    Hey all,

Sorry I've been delinquent in posting to the 'jam lately. You can send me
my lumps of coal later. ;) Seriously, I've been absolutely swamped with
email and snail mail, not to mention my JOB job, so I haven't really had
time to read the 'jam in the past few weeks.

    Damon wrote:

Um, that would be me. :) I thought someone had announced it here back in
October, and I know that it was announced both on www.dreamtheater.net and
www.mikeportnoy.com months ago. But I guess word travels slowly these days.
(Speaking of which, my last name is no longer McWatters, and my bird is
    still alive and well.) ;)

For existing DTIFC members: you'll know your subscription is up if you
receive a notice with this quarter's fanzine. If you don't receive a
renewal notice, you can probably assume that it's not time to renew yet.

Fanzines and Christmas CDs are being shipped as we speak. They're late due
to a delay in processing the CDs. So right now (unless something changes)
it's too late for new people to sign up to receive the CD. Also, please
note that it will take up to 4-5 weeks for the fanzines and CDs to arrive in
the United States/North America from Holland. Some locations, especially
those in Europe, will get them sooner. So if everyone could be really
patient, I would really appreciate it. :)

If you need anything, please read the US information at:
    http://www.mikeportnoy.com/usdtifc.html
FIRST before sending me any questions via email. If you *really* need to
verify your subscription, you can email me, but I ask that you not do that
unless it's an extreme emergency. As it is, it's too late to sign up. So
if you're not already a member, there's not much I can do.

Anyway, I hope this clears things up. If I can ever do anything to help,
please don't hesitate to contact me.

Yeah, i'm sure this creates a sticky situation for a lot of fans. I'm in
the same boat - I'd rather attend a show in Indy or somewhere in Ohio,
but the tour dates published so far cut short just before that! I know
Mike doesn't have anything to do with this - its the promoter's business,
and they can only do so much at a time. But, not wanting to miss this,
I've purchased my tix for Milwaukee and Chicago and am preparing for the
long-ass drive! And, hey, if they do arrange a show in Indy, Cincy, or
Dayton (maybe even Columbus), I'll just get to see several shows in the
week! I hope that the tour is successful, 'cause then there could be a
second US leg after the European dates!

If you check the Links page, you'll see that the FreeBSD Monkey Project
people are the same ones that host OFB's www.dreamtheater.net (as well as
www.shadowgallery.com), so they probably took the www-less name for
protection from URL-poachers, or they're fans as well.

I'm near San Berdu (Loma Linda). I'm going to the saturday night show. I
still need to purchase a ticket however. I'd also like to know if there's
going to be some kind of get together before the one on the 5th.

Also, if anyone wants to hook up at the Anthrax show at the House of blues
in L.A., I'd get into that. I've already got a ticket for that show. I'm
a displaced eastern jammer from Atlanta and don't really know any jammers
    out here either yet.

Let me know if/when anyone wants to hang out before/after the show!

I remember when Led Zepllin's stuff was remastered Jimmy Page was saying
that, ideally, when material is transferred to CD from tape that there is a
process that must occur for it to soud right. Many times companies ignored
this process and just through the stuff out on CD. By using this process,
which is "remastering," the material is as close to the original recording as
possible. Or something like that. It's got nothing to do with the production
or the mixing. I think a lot of the older CDs were from when music was
recorded using analog instead of digitally like is common now. (I think at
least. I'm no expert on this stuff by any means whatsoever). So sometimes if
ya have a CD with music form the 80's or 70's it might sound a lot better
when remastered. SOmetimes though it jsut doesn't make that big a difference.

And I hear what you're saying about And Justice For All. It is the dryest
sounding thing I have ever heard. The songs on there are amazing though IMO.
For some reason (perhaps becasue they lacked confidence in him?) much of
Jason's bassplaying is either very low or just not on there. does anyone out
there no the deal behind the production on that album?

Wow. I never thought I'd see all this support for one
of my favorite artists. I thought I was the only one
around here who liked Santana. One of those great
guitar players that really sings with the guitar. With
all this talk about emotional songs, you gotta give
Carlos credit for putting a lot of emotion into his
playing. (I may be a bit biased in this discussion, as
I learned to play guitar by emulating Santana, as well
as Jimmy Page, Ronnie Montrose and David Gilmour.)

    my $.02, BH

For a real emotional song, put on The Cure's "The Same
Deep Water As You". Put this single song on repeat
mode, and listen for 8 hours straight. If you don't
like The Cure, do the same thing with Space-Dye Vest.

You know what....if he has split with Ibanez and gone to Ernie ball, great.
It just means that if Ibanez wants to get him back there will have to be more
    money and respect.

In fact, this has happened once before with DT too...anyone recall Mike was
originally a Tama endorser. Then Awake came out and we had MP behind Mapex
kits. One tour later, he back to being a Tama endorser. Life is strange
that way ;) Just goes to prove a point that Tama NEVER should have let him
    go the first time around.

