On the music side of things, I've heard the mp3 off of www.satriani.com
and I must say it's a beautiful piece of music, but I dunno if this
means an even more mellow album than Crystal Planet from that alien with

"breathy" part, everything is good, but when it goes up a note or two, my
voice gets all uncontrollable and suddenly higher ? I'm not a singer at
all, so that's probably one reason, but this passage thing sounds like the
technical description. So I'd have a really low passagio in other words,
though I don't know if that's the correct way to term it.

Example: in Scarred, when James is singing "well, we're not laughing,"
that would be his chest voice, and then the "How come you don't understand
me?" would be his head voice ?

Is there any way to ease the jerky transition for an amateur from chest to
head voice, so if during a verse it gradually switched one's voice
wouldn't just either go way up stay low, as it does now ?"

Anybody can correct me if I am wrong on this, but I will attempt to
answer your questions. I don't really have much experience singing, nor do
I have much vocal training. I am taking a beginning voice class here at
college and we talked about passaggio (they didn't even tell us how to spell
it).
I would consider "Space Dye Vest" to be an example of James's chest
voice. I don't know personally where he shifts from chest to head. I
suppose the Scarred example applies also. My answer to the question
regarding the difference in James's voice is "sure, I guess."
Where your voice gets uncontrollable is probably your passaggio.
Whether it is high or low I can't tell you without hearing you sing. I know
mine only because I have tried and found it. The fact that your voice is
uncontrollable might simply mean that you are trying to sing too quietly and
aren't supporting your tone. That is another concept entirely. I have also
found when I try to sing "breathy" it is alot more difficult to control my
voice in general.
There is a way to ease the jerky transition, but sadly I don't know how
yet, we haven't gotten that far. I have heard it takes a while to perfect,
years. I wish I could tell you what it is, I'm pretty sure some other
jammers know what I am talking about--let us know how to do this. If you
play an instrument, try playing scales and singing along, and getting each
pitch to come out. I guess this might work so that your voice doesn't
suddenly jump.
If any jammers have any experience with vocal training (I know at least
Andrew does) let me (us) know whether or not I am right. Plus if you have
any vocal training ideas either send to me, or post them. If you feel this
is not jam appropriate, please mail me privately to let me know (If I wanted
to be flamed I would set myself on fire). IMO I think it is. There are
alot of musicians among us and any help with technique would be welcome in
my book.
Later.

After reading all the reviews of the DT concerts around the country and
around the world, I feel like tonight is Christmas Eve. I say that because
tomorrow Dream Theater will be playing here in Atlanta. For the first time I
will attend, due to work schedules and missed oportunities, I missed seeing
them in the past. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio I have yet to enjoy a
concert in my new hometown of Atlanta so I look forward to this one. Can't
think of a better band to have as my first concert in a new city.
Hope to see some of you at the concert tomorrow.

It's the music that matters.

Ahhh!! That is SUCH a cop out! It's this simple......if you want to get a good place in line, then GET THERE EARLY!!!!!!!!!!!! No one in line (who has been waiting for hours and hours) gives 2 shits if you "made plans AHEAD of time" or not. If you're too lazy to get there early, then go to the BACK of the line, don't cut in front of hundreds of people. I don't usually post, but this just pissed me off so much that I had to say something.

So it's not okay to meet up with friends? I think that's a little rash. I personally don't see anything wrong with someone holding your place in line for you - it's no worse than draping your coat over seats at an event and saying "These seats are taken" when somebody tries to take them. I don't have a problem with that and I don't have a problem with having somebody go ahead of you and get a spot in line, either. It's not like I'm being hypocritical or anything - if you did the same thing, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I didn't hear anybody complaining when we got there, either - and if they did have a serious problem, I might have considered going to the back of the line.

It is not necessary for people to have any love of making music to become part of these groups. I was mainly speaking of the producers with the statement you quoted, anyway. I really don't understand what you're getting at here, unless you're referring to the fact that they put together collections of musicians to make an album. Maybe that's exploitation, but I try to view things in degrees rather than black and white. If you had read my original post that started all of this, I agree with most everything you said, but draw the line with the Backstreet Boys, that one single(group) entity. This is really the only band I'm referring to when I say this.

> >You should be a little more open to watching VH1's Before the Music a little >more and you'd realize how fucking bullshit that comment is. Many of these >"manufactured" bands' members either were struggling in the music biz or >were performing for years before hitting it big in the industry. That is a >completely baseless comment and I have no idea where you even thought to >gurgitate it from.

Again referring back to my post a couple jams ago. I found one day wandering through the Theater Department at my school a flier that read:

"Warner Brothers (Or whoever) Music is looking for the next Backstreet Boys! Must be a male between the ages of 17-21 of this certain height, this certain skin type, and possessing of good looks and sex appeal. Singing Lessons will be provided by Warner Brothers Music."

This is a weak basis, I WILLINGLY ADMIT, I just wanted to rant. Notice the part where it says they will train you to sing.

> >Don't argue with me that the music industry is corrupt. You're preaching to >the choir. But the music industry goes hand in hand with the average >citizen. I'm sure if everyone took music as seriously as we do, the music >scene would be a >little< different, but they don't, so the music industry >can make its own mold.

IMO: the definition of exploitation is taking advantage of people who could care less whether you were taking advantage of them. Maybe I'm too much of an idealist, but I think it's wrong.

