Actually, "from whence" is a controversial but often used form.
    To quote Webster's:

    ---------------------------
    Main Entry: whence
    Pronunciation: 'hwen(t)s, 'wen(t)s
    Function: adverb
Etymology: Middle English whennes, from whenne whence (from Old English
hwanon) + -s, adverb suffix, from -s, genitive singular ending; akin to Old High
German hwanAn whence, Old English hwA who
    Date: 13th century

whence: from what place, source, or cause <then whence comes this paradox --
       Changing Times>
    - from whence : from what place, source, or cause <no one could tell me from
whence the gold had come -- Graham Greene>
    -------------------------------

Usage Note: The construction from whence has
been criticized as redundant since the 18th
century. It is true that whence incorporates
the sense of from: a remote village, whence
little news reached the wider world. But
from whence has been used steadily by
reputable writers since the 14th century,
most notably in the King James Bible: "I will
lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence
cometh my help" (Psalms). It is difficult to
label as incorrect a construction with such
respectable antecedents. Still, it may be
observed that whence (like thence) is most
often used nowadays to impart an archaic or
highly formal tone to a passage, and that
this effect is probably better realized if
the archaic syntax of the word - without from - is
    preserved as well.

Devin Townsend bootleg, huh? Let me guess -- he got mugged, and
stabbed in the stomach, and someone had a MiniDisc recorder to capture
the dulcet tones of his agonizing screams while he bled to death? Oh,
no, wait, that was how he got the vocals to Natural Science. Never

How do three guys leave a five-member group, and the other two decide it's OK to keep the name? Especially when one of those three guys has one of the most distinctive voices in power metal (or whatever they're called), and they're just *not* going to sound the same afterward? I mean, at least when Yes did "Drama", they had Squire, Howe, and White, and a singer that could pass for Anderson if you're not looking. Color me baffled.

You can get Chroma Key's new album at their website *www.chromakey.com) for $12.95 + S/H. I preordered it and had it signed by Kevin Moore. Very similar to Dead Air For Radios.

I don't really think JP used an Ernie Ball guitar, or at least only an EB, on SFaM. If you look at the booklet you'll see that it's written: "Dream Theater thanks everybody at and exclusively use: ..., ..., Ibanez Guitars, .., ..., Ernie Ball, ....", but it's not written Ernie Ball Guitars.

oh-my...must...comment...ehhh...ok. i am a guitarist. but i have to dissagree with you. so youre saying that every other musician...sorry- "person who TRIES to be a musician-" is someone who COULDNT play guitar so was forced to CHOOSE another instrument? eh...i dont agree. for example, i really dont think that mike portnoy was a guitar failure. he plays drums because he WANTED to, and perhaps because he kicked ass at it when he began.

also, i think youre saying that the only "TRUE musicians" are the ones who create good music. youre also saying that the only "TRUE musicians" are guitarists. therefore, youre saying that only guitarists make good music?!?!?! um...what about people like mozart? he wasnt any guitarist, atleast to MY knowledge, but his music, i THINK, is still considered GOOD. or, to be more modern, look at pink floyd. roger waters was INDEED the bassist...sorry... the "person that fell out of a guitar player"...but he wrote most of pf's music. and again, id have to consider much of their music to be along the lines of GOOD music NOT created by a guitarist.

dont get me wrong. i respect your opinion, i just guess that it depends on how you define music, but i dont think that all the good music in the world has been created by guitarists and i CERTAINLY dont think that every other person who plays an instrument was a guitar failure. the universe of music is created out of emotion and does not have to revolve around the guitar all the time, IMHO.

anyway, i also think that james labrie is a hottie...a very NICE hottie! ;o) rose cluck42@aol.com "A wrong note played timidly is a mistake. A wrong note played with authority is an interpretation."

A guitar player walks into his rehersal room to find his drummer and bass player fighting. He breaks the fight up and asks the bass player why they were fighting. The Bass player tells him that the drummer had de-tuned one of his bass strings. The singer says " That's no reason to fight", the bass player says "Yes it is, He won't tell me which string it was."

