Hey! I had that dream too! No, wait, it was real. Oh

Hi! Everyone, please read this:
.I got this via e-mail:
On Monday Dec. 4th the Progressive Metal Militia is planning on making a unified effort to bring back the Headbanger's Ball to MTV. How many times have you heard people say, "Remember the 80's when MTV used to play metal?" How many times have you heard people lament the loss of their only outlet to see hard, heavy and aggressive videos? How many times have you actually seen anyone DO anything about it? Well, we remember the 80's and we remember a time when MTV didn't only play rap, hip-hop, R+B, dance or top 40 music. The thing is, the people who felt that their music was under-represented on this channel didn't just sit back and complain about it, they took action and they didn't stop until they were satisfied with the results. For a time there were programs like Yo! MTV Raps, 120 minutes AND the Headbangers ball all on roughly within the same time period. There was a wide diversity of musical styles offered on the channel and that's the way it should be. Somewhere along the way we lost the Headbanger's Ball and things have not been the same since. You can blame Grunge, the rise of Hip-Hop or any other lame excuse but the bottom line is that we let the rug get pulled out from beneath us and have done nothing since to make our voice heard. The phenomenal success of the recent Iron Maiden tour and many more like it are proof that there is still a strong market for this music. Now is the time to show MTV and the corporate world that we will not be denied. MTV is a cultural force that helps to shape the trends and direction of popular music. How many times are you going to complain that your favorite metal band didn't tour your town, your state, even your COUNTRY because of lack of tour support. Video airplay equals CD sales and without them your favorite bands will be doomed to obscurity and irrelevance while the flavor of the month makes their millions for their record companies before being quickly discarded for the next "boy band" waiting in the wings. On December 4th we will call and email Viacom, MTV and TRL and demand the return of this show to the air. You can make a difference, it's been done before when rap and R+B broke onto the station and we can do it for ourselves now. It's up to you. You can take action and bring metal back into the spotlight or you can complain all the way on a 5 hour drive to your next KISS, Savatage, W.A.S.P., VENOM, NIN, SLAYER, King Diamond, or In Flames show, wondering why they can't play in "your area". On DECEMBER 4TH!!
These are DIRECT phone lines right to the people that can make this happen. You will talk to their assistants but if enough people do this it will be all that they talk about for the rest of the day/ week/month. "Good Lord, the phones were crazy today. What the hell was that all about!"
Please forward this to as many people as possible, cut and paste into every message board you visit and go to the web-sites of bands you'd like to see on MTV that aren't on now. Let their fans know that this is an opportunity to change popular music as we know it. WE should be in control of what we listen to and not be force fed the same crap that sounds just like last weeks big rawk hit!!

I wouldn't exactly call Shadows Fall death metal, but they put on a hell of a show regardless of what subgenre they fall into. I've seen them twice now and I've been impressed both times. High energy, high musicality, lots of crowd enthusiasm (one of the biggest moshpits I've seen for an opener at the Troc). Of course, if you didn't like the CD, you still may not like 'em live.

The choice is obvious! Three awesome METAL bands for under $20 versus paying anywhere from $30 to more than $50 for half of an act (touring company A or B) that's put out the same album three times already. In Flames/Nevermore/Shadows Fall -- possibly the best metallic touring combo of the year? TSO -- Velveeta on stage, and expensive Velveeta at that. Plus, you might have to sit behind one of those old-people-smelling blue-hair ladies...
On TSO: I love Savatage, don't get me wrong (and own 2 TSO CDs based solely on that), I just wish they'd tell Paul O'Neill "enough already" and get back to what they do better: being a metal band. O'Neill's should not be running the show, he should be a supporting player; the way it used to be.
As far as Zak Stevens quitting Savatage goes, I can't blame him. The rest of the band has been off spending most of their time with what was supposed to be a side project, and, despite his appearance on a track or two of their last album, they've largely left poor Zak out of the picture, both musically and financially (lessened tours and albums means lessened income).
In Savatage terms, I see his departure as a promising opportunity for the band. Zak was good, but personally, I like the albums with Jon Oliva on vocals much more than the latter-day 'Tage. Oliva has (had?) an incredibly expressive voice, and an evil-sounding one at that.
Zak had a great voice himself, but it wasn't really a "metal voice", and it, along with O'Neill's increasing songwriting influence, forced Savatage to undertake a softening of their sound. Want proof? Listen to "Japan Live '94" with Stevens on vocals. Then listen to Oliva sing on "Ghost in the Ruins"/"Final Bell". The band, at least in my opinion, is much more "alive" with Jon at the helm.
Whether or not Oliva can still pull it off today is questionable, though, which means, in the case that he can't, they're going to have to hire a new guy for at least the live situations. I hope, if this is the situation, that they'll use the singerless opportunity to hire somebody with an aggressive sounding voice. I'm not talking growled death vocals here (though that would be brutal to hear!), just somebody who's more, I dunno, metallicized. To hire a Zak Stevens clone would be both an insult to Zak and, I think, a mistake for the band. Balancing out the heavy with the light better than they have done recently, you know. Will it happen? We can only hope.

Greetings, The Dream Theater in Monterey for which DT is supposed to have been named is closing its doors, refusing financial help, and is about to become a parking structure. It is a shame, since the theater has had a reputatin of showing artsie moovies in a funky atmosphere. Having been a resident of Monterey, I'm sad to say I've never actually been inside, though Skadz, Coldfire, and myself took a picture outside it's doors. Just thought someone would like to know. Maybe Portnoy? Be well. Matt B