> >But even if, say, DT did get the promotion and advertising >we< >feel they deserve, it still would not guarantee their success. You may >think people are absolute sheep who will cow to the media's demands, but >people still aren't going to listen to what they don't like. End of story.

Nowhere, in any of my posts, will you find me saying that everyone should sound, or even be of the same level as DT. You're lumping me in with everyone you were arguing against. I actually agree with you on that. I don't think DT is for everybody. I do think, however, that people only HEAR what is marketed to them, especially if they don't want to take the time to find the stuff. My argument is that we should at least have the decency not to manufacture fake bands, based on looks, and adding musical ability later. At least market them something that started somewhere. It doesn't have to sound like DT,it just has to come from somewhere other than a producer's paycheck, and a focus group study.

I never DID speak of ignorance. There were a few other people who did, but not from any of my posts, that I can remember anyway. Ah well, I give up. Nobody's really listening to what I'm saying anyway.

hi all

here we go again, one of my favourite themes. How many people out there eat franchised hamburgers and pizzas? And how many people out there realize that this stuff is shit? OK. And how many of these people consume this stuff because it's convienient, readily available, they've been raised on it by the industry since kids, and because they can't be bothered to shift their butts into the kitchen and make something much better themselves? My case rests, your Honour. To put it in an oversimplified form: Brittany Spears = McDonald's = industry = big profit Good art = good food = handmade = low profit Well, at least that's how I see it.

And before people question my personal stance, no, I never eat junk food or drink cola.

But man, how can they be SO unaware? There are so many things pointing in that direction (that it is all in a way brainwashing).

I'm sure you all experienced it, you get pissed off and start explaining to your pal your theory of their fave music, and since what you say isn't really pleasant for their personality and intelligence (which is perfectly natural reaction) they look at you and shout: "Hey punk, I have a right to like this and this music, for me THIS is best music around and your crazy guitar gods are nothing but a bunch of sick noise! You have no right at all to title my music as garbage" On that final word you can't say anything else and give up eventually.

I find it a little crazy to believe I'm the only smart ass around (and folks like us). Yeah, it feels good to my ego, but I doubt it is true. Doesn't it sound scary - Few record companies put together a good looking boys band who knows the synchro-dance while poorly singing and the people go nuts for them? It all seems like some science-fiction mind control. I don't buy that really, even if it's true I wonder how can it be true?

Also an important thing to consider is WHY companies choose these genres to promote? WHY exactly those genres? What IS really the problem?

Maybe it's just very simple: Those folks really like that music! And it seems like those folks are huge majority in this world. Natural conclusion from this would be - we are the weird ones.

I'm serious here. :(

>>>I suspect you and I were the only two from the list there; anyone else with plans to go seems to have bailed. ::harrumphing at a couple of specific people:: What weirded me out was that it was an all ages show... I was surrounded by hordes of teenaged boys. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing; I'm just used to DT crowds being comprised of men who can grow *beards*. hehehe >>>

Daniel Chen and I picked up one more on the way to the show from NC, and met three more after the show. There were a handful of us there. Also, we learned from the guy who put together the video segments (met him after the show too) that the local authorities forced Bohager's to shut down the PA after the Dregs set. That's why the dregs were really loud, and DT was bearable. The only problem is that no PA + JP's 6 MesaBoogies = no Jordan or Myung in the mix. James was drowned out at times as well.

There were tons of teenagers there. They didn't bother, but the people who kept shoving me out of the way to go get another beer did. One guy changed positions three times in the show, always going to stand in front of the shortest person in his general area. I can take people drinking at the show, or smoking, but at least pick a spot and stay there.

Hello!

On 28 Feb 00, at 16:07, some English Major wrote:

These words definitely made me all the more determined in my opinion about= military people! I=B4d personally like to know out of which WW2-bunker this guy came creepi= ng out to spread his lousy message using such poor comparations. Very, very poor!

I cant understand why such people are still living in the past. Such comments, even meant as a joke, dont improve the relationship between USA and Germany.

If this was supposed to be a joke, please excuse that I wont laugh about i= t. If not, then please next time think first before writing such bullshit.

Thank you.

That's it? That's all the posts we've had so far? :)

*sigh* I remember when Ytsejam Digest #2000 was just a sparkle on the horizon, an anxiety-creating big deal we were all heralding like the second coming of Christ...

For those of you who don't know, almost every Ytsejam Digest is available in a public archive. Skadz can direct you there.

It's reassuring to note that photographers save their old negatives. It's reassuring to note that composers save their old music. It's reassuring to note that architects save their old blueprints.

You've hit the tip of the iceberg, Paul. I save every word of everything I write, regardless of the forum or purpose.

Probably because you haven't stood up to da man and told him the day of atonement is at hand.

I could say "I am Dr. Mosh" and people would probably believe me. :) > And when I first saw the subject, I was expecting mention of K-9 at the > least.

You should have been expecting bmmmm-DA, da-NnNnN damda EEE-ma. Bah-bmmmm-da, da-NnNnN damda EEE-ma.

On behalf of ytsejammer bakers everywhere, I warn you. We mix Blueberry muffins with our arms. An actual 'mixer' makes the blueberries burst. So you are most likely consuming a decent amount of bakers arm hairs. Makes you think, don't it?

Another essential DT fan thing (many of you might know Fabien, maybe he is on the list too?) is THIS:

http://flabonde.free.fr/DTSFAM.htm

All I will say, is that if you are a musician, you will be impressed. Mike Portnoy was there, and left a note on his site about Fabien's work, which he found amazing. Check 'em out!
