In a recent thread on whether or not the Beatles sucked (whatever) there were
a couple of opinions about the use of drugs that I don't really understand.
Derek's "bong hit" and the possibility of other DT members doing pot was, so
it appeared, condemned. In fact, it was equalled to a lack of intelligence.
Now you have to know that I am from the Netherlands. In the Netherlands we
have a pretty liberal (possibly too liberal) drugs policy, so my opinions are,
um, culturally coloured I guess would be a fit description.
Pot is as heavy a drug as alcohol. You shouldn't drink and drive, you
shouldn't smoke pot and drive. Pot is nothing like LSD or heroine, and the
theory that 'pot leads to heavier stuff in the end' is much disputed (and
indeed refuted). I don't smoke, and I don't smoke pot. But if people (Derek,
other DT members, or any others basically) decide to smoke some pot then
that's fine with me. People drink coffee in the morning to get their arses in
gear, people smoke a cigarette to calm their nerves, people can have a
nightcap to allow them to sleep better, people should be able to smoke some
    pot for whatever reason.
There's this TV programme called "Highway patrol" or something. It's made in
the US but broadcast here, too. When I see police officers arresting someone
because there is "a smell of pot" in the car (or indeed enough actual stuff to
roll a joint), or when I hear that Whitney Houston is arrested for possessing
15 grammes of marihuana, that strikes me as something of a rather mid-thirties
German way of dealing with things. In fact it pisses me off enormously.
There's so much crime going on that needs to be taken care of. A highway
patrolman occupied busting some poor sod's arse over a joint could be
contributing to a much more worthwhile cause.
Please understand that I am not promoting drugs here - the heavy stuff nor
the light stuff. But if people want to smoke pot then let them. Don't judge
them because *you* think it's bad. You don't judge your dad when he drinks a
beer, right? As long as it's in moderation, anyway.
     Just my 2 Euro-cents.

    >

Unless you were cryogenically (sp?) frozen and buried in the ground, or you don't
listen to the radio, you would have heard their cover of Last Kiss last year which
was their biggest hit ever and a surprise because it was originally only intended for
    a fan club CD.
I saw them in support of Yield two years ago and that was my favourite show
ever (up against some greats including Ozzy, Malmsteen, Metallica, Tool and M. Manson).
I agree they have probably never equalled Ten, but Vitalogy is probably one of
the strangest and most interesting grunge albums, and the video clip to Do the Evolution
    was fantastic.

    >after awhile. Astro Creep seems a lot more varied, with better songwriting.

This is a very underated album IMHO. I've never heard anything with so much energy
before. I think Rob Zombie is basically a one trick wonder, but its a cool trick none the less.

Has anyone seen or used Mike Mangini's Rhythm Knowledge lessons/teaching
package, if so some feedback on it would be nice.

Secondly, my guitarist friend has an Ibanez S440 ??? can't remember precisely
and it needs rewiring but we are no convinced that the way it is wired up at the
moment is correct can anyone help with a wiring diagram for this.

    Thanks

Anyone know what Marc is up to these days? Last I heard of him was his last
(as far as I know) solo album "American Matador", while it was good, I didn't
think it was quite as cool as "EE Ticket"... If you like instrumental

Actually, I've heard some of Kip's solo stuff since Winger... pretty good stuff... and I was talking to Rod Morganstein after a "Jazz Is Dead" show and he said that he really digs Kip's stuff (and plays on some of it as well).. I didn't hear anything on the second solo album, only on "thisconversationseemslikeadream". Is the other one even out yet?

It's also on the US version of HL, I think. Almost all the US versions of Angra CD's have bonus tracks, IIRC. Fireworks and HL have the Japanese Tracks. Angels Cry has three remixes, Freedon call has the three tracks from Live at the FNAC on it, and Holy Live doesn't have any bonuses.

Sad, since I have Jap versions of HL, Fireworks, and Angels Cry.

Well, it seems that Mike Bahr was the guy who kept calling up Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci at all hours of the night asking them to get rid of that Kevin Moore character. I think this was all a plot to try and get Kevin to play in Bahr's little known underground Ska band. Well, the daily bugging of the band members finally worked and they tied him up, stuffed him in a trunk of a west coast bound car and the rest is history... I am really shocked by this, because I can't believe the guys in the band would actually believe Bahr's claims that testicular cancer was highly contagious and they needed to get rid of Kevin before they caught it (and lost all their hair too!).

