all you want to do is play DT type stuff, though you'll be happy
with the decision if it opens you up to new concepts of what is "good"
music.
Many of the best musicians you listen to never went to school. "Berklee
Ain't No Fucking Guaranteeeee" basically means that if you're looking for a
school to make you a great musician, you're not going to be a great
musician. You'll get great by your efforts alone, if you put all your
effort in. A school can offer you a structured format which you can apply
your effort and intent to, but everything you can learn in a music school is
available to you outside school. Many of us just like it served to us
forcefully. :)

Well... this was quite a shocker, but it really throws things into
perspective. Just so i can get this out of the way, i'm looking to
study guitar to prepare myself to make a living throught music after
college. i'm not looking to be some amazing rock star or anything--it's
impractical to think i'll become rich and famous by going to a certain
college. In fact, i don't even want to rich and famous, i just want to
be able to live with music. From college, and i want to learn to play
with good technique and different styles of music. I want to be able to
play jazz, rock, classical, and other styles.
I want to go to a college that will teach me that, and like you said
going to a local college may teach me just as well as going to a more
expensive and well-known school, like berklee. I really don't know much
about the school's i've considered so far (Rutgers, Ithaca, Berklee). I
was just asking if anybody knew of other schools I should consider for a
serious career in music, because let's face it there's little chance
that I can become a famous recording artist just by going to a certain
college.
So... if anybody has any other suggestions i'm open, but let's not have
some huge fight over going to a certain college will make you famous.

For those jammerz who reside in Arizona like me, pick a copy of this week's "The Rep" - the AZ Republic's weekly entertainment guide - there is an extremely positive review of Transatlantic's new disc! :)
I was SHOCKED to see it there - right next to a decently bad review of Pantera's latest - Transatlantic is obviously a side-project of four pretty damn obscure bands, so to see it there truly astonished me...
Here is the text of the review (accompanied with the publication's highest rating, a smiley face):
--------------------------------------------------- Transatlantic is Neal Morse, Roine Stolt, Pete Trewavas, and Mike Portnoy - members of four of the finest prog bands of the 1990's. Therefore, SMPTe starts with two points against it. First, it is a progressive rock band, and secondly, it is a supergroup. Anyone remember Asia? Fortunately, SMPTe does not suffer from its genesis. Yes, Transatlantic is progressive, but a strong sense of each song keeps the band from getting lost in the musical stratosphere. The palaying stays true to the musicians' roots: Inventive and impeccable without needless soloing. Most groups of this sort turn into noodly shred-fests, with members fighting for most notes played, but Transatlantic works as a unit, not a collection of warring musicians.
Transatlantic does not compromise its style for commercial success, either. The album features the requisite progressive epics. Three tracks are more than 15 minutes long, with one clocking in at more than a half-hour. The two remaining songs are relatively short and showcase the group's knack for pop melodies and Beatlesesque harmonies. Fans of classic rock should love this. Transatlantic has harnessed the energy of 70's prog, mixed in a healthy dose of Lennon-McCartney and removed the egos before cooking.

I happened to notice the other day that Amazon.com lists the European version of the single for sale. I think it was $10.49 or something like that. As far as the Japanese version, I'm told that RAM Music (www.rammusic.com) will be getting that in stock when it's released. I've already got mine pre-ordered. :-)

I'm fairly sure that the recording you're talking about was recorded at a clinic, but I may be mistaken. I think I've heard the recording you're talking about. In it, I think JP plays the entire lead guitar over the top of some backing tracks. (FYI, if you haven't heard the original Prince track, JP by and large plays lead in the same melody as the vocals... if I remember correctly - it's been a while since I heard it too. :-) ) If you're looking for an incredible recording of it, JP joined up with various other guitar players (ie. Steve Morse, Don Dokken, etc.) to record a Japanese-only instrumental album called "Guitar Battle". On the Purple Rain track, JP is joined by a few other guitar guys, and they trade off lead licks over the top of the drums and stuff. It's absolutely beautiful, and I highly recommend the release. Eastman school in Rochester, NY is one of the premier in the country. The Esther Boyer College of music (Part of Temple U.) In Philadelphia, PA is good, too from what I hear.

All i can say is.. WOW!! (jaw drops) Even if youre only a little into old school prog w/ a twist... this is a mUST! I never knew Neal morse was that good a piano player! NOT Suny Purchase, I don't even know if that exists, Andrew MEANS Potsdam, the crane school of music. Also good is Suny Fredonia, I would choose there over crane because crane reminds me of a prison. My high school band director went to Crane and got his master's at Ithaca, he said if he were going to do it all over again he would just go to Ithaca. BTW, this may be my last post. stay tuned.
