Damn straight I've heard of Tyketto. :) The only album I have is Strength
in Numbers. Hell, and they never even had a radio hit, to my knowledge.
So how does everyone look for unknown gems in the used bins? That's where I
found Tyketto. My tactics are to judge albums by their covers. If the band
has a catchy name or nice album art, I'll check for two other things, sappy
song names and long hair. hehehehe. If those line up, I'll usually pick it
up. :) Tyketto had song names like "Rescue Me," "Write You Name In The
Sky," "Standing Alone," etc. so they had to be good, no? :) Of course I've
picked up some real shit, but that's the nice thing about the local CD
store. If you don't like them they'll let you bring them back. hehehehe.
Other gems of note: 21 Guns, House of Lords, Tall Stories, Hardline,
Triumph, Opus...

I just searched through my old floppy discs and what did I find? My old jam archive!! So I can safely say that #499 was my first jam, back in 1994. I won't consider myself geriatrically enhanced (like Neil or Mark :-) but I guess the fact that this post will appear in my 4834th jam makes me qualify as an old timer... (If you're wondering, of course I did not read all of these jams, but waaaaayyyyyy too many) Here are some personal hightlights that come to my sentimental mind right now:
- Getting to know that Kevin left the band in September 94 (well you wouldn't call that a 'highlight', it was more of a shock...)
- Getting the Japanese Awake version with the help of Kaoru Kobayashi
- Doing my first 'overseas' trade with Jason Hartman, making the start for my ever-growing DT boot collection
- Winning a cd, a video and a poster in C-Man's contest "the top 10 reasons why I listen to DT"
- Meeting a couple of German jammers at the DT show in Saarbruecken in 1995 (of course all wearing the "Let The Light Surround You" shirt), meeting the band backstage (Bernd, Steffen, Ihr erinnert Euch? Sonst noch jemand da? Till, bist Du noch dabei?)
- Letting 10(!) DT-fans from Poland sleep in my one(!)-room-flat after the DT show in Berlin 1998 (maybe the craziest thing I ever did)
- Meeting jammers from all over the world at different DT shows all over Europe, making friends...
- Spending a lot of money for cds of bands I would have never heard of otherwise
That's all I can think of for now. Oh yeah, I own two ytsejam t-shirts. Mike Bahr owes me a cd. Brian Cox owes me two tapes. Back to lurking mode...

I don't know about any of the jammers from the DC/Baltimore area, but if any of you caught the show (a lot of you did, it sold out) you all would have seen the Dreg's and DT's opening band, Star People. God damn they sucked. I couldn't believe that a band (and I use the term loosely) like that would be on the same bill with Dream Theater. The best part of that band was the violin playing chick, not because she was hot, (well, admittedly, she was) but she could really play the violin. I wouldn't have complained so much if the front people (two dudes and this violin playing chick) didn't dress like the rat pack and pretend to be from outer space. The only thing that comes to mind is JOKE. Hope they have someone different next week in Towson at The Recher Theater, or I'm heading out for the first 30 minutes.

Last nite was amazing! My 4th time seeing DT and imho was the best I have seen them yet! Can we just re-name them Energizer Bunnies, as they kept going and going with no drop in the energy levels. These guys are living proof that superhumans do exist! James was strong last night, Mike was amazing as usual and the wicked 3 of John, John and Jordan were awe inspiring as they made keys and strings and fingers become a total blur! If Jordan is available for parties and weddings can we rent him for a Ytsecon? ;) The people I was with last night kept shaking their heads in amazement at the wizardry being displayed on stage last night and wow! Pull Me Under was played with the most energy I have seen yet!

Im by no means a pantera expert, but im guessing his "extreme" lifestyle might have to do with it. Its never healthy for your vocal cords to drink like a fucking camel, smoke and do all kinds of shit(drugs) that these guys seem to do. If he doesnt take care of his own body, seeing how he's OD'ed and all, i doubt he gives a rats ass about his voice..

Actually, I heard from somewhere that Anselmo actually has had opera training like our man, James. I normally don't like growl vocals, but his suit the band perfectly. Pantera is all about raw anger, if you're into that kind of thing (which for the record I am not) you wanna hear Phil Anselmo, not Geoff Tate. This is why I prefer to use the term vocalist, rather than singer.
I agree that you should be able to carry a tune before you decide to be a vocalist in a band. God knows I would never try, even though I like to sing, I just have no talent for it. HOwever, sometimes there can be growth. Take Sting as an example, or even Hansi Kursch from Blind Guardian. Both started out pretty crappy and eventually developed into some of, I think, the best and most unique vocalists out there.

