Wow, I (obviously) didn't know that. I haven't listened to the original
version in so long that I guess I can't even hear it in my head correctly.
Maybe it will work if I take my foot out of my mouth! :-)

    No hard feelings!

    Uggh...

I listen to cd's all day at work.. ever get to a point where you look in
and can't decide on what to listen to because you've heard everything
    repeated.. I need something new...

What artist's does the jam reccommend? I've been toying with checking out
stratovarious but not sure which cd..

a quick glance at the cd book has DT (+ most if not all of the side
projects), fates warning, marillion (fish and hogarth),ryche, satch, rush,
kings x, mystic fishook, labyrinth, buckethead, kingsx, savatage, dregs, etc
    etc etc...

Mike C. hates when people refer to themselves in the third person. Mike C.

Wow! I would have thought you had seen the show by
pointing out that drum part. It may have been the best
moment in the whole show. I didn't even realize that
drum part was there until I saw Mike beating the hell
    out of his drums live.

On this topic of James vocals: Maybe I am just
pointing out the obvious here, but we have been
listening to YEARS of James getting his vocal style
bashed for being too high and/or too much tremolo. Now
he has toned it down a little, we start getting
complaints from the other side. It was almost agreed
upon that it was James "old-school" vocals that turned
off many potential fans. SFaM in my experience (and in
the experience of many others here), was able to
capture new fans, the same people who had been turned
off by earlier DT (those people who said "great music,
    the singer sucks").

Maybe gaining new fans is reason enough for James to
tone down. Maybe it will help him save his voice over
time. Maybe he just can't sing that high all the time
anymore (sorry kids, the voice goes, there's no
    denying age).

Personally, I never had a problem with any of James
vocals. But in comparison, I must admit that I like
his lower tones better. Anyone who has seen the tour
knows that he sings a couple of parts HIGHER live than
on the SFaM recording. I cringed when he did it. It
just didn't sound good to me.

Whatta show [for some reason when I first typed that, the "h" in show
didn't register, and would've conveyed a completely different impression].

I didn't go through the crowd seeking out memebers of the jam, but
bestowed the largesse of my knowledge on the groups of people who happened
to be in my proximity. Cool people all around. And the show...words fail
me. I hope this is not the post that drives lucasvinci@?.? to end it all.
After the show I got signatures and found out that Korg was wrong!! Mike's
currently back on Jagermeister, so no tequila, ok? I was gonna get him a
bottle, but ran late. Previous posts have far more adequately described
the show so I'll say go read the last 10-15 jams to get a good idea.
Finally, some other jammer had wondered what was playing before DT came
on. It's the same set of tunes they had on the European leg in November,
with the remix of Rush, Mr. Bungle, etc. I don't recall the complete set
list, possibly Itchy archived it somewhere since the listing was an
    official note from Mike.

Well, it's a kinda average live album - even for a fan. A pretty
    lacklustre
effort IMHO. But, at least in the digipack version I have, it does
    contain
a neat video file of the band doing 'Elanor' with Anneke bouncing around
on stage - which kinda made up for some of the disapointment I felt when
I listened to it the first couple of times.

Whose credentials say he's great in the first place? Sure, Zep was popular, but if truly great musicians were the factor that makes a band popular, I'd be seeing DT at MCI Center and not the 9:30 club (which is a nice club, btw), and seeing a Spock's Beard video on VH1.

    Amen.

Haha! I've always wished Phil would just kind of shrivel up and Devin Townsend would take his place. Imagine Hevy Devy singing Cemetery Gates!!!!!

Heh, what can I say, I've mellowed in my old age. I usually save the gratuitous insults for when I meet people in person now. ;) As for old school...not really, only about four years now. I mean, it's a while, but I got nothing on the people that were here before Awake and earlier. I hit this place in the middle of the drrrrrrrrrry spell between Awake and FII.

Star People - as someone suggested, go with an open mind. The violinist is a looker! Don't skip them outright - it's interesting entertainment.

Dixie Dregs - not my first choice of music (CDNow bio calls it jazz-rock fusion) but musicianship is outstanding. Steve Morse is a monster on guitar and Jerry Goodman on violin is impeccable. Their back and forth jams are incredible. I don't know the song, but one tune is played at breakneck speed with jams back and forth that makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck - it's that good!

DT - what can I say? Volume increases significantly but as others have mentioned, the mix IMHO is very very good. You MUST go to this show (if it comes near you) just to see their musicianship - all of them and notably IMO, Jordan and especially John are just incredible. The CDs are great but you must see them to fully appreciate them! To say they play "tight" in totally understated! Nuff said.

