Have to comment here ;) I love the ep where the teachers go on strike
and Lisa needs to learn, so she builds a perpetual motion machine at
home and it keeps going faster and faster. Homer says: "Lisa! In this
house we obey the laws of thermodynamics!" Hehe, guess it shows what a
    science nerd I am.

Old school...I still own the very first Ytsejam T-shirt with the glow-n-the-dark "Let light surround you" and remember when James confronted a jammer in a bar cause he was wearing a "Bootleg shirt" and that was a while after I'd been on the jam...once again...DAMN it's been a while (remember when the DT Doom levels were finally finished...woohoo!!!)

At the DT show here last Friday, I was mulling over which DT t-shirt to buy. I decided to go with one that has the closeup of the newspaper (the "murder, young girl killed...." one) on the entire front and simply "Dream Theater-Metropolis 2000", plus the Majesty symbol on the back.

Anyhow...... I wore it for the very first time today. I went out to lunch, and the second time the waitress (the first person I'd seen all day except my Mother) came to our table, she says "I'm sorry, but I just HAVE to ask..... What is the story with that shirt? Do you know somebody who was killed or something". I explained how DT was a band, and their latest CD was a fictional story about a murder, etc. etc. etc.

OK, this was a pointless post, but anyways I thought it was cool as hell, and I'm betting several more people will ask in the future. :)

HELL YEAH. Like a heavier Metallica w/a touch of Iron Maiden thrown in for good measure. And you're right about Barlow being truly killer. And hey, don't forget their SKULL-CRUSHING RIFFS. *smile* All in all, my favorite "heavy metal" band.

Adam, I think the point we (who have been lucky enough to see the shows so far) maybe haven't gotten across is how intense the show actually is. Sure, they play the whole CD. And sure, everybody knows they can do it note for note. But the energy that came from that stage was unbelievable - it's something far beyond that which is on the CD, and I'm not cracking at all on the CD.

I've seen them 3 times before this tour, and this was easily the best they've ever been. And dig the light show!!!

I didn't see any jammers at the show in DC, but, since I don't know any, there was no surprise. I got there at 6:45 thinking that I'd get a good place in line since the doors were to open at 7:30. Unfortunately, the line was already wrapped around the block! I was thinkin' "who are these people?". Nobody knows about Dream Theater, I thought. Anyway, I've been to the 9:30 club a bunch of times and I knew the sound was going to rock. And it did. First up were the Star People....they immediately reminded me of this dot com commercial with Bill Shatner. They are an amusing group of people...mixing drinks on stage and whatnot... Musically, they're nothing special...the truly amazing thing is how all seven of them fit on the stage with their equipment, the Dixie equipment AND the DT equipment... Second, was the Dregs. I've never heard of them before...they were ok...I'm pretty much fine for anything with double bass drums... and the crowd seemed to like them...and the guitarist can truly play some stuff... Then, DT...I've never seem them before...I've never seen a drum kit that "swallowed" a drummer... All of them were larger than life...they played with energy...John P. played with a blue guitar most of the time... he played the camo 6-string for Home (I guess because it was already tuned to drop D or whatever) and played the camo b&w 7 string for TDoE... Anyway, the set list, as everyone can guess, was:

SFAM (front to back) Jordan had a keyboard thingy in the middle of that... Peruvian Skies Hugeass medley(Erotomania,Paradigm,PMU,UaGM,AFiL,OaMoT,TTT)

Highlights: James with his big hair wearing a baseball cap someone threw on stage SFAM front to back After Jordan's keyboard thingy, the televisions said that he was also available for parties and weddings... The crowd (the show sold out)

Lowlights: Being hungry because there was a hugeass line at the Food Food Peruvian Skies (the one song that they played that wasn't SFAM just HAD to be from THAT album (it still collects dust on my shelf)) I'm glad I waited a year to see them. I typically hate medleys... The synth horn solo...there's no fast forward button when you're at a show... Being three feet away from where drum sticks were thrown at the end...pack of hungry dogs these people were...

The highlights overwhelm the lowlights exponentially...so go see the show...and eat beforehand...

Where'd yall go to meet the band afterwards? I didn't know where to go...

    Chris.

    >The lyrics on SFaM are just crap. They're unwieldy, dull...But I'm repeating myself, here.

I dont know how you can say that! I dont think they are dull at all, just because they are a little simple doesn't mean they arent good! I think the story is of a high enough standard for the music. Not that the lyrics should matter too much, which is just imo because i love prog metal. SFaM takes me away and mesmorises me every single time i listen to it. Personally i think that they are a real clever bunch. I tend not to agree with the opinion going around that just because you dont like some of their material, it means you aren't a true fan. Ive been a hardcore fan of DT for around 6 years now and there are a few tracks on Awake and FII that kinda get on my nerves after awhile, but apart from that... I loved I&W and ACoS. My favorite stands between SFaM and I&W.

