I remember things a little differently...
I remember walking around southeast Washington, D.C. (the "really bad part
of town") one evening in November 1997. I was with Syrinx, Jason Birzer,
some guy from Booz-Allen Hamilton who was pretty cool (are you still around?
message me sometime, got a question for ya) and a few other Ytsejammers. We
had just arrived at the Capitol Ballroom, about a half-hour before the doors
opened. As we saw the size of the line for the show, we realized finding
our guest would be difficult.
So we started screaming "Bafu! Bafu! BAFU!" We didn't find Bafu, but there
must have been at least ten unidentified Dream Theater fans who just turned
and grinned. They weren't laughing AT us; they were just amused by the fact
that they knew what the hell we were shouting at :)
In the meantime, my (ex-)boss called me on my cell phone. He's not a
Ytsejammer, and it showed: he asked why everyone around me was screaming
"Bathroom! BATHROOM!" I didn't even bother to explain; I think I just hung
up on him and left the phone turned off the rest of the night :)

I got my copy from www.hmv.com, sent it out to me the next day even.
It is a VERY guitar oriented CD, but IMO he does some VERY cool stuff
on it. If you really dig Romeo's guitar playing, you won't be
dissapointed.

Berklee College of Music in Boston. Ive been up there twice for the
guitar sessions, Im goin to that again this summer, and I plan on
going there once I get out of high school. The campus is VERY nice,
as is the area around the college.

Well, there's audio editors that can now directly edit the mp3 format via
either a plugin or just built in support. But the method described above
is the way I've always done it (like editing out 2 second gaps from some
schmuck who couldn't use Disc at Once, etc)...

Try going to www.goldwave.com That is a damned good audio editor that most people can figure out with a minimum of effort. Look on the page for a link to something called the "BladeENC MP3 Codec" or something. It is an external DLL that you can toss in your windows\system subdirectory that should allow you to read/write MP3s within Goldwave.
As far as the editing itself goes, it should be simple: left click in the sound window to mark the spot to start playing, and right click to mark the spot to stop playing. Hit the Play button to test it, and if it is to your liking, hit the Trim button and it will get rid of the leading and trailing space that you are complaining about. You should be able to figure it out.
Even if you go with the recommendation to write it to a .wav, edit it, and encode it as an MP3 again, I would still suggest using Goldwave.

Try getting it from Ken at The Laser's Edge. It's a great import place dealing with prog and other hard to find stuff. He's always been a good source for Symphony-X and Michael Romeo stuff (I got those CDs for about $15 each when most people were paying upwards of $22). It has been a while since I have listened to The Dark Chapter, but I did enjoy it. It is typical Romeo shreading stuff, if you like his guitar work in general, you will dig it. The most frequent complaint is that he uses a drum machine in leiu of a real drummer, but it didn't bother me that much.
Check out the site and ask Ken if he still has a copy somewhere.
A couple of other companies I have dealt with in the past that were good are Alta Mira and Sentinel Steel, though I don't have URLs handy for either. Search around.

Why do YOU listen to them if you think THIS? The thing that set and continues to set DT apart from the (for lack of a better term) "Magna Carta bands" is their ability to compose/play music that does not sacrifice emotion for complexity.

Whether or not they're silly, MEDIEVAL, or adolescent aside, lyrics are a matter of songwriting/composition; NOT performance.

I'll give you Metropolis, and the Under a Glass Moon guitar solo - both of those are pretty much "look what I can do" statements, and IMO, nonsense. Take the Time, however, flows from start to finish as a unified whole. It doesn't feel like 9 minutes - it feels like about 4. The complexity in TtT is a compositional device. Complexity does not equal immaturity. Playing fast does not equal immaturity. Trying to cram as many notes as possible into any space at every chance available is immaturity.
By Jordan's own admission, he has problems keeping his right hand under control. Lack of self-control is a sign of immaturity, whether it's a toddler who isn't potty trained or a student who binge drinks.

