Anybody else remember the YTSEJAM drinking game? Anybody

I signed up back somewhere during the 500s, and am now
rapidly approaching the end of my 42nd orbit around
the sun.

Yeah I have one of those original t-shirts with the DT font on the
back and the words "Let the Light Surround You" in glow in the dark
letters on the back. Hell, I even have a sweat shirt of the same
design. Did anyone else actually buy a sweat short as well?
Amazingly enough this shirt has held up very very well over the years.

Ok I was only at the third one and no one from the band showed up even
though Jeff Chew kept calling people to try and get them to come. It
was a nice time anyway. Remember Matt Bahr *grin* selling off all of

If you'd like to hear a DT-influenced band (the members met in line at a DT show) with a singer that sounds a lot like James, but with a lot more Balls 'n' Chunk (tm) and Derek-school keyboards, you should check out Chiaroscuro. Were you on the Ytsejam when SFaM came out, because I think you missed the whole point of the album. It was fun when it first came out and everyone was trying to work out what the album was about. In the end it was just a simple mystery, not to obvious but it had a fairly clear conclusion, but some people really got into it and it was fun. Of course that was only really for people who have access to the net and who could follow it all on the jam or on MP's forum, but you must remember that DT have a HUGE internet following.

I think you are right that its not good to just mindless love everything the band does, but the original poster was also right that DT do have a 'loyal' fan base in that the fans believe in what DT do and believe that DT will always put out high quality music, even if it sometimes not to their personal tastes. I think DT fans also expect a lot out of the band. I remember when I was a 14 year old Nirvana fan and the stupid amounts of bootlegs that were available - tapes of Kurt Cobain going shopping, Kurt Cobain swearing and tuning his guitar before a concert... Generally a DT fan will have a more realistic view of what the band is and expect quality music.

Actually its just a load of nonsense. The band have said themselves that James could be singing in martian and they would still have 98% of their fan base. IMHO I think the lyrics are just there to give cool words for James to sing. I mean, I like some of their lyrics and I think Kevin had some material that was meaningful, but in general... I remember someone once posted asking what UAGM was about and someone posted back - 'Its about what most DT songs are about - liquid shadows, silver starlights and stuff'.

Start with Giant. I remember seeing some concert footage/interviews with them way back when and my friend had their cd (can't remember which one but it had "I'm a Believer" or whatever on it). To be honest - I thought they were great musicians and song writers. The interview piece with the drummer (guitarists brother?) had him sighting influences and he went over some hi-hat/snare drum stuff on his kit - he kicked arse. I'm sure they were all session musicians before they formed the band (I seem to remember the bass player having a 5-string) - so, er...two thumbs up from me.
Now - on to lyrics, this is soooo subjective, most people can spot completely pants lyrics (eg. "I don't wanna live without your love, I was born to make you happy"), but when the lyrics have feeling, power and emotion (eg. "always and forever you and me, that's the way our life should be"), it's more down to personal taste.
I have always liked DT lyrics, even Burning My Soul (which always gets a mention in these discussions), works for me, I see the state of the music industry, I was a frustrated musician in a band that didn't make it - I can relate. As for SFAM - I think the lyrics work really well, they effect me emotionally, they have power, they move the story along very well....I'm happy.

Hello everyone, I'm new to this list, but an old (I mean old!) DT fan. I just saw the band in Chicago on the 13th and must say that the band was in fine form! I had saw the band on the TII tour, but this time they surpassed even themselves. Everyone was in fine form, including James, whose voice was powerful and in excellent shape! The band of course played SFAM in it's entirety, then came back on and played some old favorites for another 50 minutes or so. From memory they played "Peruvian Skies", bits of "Erotomania", part of "Pull Me Under", bits of some LTE material, "Fortune In Lies", "Take The Time", they were all over the place!. The video screens were a nice touch, and the scenes between songs really brought SFAM alive. I also had the pleasure of meeting Mike P and Rod Morgenstein from the Dixie Dregs (who also put on a great show!) and they were both great. Inspired by the show, I'm putting together a site for DT, and would like you all to pay a visit. It's nowhere near done, but I do have lyrics a-z, and will be doing a lot of work on it soon. Glad to be here, adn look forward to some good discussions in the future...

Amazingly enough, I just got a confirmation of shipping from CDnow for this item. You had me worried for a bit there, but I think they had extra incentive to send it to me because it was the more expensive of the two items I ordered, so the coupon I had got applied to the LiT video already. If they hadn't been able to get DWoT to me, I'd have only paid $2.77 for the LiT video. ;)

Heh, yes, I was here. I don't buy that it had a clear conclusion...when discussion of it died off, there were at least eight or ten possibilities that had been thrown around.

I think you're right about DT having that 'loyal' fan base and I think those people are lemmings. There's no reason to believe that a band is never going to put out something you don't like; it's very unrealistic. How many bands are there that have no songs that you dislike? Not many, I'll wager. Then these people feel like they have to force themselves to like everything a band comes out with, which is why they'll put it on 30 times in a row and then say "it's growing on me." :P I hate that mentality. It's just cheap religion for people who would rather believe in a Shred God than a god who can send them to hell. :P

Yup. And that's exactly what I was getting at when I contrasted the two lyrical styles and said that that tension between the two, trying to fit one into another, is part of the reason why the SFaM lyrics turned out to be pretty awful.

The weird thing about Risk is this is the first CD whcih MARTY has cowrote almost all the songs with Dave. Its usally the Dave- Dave E. connection, or just Mustaine. I was surprised. The songs on Risk are well composed, just uninspired.

Ever heard of Joey Belladonna? He was Anthrax 1st singer. Although his voice is definately weird, he had no trouble getting up on the scale. To me John Bush suits them a lot better. I wish they could find a permanent lead guitarist, I hope the Snake Sabo thing works out.

Well, Roger aside, all the singers you mention, I think are great singers...I'm not slagging people who don't have tecnique, I'm slagging people who are either shit, or who just don't sing. I actually *prefer* the versions of Shine On with Gilmour singing it better...I think it took the practise of the WYWH tour to get Rog's voice OK for Animals, and the ITF tour to get it up for The Wall.

Hell, no! The lyrics on I&W were ace, apart from UAGM, which to my mind was just a guitar solo and a riff that they tacked on some lyrics to later. The rest of them were great!

In his case, it means that he likes everything...I've heard John Coltrane back to back with Shania Twain. It just means he really likes music - including, funnily enough, Awake and FII - but evidently not SFaM.

Sure, Plant was a great frontman. But let me ask you this: that howling in SIBLY (from TSRTS) MUST make you think "Oh put a sock in it you prick!"? Plant was a good singer. He could have been a lot better. Training NEVER does any harm to a good singer.

What utter rot. The only thing that attracts mainstream listeners is big tits, a bit of hype, and a four-on-the-floor dance beat, maybe with latin flourishes. You're equating simple with good, and it's crap. But I suppose that, given the vein of music you say you're making, this makes sense. "Save Tonight" - well, that's good, isn't it? The thing is - and here's the difference - the lyrics to "Save Tonight" are simple. The lyrics on SFaM are just crap. They're unwieldy, dull...But I'm repeating myself, here.

I've been here since several months before Awake came out.
I signed the ACoS petition.
I was the original owner of #242 of the first Bahr CD, "Subconscious." Sold it. All the versions of the songs on it that I had sounded better than that horribly produced CD anyway.
I have a Ytsejam shirt with the glowing letters that say "let the light surround you." I remember the argument for whether the shirt should say that or "balls and chunk is where it's at."

Hey all. This my first time posting on Ytsejam, I've been lurking for a few weeks though. The discussions of SFaM's lyrics actually kind of remind me of high school English class. I can remember my teacher telling me that the two main types of poetry were lyric and narrative. Lyric expresses emotions and feelings, while narrative tells a story. To me it seems like DT has moved from the lyric category into the narrative category with SFaM. I'd have to agree that SFaM doesn't have their strongest lyric writing, but it's understandable, it's a whole different style of writing. I think that they'll progress and improve, though, just look at the difference in lyrics between the original Majesty demos and WDaDU. I think that's what's happening in SfaM. Edge of Sanity - Crimson Yes, I know that it's been mentioned before, but it truly is a wonderful album. It shows some very atmospheric and diverse death metal. Thanks to everyone who has recommended it.
Pestilence - Testimony of the Ancients Thanks to Bobby Tufino for recommending this. If you like technical death metal a la Cynic and Atheist, this is worth checking out. The album features Tony Choy (Cynic/Atheist) on bass. He's certinly impressive.

Well, what you said was that Megadeth was attempting to sell out and that Metallica had become Alternica. No, you didn't exaclty say that they both "sucked" but that it what I basically got out of the comment. And you're saying that they were both TRYING to become what Giant was trying to be from the start! Which is, a band that tries to write mainstream rock hits and adds little in terms of music viability to their music. And I have been a Metallica fan since And Justice For All. I really don't see how it makes a difference WHEN you begin to like a band. Apparently, you feel somehow PERSONALLY hurt when Metallica changed their music. At any rate, if yiu want to say that Metallica and Megadeth have sold out (or even suck), fine, I have no problem with that. An opinion's an opinion. And if you want to ssay that you like Giant, that's fine too. But to make Metallica/Megadeth comment after stating tha that Giant was a fine band?! C'mon, man, that's just sheer insanity. Granted, I only know the 2 songs "I'm a Believer" and "See You in My Dreams" but both were undeniably attempts at writing hit singles, Which is basically what you say that Metallica and Megadeth are now trying to do. It is hypocrisy, to bame one group (or 2 as the case may be) but then hail another band who tried to do the same thing but only were much more blatant at their atttempt.