Oh, and on the other thread with regard to Metal Grammys, QR was nominated
in 1989 in the Best Metal Performance (vocal or Instrumental) for "I Don't
Believe In Love". AFAIK Operation Mindcrime was never nominated as a full
length. And yes the lost that year to Metallica's "one". The only reason
Metallica took home the Grammy was for the 1988 fiasco with Jethro Tull-Crest
of a Knave. And in case you were wondering about that 1988 Tull Grammy, the
other nominees were AC/DC-Blow Up You Video, Jane's Addiction-Nothing's
Shocking, Metallica-AJFA, and Iggy Pop-Cold Metal.

After months of lurking I'm not sure why I decided to jump into the fire
about a topic I'm not positive about, but here goes. I was thinking that
QR's Grammy nomination was actually for Empire. After all, the general
music population had never heard of QR before Silent Lucidity, which was on
Empire. Of course, O:M is more deserving of an award IMO. Anyone know for

Y'know, I never really dug TAMP on FII. It was an okay song, but nothing

solo is one of the most emotional things I've ever heard. TAMP is now one of
my fave DT ballads, and I NEVER listen to the FII version. Has Jay
Beckenstein collaborated with DT other than what's heard on I&W and OIAL?

Also, I finally snagged me up an mp3 of "Eve" from napster.com (check this
site out!!!). After a few listens, I think I figured out what makes it so
emotional; because the feel changes with every chord change. It starts out
triumphant sounding, like something bad is FINALLY over, but then, when the
chord changes, it turns despondant. It does this over and over, which is
why it's such an emotional ride, imho

Mike may be able to clear this up but I think he may have also made the
move back because Tama came out with the Starclassic maple kits and such.
They made a big jump from the Rockstar kits to the Starclassic ones...
    theyare fantastic kits IMO...

Hmm, this Cd could have been recorded on my home stero and I would STILL
love it to death. Its a freaking amazing piece of work. Everyone says the
production sucks on it, but I disagree. I think it sound awesome. I
actually think of the way it sounds when I think of the album, which makes it
more distinct then any other. The vocal style of James at that time(the only
time we hear him with a gruffer voice), and the LOUD dry drums. Shrug, I
love every minute of the CD and wouldnt waste my money on a "remastered"
    version of it.
On the other hand:> I keep trying to get myself to buy Rush's
"Hemishperes" (which has been spoken of highly and I even have a CDR sampler
of it from a really cool guy in the DT NG) but I keep shurgging it off. The
CD is remastered and all, but I dont know why I can't just get myself to buy

I don't really know if I'm right or not, but I'm pretty positive that Mike
has ALWAYS been a fan of Tama. If I remember correctly from his clinic at
the LI Drum Center, he bought his first kit there - the Tama beaut that
showed up for the softer songs of the FII tour as well as the LTE
sessions. So, with Mike's love for Tama, I doubt that he willingly left
their sponsorship. So to whoever said that he was booted then brought
back is (I think) correct. I'm just curious why he was let go..

And yes, the starclassics do rock. Kind of expensive...but hey, they
    sound great!

    Scott.

On the subject of orchestral music, I would have to say that the most
emotional piece I have heard is Mahler's 9th symphony. At some point in
their lives everyone should sit down in a dark room with candles and
meditate on death with the great Gustav Mahler. It is truly a wonderful
    experience.

John without a doubt belives he's playing an awesome guitar. And I don't
blame him for leaving Ibenez for money reasons (if this thing is for
    real).
His name on guitar is worth alot and if the company can't aprecciate it,
oh well, there are tons of great companies out there who will build
awesome guitars with any specs artist chooses.

    >I wonder if the contractual details are about money, number of guitars,

Wrong. I had an oportunity of buying his acoustic guitar (and my best
    friend
bought one of the electrics) and we had a lenghty discussion about
    guitars
with John. He was quite enthusiastic about his guitars and little
    details
that made them so special. And he frequently emphasised in various
    guitar
mags how cool his guitars are, and how he can really nail the sound he
    wants
    with them.

If this thing is for real, I'll be very curious about what kind of
    guitar
EB & John will make. Because there was a roumor that he's building a new
guitar with Ibanez, I asked him about it and he mummbled something about
it being made out of mohogony. I wonder if he was talking about his new
    EB guitar :)

Actually he've released 5 solo albums. The first two are next to =
    impossible to find.
    - Protocol (1989)
    - Force Majeure, Live (1993)
    - Symbiosis (1995)
    - Another Lifetime (1997, released on Magna Carta)=20
    - Out Of The Blue, Live (1999)
Musically it's rock-jazz-fusion with emphasis on the drumming.
To view my thoughts on the albums you can check my site on=20

Simon have been the drummer of TOTO since 1992 right after the tragic =
death of session legend Jeff Porcaro. Jeff Porcaro is my biggest hero of =
all time, his feel and time was out of this world! He didn't play flashy =
stuff like Mr. Portnoy, Mr. Phillips & Mr. Colaiuta. But with over 2000 =
released recordings featuring his drumming there's no question about how =
big this LA cat was. Jim Keltner called him "The man with the golden =
    groove".=20
Every drummer who have taken lessons have played the "Rosanna" groove =
which is Jeff's. I think Portnoy played a part of it on atleast one of =
    his drum clinics in Europe.

This is nice, finally seeing a growing amount of people liking FII stuff, and
specially TAMP from it. It's one of my favourite song on FII, but also in
general. It moves me so much, especially the live version, although I prefer
JP's solo over the sax in OIALT.