Well, as sure as there's a difference between complex/fast and immature, there's also a difference between simple/slow and mature. Songs like "Georgia...", while nice, put me to sleep. (Depending on whomever is playing it.) Brandenburg 3 is a good example of simple (relatively) music that is not immature. Bach is just about one of the LEAST self-indulgent composers ever, and yet his music is filled with note-y, over-the-top stuff.

Yeah, I'll agree that there are MANY things about Derek that are immature, (even though it's hard to say how much of that was an act for "rock" style) but his approach to the musical aspect of performance was NOT. It seems that in his work playing songs that he did not have a hand in writing, he learned that it is best not to get carried away, and he's applied that to his own composition, too. Very mature.

When I put THEIR music in perspective, I find that I like DT because they show that there is a middle-ground between Mahler and Metallica, the parts that are masturbatory and immature are in the minority, and the parts that make me cringe because of the, simply put, poor taste in which they are played are largely driven by Jordan. In the middle section of Metropolis, I invariably yawn, think about something else, look at my watch, etc., then snap back in when James comes back. but in sections like the One Last Time intro, or Beyond this Life nonsense, it's just so distracting and out of place that I have to skip past it.
I'll never argue his technical prowess - he's a MONSTER. But I'll have a lot more respect for him once he gets it under control and learns to be more musical. It's like what Spider-Man says "along with great power comes great responsibility." You have to use your powers for more than your OWN gratification. I KNOW Jordan is capable of this. I just hope he decides to try it.

I've got an mp3 of DT (or maybe just Petrucci) doing an extremely cool instrumental version of Prince's "Purple Rain" (please don't flame me if Purple Rain was originally an instrumental - I've never heard it). Does anyone know from whence this came? If I remember correctly, it's about 9 1/2 minutes long. It sounds like it's recorded live, but there's no crowd noise at all. The recording quality is better than some bootlegs I've heard, but worse than others. Any ideas?

Before this competition it was made very clear that people's votes count for 80% (if my memory serves me right) and judge's 20 %. But this was a big rip-off. Nightwish got over double as much votes from viewers as the next one but very lousy votes from judges, so they lost. Something in the system was very wrong. You should have heard the song that actually won, total crap (but of course, we're talking about the European Song Contest here) ! Neither the judges nor the viewers thought the song was the best and still it won. Argh.
I love the song Sleepwalker and I'm glad one radio station is playing it (it's not released as a single). It's a little different this song, but beautiful...

Hi Just a quick note on DT in London on Tuesday night. (it was fucking cold standing outside!) The venue was much better than the Forum and judging from my MD also better acoustically. James was late on his cue for the very first line-he walked right past his mic stand! John Petrucci had a guitar sound and tone that no mortal man deserves, it was just fantastic (and got louder in the second half of the gig-hooray!)
James sang really well and was better than in 95, 97 and 98
Jordan and John M were excellent oh, and Mike played drums ;)
DT were better at this sold out venue compared with the last few times at the Forum IMHO. I think they enjoyed it better too.

I just got back from seeing SB and DT in Manchester and London.
DT seemed very pleased with the size of the venues and the attendance. I'm not much good at guessing sizes (did I ever tell you about my 29-inch weiner?) but I'd say there were well over 2000 people in Manchester, and similar in London. As James said on both nights, "Things seem to be looking up for Dream Theater in the UK!" to much cheering from the crowd. :-)
Great energetic and fun performances from SB on both nights, although they suffered from terrible sound at the London show (maybe that's just because of where I was standing).
DT played flawlessly, the sound was perfect, and the light show was quite spectacular, BUT the video clips were - I'm sorry to say - dismal. I have never cringed so much in my life! The (ahem) "gritty realism" of the murder scene really had me terrified. Not.
I didn't laugh, because I had a nasty feeling that it wasn't *supposed* to be funny.
As expected, after spending two days in the freezing wind and rain and snow of England, I got back home to Glasgow on a beautiful warm sunny afternoon.
Personal highlight of the weekend: getting a wave from Neal Morse when he spotted me in my SB t-shirt in the (almost) front row at Manchester. Cool. :-)
Paul, Ash, Charlie, Adrian, Chloe: nice to see you all. Same again next time, I presume . . .