But to the original argument... I think the lyrics have been well thought about. And i suppose they arent really trying to attract a different crowd of fans, but trying maybe not to make it so encrypted that you cant figure out what the hell it means example 'Nervous Flashlights?' If you get what im saying.

No time to write my own review, so I'll comment on this one:

    > > I didn't see any jammers at the show in DC, but, since I don't know any, there >was no surprise.

There were at least a dozen, probably more, but I only caught up with a few......oh, and BAFU

    >I got there at 6:45 thinking that I'd get a good >place in line since the doors were to open at 7:30. Unfortunately, the line was >already wrapped around the block! I was thinkin' "who are these >people?". Nobody knows about Dream Theater, I thought.

Yes, they do.....or at least about 1200 do.......oh, and there were quite a few people in that line to see the Dregs only......did you notice a SLIGHT improvement in elbow room when they finished? A shame really, for those people missed a phenomenal performance by OFB.

    >Anyway, I've been to the 9:30 club a bunch of times and I knew the sound was >going to rock. >And it did.

AMEN, BROTHER!! The first DT show that I have attended since '92 at the Bayou that did not REQUIRE full blockage ear plugs. The FII shows were a complete joke, soundwise, compared to this.

    > Second, was the Dregs. I've never heard of them before...they were ok...I'm >pretty much fine for anything with double bass drums... and the crowd >seemed to like them...and the guitarist can truly play some stuff...

The preceeding was a SLIGHT understatement. :)

    >Lowlights: Being hungry because there was a hugeass line at the Food Food

I seem to make this mistake every time........plan on eating somewhere near the club......get to club.....see line at door.......forget about food, say "we'll get something inside"......yeah, right

    >I typically hate medleys...

    Me too......

    >Being three feet away from where drum sticks were thrown at the end...pack of >hungry dogs these people were...

Which made me all the more happy about my choice to go to the balcony....right on the rail, almost center stage. Perfect placement.

    >The highlights overwhelm the lowlights exponentially...so go see the show...and eat beforehand...

    DITTO, DITTO, and DITTO.

    > >Where'd yall go to meet the band afterwards? I didn't know where to go...

Dude, you must have run off too soon, because all 5 of them eventually came right out front and met with fans(as they almost always do), and Steve Morse, Rod M. and Mr. Goodman of the Dregs also stopped to chat for a few. Not bad at all considering it was a chilly night, and most(if not all) family members of OFB were in attendance, or at least in town.

One final comment, and I'd love to get some feedback on this one: has anyone else found James' stage presence on this tour to be leaps and bounds above any previous level? It is evident that the band chemistry is at a very high level here, and James pretty much agreed after the show, when I said something to him about how the new material seemed extrememly well suited for him, his comment was "Yeah, and I'm having A LOT of fun with it." IMHO, it shows.

Great work guys, thanks MP(for EVERYTHING), and come again in the Summer please.

Back to sleep, or work, or diaper changing, or whatever it is I do. Kez

Very, very intense for me. I am voiceless due to knowing all the words, and therefore singing along all night.

    > >I've seen them 3 times before this tour, and this was easily the best >they've ever been. And dig the light show!!!

I meant to mention this, as well. The new vari-lights(or whoever makes these models) really made it SEEM like an arena show, even though the video screens were only regular TV's.......hehe A GREAT job on the light show. > >Paul - Who's been posting far too frequently lately.... >

Kez, who hasn't posted in a very long time, and will probably refrain again for awhile.

I think that's only natural, isn't it? While he was singing in his old style, those of us who liked it were completely happy with it. Others didn't, and complained. Now that he has "toned it down," those who liked it better before are going to complain, while those who like the change are happy.

    > It was almost agreed > upon that it was James "old-school" vocals that turned > off many potential fans.

No argument there. However much I like James I&W/Awake-style singing, I certainly acknowledge that it turns people off. I don't UNDERSTAND it, but I acknowledge it.

    > Maybe gaining new fans is reason enough for James to > tone down.

That's possible. And if it gets DT more success, so be it. They deserve it!!!

    > Maybe it will help him save his voice over > time.

Highly doubtful. Ditching his technique will only serve to hurt his voice in the long run.

But, if you mean save his voice by having to do less screaming in concert to hit the high notes he sang in the studio, you're right.

    > Maybe he just can't sing that high all the time > anymore (sorry kids, the voice goes, there's no > denying age).

That is true. And while James is only in his 30's, and a male voice is really just coming into it's prime then, the constant touring and night after night of singing really add years to the voice. I've said it before, and I'll say it again:

"It's not the years; it's the MILEAGE!"