The thing is - and here's the difference - the lyrics to "Save Tonight" are simple. The lyrics on SFaM are just crap. They're unwieldy, dull...But I'm repeating myself, here. > > ~SJD > If you don't like it...don't listen to it. There.

Save tonight blows. Big chunks. It's not comparable to Dream theater.

I'm sure there are, but the earliest digest I found at Skadz' archive was:

    ftp://ftp.dreamt.org/pub/ytsejam/2000/ytsejam.2098

FWIW, the earliest post in that digest is dated "Date: Wed, 11 Dec 1996." The digest appears to have a little 'dicussion' between Damon and Taycheck :), Ripzero prior to his 'moo' days, a Rick Terry post!, a couple from my old mailstorm address, and the following which I found mildy amusing given recent digests' splooge factor:

Hmmm....... private e-mail. What a concept :) Even the dude posting grokked it in all of its splendor!

Perspective: Ok, so where were all the nitpickers back then posting reply after reply, bitching it should be 'unsubscribe FROM the list', blah blah blah? You know who you are :)

Send a friggin' e-mail or hit the PAGE DOWN/DELETE/FIND_ALL_YOU_NEED key. Either way, get over yourself already...

Yeah, heh, and I remember reading somewhere, that after one of the recent gigs, James was talking to someone about the lyrics and he basically said words to the effect of "You're reading too deeply into it" .... guess that would knock off between eight and eleven of the above ten, eh? <grin>

The following is not to Brian (although Brian would have known that already ;), but just some apparently random spewage:

I'll be the first to admit I still don't know ALL the lyrics to songs from WD&DU, I&W, etc. and you know what? Personally, I just don't give a fuck :) I don't care what the story is about, I don't care whether there's some deep meaning, or if you edit out every fourth letter from every third from the first track of every CD you end up getting a clue as to how the fabric of time works or perhaps the secret to controlling the End-Of-Jam ;)

You like wonderful musical stories, cool? Whatever floats yer jetsam....

    I like sounds :)

My favorite is when there is some sort of field trip to the death chamber and Ralph says: "It smells like hot dogs" I just think this one is delightfully morbid. Also in the same episode, the leprechaun that tells Ralph to start fires.

Excuse me if I step aside from the Homer/food theme, but what about the episode when Bart goes to a religious school. The school's motto was: "We put the fun in fundamentalist dogma."

All this talk about old-time jammers has made me nostalgic. Yes, I was at the Pier Six show (play some more songs, you weather pussies, Galactic Cowboys!) I got on this damn list waaaay back in 1994. 6 years? Wow, that's a lot of wading through bullshit, a lot of would-be know-it-alls, a lot of watching people drink from hairy ox testicles... 6 years ago it seemed this list was full of UMBC clowns (oh wait, Steve Z is still here, and Hartman, too, but Backof is gone...) and life had meaning...now it's nothing but bitching; in fact, I walked uphill both ways to work today, all 42 miles each way...

Last night I saw DT at the 9:30 club in D.C. and it was unremarkable. Sure, DT was good and everything, but I would have preferred the show to end after SFaM because the rest was sort of hashed together. I usually post some sort of (hopefully) humerous show story, but this time there was nothing funny to relate. The club was sold out, but...there weren't even any rutting fat couples in need of condoms burning me with their cigarettes! It wasn't 100 degrees in the club. There weren't any drunks pushing me and sticking their bony-ass elbows in my ribs. There weren't any half-dressed bimbos doing the stairmaster dance routine. Sigh. The yuppification of dt is complete :-) Imagine going to a concert and having to actually listen to the music.

Hey jammers. I seem to remember reading a while ago a comment about an old Santana album featuring John McLaughlin? Anyone know what album this is? Thanks. Oh yeah and out of curiosity, any of you metal oriented jammers succeeded in getting a really metal tone out of a Line 6 Flextone?

    > Oh yeah and out of curiosity, any of you metal > oriented jammers succeeded in getting a really metal tone out of a Line > 6 Flextone?

Oh, hell yes. Use the "Rectified" amp model, drive at 80-85, bass at 80, mids at 20, highs at 85, presence on 60, channel volume on 100, master volume wherever you want it. Use a LITTLE bit of reverb and delay for the rhythm tone, and add a little more of both + a light chorus for the lead sound. I actually have the AX2-212, which is far more customizable, but I nearly bought the Flextone and am very aware of how incredibly versatile they both are. I've used this setting (plus some graphic EQ and cabinet simulators from the AX2) in rehearsal and live situations with fantastic results.

    Hope this helps,

    David