So Kevin got shipped out west, but never did play in Bahr's band (he actually told Bahr that he thought Bahr was an awesome accordian player, and that his talents on keys would be vastly over shadowed if he were to join the band... Bahr became really depressed over this (and the fact that his band lost the opening slot for the Spice Girls' "Spice World & Ska" world tour, so he eventually headed to the hills and has not been seen or heard of since then...

So there you have it... Because Bahr actually caused Kevin to be kicked out of the band, most DT fans are naturally a little miffed at him... or maybe it was the last CD that he released, "When Images, Dream, Day, Words & Ska Unite"...

I'm glad to see you will forgive Dream Theater for their obvious weaknesses in character, judgement and intelligence.

Before I even start, I think you've sucked me in again. This sounds very familiar to the "James smoked pot in Amsterdamm" discussion. Were you the main spokesman for the "Just say no to Drugs" campaign? Maybe not.

There's a difference between user and abusers. The problem is not drugs, it's people who are out of control. You seem to be mixing the two. It's the people who abuse that have a problem, and may become a nuisance. I don't think the guys in Dream Theater are out of control. Many musicians do go out of control, but once again, it's not the drugs, it's the people.

    my $.02, BH

p.s. I am against the use of any drugs, and don't recommend them to anyone. Most drugs used in America are pushed by Drug Companies, not hippies. Put people in jail for marijuana, but prescribe Ritalin for half the children? That really makes sense.

As a matter of fact, I DO have a time mention and HAVE tried doing this as an experiment. It was a nightmare. I came back to the year 2000 and The Spice Girls were being hailed as the greatest song writers EVER. Not only that, but John Petrucci was a taxi cab driver and Mike Portnoy was a waiter!

No, of course you shouldn't. That's not what I meant. I simply meant that IMO it's important that the Beatles ahould be recognized for their importnace to the worls of music. Now, basically it comes down to this: I think they were an important band; you do not. And that's that. End of thread for me (I think! lol). Well you wanted to know what happened to Mike Bahr, here's my take on him.

He started of sellling bootlegs, putting out quality product. Things started to go well for him, so well that he got greedy. Instead of doing it for a hobby, it became a business. He then became more interested in making money than customer service. He started offering more titles, again greed factor, his service bacame very slow, some waited a couple of years for a CDR. The quality of his product deteriated to such a level that he used crappy black and white artwork for liners and even put songs that were not performed by Dream Theater and had the nerve to give them titles and say they were DT songs. The he put out a bootleg that he recorded from a real audio broadcast on the internet. then claimed the recording to be soundboard, when in fact it wasn't. To make matter worse he was still taking peoples money when hae had no hope in keeping up with orders. It was common for his customers to wait months, even years for his precious bootlegs. Which didn't seem to bother him, all he would offer is excuses and he continued to spend the money that was coming in for orders. So basically he ripped off a lot of people. Really his bootlegs aern't worth diddly squat these days, I picked up nearly all his DT boots (originals) for next to nothing.

The last I heard he opened a legitimate games shop, when bankrupt, sold the masters of his DT and other boots. And he is now in Brasil living with Ronald Biggs as a futative, wanted by interpol for his crimes again fellow yammers. Seriously he is the lowest form of person their is, ripping off fellow music lovers of Dream Theater and others and he never showed any real remorse. I hope he is rotting in jail somewhere with a smashed bottle up his ass :)

I am sure this is going to be a most interesting thread, until Skadz halts it :)

I'm glad to say I did an in-person deal with him a couple years ago (in the midst of the mayhem) - I found it humorous that he made me meet him somewhere (we live about 2 miles away from each other, in Mesa, Arizona) - we had to meet at his game store because he didn't want me to know his address, for fear of me passing it on to the people on the jam that wanted his ass... :)

I got my boots right then (and I didn't have to wait 3 seconds) - of course that makes me a huge dick, because I'm sure there are hundreds of you out there who lost their money to the poor sap!

In accordance with the prophecy, OBWedgKnOb@aol.com uttered: > > PLEASE TAKE ME OFF THIS MAILING LIST >

Please follow official instructions below to unsubscribe properly!

    *******************************************************************

First, ask your Internet Provider to mail you an Unsubscribing Kit. Then follow these directions.

The kit will most likely be the standard no-fault type. Depending on requirements, System A and/or System B can be used. When operating System A, depress lever and a plastic dalkron unsubscriber will be dispensed through the slot immediately underneath. When you have fastened the adhesive lip, attach connection marked by the large `X' outlet hose. Twist the silver- coloured ring one inch below the connection point until you feel it lock.