    > Personally, I never had a problem with any of James > vocals. But in comparison, I must admit that I like > his lower tones better. Sounds great when he changes the melody just a little bit. It's cool and different. He's been doing some cool little embellishments.

    > And Ben Laussade....where is that guy?

I had a job one summer where I had to work 16 hours a day, 7 days a week in an office, editing contracts for a HUGE proposal. I was low man on the totem pole, so sometimes I had absolutely nothing to do, but had to stick around in case they found something menial and unimportant for someone like me. Chatting with that kid on #ytsejam was the only thing that kept me sane. What a nut.

Were you there? I didn't see you. I was keeping an eye out, but never saw you there. How are you?

Thanks for the concert review. I always look forward to Madden's concert review the next day. I was wondering what he'd do after such a peaceful uneventful concert. :) I saved a review he did of the DT show at Jaxx on the FII tour that is just a RIOT!

I saw Mike Blevins there, but I don't think he recognized me without my long hair (cut since March of '99, but DT hasn't come around in that long!) I assume that was the lovely Lisa Marie with him.

    Bingo.

    > - Getting the Japanese Awake version with the help of Kaoru Kobayashi

Hey, so did I! That was the same night I actually met the band for the first time, too. Had them autograph my Japanese Awake CD!

    Then it got stolen... :(

    > The best part of that band was the > violin playing chick, not because she was hot, (well, admittedly, she was)

Was she? She had a face like The Joker! She could sure rip it up on the violin, though.

    Bingo again.

    > none. Hmm someone apologizing on the jam... how often does that happen?

Well, it seems that the latest "who's a senior 'Jammer?" thread has caused us all to remember some good times on the jam and thus bring about a sense of camaraderie. Personally, I'm going to enjoy it because I don't know how long it will last.

Just by virtue of that fact that some of us have been around for 6 years and some even longer, you can tell this list is a pretty special place. Hi guys.

    > -- You groaned every time you saw Al post something, because Pat would be > right on him going "Where's my tapes"? :)

Wow, what an ordeal. I know Pat publicly forgave him on the jam, but did Al ever send him the tapes?

(Not trying to be facetious, just can't remember.)

    > -- You remember Wes/Beavis's Anthrax .sig

Yes, but (and I wonder if I'm going to regret this...) what about the infamous "Ivory Gate of Dreams" sig? Let's see that one, it's been a few years.

What about the big ASCII middle finger, for that matter? :)

    > -- You remember the "Did I make it in?" flood of posts approaching jams > #1000, #2112.....etc.

So, on Christmas Day, 1994 (or whenever Awake came out) how many people got up early to post at "6:00 on Christmas morning"?

Sorry for the long post, but things are going nicely on the Jam, I saw DT last night at the 9:30 club in DC, I'm going to see them Friday at the Electric Factory. Alles ist shoen und gut.

Hmmm, I guess I'd be a senior member. I honestly can't remember when I started on the list but it wasn't tooo long after it got started.

I tend to skim it (or archive it without reading it) during the quieter times, but I'm, uh, "actively skimming" it now. :)

    * You laugh when you see [deleted --kbibb]

Damnit, Ken was always deleting the cool stuff. :)

    * You own any clothing with ytsejam@arastar.com on it

I'll "unretire" my red Ytsejam shirt for the Atlanta show. I only wear it now for state dinners and other occasions.

    * You fondly remember Hairball, Babs, or Jeff Chew ("where are you now...")

--and so many other cool people who have gone away, gone ahead....

    * You remember irc.dreamt.org before the op-wars necessitated bots

Now it's so quiet the bots are basically unneeded.

    * The coolest "young person" you've ever "met" was Ben Laussade

You must mean "Head." :) Yea, and there was "RipZero," etc.....

    * You remember Bafu's farewell post to arastar.com

I can remember being one of the first Jammers to meet him in person (Trey "T-Stretch" Allen was the other). He was so clean-cut we were sure he was Bafu's brother. "Yea, sure, kid, now go find Steve." hehe

    * Syrinx and Ibanez playing "The Silent Man" still makes you bust out laughing

I, uh, just busted out laughing. :)

    * You know why the Ytsejam's welcome message forbids religious debate

Yep. Not that it might not make an occasional change of pace around here. Gee, anyone wanna discuss singing ability for another week or two?

    * You attended a YtseCon where band members actually attended (and that's before *my* time)

I don't think it was quite before my time -- right around when I started -- but I remember being pissed I couldn't be there. Happily I was there for YtseCon II and III.

    * You need to take off your shoes and socks to count all the Ytsejam romances (failed and otherwise) that you can think of

Whew, at least I can think of one that worked......so far. :)
