I've been listening to all Opeth CDs lately.

So here's one complaint; (bombastic mode ON) why do they have to repeat EVERY fucking riff FOUR times? It's so predictable that it becomes ridiculous at times! (bombastic mode OFF)

Other than that, they're awesome! Nice melodies and drumming. I have no problem with the vocals, in fact I really like the vocals, but Opeth is not for cookie-monster haters ;-) They mixed it beautifully with normal vocals, though.

The sound makes me feel like I'm lost in this imaginary forest of magic. Perhaps it's the reverb, perhaps it's that combination of normal-monstrous vocals, but I'm not sure. It surely sounds like its own genre, what, forest metal? :-)

Anyhow, if I really really liked the first Planet X, will I like the second? (silly me, how would anyone know that?) I mean, how do the two compare to each other?

    NP: In Blue-The Corrs

PS: I still don't quite understand why some of you seemed to have something against Caroline Corr's drumming. Oh, OK. Perhaps I'm biased here. Beautiful girls playing drums are such a turn-on to me.

Thanx to everybody for the fills. Yeah, Greg has a great fave songlist there. :)

    > From: "xxx" <hipodilski@phreedom.org> > > Oh, you silly guitarist... :) Here is the complete list (taken > from the August 98 issue of Modern Drummer)

Shut up metal head! At least I could recognize by myself half of those, I don't need crappy magazines telling me those. :) I thought you're studying, ish, ish..

    > 1. "Frankenstein" - Chuck Ruff (Edgar Winter Group)

never heard. That's Johnny Winter's bro right? I LOVE Johnny Winter. Doesn't his bro play similar music, or.. someone mentioned their original Frankenstein is great prog. stuff?

    > 5. "We're An American Band" - Don Brewer (Grand Funk Railroad)

    Very good rockin' tune. :)

    > 6. "Tomorrow Never Dies" - Ringo Starr (Beatles) > 10. "Manic Depression" - Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix) > 11. "Rosanna" - Jeff Porcaro (Toto) > 12. "Come Together" - Ringo Starr (Beatles)

Damn it, how could I miss these. As I thought so, I listen all this stuff and have it in my home, but it was just plain odd tryin' to recognize them just from the drums without knowing where they're coming from.

LOL, I never expected THAT MUCH replies. All are musicians freaks out here eh? ;) The kind of folks we get bashed about, like ... only musicians likes DT. :)

Cool ! Opeth rocks IMO, theyre easily my favorite band right now. (yeah I *didnt* forget DT) Which album are you talking about (the four times riff thing?) The latest album is their best IMO, and the predictability is good IMO again (in this type of music) because i found myself learning the songs (even though theyre long) and singing along with them (yes you can sing along with them , specially the melodic/clean vocal parts)

I have to , again, be an opeth-nazi and urge everyone with an open mind to check out Opeth's *Still Life*. Even if you dont enjoy growled vocals please keep and open mind because music as intricate, exciting, beautiful, energetic and moving as this disc is hard to come by lately..

I'll agree that the recording is rather noisy, but hey, it's Metal Blade. What do you expect? =] j/k. No, really, it's noisy, but I think that a lot of teh effects add to the atmosphere. I was actually ecstatic to hear the reverb on the piano in Disconnected Pt II. Withoug it the song wouldn't have the same atmosphere to it. I don't think that they destroyed the vocals at all. I do, however, wish that the recording was better.

I thought this was a pretty good idea until I saw the video. I do like Maiden, but this video is badddd! It is very unimaginative, same old-same old 80's low budget type crap. The song and the band deserve much better. I hope Wicker Man does not make it on TRL it would be an embarassment to metal fans everywhere.

And yes, this is just IMHO!!!

    Mixed reviews for disconnected???

Well, I've only heard glowing reviews, though I'm sure that some bad ones are floating around out there. If it'll sway you, though, throw me in the corner of one more glowing review. It's more aggressive than APSoG, but I think it sustains the mood that APSoG captured. And Still Remains is going to go down as an all-time prog classic, along with songs like Metropolis, Natural Science, Heart of the Sunrise, etc.

And while I'm on the topic of glowing reviews, if you good folks haven't picked up the new Spock's Beard album "V" by now... well... you should. Possibly their best album, also more aggressive and a bit darker than their last release.

Well here's a bad review: the first and last songs are boring and pointless; So is like a long, repetitive Engine song; Pieces of Me may possibly the worst Fates song ever; Something From Nothing is `nothing` special; and Still Remains has it's moments but fails to deliver. Also, it's way too short. The first and last track are barely even songs, which leaves 5 songs on the whole album. The only good thing is the song One, which is awesome and almost makes the album worth getting. Of course, this just my *opinion.* But it should also be yours. =)

I've seen a lot of mixed reviews myself, although more positive ones than negative. I just can't get into it at all.

And part two closes out the album with an ambient/piano based resolution (or partially positive glimmer of hope) to the rest of the album (especially Still Remains). Not sure if this has been mentioned but the coolest site in the net is Progrock.com where Dream Theater is played constantly. Please check it out: http://www.progrock.com

Looks like I may DJ for them and write some reviews. :)

    Hi, folks:

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at <http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm>. Meanwhile, here are a couple excerpts some of you may enjoy.

Coming in September from Magna Carta <http://www.artist-shop.com/magna> Steve Walsh/Glossolalia Steve Walsh of Kansas has put the kind of work into Glossolalia rarely seen since the elaborate progressive cathedrals of the 70's. But the sound is decidedly modern. Whals educating himself in digital techniques, Protools, mp3's, you name it, working up the whole record on hard disc, e-mailing files back and forth with king of the new progressive, Trent Garnder, and then assembling a crack band of old friends and new ones to breath life into these mature works. Along with Trent on keyboards, Billy Greer (bass) and Mike Slamer (guitar) are back from Steve's vastly under-rated Streets project, and one of rock's scariest new drum technicians, Australian Virgil Donati, last seen rewriting the percussive texts with Derek Sherinian and Planet X, is heard replaing and/or cooking alongside Steve's adeptly applied electronic rhythms. soundbite <http://www.artist-shop.com/magna/gloss.ram>

Available Now from Magna Carta Bozzio Levin Stevens/Situation Dangerous With the success of their debut release, Black Light Syndrome, Magna Carta was not going to let that be the only statement from this trio of Terry Bozzio, Tony Levin and Steve Stevens! It also marked the beginning of a new and more musically challenging era for Magna Carta. Coming soon is Bozzio Levin Stevens second release, Situation Dangerous! soundbite <http://www.artist-shop.com/magna/danger.ram>

Coming Soon from Radiant Records <http://www.artist-shop.com/radiant> Spock's Beard/V Spock's Beard/V (limited edition digipak) The new Spock's Beard album, V, leans more towards a traditional progressive rock feel. Neal was inspired to write more complicated material after the Transatlantic experience and recent listenings to Genesis' Three Sides Live. The album include a 15 and a 25-minute epic as well as shorter straight-forward songs and a sequel to 1997's Gentle Giant-tinged "Thoughts." The Special Edition, available August 29, includes a 32-page booklet and CD-ROM footage of the band in the studio.

Also, you might want to check out our Overstock Sale page <http://www.artist-shop.com/sale.htm>. I managed to get hold of a few copies (five to be precise) of the Japanese DT video, Images and Words Live in Tokyo, at a pretty good price. Normally it's priced close to $40. However, I have these available for $15.

Also, for those who've yet to check out Artist Shop Radio <http://www.artist-shop.com/radio>, I definitely recommend it. We've had a few more artists join the ranks of Artist Shop Radio music directors since I first opened it up to the public. One of those happens to be Kevin Moore (much thanks to his webmaster, Mark Bredius, for making that possible). So I hope you'll all check it out.

    Gary

    Hey 'jammers,

Thought I'd write in to tell you what those 12 songs are on the Gregg Bissonette song "Frankenstein" - j/k

Actually, I wanted to add a little trivia about the Hamlet quote in PMU. Let's make it into a question:

In what rock movie did the quote "Oh that this too, too solid flesh would melt" appear, and what famous rock musician said it?

First one to reply with the correct answer wins seven hundred tickets to the DT show in Turkey!

    Latez,

    Larry

    OK, jammers.

Just got my tickets for the 30th at roseland. I will be going with my ... um ... well, to make it easy, girlfriend. (don't ask). I am looking to meet up with all of you nuts, so I am sending out a post. I cannot fid you, due to my total blindness, (anybody who knows the jam for a few years should know me), so I am going to have to have you all find me. I do not know what I will be wearing, probably my work clothes, since I am coming straight from work, but look for a red and white cane, and somebody about 5 foot 8 with short brown hair, and a 5 foot 8 strawberry blonde permanntly attached to my hip. (she loves me, what can I say?) and be nice, I actually got the once DT-despiser to totally love SFAM, so we can't go off on her too much, now, can we? Anyway, email me if you are going and let's find a place to connect. know some of you old schoolers have to begoing, right d-man? Come on, guys, where are you? Hell, i am not eggig for a ride this time, just some fellow jammrs to chill with. Email me if you care.

    Hello...

Well, my friends and I cannot wait to go this show, as it will be= our first show where we get to see all of DT. I probably can't get straight answers on these questions, but I'll ask them anyway.

First, what time would you recommend arriving to the venue to get= a decent place? I don't know how early people will show, so i just= figured i'd ask this (hopefully without an ensuing controversy).

Secondly, what time do you *think* the show will end? We're commuting by train to see the show, and the last train we can= take out of the city is 11.42 pm. We can arrange for a car ride back= if necessary, i just wanted to get estimates on when the show will= end.

    Thanks jammers, david --- aim: thanostone | icq: 4727603 |= http://www.users.nac.net/wiggin/