What you're failing to understand here is that although these other musicians may have never played guitar, it is quite evident simply due to the fact that they >don't< nor >haven't< they, by default, are guitar failures. Therefore, they shall never become Shreddi. Also, shalt nay they enter the Lord's blessed kingdom and, lo, shalt they ne'er be blessed with the most reverent gossamer wings befitting only that of the Seraphim, the highest order of the Angelic Choir.

There's only one place for those like me, though. I have fallen. I now play bass and piddle with keys. *sigh* I might as well commit suicide right now, because the rest of my life will seem but a fleeting moment compared to the aeons and aeons of hellish torture I've yet to endure in the afterlife.

BTW, if you're not a guitar player, start >now<. Ignorance is no exception to the rule. Play guitar and play it well, or be damned. -- KorgX3 notes a horrid lack of proper punctuation. Lesson 2: Never get drunk with mom and post to your favorite mailing list. P.S. Drunk moms rock. :)

Hey, I may be FINALLY getting a copy of the 12-29 Christmas show from Irving Plaza, and I've been wondering something for a long time:

At one point during the show, (before "To Live Forever"), James said, "Ok, this is the last song", something to that affect. Anyways, is there someone in the audience who yells out, "Hey fuck you man!" to be heard after he says that?

That was my very first DT show, so I really want to have it, that'd be a great momento, as will the live DVD/VHS/CD from this Aug 30th show!!!!

Yay to all the ticket holders for the 30th-See ya there!

    Warm Regards, Andy

All kidding aside fellas - this has been a complaint of mine for many, many years. Some of us are short-sh@ts (laugh) and don't want to wear a men's large and XL that hangs down to our knees. I'm sick of using music tees as nightshirts. As for the two sizes less idea, well that doesn't work when you are dealing w/ mens sizes, finding even an medium is sometimes impossible. Also, the washing in hot water to shrink them trick doesn't seem to work on these (although it seems to happen to my jeans all the time - ha ha).

I got quite a few suggestions r.e. the Boss GX700 (thanks all concerned), so I'm going to tap the Jam's knowledge again, since I have the option to buy one of these 'boards for £400 (about $700). Any thoughts appreciated on private mail, particularly r.e. their ability to make convincingly KevMo sounds.

Hi. I'm still at work and to sum up the week: unmotivated. Blah. July is almost over. Where's the summer going? Napster's almost gone. Sigh. So today on the Today show they had NSYNC for their summer series and these thousands of people stood and waited since YESTERDAY to be there and now I'm realising why I'm afraid of the Roseland show, even though I'm really excited about it and all... think of these thousands of NSYNC fans... lower the scale a bit in proportion with the Dream Theater fanbase. Now consider that instead of these crazed young screaming people who stand there and listen to the music, imagine slightly older group that moshes. Instead of being outside on a nice summer's day, it's a club. big open space that quickly runs out of space and cool air. The energy is high. What am I saying? Looking forward to seeing everyone there. It'll be here before we know it. After this maybe DT will be able to play in seated venues. -Rachel

ps. email me some ideas on melodic instrumental stuff, please. Thank you.

For those of you who are familiar with the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee:

The tickets are not general admission. However, the question is, do they expect you to stay at your seat or in your seat area, or does the crowd generally turn into mush? This is rather important for some of us who would have liked to have been seated as a group but things did not turn out as planned.

Thanks much for any help, feel free to e-mail me privately on this one.

since thejam has been dead i felt it neccessary tio enlighten yall about another DT dream. this timeI was in a warehouse, and stumbled on a secret video shoot. They were all dressed in the IAW outfits, including James' pirate shirt (hehe) but there was one thing wrong. Kevin moore was playing guitar and JP was on keys. I asked him why this was, and he said the record company thought he looked cooler than petrucci. I then told him i was sorry for not getting the 2nd chroma key album, and we had a converstaion about the 1st one, he was really sociable.

    Ohh well.