I dunno.. the only thing I ever liked about Fear Factory was when the vocalist would stop growling and actually sing... had a real atmospheric voice.

Well Cypher, as far as your Stratovarius recommendation, I would whole-heartedly pimp "Visions". I have all their albums except their first one (and "Infinite", which JUST came out) and I can say that IMO "Visions" is by far their best album. Some will argue "Episode", which is awesome. Others will argue "Destiny", which is also awesome. They also have a blistering 2-CD live album. But for my buck, you can't go wrong with "Visions". Mind-blowing every time I listen to it. As far as what they sound like... picture Helloween (Kiske-era) but much, much better. Whatever you wanna call it... "neo-classical speed metal," "euro-thrash"... I prefer "symphonic power metal". I too am a huge DT/FW/QR/Savatage fan, so I think you'll dig Strato also.
As far as other bands to check out... definitely check out Shadow Gallery's "Tyranny". It seems to be one of those "either you love it or hate it" albums, although I've heard more "love" reviews than "hate" reviews. To me, they sound like a cross between I&W-era DT, O:M-era QR, Savatage, and Queen. Brilliant concept album with an amazing story line, intensely emotional music with huge choruses and more hooks than a tackle box. :-) This album's in my top 5 of alltime, and I revere "Operation:Mindcrime" if that gives you any idea.
Other YtseJam-recommendation bands I've discovered are: - Angra (similar to Helloween/Stratovarius but with more of a tribal vibe, especially on "Holy Land" - their best album IMO)
- Saviour Machine (Christian goth metal.... some of the most intense music I've EVER heard with an incredible vocalist. I would recommend their self titled album, as well as "Saviour Machine 2". Outstanding.)
- Iced Earth (Thrash/Power Metal from Flordia. Sounds like vintage Metallica a little bit to me. Great songs with a killer vocalist.)
That's about all I can think of now. I have my first Gathering CD on the way (Nighttime Birds) which I ordered based on my love of a couple MP3's I've heard (Thanks Korg!), so I may want to add them to this list when the CD arrives.

My first post in probably at least a year, and just to reminisce. How utterly pointless of me. hehe
I've been around since February 1995 (digest 600something); I joined the list a week or two after getting online, back in the days when you could count the Ytsegals on one hand, maybe two. It was definitely a more companionable place, hit-and-run SloppyJoe69 trolls aside, before the mass influx of newbies when the list was mentioned in the ACoS liner.
Seems odd that in the entire time I've been on the list, I had only met a total of three ytsejammers until the Xmas shows last year...

This is kind of what I was afraid of when I saw the setlists start to come in - and my fears were pretty much confirmed when I heard the tapes of recent shows. SFAM is spectacular, but, as someone in a previous Jam said, everyone knows exactly what's coming. Definitely takes energy out of the show when there's no suspense. At least I can plan my beer/bathroom break accurately. :) And what about the almost total negligence of older material? Yeah, a medley is alright (I guess), but I'd much rather see some more older stuff (in its entirety) mixed into the show. They've done such a good job in the past of mixing parts of ACOS in and out of their sets that I'm kind of disappointed to see SFAM totally dominating the show. The end medley is more-or-less just a canned, Cliff's Notes version of some of the old "greatest hits." I definitely can't say I'd rather see them end after SFAM, but the medley is essentially filler and just prevents the show from letting out after an hour and 15 minutes.
So really the only suspense when they play the new album is whether James will be able to sing it note for note that night - the musicians certainly can play it note for note every night and, unfortunately, do. James has sounded great from what I've heard, so that's definitely good. But from everything I've heard one can just bring the CD to the show and pretty much hear the concert. Even Queensrcyhe (who plays every song note for note live) threw a half dozen songs in before O:M and a couple after during the Empire tour. Dream Theater is much too talented a band to be playing the same show every night - 90% of which is one album.
Regardless, I'll be at the Atlanta show next Wednesday and then flying my sorry ass down to Orlando for that show (and a little R&R). Can't wait for both nights, but I'll make sure to bring SFAM so there's no need to tape the shows . :)