The kit is now ready for use. The Cin-Eliminator is activated by the small switch on the lip. When securing, twist the ring back to its initial condition, so that the two orange lines meet. Disconnect. Place the dalkron unsubscriber in the vacuum receptacle to the rear. Activate by pressing the blue button.

The controls for System B are located on the opposite side. The red release switch places the Cin-Eliminator into position; it can be adjusted manually up or down by pressing the blue manual release button. The opening is self- adjusting. To secure after use, press the green button, which simultaneously activates the evaporator and returns the Cin-Eliminator to its storage position.

You may log off if the green exit light is on over the evaporator If the red light is illuminated, one of the Cin-Eliminator requirements has not been properly implemented. Press the ``List Guy'' call button on the right of the evaporator . He will secure all facilities from his control panel.

To use the Auto-Unsub, first undress and place all your clothes in the clothes rack. Put on the velcro slippers located in the cabinet immediately below. Enter the shower, taking the entire kit with you. On the control panel to your upper right upon entering you will see a ``Shower seal'' button. Press to activate. A green light will then be illuminated immediately below. On the intensity knob, select the desired setting. Now depress the Auto-Unsub activation lever. Bathe normally.

The Auto-Unsub will automatically go off after three minutes unless you activate the ``Manual off'' override switch by flipping it up. When you are ready to leave, press the blue ``Shower seal'' release button. The door will open and you may leave. Please remove the velcro slippers and place them in their container. If you prefer the ultrasonic log-off mode, press the indicated blue button. When the twin panels open, pull forward by rings A & B. The knob to the left, just below the blue light, has three settings, low, medium or high. For normal use, the medium setting is suggested.

After these settings have been made, you can activate the device by switching to the ``ON'' position the clearly marked red switch. If during the unsubscribing operation, you wish to change the settings, place the ``manual off'' override switch in the ``OFF'' position. You may now make the change and repeat the cycle. When the green exit light goes on, you may log off and have lunch. Please close the door behind you.

    >My question: What did he do? Why is he so hated? >I'm sure I'm not the only one who is out of the loop on this one...

Well, considering that I'm one of the oldest list members on here, I guess that makes me qualified to talk about Mike.

I think the begining of the end for Mike was when he lost his ability to make silvers. Before, all he had to do was to get the master made and send it off to be duplicated. After that, he had to create CD-Rs by hand. That and that he became financially dependant on the CDs were his downfall.

The one that killed him was Virtual Songs, a 3 CD boot of Rush's Test For Echo tour. He was over a year behind with some of the orders. Since it was a full time job for him, he still was putting projects after that one and taking money for it. People on the list started getting upset at him, critisizing how much he was charging, how much it cost, etc. Eventually, he had to give the remainder of the work to someone else to finish and was pretty much run off this list.

I think Mike ment well enough, but got way over his head. What started off as a service to the members of this list turned into an enterprise to take care of a demand he found. In the end, he dug himself a hole he couldn't get himself out of. Sad, really. I liked the guy.

Those of you who still villify him, just remember that we on this list created him and we bear some responsibility for what happened. At the time, he served a purpose. It introduced a lot of people to ACoS and Eve and To Live Forever to those who wouldn't have otherwise have heard them. He might be partially responsible for ACoS for being recorded. I'm not saying he didn't make mistakes. He made plenty of them. But I'm also saying he doesn't bear all of the responsibility either.

Sorry, had to get that out...

Not completely. He's on Magna Carta's ELP tribute.

The problem - at least in my opinion - is not that he had to have someone else complete his orders for him, but the fact that 50% of his "customers" still never got what they payed for. He was like a politician making promises he couldn't keep.

I was at a bookstore the other day and saw a metal magazine(forget the title, it wasntmetal edge)that had dt on the top left corner of it...it had a really cool interview with MP and the writer was very supportive of SFAM...the interesting part was that Mike went on about how big of an influence the Beatles were to him, and how he loves to take their ideas (since he feels they were so innovative) and incorporate them into DT...like the ending to Pull me Under taken from I Want You(shes so heavy)...I dunno, thats just what i read a couple days ago, and i know 50 people have written to ask people to stop posting Beatles comments, but still, 49 of them had to throw in their opinion....

Hey, Graham. Would Scenes from a memory, the cd with the fii demos on it, be that CD that he put songs not performed by dT on? I do not recognize the playing part way through. Have no idea what the hell it is. By the way, I am looking for a few things to complete my Mike Bahr collection. Can anybody send me a complete list of the stuff he produced? Are his Rush bootlegs worth any weight in salt? At 03:53 PM 1/25/00 , you wrote:
