I like the time on the Simpsons when everyone in the family was going to give up something in order to save money (I think for Marge for some reason)
Bart: And I'll take up smoking and quit! Homer: Son, I'm proud of you. Giving up smoking is one of the hardest things in the world to do. Here's a dollar bill. Lisa: You gave him a dollar?!! But he didn't DO anything! Homer: Didn't he Lisa? DIDN'T he?? .........hey, wait a minute! You DIDN'T! Give me that dollar back!

Yep, and I get the bonus points, too. I haven't cut my hair in years......it just keeps falling out and getting gradually shorter because of that. It's still long enough, though. I refuse to grow up. :)
(Last Wednesday I was the longest-haired person at the Great Shave-Off here, where if you got your long hair all shaved off, you'd win passes to an exclusive Smashing Pumpkins gig...and they were begging me to have my hair cut. I would say that Phil Anselmo did probably get a little opera training as a kid. He can do the 'metal wail' thing on Cowboys from Hell, but I doubt he could do it any more. Its lucky that Trent Reznor was around to make Great Southern Trendkill sound as cool as it did. For those of you who are interested Pantera has actually been around since the early 80s. Previously it was a glammy metal band with a singer who could sing 'correctly'. They were pretty horrible.
>Sure, Plant was a great frontman. But let me ask you this: that howling in >SIBLY (from TSRTS) MUST make you think "Oh put a sock in it you prick!"? Plant >was a good singer. He could have been a lot better. Training NEVER does any harm to a good singer.
Why do you keep making assumptions and objective statements. You do know that you aren't the center of truth and the be all and end of all of all arguments. By consensus (sp?) Plant has always been regarded as one of the best singers in rock and many people (including me) think that Sibly is one of his best performances. He's just got a bit of the blues in his voice thats all.
>> and the guitarist can truly play some stuff...
I cant believe people don't know the Dregs. 'The guitarist' is none other than Steve Morse - John Petrucci Mark 1. Actually the whole band has so much in common with DT its kind of funny...

Amen to that... I don't know if other people feel the same way about it, I don't remember seeing something saying that, but to me LiT is also WAY better than 5YiaLT... Don't ask me why, maybe it is the better sound as Andrew pointed out, maybe it's KevMo's live presence (even though I think Derek is one hell of a player, Kev's still my favorite)...
>and I have to say that James's voice has definitely changed in the >eight or so years since this video was released - he's DEFINITELY >gone down in his range... His tone too.
Wasn't it you who said a while ago that a man's voice get deeper as time goes by? I thought that was what made him lose his ability to hit the higher notes cleanly (Metropolis-part I in that Luxembourg concert is the perfect example to me)... Maybe all of that "screaming", so to speak, like he does in TKH (the LaTM) or in TLF in LiT has hurt his throat, couldn't it be? Anyway, he does sound different, and at times in 5YiaLT his voice sounds "tired" to me...

Congrats on the raise, Mark :) What did you have to do to... oh I guess I shouldn't ask. Oh yea- hey guys, this is my first post on the jam. I've been a DT fan since around the time the Jam got going ('96 I believe) but I only looked on as Mark P e-mailed in to this group of progressive freaks. It finally dawned on me that I am a prog freak as well, so here I am.
Whew- glad that's over with. Is there anyone else here that has a problem getting SFaM out of their car cd player? It's been there since October (with a few exceptions for IaW, LTE2, and SB's Kindness), but every time I eject it the player won't give it up :) ...and neither will I. I absolutely cannot wait for next weekend, when DT will be in Orlando and Pompano.
As for you people who wish to dis James' singing and other wonderful things about this album- please step back and look at look at SFaM as a cd from an entirely new group. Why? The level of creativity, technique, and attention to detail is a 180-degree turn from FII. FII had its strong points, yes, but I think the permanent addition of Jordan is the most fantastic decision DT has made in years. Ok, so LaBrae doesn't belt out incredibly high notes and so on, but the artistic level IS incredible.

Um, this is kinda' dodgy ground, because actually Derek was the one who said this; and he's demonstrated in countless interviews since that he hates prog lyrics anyway. So we should be carefull before accepting this as "the band's opinion". I think MP is quite into lyrics, it's just a shame he's not so good at writing them (sorry, Mike). I *KNOW* that JP is into lyrics (we've all got that interview, right?), and he can do it really well when he puts his mind to it. But SFaM's conceptual baggage really did seem to prevent any opportunities for vertical takeoff at any point.

>But SFaM's conceptual baggage really did seem to prevent any >opportunities for vertical takeoff at any point.
Very good point. For me, when I'm writing lyrics or scribbling poetry, it just comes from inspiration of nearly a divine proportion. I once sat down and drafted the basics for a conceptual masterpiece that I once wanted to write and record, but after having done the outline, the inspiration wasn't there. It seems like a wonderful idea from the start, but it would be easier to write a lengthy novel or a screenplay than write a lyrical masterpiece for a concept album. You have a couple of choices in the writing, you can sacrifice details of the story to use more artistic poetry in the lyrics (re: Misplaced Childhood), or vice versa (re: SFaM). IMO, I prefer the former to the latter, but with the latter, you can actually comprehend the story without having to assume too much, which is nice, but imo doesn't lend itself to "stand the test of time."
And in the end, if those of you who are bitching about the lyrics are also of the same group who was always pressing DT to make Met 2, you only have yourselves to blame. :)
And as a final note, I think James' singing on SFaM may not be his best, BUT I'd rather hear him sing conservatively within his natural range than keep straining the hell out of his voice every night on tour. :P The proof is in the pudding. James' singing on this tour is stronger than I've ever heard him before. :) -- KorgX3 thinks people just get too damn nitpicky around here. NP: Genesis - Calling All Stations.mp3

More to the point, they're going to be so sick of SFaM by the time they're finished hauling it around the world that they'll want to avoid it for the whole of the next tour. That's probably 50% of why they're not playing much FII on this tour.
And just for the record, I've been here since the fall of '98...Wow, seems like a while now. I remember the first coming of Eckie and the disappearence of Bafu (where the hell's he got to these days anyway?)!
Anyhow, NEW TOPIC ALERT. I was wondering on what people's opinions are on this: what song would you consider to be the DEFINITIVE - *not* the best - Dream Theater song? My vote goes to "Lines In The Sand". It has the progressive lyrics, the mad vocals, it's long with echoes of Yes (the complex stuff) and Floyd (lyrics over same chord progressions, but with different embellishments to build suspense, and a slow mid-section), and it has a heart-melting solo. What more could you ask for? It embraces just about every facet of DT's ouvre, but I'm sure that someone disagrees. Provided you don't think it's UAGM (it isn't) or ACoS (which I'm not counting for obvious reasons), let us all know what you think.
Speaking of Ytsejam shirts, is there going to be a Jam 2000 one?

Hey, What band is playing that cover of Tom Sawyer before DT comes on stage? I like how they did it. Left it alone enough to respect Rush, but changed it enough to give some new grooves that kind of kick ass.

Old school indeed. I think I'm the oldest (not in years) lurker. I think I've posted more in the last few months than in the last few years! On the Jam since about 6 or 7 months prior to "Awake" being released. Jen Albert told me to subscribe.

I can't believe you people. I have been on this list since fall of 95, I have been in phases where I posted more than anybody ever could, and you would think being he first blind jammer would mean something to somebody. I have not seen my own name mentioned anywhere. I guess that shows how inactive I've been lately. Guess fame is fleeting. Yet, Bafu, a man who hasn't been around in years is still held up in high regard. Maybe I have to make some bootlegs and shaft the whole Jam to be remembered for something.

Nice to know there were so many jammers (MFP or lurkers) at the 9:30 club show. I wish I'd met more of you, though the few I met at Cafe Nema were great. I lost you guys when I stopped to buy merch and then Food Food. I was wearing my Fish shirt under flannel, in case you saw me. James' comment when coming back to meet the fans as they rushed at him was great. At first we swarmed in the street, and he said, "Maybe we should get out of the street or we'll all get fucking killed." Or words to that effect. I got my Xmas Cd insert signed (heh, didn't mean to bring up that can of worms again).
That Simpsons quote (You can't handle the truth) is great. But the best part is immediately after that brave speech. Marge says angrily: I will NOT have you telling them about our personal life. Homer, meekly: Yes, dear.

Of course they wouldn't. They should have a john on the bus. Three maybe? :)

Came through fine. And I didn't see the lady in question. More's the pity I gather.
Damon demanded his fair share of acknowledgement.
Yes, I remember when you were at the top of the MFP list nearly every month. Unfortunately, I have no time to listen to your show. I will check out the archive some time.
If you wanna see me in concert, I'll be playing with LaMonster at the Garage on Mardi Gras. I'm not sure if it's an all ages show or not. I'll also be playing with the Thad Wilson Big Band Monday nights in March at the One Step Down. *End of plug*
